I've been here before and wanted to try it again, but I highly recommend you avoid this restaurant. The lady in the front was the only person in this establishment who knows what hospitality is. Once we were seated, the waitress came over and asked us what we wanted, even tho we did not even get to look at the menu. She was very rude and spoke so low we couldnt understand what she was saying, when I asked for another drink she responded very rudely and was kind of rushing us to order. My husband ordered shrimp tempura and he said it's all bread crumbs with very little shrimp. They also made a mistake with his order because at first they gave him shrimp teriyaki even if he ordered shrimp tempura so we had to wait a bit more for his meal. Went for hibachi with a big group for a birthday. Service was great, even if a little too deferential -- really courteous, with servers even going out of their ways to re-cook a dish with gluten-free soy sauce in the back kitchen after finding out one of our party had failed to disclose they didn't eat gluten. Another one of our party needed their food cooked with less oil or butter instead of oil, but instead of cooking it in a corner of the hibachi grill, they also had that made up in the back, which was kind of weird. Accommodating, but weird. Based on service, they've earned the extra star, because tbh, the food only warrants two. If you like your food absolutely DROWNING in syrupy teriyaki sauce. If you like thick, sweet sauce and a lot of it, you'll love this place. If you want something with a lighter touch, as I usually do, and go in expecting just a light soy drizzle as usually found at most teppanyakis, you'll find yourself cringing. Even the vegetables are doused with a dumping of teriyaki. And asking for light oil is not really a thing they can accommodate, due to the high heat of the grill, so it's doubly unhealthy. Fried rice was blah, but I liked that you can get noodles instead. But the noodles are plain, on the oily side, and also drenched in teriyaki. Soup was fine, salad's dressing seemed mayo-based. TL; DR - if you love gallons of gloopy teriyaki sauce all over everything, this is your place. If you're trying to go for something a wee bit healthier, you could do better. read more

I've been here a few times usually on the weekend. It is normally busy which is a good sign. Worth the wait for sure. They do have a full bar and tons of sake to choose from. Staff is always friendly. Ive done hibachi with a group of 10 and another time with just one other person. The cook always makes it a fun time. The food is always really good! Definitely get the filet mignon. The other times we've sat at a regular table and had sushi and the rolls are always good as well. Great wine choices and really good martinis. Wasn't such a fan of this Patchogue sushi and hibachi restaurant. Nice interior and courteous service can't compensate for the below average sushi. The rice isn't seasoned and the fish wasn't particularly fresh tasting, especially the tuna. Also, the yellow tail and scallion roll had no scallion. Wtf?! Prices are average though. So this is an update. I've been to Hoshi about 3 more times since my first review of this place. 1. Their sushi has gotten A LOT better. This is the main reason for this update. I want to let you all know that their specialty rolls are fantastic. My favorites are the TNT (not on menu, current special) and Giants roll are my favorite. Very creative and delicious!!!! You have got to try the TNT!!! That being said I would stick to rolls, and not the Nigiris, which are only worthy of 3 stars still. 2. Their menu has not grown. I am still disappointed by this. Where is the Sashimi dinner? 3. Their hibachi tables are awesome. Sake fountain in my mouth!! It's like a Japanese keg stand. How long can you go??? A solid 4 stars. read more

I've been stalking Hoshi since I first saw the banners going up months ago. I finally got the opportunity to try it a few days after their grand opening. The place was packed (Friday night at a new place in Patchogue, so it was expected). I only had to wait about 25 minutes for a table for six, which I felt was not too bad. The interior is really chic with lots of fancy lighting and some pretty trippy designs. Their menu was pretty simple, which was a little disappointing. I'm used to going to places like Sumou, Tai Show, and Sho Win, which all have very extensive specialty roll lists. (They did just open, so I'm sure it will get longer). Their Hibachi menu seemed much more extravagant, but I did not want to dish out the extra money. I'm reviewing them based solely on their sushi. What WAS nice was that they seemed very open to letting us go all over the place in ordering custom rolls. A friend of mine asked for some crazy custom roll he used to get on the West coast, which involved salmon, eel, cream cheese, spicy mayo, some other stuff and then deep frying the whole thing (totally delicious, btw). They also had no problem letting me add some preferences to the rolls I ordered. I know some sushi places are pretty rigid about that so I'll give them a star for that alone. Where they loose another point was that our food took a very long time to get out to us. As a group, we waited nearly 35 minutes for our main course and then my food didn't get to me for another 10 minutes after the rest of my table received theirs. The place did just open so I'll def give them another shot. TL;DR, Hoshi is a very hip-looking joint for sushi, but doesn't have the greatest selection. read more

Mushroom soup was lukewarm; I had to send it back to be reheated Waitress did not offer me a glass of water. I had to ask for it; however, she brought the other patrons water Fried ice cream was doughy I have eaten there before, and some of the waiters seem prejudiced towards me--most likely due to racial stereotyping. I conclude this due to the way they treat me compared to their White customers. I am Black and am usually the only Black I see there I will never eat there again. Great sushi, as well as other very fresh fish and wonderful ambience! My husband and I haven't tried the Hibachi but have come here for dinner alone, and with friends. We never had a bad experience! A welcoming warm, lemon towel to clean your hands is a nice touch. The menu is extensive. The food is pleasantly artistically presented. Everything is delicious, but of course, I enjoy fresh fish. If you are a hamburger kind-of guy, you may not like it, but probably wouldn't come here in the first place! If you enjoy Sushi and Asian dishes, don't pass this place by. Came here for dinner on a Friday evening. Not a bad place, pretty standard. LOCATION: main street patchogue, easy to find from the street. Parking is a bit annoying though, try looking in the lots across the street behind the buildings. DECOR: looks like your average habachi/japanese restaurant. Dark wood flowers and tables, small bar area. FOOD/DRINK: ordered some habachi and also some sushi. Sushi was decently sized for the pricing, was happy about that. Nice taste to it. Habachi was also generous portion sizes and good tasting. I was happy to see they had Lychee martini's on happy hour special. The martini was really good. SERVICE: came around 7pm, waited about a half hour without a reservation, not too bad. We asked for forks when the waitress brought out our appetizers, but she actually didn't bring the forks until dinner. Finally a great sushi and hibachi restaurant. I loved the sushi rolls, ambiance, staff, and service. If you come here on the weekend and want seating in the hibachi area you need reservations. This placed get's crowded super fast. I would come here just for the strawberry Japanese Soda ( Ramune). Ramune changed my life , I cannot go back to American soda haha. You will get a kick out of these sodas. They come in cute packaging, and even just opening it is fun. Lucky for me, my friend guided me on how to open the soda correctly. I live sushi and have traveled to numerous restaurants. The is my all time favorite. There food is always great. For the most part the service is also good. One day this past week the waiter was not very helpful. He must've been new because I had never seen him before. My friend and I decided to brave the snow storm and head in to Hoshi since she had a gift card. I wouldn't come back if I had another gift card. It started out okay and then evolved into a horrible experience where my friend actually called our horribly rude waitress out. Ordered the saketini x2 (don't order if you're looking for a buzz, they're not strong), the Mrs. Lin roll I think was the name of it (it was ok, I have nothing bad to say about that), the Shumai (it was a little fishy smelling) and the chicken + shrimp hibachi that came with fried rice. The fried rice had a lot of pepper in it, I actually love pepper but there were visual specs and a very overbearing taste of pepper in the rice and in the chicken +shrimp (both over cooked but edible). So tell them to dial it back if pepper isn't your favorite (at times my mouth felt like it was on fire). We did feel rushed and our waitress seemed almost annoyed that we ordered another drink... it's snowing out, obv we want another round and you still are serving other people. Anyway, after the drinks were served, she shoved the check at us. I almost laughed in her face I swear. What disgusting behavior, why are you rushing us? I wanted dessert but we tried to taper our ordering bc she brought everything out at once which is a huge pet peeve of mine. Appetizer comes before the meal, we wanted sushi after and then hibachi. She brings everything out with an attitude. Ok, I still want dessert. We ordered, we wanted another one ten minutes later bc it was small and she had the balls to say the kitchen is closed and the chef left, HA. My friend was like why would you not tell us the kitchen is closed, we want to order more and you still have customers so no the kitchen isn't closed and the chef did not leave, you liar. She goes ok let me talk to them in the back. She knew damn well it was open and the chef was still there, all we wanted was fried ice cream. She comes back to the table after swinging the drawer that contains utensils open and slammed it shut then slammed the fried ice cream (that was soggy) down on our table with the spoons. You are a disgusting person and the food honestly wasn't even good for you to have that big attitude AND it was nearly 730. Like stop. I would never even patronize this restaurant even if they were giving away the food for free. I've seen other reviews their reputation isn't that great and their miso soup does suck. It tasted like dirty water. That waitress was really something else. This place is just another basic, nothing special sushi spot in the patchogue area. There are many others that trump this. I'm sure the locals come here since it's on the main strip but it absolutely sucks. And taiko 360 is 100 times better and they want you to enjoy your food, alcohol, and service, unlike this crap hole with the disgraceful, lying waitress. read more

My daughter and I came her for dinner, my daughter ordered some sushi and a spicy tuna roll. She didn't want to finish her food as she said the fish is not fresh and it was tough, like rubber. She said it was hard to describe but it was simply inedible. Btw floors in the dining room are dirty and the bottom of the seats are torn .......shredded and just hanging there. Any way the manager came over when we shared our grievance with her and she said, "it's impossible that the fish is not fresh!" She said it very nastily!!! We said, "we're sorry just cannot eat this." She stopped off in a haste! She came back apologized for her behavior and explained that her back hurt and she shouldn't even be working right now. So this is the lame reason why she was so very rude to us? Well, she reluctantly took the item off our bill, and proceeded to say, this restaurant may not be a good fit. We agreed, as I explained to her that I was here the week before for dinner as was a little sick the next day, with an upset stomach from a meal I ate there the evening before. I thought however, let's just give it one more try. I like the ambiance right? The service was not good either this time. We had to ask for water. a fork and napkins. Proceed with caution. ..... I wouldn't recommend this restaurant, not a quality place for raw fish. We as consumers deserve better than this! Plenty of quality Japanese restaurants out there! As a matter of fact 360 Taiko is right on Ocean Avenue, literally around the block from this place with much, much stronger reviews. Excellent selection of sushi. We ordered the sushi dinner for 3 or more, was for four. The bill was 190, with apps. The waiter neglected to tell us it came with 2 apps so we ended up ordering two .. There was so much food!! The sushi was great, the fish was fresh, and the drinks were amazing. Ordered Orion (oh-ree-ohn) which is a Okinawa native beer, which was nostalgia for me since I was stationed in Oki with the USMC. Food was slow, but let me tell you it was well worth the wait. We've gotten takeout a couple times since being home during social distancing. With a large family of 13 ordering our own meals and sushi orders, it could get tricky! They always have the order right, tastes delicious, and will pack it separate for each person (so helpful). Their customer service is garbage. I have frequented their restaurant many times -- never again. I placed an order for my husband and I as well as my kids for pick up. I specifically asked for a side of chicken fried rice. I called back to clarify the order because the woman on the phone seemed confused or new. The woman charged us for a hibachi chicken dinner. When I arrived to pick up my order I let her know and she told me I could wait 35 minutes for a side of fried rice or take the hibachi dinner. I explained I wasn't able to wait 35 minutes and I would just take the dinner they gave me. She said okay and proceeded to charge me. I said "your not going to adjust the price? This wasn't what I ordered. And quite honestly it was your guys fault." So the manager said "I can't let you leave with that entree for only $10." (a chicken hibachi dinner is $18.95) So I repeated that this was their fault and I did not order that. So she told me I could pay for it or leave it. So at this point I am so annoyed I said fine -- I'll leave it. So she fished through my two large bags of take out to remove the dinner from my bag. Literally takes the entree out of my bag. Then proceeds to tell me how she can't resell it but she can't allow me to have it for only $10, it takes her 10 minutes to adjust my bill and then tells me next time I call I should make sure I talk to one of the people who regularly answer the phone because who I spoke to "doesn't know anything, and shouldn't even be answering the phone" From this entire experience it's clear they are under staffed, over worked and have zero customer service skills. The dressing, the crab meat, it was all amazing. My friend ordered the chicken and steak following some fried rice and so I thought that I'd get the chicken and shrimp. Boyyy that was one HECK a decision I made. That alll white meat chicken was tender all the way through and the shrimp? sheeeesh the shrimp was drowned in the teriyaki sawwwwce and it gave it this tangy taste with a kick. I asked for white rice and since im selfish I tool all the vegetables hahaha gotta eat your greens . But wait theres more, after watching our cook whip up the food for us, we were given some YUM YUM sauce! Very tasty food and excellent service from the moment we came to the restaurant and until we left smiling. Price is very decent and you get good portions. For me personally it was a bit too much but my friends say I eat like a little bird so don't listen to that. For starter we had tofu topped with mushroom, miso soup. Then I had lobster sushi rolls that our waiter George recommended his favourite called God Father. I like it a bit hot so requested jalapeños on top and that where no problem. This use to be one of my favorite restaurants. Unfortunately on February 22 I had dinner with my family. Habachi chicken. Well within hour I was profusely sick. I was vomiting and had diarrhea and severe Stomach pains within one hour of eating there. I went to hospital to discover I had food poisoning and became extremely dehydrated due to vomiting and the diarrhea and I was in the hospital five days on two antibiotics every six hours via IV. This was a horrible experience for me and unfortunately I will not return. read more

Large groups with reservations, beware! They will charge you $20 a head if someone cannot make it. For instance, if you had a reservation for 12 and only end up with 10, they'll charge you $40. Also, don't you dare be late! Or they'll give you a parental scolding! I admit, we were running late so we called to see if we could push the reservation back 10 minutes past 6:00 which they allowed. However, when some of us showed up at 6:12 the hostess rudely let us know that we were 12 minutes late and they only hold reservations for 15 minutes. Even when we had her check that we pushed it back 10 minutes and had until 6:25, she was still rude. Then she sat almost all of us (two were running behind) and while we were looking at the menu, had us get up and go back to the lobby because they messed up the seating arrangements. It was rather embarrassing. I understand that they need to be strict about seating and reservations, but they were flat out rude and condescending. The place wasn't that bust and other accommodations could have been made. Aside from that, the food is rather good and is the only reason why this review is not 1-star. The hibachi show was run-of-the-mill, short, and unimpressive. Coupled with the abysmal front of the house staff, made for a sub par experience. Needless to say, will not be going back. read more

I just love Japanese food, especially Hibachi Style. I have been to many Japanese restaurants and Hoshi is right up there with the best. You can sit around a large cooking table and watch the chef prepare your food. It's only really worth it though if you have a large group of people, otherwise you sit with strangers.
