I want to start off by saying I have been coming here for the last 15 years and have never had an issue with the food or staff. My husband takes me here every time we're in town. The building is clean, the atmosphere is comfortable, and the food is amazing. With that being said, I am mortified!! I'm not sure I'll ever come back! We enjoyed a nice meal and while we waited on drinks and dessert I went to the ladies room to freshen up. i witnessed a young lady use the toilet then proceeded to walk right out without washing her hands. She didn't care that i was right there the whole time, I might as well had been invisible.This young lady then walked right over and started handling cups that were to be served to guest!! Touching the rim where our mouths go!!! I am beyond disgusted and disappointed. Miss Mary, please learn some basic hygiene skills and do better for the sake of this wonderful establishment. Houston's has always been one of my favorite restaurants because the experience is consistently great every single visit. We started with the Woodford Reserve lemon drops and the grilled artichoke hearts, which are always the perfect way to kick off a meal. Since we stopped in for lunch, we also ordered the grouper sandwich -- a favorite that never disappoints -- and I had the Hawaiian ribeye steak, which was absolutely delicious. I'm still sad that the location in my hometown closed because it was one of my go-to spots. Now, anytime I'm in New Orleans, I make sure a visit to Houston's is part of the trip. read more

Just had a wonderful Sunday afternoon at Houston's. It's been a while since we have been here and I truly missed the top notch, welcoming and relaxing atmosphere of this restaurant. On our visit we were lucky to get a table by the window with a view of the street car passing by. The staff was amazing taking our drink orders when seated. They also gave us plenty of time to look over the menu while we sipped on our martinis. My spouses loved the Hawaiian steak, and I devoured into the red fish. Both were excellent. Also, I need to add one of our party was a picky eater and actually ordered a cheeseburger and freaking loved it. Houston's did not disappoint on our visit. Houston's takes great pride in remaining one of those restaurants who remain consistent in both service and food. On this visit, I was able to grab a spot at the bar. The bartenders are always friendly and attentive. I had the Grilled Redfish with Crispy Rock Shrimp which is served with Coleslaw. Everything was amazingly tasty. The redfish was a generous portion, though I wished for a tad bit more spice. In addition, in a world where people shun coleslaw, Houston's has the best. We have been eating at Houston's for decades, and even though we have lived in the DFW area for 20 years, Houston's is still a place we make a point to visit when we are back in New Orleans. Since we live in DFW, we eat at Hillstone regularly (same restaurant family), so we came in with high expectations based on years of great meals and consistency. The bright spot was the service, which was genuinely excellent. Friendly, attentive, and made us feel welcome from start to finish. We started with the house-smoked salmon (Chef's dressing + toasts) and the spinach & artichoke dip with salsa, sour cream, and tortilla chips . The dip was fine, but the salmon was dry, which was disappointing right out of the gate. For entrées, I ordered The Hawaiian ribeye (pineapple-soy-ginger marinade) with a loaded baked potato . I always order medium, and it came out overcooked. My wife had the double-cut pork chop with braised red cabbage + potatoes colcannon and it was also dry. Our daughter had the cheeseburger and it was okay, but nothing memorable. We really wanted this to be a great night because of our long history with Houston's, but the food execution was not there on this visit. We would consider giving it another try because the service team was fantastic, but the kitchen needs more consistency. read more

Houston's has always been one of those dependable go-tos. Being part of the Hillstone group, I've come to expect a certain level of consistency no matter where in the country I am. So when my local spot abruptly closed, I was genuinely looking forward to getting back and ordering my usual. We walked in and headed straight for the bar, but were stopped by the hostess who asked my friend to finish her phone call before entering the bar area. Slightly odd... but fine, rules are rules, I guess. I ordered my standard: ribs with cabbage and broccoli, plus a traditional salad. Unfortunately, this visit didn't live up to the brand's usual reputation. The ribs were much saucier than I prefer and somehow still managed to be a bit dry. I didn't even bother finishing them, and definitely didn't consider taking leftovers home. For a $40 dish, that was disappointing. The vibe also felt off. It was Easter Sunday, and while there were supposedly no reservations available, the restaurant was oddly empty. No music, low energy... just not the Houston's experience I'm used to. Will I be back? Highly likely. But next time, I'm sticking to what I know they consistently get right, the salad. read more

I'm so in love with the Smoked Salmon appetizer! I'm such a creature of habit with ordering the same appetizer or entree but decided to try it. I have been missing out! The cut of salmon is generous and the flavor, paired with the house-made sauce is so delectable! The bartender suggested to try it with the mild Tabasco Sauce and he was not wrong! We avoided the Houston's near our home in during Mardi Gras, thus it was a must to hit this weekend. Once again, the reason you go to Houston's is for perfect food, excellent service and spot on ambience. Kyle B., our server was pleasant beyond measure, attentive, and knowledgeable. June 26 Today, I made the decision that I will no longer support Houston's Restaurant on St. Charles Avenue. My husband, my 4-year-old grandson, and I visited the restaurant expecting what had become a familiar dining experience. Instead, I left feeling disappointed, targeted, and unwelcome. Upon being seated, my grandson was quietly playing with the silver sugar container that was already on the table. He was simply flipping the lid open and closed and was not causing any disturbance or damaging anything. Floor Manager Tom Wellborn approached our table and removed the container. That was not a problem, and I politely thanked him. A short time later, my grandson was kneeling in the corner of the booth. Tom returned and instructed that he needed to sit down. Again, I complied without issue. Wanting to keep my grandson occupied and quiet, I placed his iPad in front of him with the volume set low enough that only he could hear it. Once again, Tom came to our table and informed us that my grandson needed to wear headphones. At that point, my demeanor changed. I remained professional and respectful, but I began to feel as though Tom was unnecessarily focused on our table. It felt as though he was looking for problems rather than addressing actual disruptions. Of all the tables in the restaurant, he repeatedly walked by ours, and each time there seemed to be another concern. When our server, Marcy, who is very familiar with my husband and me, came to the table, I explained my frustration. I shared that this was the second negative experience I had encountered involving Tom and that, on both occasions, my grandson was with me. I told her that I felt he was being singled out and that I had reached the point where I no longer wished to return. Marcy offered to bring over Executive General Manager Kyle Frasure. Unfortunately, our conversation did little to address my concerns. The response I received was largely a recitation of restaurant policy, along with the statement that he also had three children. My response was simple: "Are you telling me that children are not welcome here?" As parents and grandparents know, electronic devices are sometimes used to help keep young children occupied and quiet in public settings. The volume on my grandson's iPad was low and was not disturbing other guests. In fact, the music playing throughout the restaurant was louder than the sound coming from his device, as were many conversations taking place around us. I didn't want to believe the stories I had heard over the years about Houston's on St. Charles Avenue. Like many people, I felt it was important not to judge a business based on rumors or the experiences of others. However, after my own experiences, I can no longer ignore how I felt while dining there. Over the years, I have heard concerns about profiling, discrimination, and poor customer service. While I cannot speak to what others may have experienced, I can speak to my own experience. Based on my interactions with staff and management, I left feeling disappointed, disrespected, and unwelcome. New Orleans has supported Houston's for many years. Many African American professionals, families, business leaders, and community members have contributed to the restaurant's success. Too often, we become comfortable with a place because we enjoy the food and overlook how we are made to feel. For me, that is no longer acceptable. Those who know me know that my husband and I have been loyal customers for years, frequently dining there on weekends. That history makes this decision especially disappointing. However, I believe in supporting businesses where I feel respected, valued, and appreciated, not simply tolerated. This is my personal experience and my personal decision. Everyone has the right to choose where they spend their money, and Houston's on St. Charles Avenue is no longer one of my choices. I share this not out of anger, but out of disappointment. Respect, hospitality, and consistency in customer service should never be optional. Every guest deserves to feel welcome, valued, and treated fairly. Unfortunately, that was not my experience, and for that reason, I will not be returning. read more

I finally tried out Houston's! I've passed here many times but never stopped in until one Sunday night. My boyfriend and I split the tuna sashimi salad and the Hawaiian steak. Both were great! I wish the steak came with another side like broccoli and it was a little small but it was still tasty. I liked the ambience inside and the service was good. I do not write reviews lightly, especially for establishments I have supported for years. However, after experiencing the same treatment twice by the same manager, this needs to be documented publicly. My sister and I dined at Houston's New Orleans with a reservation this evening and spent OVER $300. We remained actively ordering food and drinks throughout our visit. I also want to highlight that there is no stated dining time limit disclosed at booking. The only thing that is highlighted is that they are cashless and their dress code. Despite this, the manager, Tom Wellborn, approached our table multiple times to tell us we needed to leave because he "needed the table" for other reservations. The restaurant closes at 9pm. His repeated interruptions felt HARASSING and HUMILIATING. What made this experience especially troubling was the clear inconsistency in treatment. A nearby table (Table 41) of four white guests who arrived around the same time was never approached or asked to leave. More than one staff member confirmed this. He also argued with my sister that the information that was VOLUNTARILY shared was not true. This is not an isolated incident. I experienced the same behavior from this same manager on January 31, 2026. In both cases, my party was the only Black party in the section and was singled out while others were allowed to remain. I am very well versed and understand the difference between operational needs and discriminatory patterns, and this reflects a failure in leadership, judgment, and training. Houston's must take a hard look at who is placed in guest-facing leadership roles. This experience was deeply disappointing and should concern anyone who values consistent, respectful hospitality. read more

My husband and I have loved going to this Houston's location for years. We even considered it one of "our spots." In an effort to make Mother's Day weekend special for me as a new mom, my husband secured a lunch reservation here for us and our two friends who also have an infant. We made the reservation for four, due to the fact that neither of our infants even eat food and can only sit on our lap. Houston's on st. Charles cancelled our reservation on Mother's Day weekend stating with the children it's "too many people to serve." My child is four months old and is bottle fed. Having been to many Hillstone Group restaurants in California, we were excited to try our first outside of our home state. I'm glad to say Houston's exceeded expectations on both the cuisine and decor fronts. The interior seemed intended to resemble the adjacent streetcar and was a perfect venue for an elegant, but not stuffy midday meal. It'd be easy to spend hours enjoying the ambiance. The food was even a step above the counterpart dishes at other Hillstones. My kale salad (minus chicken, augmented by extra cheese) was bolstered by the Parmesan being shredded instead of grated so that the flavor to bite ratio skyrocketed. It could use a slightly higher portion of peanut dressing but was still a dish I'd have just about every day. Plus, they gave a discount for the removal of chicken which is an unusual nicety extended by few restaurants. My dining partner's sashimi was better dressed than the versions she'd had elsewhere and the side salad was a real green salad rather than an amalgam of veggies. The only downside was the service was very robotic and curt. Our server seemed to be delivering his lines by rote and even his friendliness felt scripted. Plus, he offered us the dessert menu before we were halfway done with our entrees and even offered us boxes, suggesting that we had eaten enough when we were still eating. Who likes to have the insulation that they have eaten too much or too little? His service was a net negative but still didn't take away from the overall excellent meal. I'd just recommend they allow diners to enjoy their meal of their own volition and find a way to make their presence less stilted. read more

I odered the hawaian ribeye today, It was the worst experience I've had with a steak in New Orleans. Full of sinew and connective tissue. I almost asked for a sharper knife. It was probabley 1/2 inch thick and cooked to medium rare and actually was nicely flavored but was a struggle to eat. It was nothing like the photos of other ribeye steaks on this platform. Stopped in for a quick bite at the bar at Houston's and was seriously impressed. I ordered the cheeseburger with fries and asked for honey mustard and ketchup on the side--simple, but it was unbelievably good. The burger was juicy and perfectly cooked, topped with melted cheddar and crisp shredded lettuce on a fresh, buttery bun. Fries were golden and addictive. The honey mustard was spot on and honestly brought the whole thing to another level. The service at the bar was excellent--friendly, efficient, and attentive without being overbearing. And the decor? Elevated and absolutely gorgeous. Everything from the lighting to the finishes gives the space a refined, upscale vibe without feeling stuffy. One of the best burger experiences I've had in a while. The part that also diminished the experience was the way my request for another drink was declined without any communication. It's been years since I've been to this restaurant. A friend invited me because see loves the crab cakes and it didn't disappoint. We went on Saturday afternoon. We sat at the bar and the bartender was really nice. I ordered spinach dip for my appetizer and Jumbo Lump Crab Cakes for my entree and it came with coleslaw. The spinach dip was good but the Crab Cakes and Coleslaw was delicious. The Jumbo Lump Crab Cakes was crispy and made with Lump Atlantic Blue Crab with very little filler. Houston's has always been my favorite restaurant. Went there Saturday and order what I always order the rack of ribs. Usually served in whole slab. This time cut and stacked. After finishing the ribs I looked in the bowl where I was putting the bones and only had 5 bones. I asked the waiter if they had reduced the serving size and he said no it a whole slab of ribs. I had taken picture of ribs last time I ate there and I showed it to waiter. He counted the number of rib bones in picture and it was 11. He said real Smart I can bring you some more ribs out. So he brought out another half slab that was severely over cooked and I could not eat them. So basically I paid 38 dollars for half slab of ribs. I called back today and talked to Manager. He remembered me and where I sat in restaurant,however, he never came by table to make sure everything was okay. He was not apologetic at all. I told him if I came back to Restaurant I would request my slab not be cut and served whole. He said he would not be able to accommodate that request and I told him I would never be back to restaurant. So be careful the only reason they are cutting the ribs up is so they can serve you less ribs. read more
