This was our 3rd year coming to Kanab and this little place never disappoints. Yes, the restaurant businesses have declined some since COVID and so we do give them a little grace. I had the chicken tenders and those were more like Cisco tenders. In the past I've always had the Rib-eye and ordered that the second time in. It hasn't changed. The taste of this steak is the best. A very simple place living on its reputation from years gone by. Let's start with the service - friendly but bad. She put the wrong dressing on the salad and forgot the rolls. The specialty of the house was the chicken fried steak. Mine was over cooked and the gravy had the consistency of paste. Then came the check issue. They had "lost" our check in their system. It took over 20 minutes to resolve. And then they had the nerve to tell me to be patient after waiting so long. Evidently they had put our order on another table who paid for our dinner as well without knowing. So they got paid twice and were still rude. read more

Well then pardner you have picked the right place. I personally recommend the chicken fried chicken, but most of the food is good. The ambiance and good food is not the reason to head over to Houston's. It's the pie. Specifically the banana cream pie. I'm not a pie guy. I really don't like it that much. Don't get me wrong. I'll eat a slice of pie if offered but it's never something I ask for or crave. At least that was the case before I had a slice of Houston's banana cream pie. It is by far, hands down, the best pie ever made. Also did I mention the size? It is huge. I know Kanab is out of the way but if you're in town or just passing through make sure you stop and get a piece of banana cream pie. Don't have the time to sit down and eat it? That's okay. When that happens it is very sad. Service was good. Wait was tolerable (about 10 minutes) for lunch on July 4. Wife had the roast beef which she really enjoyed. I had the "famous" country fried steak. I've had lots better. Came here for lunch in a party of 5. Didn't seem busy when we got there, lots of booths open, but had to wait a good 10 minutes before we were seated. The seater took our drinks and the server came right after to take our orders. They have a variety of different foods for different appetites. Food came out quickly. Today I would like to talk about one such incident when I received horrible service at a restaurant We been traveling all night with my kids and my husband from Yellowstone . When we arrived to the restaurant we Ask for a table for 4 , plus I I spoke to the lady if she has kid's menu, she said yes!. This lady was very unprofessional, she told me that she can not seat me just because my group was not at the restaurant. I ask her for the second time for the table, her second answer was with a bad look and tone of her voice telling me that I have to wait. But it seems that she is not in the costumer shoes, first of all my family were parking in charge point , our car is a Tesla. If this restaurant is in the main street then the people working at this location should know that part of the costumers who go to this location are tourist. You not supposed to treat guess like that! Maybe was my hispanic face that scare her but I feel bad for my kids because they need it to rest. I do not recommend this place, not family friendly. If I could give this place cero stars that will be better they don't deserve one star. read more

Delicious! Kids friendly- and the food was great! We went on a Wednesday night and it was packed - and I can see why. We had bbq chicken; the country fried chicken and kids meals - all delicious. Family owned business and the food is excellent, they also have a food catering service that helps feed fire fighters at remote sites. I had the southwest chicken with dinner salad and Mac and cheese and all of it what great and the service is wonderful, nice and quick. I've had better experiences at cheap, roadside, hole-in-the-wall diners. Maybe I ordered the wrong thing (sirloin strips) but my meal was the worst I've had dining out in ages. More like gristle tips chopped to child bite size pieces with oily, undercooked pepper strips and onions. I shudder to think what quality of oil they were sautéed in. If the meat was actual strips one likely could not chew it! Had I not been ravenous and anxious to leave town for a long drive home I would've sent it back. Not once did my server check back to ask about the meal. Thirteen bucks for what I should've went elsewhere for a fast food burger. read more

Great recommendation from the nearby Best Western's front desk ladies. It was a short walk away and along the way there were tons of Pokémon to be caught. Also, the city was nice enough to put up multiple plaques along Center Street telling of the City's history and interesting facts. We were seated almost as soon as we entered. Like a good diner, our server was on us with menus before we even parked our behinds in the booth and our drinks were in front of us while we made our food selections. CHICKEN FRIED STEAK is so good. Haven't had chicken fried steak this good in a while. CHICKEN STRIPS were not dry. CHEESEBURGER was juicy As a reward for a whole morning of hiking and a whole afternoon of baking in the sun, MILE HIGH CHOCOLATE MOUSSE PIE. Thank goodness we listened to recommendations from the locals. It wasn't expensive, the portions were large and you will walk out satisfied. There is a very nice gift shop attached to the restaurant. Wasn't crazy about the breakfast or the service. I ate probably one of the worst tasting veggie omelets ever, and our server didn't pay much attention to our basic needs. Our server brought us a coffee refill without the creamer and never asked me why I didn't eat my veggie omelet. It had the strangest ingredients and wasn't tasty at all. Probably the worst of here is that the restaurant is not enforcing any Covid safety precautions. Masks are optional apparently and no social distancing happening whatsoever. We've been coming to Houston's for dinner for the past 20+ years for family reunions. It's pretty much the only restaurant in town that can seat large groups (we typically come with 30-50 people including lots of children). Service is great for large groups. Even though they don't take reservations, it helps to call ahead in the morning to let them know you'll be coming with a large group so they can prepare the banquet room. Doesn't take long to take orders and food typically comes out within 20 minutes. Nothing on the menu is particularly exceptional, but it's also not bad. The flavors are all a little lacking but you won't leave hungry. Definitely worth getting a slice of their homemade pie. The chocolate, banana cream, pecan and apple are all our favorites. read more

On our way back from Moqui caves we stopped to walk around town. One of the shops recommended this place and I am glad we stopped in. First off, the decor is so darn cute and country! The kids all ordered burgers that they devoured, soup and salad for me and my sis in law. If you can and they have it, get the Taco Soup, it was so darn good. Home made hot rolls come straight to the table, and leave room for pie! A giant piece comes to your table that can easily be shared with 4 people! My fav was the coconut cream followed by the banana cream! Delicious and the staff was super sweet and attentive and kind! Stop in for some delicious food! Such an incredible disappointment! People were friendly enough, just couldn't provide service or correct order. Our toast came first, warm but not toasted. We actually ordered a grilled English muffin and it was warm, not grilled. Sent back. Eggs came next, still no drinks or grilled English Muffin. Then, no waitress. She just didn't come back! Flagged the host down, asked for drinks and muffin. He brought it out, not quickly. We were done with our eggs and potatoes before he arrived with the Wrong ice tea!!! Muffin still soft, maybe grilled? Couldn't tell. Finally when we were completely done, and just had gotten our drinks, our waitress reappeared...No apologies...can I get you anything else's? Saturday Aug 14th. 6:00pm After arriving in Kanab in the early afternoon, we researched places we may want to try for dinner. We settled on Houstons trails End in the downtown area. We called to place ed a takeout order for early evening. The girl on thg had phone was having trouble hearing g us ffg or our order. This could be the fault of ours due to the cell phone. I went in about 20 minutes after ordering to put the food. The order was about 51.00. I handed the young girl 60.00 and she asked if I wanted my change of about 9.00. I think this is a tactic used to ensure a larger tip. Most people will feel guilty about saying yes. I told her yes please, I would like my change. I intended on tiping some , but not 9.00. I don't see the need to tip 19% for a takeout order. If I had eaten in yes I might have if the service was good. I did tip 5.00. The girls behind the counter weren't wearing masks, but I am not sure what the mask policy in Utah is, but it has a sigh on the door to wear masks. We had the famous chicken fried steak. It was ok. It was a good value for 14.00. I had rustler burger. (Beacon cheese burger). Not the worst I have had ,not the best. Patty was dry, probably because I did take out. My wife ordered a BLT. She got a Turkey BLT. Cheese on it wasn't real, it was processed. Fries were soggy. Overall the food was edible but not great. I suspect it may have been better if eaten in the dining room. I will not eat there again because of the whole change/tip thing. I still believe the amount of the tip is earned, not automatic. 5.00 was more than adequate for a takeout order. Super friendly and attentive crew. The food was good and priced fairly. Everything came out quickly even though they were busy and we had everything we could want from our dining experience. I looked through the reviews for any mention about what I thought was pretty disturbing. The branding. Super weird to have a cowboy theme and then put an expensive bronze statue depicting a defeated Native American on his horse right at the helm. It's 2021. Haven't our ideas about what "defeat" meant changed? When we went outside my daughter noticed the same image is in neon on the sign. My brain saw a cowboy riding a bucking bronc (because that would make sense) until I looked closer. You guys have a great thing going. I don't think you need to "get with the times." I think however art like this is best for galleries not in a place where people come to rest and celebrate. It's just really off putting in that context. Time for a statue of a cowboy riding a bucking bronc! Honor what is/was great about the Wild West. Seeing the sadness that is/was brought to the original inhabitants is anything but appetizing. read more
