The jai here is really good. Really, very surprisingly good. For me, that is the only thing that tastes good here. I've tried a bunch of items off their menu including the minute chicken cake noodle that I heard was good and everything I've ordered has been bland. But if I have a jai craving, this is the place I go to! There are tables here but it is prohibitively hot in the tiny restaurant so everyone takes their food to go. read more

I work at Kuakini hospital, so I order lunch from here pretty often. This is your typical "hole-in-the-wall" take-out Chinese restaurant. Don't be fooled by their looks, the food is good. And you will always get your food quickly. I enjoy the chicken cake noodle. It's very tasty and reliable when it comes to a quick lunch. They also give you a LOT of food for a $7-8 plate. My co-workers like to get their lunch or dinner plate, which has different combinations of food such as chow mein, crispy wonton and sweet and sour spareribs, just to name a few. They also do party size/ala carte platters, which really comes in handy for last minute potlucks and whatnot. I've ordered the gau gee platter before, which was about $19 for a small platter of 30 gau gee, that's a pretty good deal if you ask me. I've tasted better gau gee elsewhere, but this was pretty yummy for the price. I like ordering food from here because it is decent and reliable. It's not some five star restaurant with elegant food, but at least you'll know that you can get something hot and filling. Oh and just a side note, it's cash only. read more

Another gem of an eating option for someone that has more lint in their pocket than cash. I came here to get a cheap meal and ended up getting more than what I bargained for. I ended up spending more only because I ordered on top of my bbq pork over rice, an extra dish of walnut prawns (a favorite dish that I used to judge most Chinese restaurants in quality and affordability). I was happy with it, but the price for the prawns is kinda average in my opinion at $9.75 (I would've preferred 50¢ to 75¢ less). But judging the bbq pork, that's a great meal priced right, over rice with some Chinese broccoli. I plan to return and try the other dishes to have a better opinion on what else is good. read more

Im was not a fan of Chinese food but this place may have just turned me. Last week for lunch I picked up their roast duck and fried rice plate and it surpassed my expectations. The portion was very large, price was affordable and the best part was that it was absolutely delishious. I will be back here to try their cake noodle minute chicken along. my parents have been coming here for years- we only get take out but i live for their minute chicken and cake noodles! SO GOOD. and the servings are huge- perfect for sharing. it's a mom & pop hole in the wall- with genuinely comfy cozy foods. our go tos are the dinner plate for dad, the salt fish or scallop soup for mom and i never stray from the chicken. i agree with the people who suggested having 2 people go, one to leave the car running and the other to hop out and grab the food (cash only)- parking can be a mess. read more

Clearly the food must not be consistent here since I have eaten here but am never as satisfied as some other yelpers who have rated this hole in the wall. The noodle dishes have always been bland and tasteless. I have never been served a piping hot dish from this place. Even the saimin seems just heated. The pork in the won ton was very old tasting. Like rancidity had set in. The best thing about this place is the value because it is cheap to eat here but what's the point if you just don't like what you are eating? I've been here about 5 times and have eaten gon lo mein and gau chee takeout at parties bought from this place. Psh. Very, very greasy. If I do go back once again, it will be to try the dishes recommended by yelpers who seem insanely possessed by the salt pepper shrimp and salt pepper pork chop. Maybe I haven't ordered a big enough variety from this place but for heaven's sake, if the saimin at a Chinese eating joint isn't good, then it leaves little hope for taste. I judge the broth of a restaurant first and foremost. I don't know what the big deal was about the beef broccoli. Mine was bland and again, not steaming hot to the table. Honey Walnut shrimp-pretty good, not as sweet as I normally like it but good enough. Oyster sauce chicken with Cake Noodle-chicken was very good, skin was crunchy, the oyster sauce wasn't overwhelming but just right. Cake noodles cooked perfectly, equally crunchy & soggy. Kau Yuk ("the red one")-meat was a little tough, suuuuper fatty. I've had better. Probably want to call in your order & do take out as the dining area is not very big & parking is a hassle (only street parking outside). Also, they only take cash payments so be sure to have some on you if you plan to eat here. i paid with my credit card, tho' the waitress tried many times to get it to work. crispy gau chee was very meaty / big! i thought only Hung Won (now shut down) in Kaimuki (Waialae near 9th) made 'em that big! my 3 dishes came out very fast -- how's that possible? there's no need for a/c as a brisk wind blew in from the street (front door stays open). too often the a/c in some places ya go is just too cold! that makes food get to room temperature too soon to enjoy. their serving of water is chilled, but no ice -- likely they skip that expense. it must be Hoy does a lot of take-out business. if not, their menu is so extensive, it'd be nearly impossible to keep that much of a variety of food fresh. Panda Express is quite contrary with its very limited menu which goes a long way to achieve food freshness. one day i'll figure out why folks conversing normally in Chinese sounds like tongue-FU! i heard the kitchen gals & waitress really going at it! it could be that it's 'cuz spoken Chinese has those four tonalities: voice rising, etc., etc. remember Frank deLima who joked that Filipinos talking sounds like boiling water? also inscrutable is how come non-spoken brusqueness (chop! chop! hurry! hurry!) seems "normal." if you're lucky, you've encountered wait help that make you feel like you're a guest at their home. Just be sure to add up your own bill because I was overcharged about $10 today, but didn't notice it till I got home. I'm not sure what happened tonight, but if your considering using DoorDash w/ them; might want to reconsider. Seemed like there were 2 employees in the front and maybe only 1 cook in the back. Even though they have tablets that show the orders from the delivery companies, they weren't making the orders until the driver arrived. I arrived at 6:30 pm. Totally overwhelmed and understaffed. I give the customers ahead of me credit for being patient because many were still waiting for their order after I left. I left at 7:10pm with no food. I found a gem! This little hole in the wall has really good food and very inexpensive. Their menu has a lot of the same items as other authentic Chinese restaurants. Cake noodles were very tasty and good sized portion and the lemon chicken was also pretty good. If I hadn't taken it out and eaten it fresh right there, I guarantee they would be as good or even better than some of my favorite Chinese restaurants. Small restaurant with only 3 or 4 tables inside and the parking is limited to street parking. Nice area to walk, though, so parking up the road may not be so bad. I like this place! read more

Ordered the dinner plate via door dash. The delivery was on time. The food was terrible and inedible!!! I cannot state enough how terrible the food was. The two small pieces of chicken parts was dry, tough and super over the top salty and the pork was so vinegary we all gagged when we took our first bite of it. I've been going to Hoy Tin for over 20 years. Within the last few months, I am convinced something has changed there. We ordered crispy gau gee, oyster sauce chicken with cake noodle, sweet sour fish and beef tomato. Most of the meal was bad, bad, bad. The gau gee was fine, but the cake noodle was soft and bland. Oyster sauce chicken had no sauce. This was the second time this has happened in recent months. By far the most disturbing part was the sweet sour fish. They have changed the fish they use. Very strong river fishy flavor. I spit it back out. Has anyone else noticed a recent drop in quality? No idea if they changed cooks or owner but something has definitely changed for the worse. Does anyone have the 411 on what's happened? It's so disappointing to see a neighborhood institution go downhill. read more

Another sunny day in town and decided to visit one of my favorite restaurants. I Ordered beef with broccoli and charsui fried rice. Omg they were so good. The broccoli was cooked to perfection, beef was so tender and juicy ! And as always the fried rices is just so flavorful , unlike other restaurants I have been to, a lot of them are just plain and no flavor. Also the price here are still more reasonable than other takeout . I will definitely return next time when I'm in town! read more
