Ordered 2 dishes today via DoorDash. Repeated my "go to comfort food" of #55 Sea Bass filet with sweet& sour sauce which was delicious and tasty. This time, my order of #75 Jai Vegetarian Mixed Vegetables was a disappointment. It was downsized to a smaller container, and missing ingredients like snap peas and those yellow "ginko"(sp) nuts. In addition, the prices had all gone up a couple of bucks per entree. Hoy Tin used be a takeout place to get good Chinese food at great prices. Sad to say, it's no longer true. First of all, you need to know what to expect. If you're looking for fine dining or exquisite Chinese, this is not your place. However, what you do get is wholesome, satisfying Chinese food. After seeing photos of the food from Yelper friend Fran, I had to check out Hoy Tin myself. So yes, we eat Chinese food a lot... so much that at times, my Hubby goes on a Chinese food eating strike! Lol! Anyway, Eggplant is one of my favorite dishes in the whole world... doesn't matter how it's prepared, I will eat it! Hoy Tin makes an awesome eggplant dish. On the menu it is listed as being spicy, but if you ask for it mild, it's still awesome. It is perfectly cooked, not too mushy, but just right. There is also an even balance between the sweet and savory. We also enjoyed their sweet sour, pickled mustard cabbage with pork, also known as Sin Choy. If you order this a lot, you notice that some Chinese restaurants can skimp on it by adding extra fillers like onions or green bell peppers (cheaper veggies). Not here! It's done very nicely... not to sweet and not too sour, but just right! Boneless minute chicken cake noodle was also good too. Can't go wrong with any noodle dish here it seems. We also ordered a bag of crispy Gaugee. I can't comment on this one, other than it must've been good because my 2 boys ate the entire bag on the way home. Oh well! The most attractive thing about Hoy Tin is their reasonable pricing. Sure it's a whole on the wall, but don't let it deter you. Went for lunch today at this Chinese Resturant located on Liliha next door to Janes Fountain. My Co-worker decided to treat us for lunch so sounds good for a free meal. I ordered the Dinner plate and it was terrible the spare ribs was hard and the crispy chicken was dry and the Chow Mein had no taste . Quarantined at home, I'm grateful to doordash and other food delivery services to bring restaurant food to my doorstep without endangering the health and well-being of others, myself, and my family. Hoy Tin Chop Suey was one such restaurant as we were having Chinese food withdrawals. I ordered the Shredded Chicken and Corn Soup ($9.99), Tofu with Mixed Vegetables ($10.99), Seafood Fried Rice with Garlic ($11.99) and Minute Chicken Fried Noodle ($11.99). None of the dishes were overpowered with salt. The soup was satisfying with a good mixture of corn and chicken. The tofu with mixed vegetables was quite small for the price so I'm not sure if I would order that dish again. It also contained only one broccoli floret and mostly choy sum stalks. I ordered the seafood fried rice with extra garlic which was prepared accordingly. But by "seafood" I expected more than just shrimp. However it was pretty decent. Finally the minute chicken was boneless and served with won bok over fried noodle and a separate container of gravy. That was nice to better ensure I'm not delivered a messy gravy spill. The minute chicken could also be ordered with car noodle for an extra $1.00. Door Dash communicated to me that the restaurant forgot one of the dishes in my order. I'm not sure if that was on Door Dash or the restaurant but I'm glad it was caught before the order arrived. Overall I was pleased with this restaurant and will order from them again. read more

Place an order for 3 items. One being their crispy skin chicken which should have been $6.99 with an entree order. Didn't think about it and paid when I got there. Then did the math in my head and it didn't add up. Ask the man that took my payment that I think he overcharged me since the chicken should have been $6.99. He gave a lame excuse that the special is not everyday. I just look at him and the menu on the table to see if I was mistaken and he can point to where it says that. He then looked flustered, went to the cash register and took 2 dollar out and gave it to me. I just looked at him like really? Decided whateva and took the 2 dollar since arguing over a dollar is not worth it. To me, it's shady to offer a special and not honor it. It's better for a business to not advertise something than to rip people off like that. Just makes people wonder what else they doing that maybe just as shady. First time here. Just cruising by looking for something to snack on. I ordered BBQ pork on bun. The picture of it looked delicious on the menu; hot, steamy bun w/ juicy pork and hoison sauce, stuffed with scallions..mm yum. Then I got to my car, opened the package and BLEH. You'll see in the picture some dry ass bread with just the tiniest dab of sauce and absolutely no scallions/green onions to be seen. I went back across the street to ask for some green onions. Man, did that lady have a fuss. She was talking crap about me to the cook (presumably her husband) and then throws me a small bag of green onions only good for one bun onto the table top. Legit threw it. Ha, I won't be back. Ever. They really need to appreciate customers. Especially in crazy times like these. read more

Had a craving for char siu with ginger chicken on rice. The char siu was nice and tender but too thinly sliced. The ginger chicken was soft and nicely chilled with a flavorful ginger sauce, all over a bed of choy sum. Of course with rice. Very good! Just like Chinatown! read more

Hmm things have changed a bit now that new owners have taken over. The last time I was here, the previous owners still were in operation. But with the recent takeover, comes a fresh coat of paint and a some minor touch ups to make it a bit more aesthetically pleasing than it used to be. Oh, and the name now is Hoy Tin Kitchen. It's really small inside with maybe 3 tables? They get a fair amount of foot traffic coming through for phone order pick ups from the neighboring Kuakini Medical Center and from the other folks who pull up alongside to make a quick run inside. Parking sucks. The food was alright, and I liked that it wasn't really salty like some other places, but I wasn't that crazy about it either. But it satisfied my hunger after getting off work late and I'll probably be back another time to try something different. Parking here is all street. It makes no pretenses about what it is, which I find refreshing. Come in, eat, get out. Didn't care for the fact that the doors were open and only a few feet from busy Liliha St. traffic. The noise and fumes were a distraction so you are prone to eat and move along anyway. Not exactly a place you want to linger over a cup of tea. Parking is limited to street parking, which is catch as catch can. There was a banner out front that said "Grand Opening June" and when I asked the waitress how long they had been in business, she said, "two months", which was odd seeing as it was early January" but It didn't seem worth pushing for clarification. SERVICE: The waitress was friendly and attentive - water always topped off. Food came out in a reasonable time. FOOD: We ordered ma po tofu which was a bit sweet and was good, if you like it that way. The jai was tasty. And the crispy gau gee mein was flavorful. The portions were minimally adequate but the prices were reasonable. ASSESSMENT: This Isn't exactly the kind of place you'd purposely search out but rather if you happen to be in the neighborhood you might stop in for a quick hot meal. Flavors and dishes are authentic canton style. It is a small business but they always have our orders correct. Their prices have increased a bit but that's understandable. This review is for HOY TIN KITCHEN, which is the old Hoy Tin under new ownership. Sorry to say I ordered just one dish tonight, the beef black bean chow funn with gravy. That's my go-to dish for local Cantonese cuisine. It's probably not authentic Cantonese, but it fills my need for comfort food. I ordered by phone and was pleased to encounter a very polite and helpful person. The order was ready in about 10-15 minutes and was piping hot. For $8.50 plus tax I felt there was a lot of food in the take out dish. The noodles were soft, the beef was tender but not overly tender like other restaurants. Kinda makes you wonder how they tenderize their meat... Like most Cantonese restaurants, there was a fair amount of green and red bell peppers and, of course, LOTS of onion...LOTS of onion. Yeah, it's cheap and it's a filler, but what happened to balanced cooking? The gravy was adequate and not overly salty. All in all, I'd say it was a good deal. Can't wait to try some of their other dishes. By the way, they also own Canton Seafood Restaurant on Keeaumoku street. read more

Btw, she's been eating Jai her whole life so she's had her share of good and not so good Jai. SIN CHOY W/ PORK is excellent! I was in the area today and of course I was hungry (I'm always hungry). Picked up Sin Choy (sweet sour mustard cabbage) with Pork, a half order of Crispy Gau Gee (4 pieces), and a side of Rice. Total cost: $16.74. The sin choy is crunchy and packed with vinegar. Just the way I like it! The Crispy Gau Gee is plump and ingredients taste fresh. Will definitely order both items again. So far, so good! Good tasting Cantonese food, this place does a tremendous amount of take out business. While we were eating, the phone was constantly ringing and orders being placed. We walked up and looked at the pictures of food in the window. We had a chance to see most of the best sellers beforehand. The prices were good too. We were trying to decide on what to select because it was only two of us and we didn't plan on having leftovers. We would normally order a main entree and a lunch or dinner plate so we would have a variety of food. Today we ordered Jai because it's a seasonal dish and supposed to bring you luck for Chinese New Year. We also ordered the Seafood over fried noodles. Both were very flavorful and both dishes were finished completely by us. This is truly a hole in the wall, maybe three tables to dine at. Forget about parking, metered parking with a few stalls. Ordered the roast duck noodle soup and fish with vegetables. I haven't been homesick for NY Chinatown until this moment. Food was lukewarm. Noodles were overcooked and broth had no flavor. Love, love, loooove their oyster sauce chicken on cake noodle. This place is the only place that I will eat cake noodle from. The only downside that I dislike is that, finding parking here is always such a hassle. There's no near by places to park. The price is right and the food is good. Great for take out. This has now become a neighborhood staple when I'm craving Chinese and crispy gau gee...which I'm always on the hunt for. It's a fairly new establishment that doesn't catch your eye at first glance but with limited eating options near Liliha/ nuuanu, this place is a legit stop. Food: crispy gau gee: (nice and crispy and they give more than 4...I don't remember if 6 or 8) and those were super good and nicely sized. I would go here just to order these. Cold ginger chicken: decent size and lots of cold ginger sauce (finely minced just how I like it). Also always on the hunt for a good ginger chicken and this place delivered. Minute chicken w cake noodle: nothing fancy or off the norm. Very good. The restaurant is small, non fussy and food for a casual dinner out. Owners seem nice but the restaurant does close pretty early. All in all, everything is very affordable and they have lunch specials which I wanna try as well. Happy to have another restaurant in the Nuuanu area and will be frequenting often. You should give this place a try. read more

My wife says she used to get take-out here (A LOT) years and years ago but stopped after it changed owners several years ago. The flavors, she said, just weren't the same. We figured, however, enough time has passed to stop comparing it to the original and we decided to get some cold ginger chicken and crispy gau gee mein for part of our Mother's Day lunch. Service was fast (ready in 10 minutes after calling in the order). Parking is minimal. Just street parking right outside. If you're lucky, there might be a stall behind the L&L Drive Inn nearby. Cold, ginger chicken was good. Ginger sauce wasn't too oily. But the gau gee mein was just OK. A bit skimpy on the toppings - veggies and some slivers of meat. It was missing taste..literally not joking cardboard had more taste....we also had gaugee which was ok.
