Used to go to Hudson house at least once a month back in the day so I felt like I had to stop by and get the Mac and cheese. Which frankly was really a let down. It used to be flavorful and cheesy at the same time. Also the pretzel bites were half cooked and half cold. The cocktails used to be another reason to be a regular but this time they were poorly mixed and awkward tasting. The staff is always friendly and great. And the place is clean and chill. I had a great experience at Hudson House. We came here after 6 man to get away from the madness of Manhattan Beach. Mind you, this is not a review of their food. We've only had their dessert, which I'll touch base on later. First off, service is awful. Even for South Bay standards. The bartender is faster at pouring himself a drink before attending to you, and the waitress seems overwhelmed with the 4 tables she has. Or perhaps she's preoccupied with making herself a drink, I don't know. Now, the desserts are similar to those you get in the frozen section of the super market. I'll let you decide whether or not it's worth $10. But I've had some real good frozen pies for $6 from Ralph's! read more

Was so excited to finally try HH, that so many rant & rave about. Came in today, around 4pm, they weren't too busy. A lot of tables/booths were "reserved" and five "tables" including two couples at the bar which were occupied. Most of them already eating or paying and waiting to leave. Sat around for 15 minutes as more people walked in, not a single waitress came to take our order. I finally had to flag one down to which her answer was "oh, let me get your waitress." About 5 more minutes passed and still no one came. While this very same waitress took a drink order of a couple who had just sat down in front of us. At that point, I had enough-it was time to go! I'm sorry but I truly enjoy a place that has great FOOD & SERVICE, it could be a "hole in the wall" place without that great of scenery. It's ALL about the FOOD & SERVICE. HH-thanks but no thanks! This place gets really crowded on taco Tuesdays or happy hour and you have to wait forever (like sometimes even an hour) to get a seat somewhere for 2 people. I've only had their small bites and they're good, I have to come back to try their actual meals. The parking is street parking, usually not too bad. That Pretzel Burger was delicious, and the service staff was attentive. It was a packed Friday night, and craft cocktails always take an extra minute or two to make but we still were able to get our drinks within 10mins ...with that in consideration, me and my other half had a really good expereince. We used to throw our 18 month old in the bike carrier and cruise over to this place. We went early enough that the bar wasn't packed. We love to sit at the bar and we were able to mount our son's high chair onto the bar and have some happy hour. The bartenders are great. Super friendly. They love our son and had a great time with him. One of the bartender's even went and bought more black and blueberries for my son because he was eating all of them. We now have moved to Palos Verdes, so we no longer ride over there, but we still love the place. We've gotten to know everyone and they recognize us... it's nice to show up and have people remember you. The food is great and the prices are great. We love the ambiance.. it's a very hipster hole in the wall kind of place you would find in Silverlake/Echo Park. Totally different from what the rest of Southbay has to offer. read more

Was very excited to try Top Chef contestant Brooke's restaurant. Sadly, I was disappointed. I met two co-workers there for a Friday night dinner, 2/15/13 and first thing I notice is that the place was so loud, I literally heard only 60% of what one of my friends was saying. Not kidding, I had to cup my hand to my ear to try and hear what she was saying. The $2 happy hour bucket of sweet potato fries was great, but that's about it for the food. At one point, the waitress almost served us a dirty glass, thankfully she noticed before she put it down. I was excited to try the signature dish - the pretzel burger. But I found it to be dry and salty, and I generally like things salty, so this was over the top salty. As Tom Colicchio would've said, "Did you taste this first?" It was served with ketchup on the side but I would've expected a 'signature' burger to have a signature condiment. The pretzel bun was also very dry, with only that ketchup to rescue it. I added some garlic mayo that came with the fries to help with the burger. Apparently we also overstayed our welcome - near the end of our meal, a waitress slapped a "Reserved" sign onto our table, and we were still sitting there! Definitely a sign of "don't let the door hit you..." Don't have any plans on returning. read more

The first time I came here I was definitely impressed by the food and the drinks. Second time was a little less impressive (couldn't get drinks or get seated for about 30 mins). The last time I tried going there was absolutely no room for us to stand or sit, and while we stood in the entryway waiting for SOMEONE to acknowledge that we were waiting, we finally got frustrated and walked to another restaurant. No one ever even said "Hi, it might be a wait" or anything. Horrible, horrible customer service. They need to set up a host/hostess if they want anyone to come back. Good energy, friendly servers. But the food....NO WAY. Overpriced and not even good. The pretzel burger was too salty and dry. My pulled pork sandwich, like the burger, was salty and dry, but the meat tasted old. Like way old. Like dogfood old. I took one bite and was shocked at how bad it was. We also ordered the brussel sprouts, but it was more like cheese with a few brussel sprouts sprinkled on top. We picked at our food, but now that we're home, we realized we probably should have sent it back to the kitchen, or left without eating. I would definitely not recommend this place, which is so disappointing because, like I said, it has a good vibe and the servers are really friendly. Oh, and the don't have BBQ sauce. Great food but the service stinks. The hostess who worked on 5/10/13 should be fired. She was rude, unfriendly, impatient, unkind, and unapologetic about seating 6 people ahead of our party of 2 even though we had arrived and put our name in before all of the other guests she seated before us. The restaurant was not very full at the time either so there was no excuse for her obnoxious behavior. When we were finally seated, we had to ask for a waiter to take our order, ask to have our water refilled, and the food took about 30 minutes to come out (again, the place was not that busy and we're talking burgers!). We would have overlooked this had it not been for the initial nastiness of the hostess, she really set a negative tone and ruined the whole experience for us. Too bad, we won't be back. read more

We were in town and wanted to go to the Hudson House because one of the owners came in second on Top Chef, so we took a cab over there. We had the kale salad, mac and cheese and steak. I asked for my steak to be medium rare. It came out well done, so it was very tough and chewy. The mac and cheese was just average, the shells not cooked through, and the kale salad was average at best, not a lot of flavor, certainly not worth $13. We waited incredibly long for the food and the dessert. The service sucked. For dessert, he had two average chocolate chip cookies and I had the butterscotch pudding, which was the best thing we had. Needless to say, this was not what we expected from a Top Chef contestant. How did she even get on the show? I guess because she is cute, because the food was awful, except for the pudding. I guess they want you to mostly drink, since it is a bar, and then when you get drunk, order some food so you won't care what it tastes like. Our total bill was $66 for way, way, way below-average food. What a ripoff. We wished we had gone to the Chart House, where the food and service is outstanding. read more

A noisy atmosphere solidly secured in a hipster dive. Do not go here for the atmosphere on a Friday night unless you want to be screaming over the insanely loud music. I don't mind loud music when I'm at a club or at a bar. Don't get me wrong. I'm hip to the youths, if you will. But when my ears bleed into my truffle fries and I experience an intense bout of tinnitus directly after leaving the establishment, I begin to fear for my boyfriend's safety for having chosen this restaurant after a hard, stressful week. Food was excellent and service was great... would rather go on a week day hoping the music and loud crowd would be at a less earth shattering decibel level. Also, I wouldn't mind if the annoying drunk table of early 20 somethings weren't there next time. Once again, don't get me wrong. I enjoy youthful things and the youths, being one myself. I recommend ordering the truffle friends and the mac n' cheese. Also, I'd like to add that the biscuits bounced their bacony brilliance into my open, waiting mouth. read more

Came here last night (Friday) after a long work week with my dear friend and drinking buddy, the notorious BRG. We walked in around 7:30 or 8. Not a huge dining room/bar area, so it was packed, but in a strange way comfortably so. Rather loud in there. We moseyed up to the bar to order a drink, and while waiting for our beers (DFH 90 Minute IPA...mmmm) 2 seats opened at the bar so we sat there--it was a good choice of seating. Our bartender for most of the night was Mathea (sp?). She was quite knowledgeable about the menu and beverage selection and even gave me a quick primer on a couple of scotches that she recommended. Eats: Pork short ribs. These were the biggest hit of the night, split them with BRG for an appetizer. Incredibly tender, fall-off-the-bone melt-in-your-mouth. Had great flavor, some sort of a brown sugar and soy marinade or braising liquid. Quite delicious. Bonus tip: be sure not to ignore the crispy shallot garnish. Next: Marinated skirt steak with garlic truffle cheese fries. I wasn't really feeling steak when I walked in, but I saw several people with this dish and it came with high recommendations, so I decided to go with it. Ordered medium rare, it was cooked properly, and the marinade was rather tasty. All in all, a winner. The fries were good, and the truffle was there but balanced and subtle, which I appreciate. It seems these days that chefs/cooks like to showcase that they use truffles, but overdo it. I'm not sure what kind of cheese they used, but the fries were a little rich and buttery. I'll probably just go with plain fries next time. BRG also had the same entree, though he dropped not one, but two forks and was too embarrassed to ask for a third fork. You're killin' me, Smalls! Drinks (my favorite part): Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA. Allagash Black. Oban 14yr Scotch. BRG had the Stone Levitation for this third libation. A decent selection of beers and drinks, especially for a smaller establishment. Downside: only 4 taps, everything else is in the bottle. Upside: Craft beer forward. Like. Final note, to the annoying drunk girl at the end of the bar, Bud Light, really?! I'd say I'll be back here next time I'm in Redondo. A pretty good place, with a great bartender. read more

LIke everyone else, I simply had to try this restaurant since Brooke from Top Chef owns it and I live less than a mile away. First thing I noticed was that it was incredibly loud and cramped. I could not hear myself think. The waitress was very nice and attentive. I ordered the crab mac & cheese (good but hardly any crab), toasted cauliflower (meh), the coconut lime shrimp (ok) and the grilled rockfish (boring & bland). Mediocre at its best. I also had the spicy watermelon margarita and HATED it. Definitely not for me. Lastly, and this is the real kicker, I ordered the oatmeal cookie with ice cream. The waitress told me that it would take about 15 - 20 minutes since it's made to order but I figured, how can you screw up a cookie. Well, they did. Half hour later the long awaited cookie arrived burnt to a crisp and completely inedible. My ear drums were killing me, my back was hurting and my will to even complaint was at below zero so I paid my bill and vowed to not ever come back. Brooke, I still LOVE you and you can come over to my house and cook for me anytime!!! read more

Over hyped and over priced! The selection of food was very limited and mediocre. For the high prices you would expect good service, but I got no service from my waiter once my food order was placed. The most disappointing part was the beer they had on draft. How do you call yourself a "gastropub" with only 6 beers on draft. Don't waste your money. Go to "Flights" instead. This place was awesome! My friends and I were taking a break from a busy work week and decided to visit Redondo Beach. We are not from down south (we live up north) but heard Redondo Beach was a must see. We arrived around 2:30pm on Father's Day. The house wasn't to busy considering it was Fathers Day, however there was a large party there when we arrived. Our server greeted us in a timely manner and was quick to offer us a beverage. I mentioned to her that I was an IPA fan and that I was looking for a beer that was on the hoppy and citrus side. She recommended a solid double IPA that paired perfectly with my sandwich. My friends ordered an IPA and one of my friends ordered the Campari cocktail. He really enjoyed his Campari cocktail. Our server was knowledgeable of the menu and guided us through the menu. We had the hot chicken sandwich, ribs, burger, avocado hummus, and pretzel with dipping cheese. My chicken sandwich had a nice spicy kick to it and the Hawaiian bread off set the spice. The avocado hummus was delicious and the veggies that came with it were fresh and crisp. The ribs had a ton of flavor and woke up our palettes in a good way. The sauce on the ribs definitely make the dish. Oh and I can't forget the crunchy but soft pretzel served with an amazing cheese dip. We inhaled the pretzel within 2 minutes. Everyone enjoyed the thin crispy fries they serve with sandwiches. Overall I highly recommend this spot for date night, a lunch outing with friends, a family birthday celebration and or a place to grab good food paired with a good beer. read more

Hudson House is a regular Happy Hour spot for my fiance and I because it is CHEAP and TASTY. The decor is my style, simple and modern. The bartenders have always been super friendly and the service is usually quick, also my style. We have ordered the $2 Hudson Ale, $2 Sweet Potato Fries and Regular Fries, $2 Bacon & Chive Biscuits, $3 Nuts & Olives off the Happy Hour menu. I preferred the sweet potato fries WAY over the regular fries-too thin for my taste. The bacon & chive biscuits were OK, not as exciting as I thought. On the regular menu, we have tried the meatball sandwich & fish tacos. The meatball sand. was tasty, the fish tacos were bland & tiny in size. I took two bites and those suckers were gone, definitely not worth $8. I have yet to try the other items on the menu, but I am looking forward to the pretzel burger & flank steak. The $2 Hudson Ale keeps calling my name, which is why we make the Hudson House our HH pit stop. read more

I have never had anything at Hudson House that I haven't liked. This is hands down one of the best places in the South Bay to eat and drink. They constantly tweak the menu to keep things interesting, and the quality of the food is always top notch. My favorite is the skirt steak - it is always prepared to perfection and it's a must try. It is served with truffle cheese fries (delicious) or mixed greens (if you are feeling healthy). My other favorites here are the Olives with mixed nuts and dried cherries, Edamame with peppers (must try!), Turkey Meatball Sandwich, and the Mac and Cheese. The beer selection is extensive here, and they also have some pretty creative drinks, such as the Ginger Mojito and the Watermelon-Jalapeno Margarita (also excellent). There is usually a big crowd here, so be prepared, especially if its a weekend... but this is the kind of place that people come to for good food and good fun, so just grab a drink and enjoy the wait.
