Dan from Hug plumbing was INCREDIBLE. He diagnosed a problem that 2 other plumbers wanted to replace all my pipes for 10K plus to resolve. Dan found that it was a simple issue with the flapper in a toilet and NO walls needed to be cut into and NO pipes needed replacing for thousands of dollars. He refused to assume and did everything he could to find the issue. He didn't leave until he was completely sure the problem was eliminated. My mother's home warranty company put us in contact with Hug Plumbing when the prior plumber that was assigned to fix a shower, leaking into a closet, was unable/unwilling to make the necessary repairs. I called and left a message right after the company was assigned and immediately received a text message from Dan stating he would get back to me as soon as possible. Dan called me within 20 minutes and scheduled an appt for the next morning, even though it was a Sunday. After making 2 different trips to the hardware store to find parts for a no longer manufactured plumbing system... for a 36 yr old mobile home, Dan was able to fix the leak which had rotted out the wall behind the shower. Very unprofessional company and unresponsive to customers. I was referred to this company through my home warranty insurance to fix my furnace. The man came with absolutely no tools went to my attic came back down within 10 min said the issue was fixed but couldn't tell me what happened why the furnace was blowing cold air or anything! When he left the heater was working so I overlooked my concerns. The next day the heater is out again. My home warranty tried reaching out they hung up in their face and didn't answer any other calls from them. Our heater was only blowing cold air. They came out through our home warranty. At first it was okay, they came out and made a repair. Then two weeks later the heater started acting up again. I called the home warranty company again and they told me the vendor would reach out within 24 hours. They didn't reach out. My husband tried to call. No return call. It was around Christmas so we waited TEN DAYS to hear back from them. On the 11th day I called and left another voicemail. On the 12th day I called our home warranty company, who called them - they didn't respond to them either. They dispatched another company who came out. My AC went out at the end of May, while the heat wasn't so bad. MMy warranty company sent this company out. Originally I was very pleased when the tech showed up and looked at my AC. He took a look and said that the entire system needed replaced, the pipes and inside blower also needed to be replaced. He would submit everything to the warranty company and when the new AC came in they would install the new system. IT ENDED THERE. That was over a month ago prior to the 100+ degree weather getting hear. I understand being busy. But not returning phone calls and finally calling after 2 weeks with no response only to tell me they are still waiting on parts to arrive. Fine if that had been the case, but someone would call to say "hey we are running a little behind and are busy." That would be the professional/courteous thing to do. That didn't happen. After hearing that they were still waiting on parts, I called the warranty company who said we aren't waiting on parts we have been trying to get in contact with this contractor to ask a question. The warranty company said everything was covered and approved they just needed to confirm some information with the contractor but were unable to get them or leave a message because the voicemail was full. So the owner lied about waiting on the parts. I began to try for 2 weeks straight to get in touch with them and finally was able to leave multiple voicemails pleading with them to contact me ASAP as the temp was going to be in excess of 107degrees. CRICKETS yet again. I contacted the warranty company who tried while I was on the phone with them only to come back and say nobody is answering. So this is how you treat customers (who are treated just like family)??? Glad I am not part of this family then. After the last attempt by me and the warranty company they reassigned it to another contractor and forwarded the company to their contractor relations department. DO NOT use this company. If I could give NO stars I would. There is no excuse for this, taking a minute to let the customer know what is going on would have been the right thing to do. My mom is 86. She recently purchased a home in Vacaville. Her Heating system which is placed in the garage, was primarily heating the garage and not the house due to leaks, issues, whatever. My mom contacted her home warranty contract people and they sent out someone from a different air and heating repair company. The workman stated he was unable to repair her current system and that she needed a new heater, and because Freon was not going to be available after the summer, she also needed a new air conditioner, all for approximately $13,000. My mom complained to the Real Estate Agent, who contacted the home warranty company, who then sent out a repairman from Hug Plumbing, Heating and Cooling. The repairman from Hug Plumbing, Heating and Cooling, successfully repaired the heater so that it was heating only the house. He also informed her that although Freon was going off the market, that there are adequate supplies available and that her air conditioner did not need to be replaced at this time. He spent quite a lot of time repairing the heater, he was friendly and courteous, and kind, and my mom was very happy with the service she received. read more

My home warranty hooked me up with Hug and I won't lie I was a little nervous about them when just reading reviews. We got connected to them on Friday of Easter weekend and they called Saturday to set up a time. Even though they were busy they called the next day and arranged to come Tuesday. Thankfully we had an issue that could wait that long. Dan and his son came and were very professional. I appreciated his honesty and promptness of fixing our issue and he even helped explain things to me and fixed a small issue with my sink (the original issue was my tub). This has to be the worst time for my AC to stop working because we are experiencing a heatwave, but even worse than that is to have been referred to Hug Plumbing Heating and Cooling by my home warranty company. I called in a service request Friday night. I was informed that Hug would be working on my request and to contact them if I did not hear from them within 2 days. The next day - Saturday - I anxiously waited for Hug to call me to set up an appointment. Temperatures reached 105 degrees in Fairfield that day. I didn't receive a call. At the end of the day, I looked up Hug's website to see what their hours were and saw that they were closed on Sundays. I was really disappointed because I figured I wouldn't hear from them until Monday now. I also came upon some good reviews and bad reviews about Hug. The bad reviews were mostly about them being unresponsive. That worried me. But on Sunday, much to my surprise, I received a call from Hug and they scheduled me for the upcoming Tuesday after 10am. I was excited that they called to put me on the schedule but disappointed because Tuesday was 2 days away. The heatwave was expected to last for the next several days. But again, I figured there were a lot of people experiencing issues with their ACs and that it was a busy time. Today is Tuesday - the day of my appointment that was scheduled for after 10am. It is now 5:30pm. I have called them 3 times. I text messaged them and no response. The temperature right now is 104 degrees. At this point, I assume they will not be coming. I took off work today. I sat in my house all day in this heat for NOTHING!! If there was an issue to get to my appointment today, the courteous thing to do would have been to let me know, at minimum. Now, I have to schedule another appointment for who-knows-when in this excruciating heatwave and take another day of work off to be here for it. The WORST!! Who does that?? UPDATE!! So after I wrote this review, I received a call from Dan at 6pm. He calls and asks me if I am still expecting him to come out for service. I told him yes! I took off work for them to come out here and I've been waiting all day. He told me that he was at the office and just read my review. He said that he didn't appreciate me "ripping him a new one" and not giving him a chance to come out to do the work. I thought to myself - are you kidding me??!! I've been waiting for 8 hours in 100+ degree heat. I told him I called several times and left messages. He told me that he doesn't have all day to sit around the office to answer the phone. (Umm...ok...but you have time to read Yelp reviews and respond to express your hurt feelings???) He then told me that he was going to tell his guy not to come out to my house to work on my AC (as if they were on their way! Yeah right!). I hung up after he said that because that's petty to me and unprofessional. My thing is, if I wrote this review prematurely and he called to apologize for the delay and said they were on their way to service my AC, I would have removed this review and apologized as well. But instead, he called with lame excuses and decided not to do the work because of my review. I am frustrated and the fact that he did not address that makes me not want to give him my business or refer anyone to give him their business. Sam showed up during the appointment window, took a look at it and knew right away that it and replaced it. He was very friendly, professional, and did a great job! If you have a home warranty, good luck! You'll need it if they send someone from Hug. After reading the other Yelp reviews, and from my own experience, it's clear this company does not like working with customers who have a home warranty. We have a five-month-old baby and have been without heat for almost two weeks. We called Fidelity National Home Warranty, and they don't work with any HVAC companies in Napa where we live, so they assigned Hug from Santa Rosa, who never actually called us. I had to call Fidelity to ask why we hadn't heard from anyone yet and they gave me the phone number to call directly. Someone named Mark (who said he was based in Vacaville, not Santa Rosa, and only comes to Napa once a week, so I'm guessing he's a subcontractor) came to our house a few days later on Wednesday last week, said we had a gas leak and the whole furnace would need to be replaced. He said it should take no more than a week to get a replacement installed, and our only cost would be the $75 deductible. Great! We were relieved. Five days later, on Monday, we still hadn't heard from Mark, despite calling and leaving a few messages. We called Fidelity and they hadn't even received a report from Mark/Hug yet. Uh, WTF? So we called our real estate agent who called her rep, and when we finally heard back from Fidelity, they told us it would cost us about $2,000 OUT OF POCKET because of California Title 24, which no one ever mentioned might be an issue prior to this experience. We still haven't heard from Hug, who our real estate agent says is trying to gouge us (claiming a permit which should cost no more $150 will cost us $350, and a vent vacuum test or something will cost $700 when it should only cost about $250, and on and on. We haven't actually seen this estimate. The Fidelity rep told our real estate agent, who told us.) Apparently home warranty companies pay these HVAC companies shit money to service their customers, so they get their money back by price-gouging. It's the day before Thanksgiving, and still no heat, but if Hug even tries to call me at this point, I will tell them off. I have called a few local HVAC companies to find out who can come assess our furnace the soonest, and if we have to pay out of pocket and try to get reimbursed by Fidelity, I would rather do that at this point, than trust anything anyone at Hug has to say. Hug may be a reputable company if you call them directly without a home warranty as middle man. But if you have a home warranty and they recommend Hug, stay away! They probably don't care anyway if they lose home warranty customers, and you'll be better off calling someone out of network for an estimate. read more

Steve from Hug Plumbing came out to have a look at a clogged drain line. The line had been snaked a couple of times (once by another plumbing company, and another time by myself) but that didn't manage to fix the problem for more than a few days. Steve offered to snake the line again; we took him on that, as he had a snake with a narrower cable designed to go around tight bends in smaller lines. The narrower cable was able to go farther down the line than was previously managed, so a good start. Steve really made me a fan, though, with his tenaciousness and desire to really understand the problem. Without getting into details, the drainage system was showing some strange symptoms, and Steve spent a good 2 hours working to figure out what is going on. He crawled under the house several times. He snaked the drain a few times, put the snake back on his truck, but then decided to haul it back in the house to run it down again, just to be sure about something. He spent time working through various theories and discussing them with me. He did all this even though he was charging a flat (and very competitive) fee to do the job, and even though the company does not guarantee drain cleaning (which is not unusual). In other words: he was putting in the effort just because he wanted to do a good job! Due to the nature of the problem, he wasn't able to fully resolve it during the visit, but he did as much as anybody could be expected to do, and more. Inspite of their busy schedule, they squeezed me in because they knew that we have an elderly and kids at home. Mark came and checked the unit. He knew right away that the fan motor was defective. Our furnace went out the week before Thanksgiving, and after a bad experience with a different company, we called our home warranty company who sent us Hug Plumbing. They came the next day, which was great for us, since we had been without heat for days. I think the technician who came was Mark, who was terrific. We told him the problem and what we had tried already. He did some logical troubleshooting and within 15 or 20 minutes fixed our furnace. We were extremely happy. The reason we were so happy (besides having heat after several very cold days) is that we had a rather bad experience with a different local plumbing/heating company a couple of days earlier. (I reviewed that company on Yelp, as well.) After spending very little time looking at our furnace issue, acting as though he really didn't know what he was doing, and being incredibly rude to boot, the guy from the other company told us we needed a new furnace!! We were sure he was wrong, which is why we wanted another opinion. Had we listened to the other company, we would have been stuck paying for a new furnace. I do not recommend Hug because they did not return any messages I left before and after work was performed, did not fix the problem to completion and did not represent themselves professionally. Hug Company technician came out to our home on a Sunday to fix the AC. We have a home warranty through Fidelity and called on FRIDAY for a service and the earliest anyone could make a service call to our home was Sunday. Our home has been over 90 degrees for over 72 hours now because of the AC outage. I called repeatedly asking if anyone could come earlier but no response. I always received the answering machine every time I called Hug, never a person. The technician showed up in an unmarked truck. No signage for Hug Company on it. He did not wear any Hug labeled clothing. The tech said a power wire PG&E smart meter was melted and caused the issue. He disabled the smart meter. AC unit powered up and blew cool air. Powered down fine. Powered back up fine and blew cool air. WE PAID FOR THE SERVICE AS REQUIRED BY THE FIDELITY HOME WARRANTY. I close all the windows in the house, go outside to let the house cool down. Return into the house one hour later. The AC in NOT WORKING. The temp inside the house is 88 degrees. I call Hug Company - get the answering machine, leave desperate message again. I wait 30 minutes, call again, same thing. No response. EVER. It seems like HUG sends out subcontractors for their work. They do not follow up on poor service experiences or to get it right. I believe they would not call me back because I was a "home warranty service request". I will tell you that this experience left me feeling that Hug Company is unethical and feel that they are operating a scam as a service provider for Fidelity National Home Warranty service requests. That's how I feel - I'm not saying its a fact. [And as an FYI...I called Fidelity Home Warranty again to explain that the issue reoccurred less than two hours after Hug Company technician left and guess what? They can't get Hug Company to call back for a return visit. So now I have to pay another service fee for a NEW service provider who still hasn't call to schedule an appointment. If you have Fidelity Home Warranty and have been assigned a crappy plumbers in the past due to slightly lower costs, except no substitutes and demand hug plumbing. After having been assigned two different plumbers from my home warranty company, finally we get one who is competent, considerate, efficient and respectful. Sam called us yesterday to say that he was in the area and saw our claim come through via Fidelity and could he come help us out. Boy did he ever. I have now had to use Hug twice ... once when the furnace went out and now, again, when the air conditioner went out. Both happened probably the worst time of the respective seasons for a breakdown; however, all was repaired in a timely manner and is working great! I would agree w/ other reviewers when it comes to the company being slow to return calls. But, in Hug's defense, my emergency isn't necessarily theirs ~ so I would recommend patience. (And, BTW, when I say 'slow' to return call ... I'm talking the day after i leave a vm which is why I still give 5 star review.) In both instances I've dealt w/ Chez (apologize if spelled incorrectly) and he's been nothing but great ~ particularly in the case of the furnace. (He had to work w/ the home warranty company to get the specific part and Old Republic took longer than I would have liked!) Highly, highly recommend Hug. read more

We had another company come to do a "tune-up" of our a/c system. They said there was ice building up on the pipes from the furnace and there may be a leak. I realized I still have the home warranty so I called them and they sent out Dave from Hug instead. Dave looked at the ice build up and said our a/c unit is not design well to be split between upstairs and downstairs. It will always freeze up unless we take out one of the thermostats and clear some of the flaps of the ducts. He checked the freon level and read the label on the a/c unit in a few minutes and said everything is where it should be. He added a bit freon to top off. He said if there was a leak, we wouldn't be getting any cold air at all since the systems PSI is over 700 on each of the pipes. Dave is very technical and definitely knows his stuff. Dave wrote up a very detailed report on the invoice. It is probably the nicest invoice paper I have ever received by any maintenance company. Very neat writing and took the time to explain on the invoice what he exactly did. He even wrote down a note for the filter size for me to replace, which might help with the ice build up. I asked Dave if we need to do a "tune-up" or clean out any ducts each year, he said our machine is pretty new and there's not much to do except for changing filters. Very honest, friendly and respectful. I know they are not a local company for me, used them under the home warranty but I hope Dave can help us in the future again. read more

I was set up with Hug PH&C through my home warranty company a couple of weeks ago to service my central heating system. Hug contacted me and set up an appointment last week. The person who called said he would be there "after 12", but gave no window of time. I waited until 6pm and the technician never showed. I then called several numbers listed for Hug before someone picked up. I gave the guy who picked up the phone my address, and he told me that the technician might not have come to my house because the "papers were stuck together." I get it-accidents happen. Since we've had no heat in our house for a couple of weeks now (it's currently 45 degrees inside our home), I requested he call me back and let me know what time the tech would be arriving. He said he'd call the technician to find out and confirmed he'd call me back. That never happened. There was also no follow-up call the day after or even now a week later. I contacted my home warranty company again to request a different provider. I get that businesses are affected during COVID, but you would think they'd be doing their absolute best to try and survive. But to not even call a customer you had scheduled with that night, the following day, or even the following week...? I don't get it. In summary: unprofessional. read more

That said, I put in a service order through my home warranty company on a Tuesday and they were at my home by Thursday. AC is fixed and we're no longer melting at home. We used Hug through our Home Warranty for a property in Marin where the furnace wouldn't turn on. I was really impressed with Chez (apologies if the spelling isn't correct!). He had to make two visits, the second visit I really appreciated his patience as it wasn't as productive as the first visit (not his fault! user error). He was really great at explaining everything and put in extra effort to help, even showing me how to change the filters and leaving extra screws for the screen. This review is for Dave (he's the only person I dealt with from the company) I moved into my home 10 months ago and have had the same problem with my AC since the middle of last summer. The AC unit was randomly shutting off and the fan would continue blowing hot air into the house. I had made FOUR other calls and technicians before getting Hug Plumbing assigned to us by our home warranty. They all said the same thing "Nothing is wrong with it and it should work fine now I made an adjustment." Well, that was never the case. Of course every time it has acted up has been in the middle of a heat wave. I even had an electrician come look at the breakers and yet nothing worked. Once again in the middle of having 103 degree weather in Vacaville and no way to cool the house for my 14 month old, I found myself on the phone once again with my warranty company. I got a message saying I had been assigned Hug Plumbing. Dave called so quickly that day I was in shock. He was SO nice and extremely empathetic to the fact that I had a little guy at home and was trying to get out to me ASAP (The very FIRST person out of all the calls to really care that I had a baby in a 100 degree house by the way). He got out to our home within 24 hours, was super sweet and patient with my son (even when he tried to pull out some of his tools while Dave was explaining things to me *head smack*), all while what seemed to be teaching the young man who was with him about everything he was doing. I could go on and on about the amazing experience I had dealing with Dave. Really long story short, he came out, found the issue and fixed it. None of this "I adjusted this or that" No. He gave me an honest answer and honest advice. Thanks to him I have a happy and well rested toddler and a nice cool home when it's 100+ outside. These are the guys to call! We've had more than a dozen Contractors through our house over the years but none stand out like HUG PLUMBING. They have done a number of things for us; water heater, washer hoses, shower hardware, vent cleaning, heater and A/C tune ups..... They truly know their stuff. They always explain the whats and whys so we can make informed decisions. They do beautiful / quality work and clean up after themselves. They also care about us as their customers and spend the time to listen and understand what we've asked of them before carrying out their services. Their prices are excellent. If I could give them less than 1 star I would. My heater was acting up, so I order the yelp deal. A nice enough fellow shows up and terrifies me with stories of carbon monoxide seeping through my system into the house, and how he legally needs to shut off my heater, and it will cost me about $900 to fix the issue, but a new heater will be between $1500 and $3000 so I should just get a new one. With the fear of God in my heart at this point, I grab my dog and evacuate the house. Several days go by, I installed a CO2 monitor with no indication of contamination. I decide to get a second opinion since they had not sent me an estimate. Another company came out and said there was no carbon monoxide, and it would cost me approx $200 to replace the electrical panel. I couldn't believe my ears, could it be that nice young man lied to me? Tried to rip me off? Can you believe it?!? Well, still holding on to the belief that mankind is inherently good, I check one last time. I call up PG&E, a trusted friend.
