We came long ago when they first opened. I was hoping for brisket but there was none. I chose pork ribs and green beans. The ribs were fall off the bone, juicy with a sauce. It included a drink for the Lil bites plate. Hubs ordered fried chicken, green beans and fried okra. I tasted one of his okra and it was very crispy- I'm going to get that next time. Much improved from about 10 years ago when I went there last! My son who was visiting suggested that we go visit there and so the 3 of us made the trek to Aiea. A really nice surprise and all the Yelpers are correct! Food taste good... everything was good! Pork chops, fried chicken, Catfish, collard greens, okra, hushpuppies... all well seasoned and perfectly battered and fried. Yum! Prices seemed to be on the higher side for certain things (like $45 oxtail?) .. but hey, I guess things are expensive nowadays and places gotta survive and pay their bills. Oh Ken Ney what have you done? My Daughter-in-Law took all the orders for family and friends yesterday in order to pick up food for dinner. I'm usually craving the Shrimp and Grits but I actually made that for dinner earlier this week so I ordered the fried chicken with Collard greens and Potato salad. When I opened the take out box I was met with several surprises. First, the color of my favorite fried chicken was dark dark brown instead of golden brown. Yes there were three big pieces but it didn't look like the same chicken served here for over ten years. The Collard greens were in a pint plastic see through container and missing the ham or bacon, the potato salad was in the same size container as the greens and that wonderful cornbread was wrapped in Saran Wrap. All of this was tucked into a cardboard take out box. I'm not sure why a change has happened to your previous wonderful chicken but it was definitely not southern fried. Maybe it's become Cajun fried but regardless it was fried way too long and completely dried out...not a juicy morsel in any of the three pieces. I ate one of the pieces and needed a knife to cut it as it was tough from over frying. The collard greens lacked the fatty element a bit of ham or bacon added as previously served. The potato salad was excellent and wowza on the cornbread. I hate to put your business on parr with those drive thru chains but you've done yourself a disservice with this change. Those of us that ordered the chicken said the same thing...what the heck happened. The others with Catfish, Wings and Pork Chops were happy. This review is a two and a half star bumped to three as the other four if six dinner orders were good but since I'm the author of this review I give that chicken two stars or less. read more

Last minute decision after a long day touring Pearl Harbor. OMG! This hidden gem was the Best decision ever! The young lady who greeted and took our orders was very patient and kind. Definitely a blessing! They were able to help with Gluten Free questions I had as well. Catfish is gluten free. Cornbread is not. Not sure about cross contamination issues for Celiac folks, though. The portion did not disappoint and neither did the flavors! Sweet tea was also on point! Played old skool R&B jazz music which was nice. We decided to dine in because there were 4 of us and two are 79 & 84, finicky and there weren't many diners which we preferred. However, they were satisfied and we had leftovers! Who knew Hawaii had such delicious fried chicken?! If you have the craving for southern fried chicken, THIS is the place. There is ample parking in the shopping center too. When you enter, they have a large menu displayed that you can pick and choose from (they also have specials and notes written). I ordered the Lil' Bit Plate with the fried chicken wings choice and mac and cheese for my side. They were out of wings, but they subbed it for drumsticks which was fine by me. For $15- you get 2 drumsticks, mac and cheese AND a drink?! What a steal! This is a better deal than fast food chicken places!! The drinks came quickly and the sweet iced tea was so refreshing. It had the perfect sweetness that complimented the food. The chicken was crispy and flavorful on the outside, yet juicy on the inside. The mac and cheese was cheesy and definitely made in house. You could taste the love and passion in the food!! This was my first time having Soul food/ Southern Cuisine and I must say, I am in love. I went to a company party years ago where they catered food...one was catfish. I didn't want to try it because we used to catch these in the river and never thought of eating them. A co-worker said to just try a piece so I would at least know what it tastes like. I did...it was delicious! I always order food from Queen Street Cafe which is located 2 doors away from this place located in the Aiea Town Square. Once, I viewed Hughley's menu and "Catfish" caught my eye. I later read some of the comments on Yelp. People spoke highly about their chicken/chicken wings/catfish and many other items. Today, I ordered the Classic Combo which includes 2 pieces of catfish with 4 pieces of wings (2 drumettes/2 flats). It also comes with cornbread and 2 sides so I chose baked beans and rice. The catfish had a crispy batter and the fish was so soft and tender...tarter sauce was very tasty. The wings was so crispy and tasty and the baked beans was good but nothing special! As for the cornbread, it was moist, buttery and oh-so-good...yum! My husband ordered the Pork Spare Ribs 1/2 rack, chose the mash with gravy and baked beans sides...his also came with cornbread. The ribs was soft and meaty, had lots of sauce so it was delicious. The only disappointment was the mash and gravy. The mash was too soft and creamy, almost the same texture as the gravy so it was hard to eat with a fork...wish it was firmer. Their dine-in section looked so nice, clean and spacious. They had 3 tables next to each other that can accommodate a party for 18 people, a few booths, tables and chairs. Finally decided to give this place another chance.. and sadly they got worse. Their porkchops are still delicious and super tender but it was cold like it was sitting out. The fried okra was good and the only thing we ordered that came out hot. Corn bread was super dry Baked beans tasted like canned pork and beans. Green beans tasted like canned green beans. But they were more firm so maybe they are frozen not canned. The black eyed peas needed just a little more seasoning, but they were still very tasty . I really loved my fried pork chops . They were very tender . I only ate one you get so much food . We ordered sides of the macaroni and cheese (excellent), candied yams (excellent), collard greens (excellent), potato salad (excellent, and Cole slaw ( it was okay we didn't really care for the taste . You definitely get your money's worth here. We ordered sweet potato pie delicious . We were supposed to get cornbread, but I think they forgot to put it with the order.. To be clear, the 4th star is for the cornbread alone. Everything else was either average or too salty but the cornbread alone was worth the drive from town! It is sweet, moist, soft, and cakey: just how I dream of cornbread being! Since I am not a huge meat fan, but HUGE side lover, the veggie plate was a great pick for me (3 sides and cornbread). I chose hush puppies (get them every time they are on a menu), mac and cheese, and I was between the potato salad and red beans and rice, but they recommended the salad. Sidenote: I very clearly asked if there was any relish or pickles in the potato salad since that is an automatic NO if the answer is yes, since I HATE cucumbers of any sort. They weren't sure so they went back to check. While I am not positive, these green pieces distinctly look like pickles. So, with that being said, I would have liked the salad but since it appears to have pickles, I am repulsed. I chose to imagine them as celery, but ultimately could not get away from the pickle-like appearance and taste. Yuck! The sides are all meatless so I was interested to see how their collard greens and black eyed peas would taste sans meat. They were just ok. A bit bland. Fried okra was as expected, but just like the hush puppies and mac n cheese: too heavy on the salt for my liking. As with most places, just ok means I will still try it again, maybe next time for Gumbo day on Thursday or just to see if I like the red beans and rice. But I WILL be back for the cornbread. Other than assuring me there was no pickles in the potato salad (which I am pretty sure there definitely is), the girls up front were also very pleasant. Growing up in NYC in a diverse but mostly Hispanic/black community, I ate food at every neighbors home , especially families from "Down South ". In addition to eating regularly at the renowned Sylvia's in Harlem , so I know Southern food. Mr H. has been cooking up a marvelous menu for in Hawai'i for many years. I'm not sure how to express our gratitude for this restaurant. I took a half star off once on a review because I drove downtown they were closed and had to drive to Aiea for my collard greens fix. First timer and I was impressed! I highly suggest getting the pork chops, chicken and the MAC AND CHEESE! So good! Order on the QR code on the menu and pay on your phone. How convenient and the wait time was not that bad. Area is located next to Aiea's post office by Queens St. Cafe. Parking goes all the way in the back so not a problem. The fried chicken was over cooked, it's like the grease was too hot, old, or left it in the fryer too long. And, the only thing I could taste in the macaroni and cheese was pepper. Came in for a take out lunch. I decided on the Thursday special which was gumbo for $15. The gumbo was tasty and had a decent amount of chicken and sausage in it. The food reminds me of home and I appreciate everything about it. I always get the catfish and short ribs with potato salad and Mac and cheese. All the deserts are amazing I usually have to rotate through the selection each visit. It's consistent and delicious every time. The staff are always on point as well. While it is kind of hidden I think that lends to its appeal. I was struggling to find a good southern spot to eat at since moving to Hawaii but this place keeps my hopes up and I look forward to eating there again in the near future. read more

I am FROM the South (Georgia to be exact) and the rest of this food transports me right back to my grandma's kitchen where she made her famous collard greens and fried up the best pork chops in the WORLD. The owner of this place is a Navy veteran like myself and he is truly one of the kindest souls! Also, his sweet daughters work here as well and they make the atmosphere just so bright and airy. Now on to the food.... It is hands down TRUE southern comfort food. Southern cooking at its best! February is the month to honor and support Black Owned Businesses. Hughley's (pronounced Hu-Lee's= the G is silent). Delicious, did I say delicious? GUMBO. Prepared, Offered and Served once a week on Thursdays. With Covid protocol in action: 1) There is no in house dining. Take out only! 2) Phone and Internet ordering available 3) No Mask No Food 4) Hand sanitizers available upon entry when picking up your food So, after a couple weeks of craving Hughley's food, I get my order in on a THURSDAY so I can have the gumbo. In addition to the Gumbo, my order included the infamous braised oxtail, and fried pork chops. Both came with sides and I chose the cole slaw and potato salad. Both the oxtail and pork chops came with corn bread and mashed potato. I also ordered a side of hush puppies. The orders were neatly packed to prevent spills and also to keep the food warm. Fortunately and with the stay at home work orders, traffic was relatively mild and easy to get to Aiea from downtown Honolulu (approximately 15 minutes which would have been 45 minutes under normal traffic conditions) There is a post script to this review and my current experience with Hughley's: I got home and opened my package of delicious southern cooking to find: What? No cornbread! No Mashed Potato!! NO!! NO!! I waited and craved Hughley's food for a couple week and NO CORNBREAD! NO MASHED POTATO. I called over to Hughley's and Ken (owner) answered the phone. I politely explained that my order was without the cornbread and mashed potatol He engaged in a nice conversation and offered to credit/refund me for the mistake and short order! Now how nice is that? Well, I explained it wasn't the money but my cravings were shattered!!! So Hughley's delivered cornbread to me instead!!! Now how nice is that? Yum, yum, yum! I've had a craving for Southern fried catfish for a long time. This place hits! The catfish was so tender & moist but a perfectly crisp outside. It was coated with cornmeal & dashed with cajun seasoning. In the picture is 2 mini catfish plates (3 pieces of catfish, 1 side + cornbread) plus an additional side. The mini plates also come with a beverage. I believe the bill was $35 before tip. I absolutely think it was worth every penny. What I appreciated about this place was they supplement if you have a smaller sized piece. So I actually ended up with 4 pieces. The collard greens were tasty, my mom didn't care for the black eye peas but overall everything was delicious. Service was great. I believe she's the owner daughter. Ah southern charm 101, lol. I've been craving real southern grub recently, and recall Hughley's Southern Cuisine in Aiea, just a stones throw from Pearl Harbor. I'm half a world away from homegirl Reese Witherspoon and Alabama, but my tastebuds remind me how legit this place is... so I strap on my hunting boots and off to Hughley's I go. COVID guidelines still in place on my visit, I order the following: Beef Brisket (mini), Mashed Potatoes w/ Gravy, Cornbread (sides) and Lemonade. On my next visit I order: BBQ Pork Ribs (mini). Mac n Cheese, Cornbread (sides), and Arnold Palmer. I add a Sweet Potato Pie. So yes, as you can see I took two trips within a few days because it was that Sweet Home Alabama good! It brought memories of boot camp and being the RL Forrest Gump. To-go but that was fine by me! In the end, I recommend Hughley's Southern Cuisine to all. Get that Mac n Cheese! My wife and I decided to try out this soul food restaurant today. It was a little disappointing. But then again if you're one of the very few soul food restaurants on the island I guess you have very little or no competition. So I guess if you really want soul food and you don't know how to cook it this might be the place to go. First of all I would say that I don't like tipping after living in Asia, and I believe that because of the way they're built (you place your order from your phone and then they simply bring the food out drop it off) it doesn't really constitute a full service restaurant to me and I don't understand why they're asking for tips. It would be better if you just place your order and then they place the food on the counter, then you go and pick it up, problem solved. The staff was friendly and kind, of course, so nothing against them but I'm always looking to minimize cost especially when the food here is very expensive for what you get. I will rate each item that we received and list the price that I remember. I ordered a half a rack of barbecue ribs and side order of mac and cheese and collard greens this also came with a piece of cornbread which was more like cake. The ribs didn't have a barbecue taste at all. It tastes strictly like oven baked ribs which I really do not like. They were tender and they fell off the bone but to me the ribs weren't really that good. He definitely tasted homemade though I mean this is what you would expect when you go to like a cousin's house or a get together with friends. The collard greens were a little bland I prefer my greens cooked with smoked ham hocks in it. For me the highlight of the whole meal was probably the mac and cheese and for my wife it was the fried okra. Normally I always expect mac and cheese to taste like instant mac and cheese but surprisingly this mac and cheese actually had the texture of real melted cheese and was stringy with every fork full. It taste was pretty good actually. My wife said the okra was fried and it was very crispy and tasty. We also ordered fried pork chops with mashed potatoes and gravy as a side and the fried okra obviously. The mashed potatoes didn't really taste that good it almost tasted like instant potatoes from a box but we couldn't tell for sure. When we make potatoes at home they always have a fresh potato taste in the mashed potatoes which is something we look for this one was very smooth which made me feel like it wasn't made from fresh potatoes but I could be wrong. The pork chops were tasty but they seemed somewhat overcooked and they were kind of unappealing as far as looks go because of how they were cooked. The last thing that we ordered was a slice of sweet potato pie which in my opinion was quite pricey at $7.50 for a slice of pie in my opinion this sweet potato pie was a little too soft for my taste and also it was undercooked on the bottom. It's obvious that the baker didn't pre-cook the crust for a few minutes before they actually added the custard. And to make things worse they don't make their own pie crust which I think is important if you're going to sell your own specialty sweet potato pie. Hawaii is full of opportunities for people that are excellent cooks and entrepreneurs and of course I understand why they jumped into this niche but honestly I feel as though they need to tweak their recipes and their menu a bit. I actually went there with the determination to order brisket which I found out is no longer on the menu. For two people, two meals, and a slice of sweet potato pie and tap water as our beverage we spent $68 which in my opinion is definitely pricey. Overall I think this place has potential if they tweak their recipes a little bit I think they could be good and here to stay. But being from Detroit a place that is all about it soul food and having roots from Louisiana I'm very picky about my soul food and they definitely would not make it if they were in either Louisiana or Detroit. read more

Had a bit of time to kill at lunchtime (waiting for dad to get his hair cut) so I I decided to support local. So happy! Went in the check on vegan options and Hughley was able to give me a run down of the options best suited for me. Options included the red beans & rice, collard greens, green beans, fries, and maybe a few other things - but I was gunning for the collards & red beans and rice anyway so once he said those I was like sold! Some home I couldn't pass up trying the "famous fries" so I added those on as choice 3. Yum It came with cord bread for less than $13 & I took it for dad; he likes cornbread. Hughley's has it's day and when it does it HITS! This plate was yummy and a nice portion size so I was able to split it into two servings. Who doesn't love that LOL The plates here are a pretty penny though, this plate alone was over $20 with no drink, I believe it was $25 after tax for the plate. It's pretty quiet at Hughleys so it's a nice place to have lunch, I hardly eat here because they close so early I wish they had a dinner special. Lol The service here is usually great! The front employees have been personable and attentive for the most part; there was a time when I needed questions answered about menu items and allergen concerns and I received a lot of "I don't knows" back so I ended up just playing it super safe. Other than the candied yams (really sweet but still yummy) and famous French fries (which are really good when they're good and can be greasy if not made well) my family and I are not fans of most side options available, I will say after adding some vinegar and Louisiana hot sauce at home to the greens they hit. It's unfortunate that they charge for small portions of hot sauce as well because I think a sauce like hot sauce is a given when it comes to a soul food plate. I found this spot on my way to a different restaurant. I have not seen southern food in Hawaii yet and decided to give this place a try. Kyra provided stellar customer service. When I asked questions, she offered samples to ensure I would be happy with my choice. When I asked about each entrée item, she gave me a detailed description of the taste and best combinations. I ended up ordering the "create a combo plate." I chose the smothered pork chop, cat fish, collard greens, mac'n'cheese, and an Arnold Palmer. When I say that everything was cooked to perfection.... the smothered pork chop was so tender. The gravy was smooth and complemented the flavor of the meat. The cat fish was savory, peppered, and flawlessly flaky. The collard greens had a more tangy flavor, no meat, but perfectly offset the saltiness in the other two entrees. The mac'n'cheese was baked and had all of the sharpness that I love. It was just the right consistency. The cornbread was a soft, sweet, welcome addition to the medley of flavors and textures. The Arnold Palmer was a balanced harmony of sweet and sour. I enjoyed the food so much, I went back inside to tell Kyra and let the chef know they did an excellent job. Buttermilk brined fried chicken, tender with good salinity all the way to the bone. Crisp on the outside, not greasy. As wings, lots of different texture, as thighs, juicy goodness. Cornmeal catfish, firm, still moist, crispy crust with the hint of cayenne pepper heat. The fish, a hint of pleasing muddiness. Excellent slow braised oxtails. Fall off the bone tender, well braised, coated in a uber flavorful braising jus and finished with a good kick of cayenne for warming heat. This one, as good as what I've experienced in Charleston SC. Great scratch made sides. Red beans and rice, flavorful enough to be a meal on its own. Well stewed collards and black eye peas both retaining texture, well seasoned with a good spice kick. Agreeable fried okra, cole slaw, and of course honey sweet yams. Dessert level sweetness but the perfect foil against the saltier and spicier sides. And while the chicken and catfish is not as hot, crisp on the outside, oozing juices on the inside like that first fresh bite in the restaurant... Now imagine the chair... read more

Haven't been here in quite awhile, but was in the area so made a stop. Ordered the fried chicken wings plate. I remember it being the full tri-part Wing here before, but not no more. It is a tiny drumette that looks more like from a quail sizewise. Not joking! Taste was okay. Little dry. Truly disappointed to be honest! I know times are hard, but kinda expensive for such tiny tiny tiny wing drumettes. It's like they broke apart the tri-part and gave you just one of the 3 sections. It's the 4th of July and I was in the mood for barbecue so headed over to Hughley's, which I've been to before. Today I made my own combo of catfish, pork spareribs, collard greens, red beans and rice, and cornbread. To be clear only takeout is being offered right now so the included picture is my own plating at home! There were two pieces of catfish that were still very crunchy even after being in a closed box on the drive home. The smaller piece was a little dry, but the larger piece was cooked perfectly and nicely seasoned. It does come with tartar sauce. The pork spareribs could use a little more smokey flavor, but the meat was soft with a slight vinegar/tangy sauce. For the sides I really liked the collard greens which were lightly salted and had a hint of heat. The red beans and rice was on the soupy and sticky side so I'd prefer more rice. The cornbread was excellent with nice amount of butter and sweet taste. It was just moist enough that it wasn't dry and they package it separately in a plastic bag. It is $20 for the choose your own combo, but there's enough food you can stretch it to two meals which is reasonable. It's hard to get southern food in Hawaii so I'm thankful we have Hughley's! read more

Hughley's Southern Cuisine has everything for everyone. I got the Create Your Own Combo: Fried Catfish and Fried Wings w/ Collared Greens and Mac n' Cheese as my two sides. Their fried batter is just so uniquely (and AMAZINGLY) crunchy yet crispy--I've never had anything like it before. I'd also totally recommend their mac n cheese and collard greens, both works so well with the fried goodies. My only complaint is that I wished the food was warmer when I got it, but it may also have to do with the 15 min drive back home. They also give you FREE cornbread and oh god, it's one of the best cornbread I've had on the island thus far. I also want to make note that they have EXCELLENT service here! This place needs a manager who knows how to manage. Either that, or stop the bleeding and shut it down. Always out of something... straws, napkins, take out boxes, menu items (ENTREES!), plastic forks, and they're even out of a restroom. If you're in need of one, you take your chances by walking upstairs to see if the comic store is open and will permit you to use theirs. The place is dirty and not inviting at all. The manager is young, does not have a reliable means of transportation, making it difficult to shop and bring in the things that are needed to operate consistently. Hopefully the "servers" are paid more than minimum wage because this place doesn't have the volume to generate tips for them. It's no wonder they don't have long term employees; NO ONE could earn a living working here! read more

My husband and I first had food from Hughley's from their food truck last summer and the catfish & fries were good! This time I tried the fried chicken wings with catfish & some fried okra. The fried chicken was dry & overcooked. Needless to say I was disappointed. I don't know why its so hard to find good southern fried chicken here in Honolulu read more

Owner of Hughley's, I advise you to fire the waitress with the bad attitude. She is running your customers away. I use to enjoy coming and bringing others to your restaurant but I have no plans on coming back because of the attitude of the young lady who waited on us. Also, TIPS SHOULD NOT BE GIVEN PRIOR TO SERVICE RENDERED! I have never paid a tip in a sit down restaurant prior to being served. People go to a restaurant for both the food and the experience. Your food is good but the experience is lacking. read more
