My friend treated me to have lunch here. I decided to go with 2 meat choices. I had the pulled pork and pork ribs with corn. I thought the pulled pork would be a lot better since it's smoked. I was wrong. I've enjoyed smoked meat before and it's good so my expectations may have been a bit high. Being a local I think the kalua pig from Helena's is so much better but this review is for TEX 808 BBQ & Brews. The pork ribs were a little on the dry side and it certainly wasn't fall off the bone tender and juicy. The spicy dipping sauce really helped the ribs out. I thought the corn on the cob was good but I really like corn. As for the service, it was top notch. They were friendly, helpful and fast. Didn't take long to get our food at all. Unlimited refills for soft drinks and tea. Lots of parking and line moves quickly. Lots of Texas memorabilia on the walls to give you that you're in Texas kind of vibe. The only items that were hot was the Baked Beans and the Corn. The meat and the mac & cheese were room temperature... that ruined the experience for me. Dinner in Honolulu, Hawaii... We tried to go to the new Pepper Lunch at Moanalua Shopping Center, but the line was long. I had been to the Las Vegas location with my Twinsie, Joyce W. of Arizona... and i have happy memories of Pepper Lunch... Anyway... TEX 808 BBQ & Brews was along the strip of businesses. There was no line and several tables were available. It was relatively clean, bright and nicely air-conditioned. Service was alright. We heard the cashier offer BBQ sauce to other customers, "spicy, mild, or sweet). We weren't offered any sauce. I was looking around for a condiment area, but only found salt and pepper shakers. My friend asked for sauce and was offered spicy or mild. All three of us got the mild sauce which was a bit tangy. When we heard that there was a sweet sauce, my friend stood up again to ask for the sweet sauce and only got one container. Later, my friend asked for hand wipes. The staff pointed to a can of wipes. I ordered the Double meat plate which comes with two sides. I chose brisket and ribs... and corn and slaw. The sauce made the tender meats flavorful. The slaw could use more seasoning. I guess I was wrong. 3 tiny slivers of dry overcooked brisket, couple of hard turkey. Everything was like jerky. I remember liking this place before, what happened? I wanted to like it, since I was really craving BBQ and my go to spot around the corner was closed today. I'd compare it to a Dickeys. The pork and brisket were on the dry side, I would blame it on being under a heater for the day but I went around 11am, so it shouldn't have tasted as dry as it was. Mac n cheese was average. I got the Brisket, Sausage, and Smoked Chicken Quarter leg. My sides that I selected were the Baked Beans, and Mustard Dill Potato Salad. This meal also comes with a roll. Unfortunately, the brisket was extremely dry, maybe it was the slices that I got or the time of day. I've tasted better. Fortunately the Sausages and the Chicken Quarter leg was juicy. Definitely a different experience! Being from Oahu, I thought the pulled pork would be similar to Kalua Pork but it isn't. There wasn't much flavor to it. The portions aren't monster-sized but generous and will satisfy a pretty good appetite. Location - very convenient - in Moanalua Shopping Center close to Koa Pancake House and in the old Taco Del Mar space. It's basically a grab and go place but there are a few tables inside and out. The staff is friendly and will gladly explain why their BBQ is the best, We had the "double" which includes 2/3 pound of two different meats and two sides. You can choose from St Louis Style Ribs, brisket, sausage, turkey breast (why?), pulled-pork and wings. Sides include baked beans, mac n cheese (awesome!), slaw, potato salad (vinegar-based). The plates come with a Hawaiian sweet roll and dill chips. The BBQ sauces are on the side and compliment the hand-rubbed meats well. The "house" is great, but DO NOT be afraid of the "hot" or don't pass-up the "sweet" sauce either. Prices - this AIN'T a cheap eat. The guy David has a big Texas hat, local Braddah and super friendly and helpful with my mom explaining what the sides were, comparing it to local foods. Loved it! This is my treat after I get my nails done. I've already been pampered. Then I walk in here and the staff greets you like they've been waiting for you. They are always warm, friendly, and helpful. I couldn't finish the sides, and I barely finished the meat. My only problem is the checkout process. There's a prompt for a tip at the end. It's located in the Moanalua Shopping Center across the parking lot from McDonald's which sits on Valkenburgh St. Plenty of parking by the way, although it was a little congested due to the lunch hour. Must be the same owner(s) as Teddy's Burgers, because our drink cup had their logo as well as Tex 808's. The restaurant was well-lit and appeared clean. Country music was playing overhead at a comfortable level. We were promptly greeted as we approached the order line. We checked out the large menu on the wall and made our choices with some help from the very courteous staff. Headed to the end of the order line and paid at the register. Less than a minute after my receipt printed out, all of our items were on the tray, and we headed to an inside table. I had the Brisket sandwich, which was topped with coleslaw and BBQ sauce on a toasted bun. The brisket and slaw were overflowing out the sides and it tasted good. My side was the mac 'n' cheese, which had a great balance of flavor and creaminess. I've had some mac 'n' cheese offerings that were either too dry and salty or soupy. This one was spot on. My wife had the 3 street tacos and was able to order a mix of the pulled pork and brisket. They looked on the small side, but she wasn't disappointed and could only finish 2 of them. Her side was the tater salad, which is their spin on a potato salad. Washed it all down with sweet tea, which did not disappoint. Having lived in the South for a couple of decades, I know my sweet tea. The only thing that could have made it better was crushed ice instead of cubed. My mom doesn't make banana pudding. But if she did, their banana pudding would be better! For our order, it came out to less than $50 which seems pricey for a meal for 2. Really love the vibe this place brings. The St. Louis style ribs is by far their best dish. Tender, moist and flavorful, can stack up well vs most BBQ joints. The corn on the cob is perfect, not soggy or overly seasoned. Sorry the rest isn't so great. The prices are a bit on the high side, even for today's high inflation environment. For example, it's $29 for a full rack of ribs. A 3 meat plate with sides will be around $25, will take a little hit on your wallet. Feel like my blinds are being stolen every 3 rounds of the cycle. The potato salad was strange, with dill and pickles. Way too sour and a bit unpleasant. Because don't like to waste, it's close to not edible and that's saying a lot. Less pickles and more dill maybe can see it working. The pulled pork was too dry, didn't have much of a smoky flavor or actually much a flavor at all. Maybe comparing this to other places on the mainland and it's a bit harsh. The beef brisket was ok not exceptional.
