I like the food here and the options, but I ordered 2 sandwiches for pick up at 4:30. Spent just under $50 after tip and even though it was supposed to be ready at 4:53 its now 5:30 and were still waiting in the parking lot for our food. Keep being told a few more minutes. IT'S OVER FOR HUGO'S For 20 years I have gone to Hugo's, I loved it so much I left a five star review in 2015 but everything has a season. Currently in the last two years the service at hugo's, specifically take out, has been well below atrocious. 60 to 70 percent of our take out orders are wrong, but it was things like they forgot the sides, or forgot the avocado, minor screw ups but damn were they consistent. Over the last two years it's gotten progressively worse. Tonight it wasn't just off, they gave us a completely wrong order, Which means someone else got a 100% wrong order. I had had it, as expensive as hugo's is you don't get to f-up 65% of the time. Premium price denotes premium service, not to the Hugo's crew. They were once great, they are now just another fading eatery, I've eaten there once or twice a week for 20 years. Tonight when I called to complain I GOT THE ENTIRELY WRONG ORDER... and the manager was mad at ME? Premium price, dollar store service. Done forever. Whether it's the Carbonara, Pan Roasted Salmon, Mary's Chicken, Pasta Victor, Desayuno Fuerte, Chipotle Scramble, Cinnamon Swirl French Toast - you can't go wrong! And we LOVE that when we order Buttermilk Pancakes (with blueberries) we can request REAL maple syrup and actually have brought to our table. We were in the area working on our taxes and stopped in for a bite. The dining room was packed during the lunch rush so we sat on the patio. It was a little chilly out, but the heat lamps were on. I ordered the rueben and vegan sticky bun. The boyfriend ordered the veggie burger and added custom options. I criticized his boring choice, but he insisted that he was in the mood for a burger. We split everything and props to him because it was an amazing tasting veggie burger. The grilled onions and dollop of guac were solid choices. He also went with ciabatta bread- another wise decision. His side was French fries that were hand cut, fried and seasoned to perfection. My rueben's meat substitute had great texture and the sauerkraut added a briny tang. The house made bread was soft and satisfying and I enjoyed every bite. Another house made touch was the Russian dressing. The sticky bun reminded me of the texture of a churro. The sticky glaze was finger-lickingly delicious. Made a reservation, as it was Sunday at noon. This is an expected time for a restaurant to be busy, however, after being seated right in the front, in plain view of the check-in desk, to-go table and the kitchen, it took nearly 25 minutes for anyone to even acknowledge our party of 2. All manner of restaurant staff, including what would be our waiter, came in and out of the front door, passing our empty table (no plates, beverages, nothing) and not a single person came over to say so much as "sorry, it's kind of busy, I will be right with you"). I got up not once, not twice, but 3 times to ask if anyone had any desire to offer us service. The second time I approached what looked like the manager who said he would take care of it right away, and then proceeded to completely ignore my request. I have worked many a year in the restaurant business and do appreciate that a crowded dining room can be overwhelming, but everyone failed. It seems to be Hugo's policy to seat someone and aggressively ignore them, either hoping they would leave or counting on the fact it was now nearly 1pm on a summer Sunday and we were 'trapped' into staying until they could finally be bothered to attend to our meal. The food was very good, so there was something to redeem the day. They didn't offer so much as a dessert or to cover our beverages to attempt to actually care. As someone with restrictive food allergies I can honestly say this place is incredible. I am gluten free and dairy free and often that means paying a fortune for restaurants to leave ingredients out of my food. I'm often disappointed with the flavor and I often get gluten cross contamination which causes me to have allergic reactions. Hugo's is the best, most delicious allergy friendly food I've had in LA. They also have vegan and vegetarian options as well as "normal" food. I can't recommend them enough. My boyfriend is lactose intolerant and we were both able to eat an amazing pancake, French toast, churro, and sticky bun breakfast without getting sick 10/10! read more

However, make sure you DOUBLE CHECK your order if you do "Take Away" Ordered a turkey burger, with grilled mushrooms, cheese, and vegetarian bacon as 'add-ons', on their gluten free flat bread. And vegan Mac & cheese. Now the burger itself was fine. However, there was NO lettuce, or tomatoes which is standard. They did not put on mushrooms, that I ordered extra. Just had a disappointing lunch here. I ordered eggs Benedict with the potato pancake option. The eggs were almost hard. When I pointed it out to the waiter and he said that this was their default option and if I wanted them runny you have to ask. Said I, you could have told me that when she ordered. He offered to take it back but we had waited so long to be served that I was too hungry to wait. The potato pancake wasn't crisp and was flavorless. French fries were limp. Hugo's on Riverside Drive, Sherman Oaks/Studio City is just like his big brother on SanMo Boulevard, over the hill in WeHo, but smaller, with faster-but-slightly-less friendly service, and more families dining there on a weeknight than there are single people cruising for a hook up. It's also less flaming gay. More like, smoking gay, or a hint of gay. -- Touch of gay? Anyway... Take that as a good or bad thing, dear. -- Warning: your opinion might change after a glass or two of wine. Food selection is good, though no single thing is all that spectacular. There are lots of vegan options and low-salt, low-sugar choices if you and your dinner companions are elderly, Gwyneth Paltrow-y, or aren't fans of grease. Did I mention this place is cozy? Prepare to literally rub elbows with your neighbor. There are ceiling-support columns that inadvertantly make the room seem smaller, like a badly designed porn cruise ship. You can look right into the kitchen, too! It's like being at El Pollo Loco, when you're looking at them cook chicken, except at Hugo's they're cobbling your cobb salad, or icing your tea, or fruiting your parfait. The patio is nice in the summer, but the mosquitoes love white wine even if it's paired with red meat, so get hammered fast. Speaking of wine, this Hugo's loves to decorate its tables with random bottles of alcohol (you only pay if they uncork them and you consume the contents), further crowding you. It's not all that bad -- you're not supposed to put your elbows on the table, anyway. Though, sometimes it does get annoying when people at other tables use their Staples Center voices in a place the size of a South Korean prison cell. (Don't ask). Prices are a bit steep for what amounts to a casual eatery -- expect to drop $50 for lunch or dinner if you both down a glass of merlot with it. This is the second time we've ordered a holiday meal from Hugo's. And once again the food was outstanding. We got the Portobello Feast for our Christmas dinner. We have a couple of vegetarians in the family and so while we do have turkey on Thanksgiving our Christmas meal is always vegetarian. The Portobello Feast is vegan and all the dishes included in the Feast taste great. Picked up the food on Christmas Eve and followed the simple reheating instructions and had dinner ready to go in about half an hour. Love Hugo's! read more

2.5 I really feel like the bad guy bursting the Hugo's right on its a great breakfast spot, vegetarian cool spot, yuppie Mexican food right on vibe... BUT after paying $29 not including tax or tip for my breakfast, by my breakfast I mean me myself and I ALONE, I feel like any positives are outweighed by the massive bill. I love breakfast I would pay $100 for 2 for a gourmet breakfast, no prob. 1 scramble- no sides 1 side of bacon 1, I mean 1, blueberry pancake 1 iced tea Scramble fresh, nothing spectacular. I had one of the best breakfasts ever here last week. Simple and heathy. It was their version of granola and it rocked!!! Lot fat yogurt with bananas and berries and this crunch mix filled with nuts, grains and other goodies. I could have bought bags of it to take home. Then I ordered a vegan flatbread that truly was unreal. A bit of butter and it became toast like I've never had. Again, crispy and perfectly cooked. My friend had a spinach frittata that looked very good as well. And the pancakes that walked by were amazing!! Good parking at a private lot and the service was quick, friendly and on point. Finally tried Hugo's. I've lived in the neighborhood for nearly a decade and drive by this place once, twice perhaps even three times daily and have never dined here. I often give people directions to the place since its around the corner from me but finally tried them for lunch. A friend of mine told me what a wide variety menu they have - including vegetarian, vegan and gluten free options. I was happy to try them but found the large menu to be somewhat overwhelming. I had the toughest time trying to figure out what I'd have and then opted for the Avocado Hummus Wrap - spinach tortilla wrapped around avocado, tomato, cucumber, hemp hummus & sunflower sprouts with a drizzle of sesame-ginger dressing. I wasn't very hungry and was looking for a smaller portion meal so I only ate half. It was good but I found myself eating most of the other entree on the table :) Asian Stir Fry - marinated organic tofu, snow peas, fresh tomatoes, broccolini, mushrooms, jicama, green onions, cilantro and a mild sesame-chili sauce served atop a bed of quinoa. This dish was really good! The portions are pretty large, you can very easily share a meal or take half home for later. I'm not in any hurry to return but glad I finally tried them. read more

Pumpkin Bread French Toast, Eggplant Parmigiana Sandwich, Hugo's Shepherd's Pie. When you read those, do you think they'd be vegan? Probably not, but yes indeed all three are either vegan as is at Hugo's or can be made so. I'm not even really sure where to begin with Hugo's, it's kind of amazing. I'm still confused as to how a restaurant with such an extensive variety of food managed to squeeze vegan options into every corner of their menu. It's fantastic to see a place that takes vegetarians and vegans to the heart of their business, it's obvious in combing their menu that they've really put in an effort here. They very clearly mark items that are vegan or can be made as such, makes my dining so easy. I was pretty much blown away the first time I visited. I had a breakfast dish that was comprised of two potato pancakes creating a sandwich with tomato and vegan cheese (Daiya) in-between, it was insane. If you're a tea drinker you need to come here too, the list is wonderful, full of organic selections across the spectrum. Green teas, black, white, herbal, oolong, pu erh... they have it all. If you're not one for tea I say rock the lemonade, I snagged the ginger basil lemonade and I almost peed myself it was so good. "Refreshing" doesn't really do it justice. Major salute to the ownership of Hugo's for calling out their reasoning for vegetarian/vegan leaning fair at Hugo's. They point blank tell you on their menu that they're making an effort towards more fully plant based options; it's better for you and it's better for the planet. It's true that environmentalism goes hand in hand with vegetarianism, and kudos to Hugo's for highlighting that cause. Yes they have meat for those of you that simply can't seem to live without some animal on your plate, but if you are thinking about investigating the world of vegetable based foods Hugo's is here to give you top notch samples of the vege world. Check out the menu, you'll find everything from a meat-standard eggs and bacon or chicken sausage all the way through the vegan Kelp Noodle Salad, and plenty of items in between to ease your way towards giving the vegetarian world a shot. Word to the wise, on weekends this place is PACKED. Their unique menu approach seems to be doing something right because the crowd spills out into the parking lot waiting for a table during key times, and now that I've jumped into the food at Hugo's I can totally see why. For medical reasons I have been trying to adapt to a new way of eating. We live right around the corner from this location and have never stopped by because I assumed it was ony vegetarian friendly and I love me some meat. Well fast forward to this month, no more meat, no more gluten. It's ok really, just learning a new way of eating and luckily Hugo's is making it so much easier. I decided it was time to try Hugo's because while I might be choosing to not eat meat, my boyfriend needs his steak :-) I showed him the menu and headed out for an early Saturday dinner. He was happy because they had beer, I was happy because they had tofu tacos! We actually both ended up getting the tacos dinner, he chose steak and said they were fantastic. The guacamole made that little stuffed taco so creamy (hmm that sentence sounds a little dirty). The plates were huge and very filling. The crispy cesar salad had a nice tangy dressing. New Year's Day....a group of friends were laying around a Toluca Lake apartment brainstorming about where to go for brunch. Enter Yelp! After consulting with a handy dandy Yelp search for "brunch" and checking the Hugo's menu we had ourselves a winner. We went down to Hugo's and after a short 10 minute wait the hostess called us in. I was surprised that Hugo's was so busy. I wonder if it's always that crowded or if it was a New Year's Day phenomenon. My friends were a bit apprehensive about what the food would be like since this place is mostly organic, hormone free, and very vegan and vegetarian friendly. We were anticipating some bland granola grass cardboard tasting dishes. It didn't help the situation much when they realized the crowd was mostly white, yuppie, hipster..... However once we got the menu we were smitten and then when we realized we were surrounded by hottie mchottersons we were SOLD! The menu at Hugo's was so vast featuring breakfast foods, salads, sandwiches, pastas, burgers, mexican dishes etc etc that there was literally something for everyone and we were all satisfied with our picks. I've sampled the fried calamari, the ginger lemonade, the pumpkin pancakes, the potato pancakes, french fries, the very green risoto with herbed goat cheese, and the burger. The santa fe chipotle vegan mayo on the burger was very tasty. (don't say I didn't warn you, sides or ranch cost extra) Hugo's is easily one of my favorite places to dine now. It'll be seeing us pretty often because we still haven't tried the Gluten Free Red Velvet Pancakes and the Mac and Cheese. I love this restaurant SO much. As a person with dietary restrictions, it provides options I can't find anywhere else that are tasty & diverse. The servers are lovely. It's one of my favorite places in LA. They've been thoughtful and adaptive throughout the pandemic, and sought to support the community and other small businesses. BUT, since the beginning of the pandemic, there has been something wrong or missing with EVERY single one of my takeout or pantry orders, whether a missing sauce, an absent pineapple or 2 potato pancakes when it should have been 12, and it's such a disappointment because it's usually not worth trying to rectify when you just want to eat the brunch you've already gotten home before it gets cold. I was even promised a gift certificate for my troubles when I reached out to share my feedback last summer, and it never materialized. I wanted to have faith that they could execute my order today, and took a chance only to be disappointed again. Hugo's is great for dine-in. They need better quality control for pick-up, delivery & pantry orders. They're not particularly cheap either, so it's especially disappointing when what is supposed to be a splurge or a treat doesn't come to fruition. read more

I can't believe in all my time living in Encino, I haven't been to Hugo's until tonight. From parking, ambiance, service, to food--everything was on point!! I love how they do conscious cooking to appease palates of carnivores, herbivores, and those with allergens. As a vegetarian and a foodie, I wanted something different from what I usually order at other vegetarian/vegan restaurants. So I ordered the vegetarian version of Chicken CARCIOFI. I got the veggie patty instead of the seasoned chicken breast. The dish is sautéed in olive oil with artichoke hearts, spinach, cherry tomatoes, garlic, Kalamata olives, chili flakes, lemon juice, white wine and butter. Its served with organic brown rice. It was soooo goood!!!!! The veggie patty drenched in that slurp-worthy white wine and butter sauce was reminiscent of a Hawaiian loco moco but much healthier and tastier!! Yumm!! I'll definitely come back for this one. My husband and I came on a Friday night and the place was packed. But that did not affect the service. Our waitress Sara was friendly and attentive. Even for the place being packed my husband and I weren't yelling and straining to hear each other like at other noisy restaurants. They have a parking lot next to the restaurant and they are located very near the 101-it was all very convenient! It was a wonderful, stress-free date night!! I was so disappointed by the food here, especially after reading plenty of reviews raving about their vegetarian options. I wanted the strawberry lemonade but apparently there's no refills so I opted for an arnold palmer instead. Super tart, needed about 4 splendas to make it drinkable. The BF got an overpriced smoothie - I forget the name but it had mangos and almonds, I had a sip and it was not tasty. Unless you freaking LOVE almonds and the taste of almond puree, don't order it. The almond flavor was overwhelming and no sweetness from the fruits can be detected. Veggie spring rolls to start - tasted fresh but the sprouts that were used were so tough! I wasn't even able to bite through them all the way, I ended up pulling out all the sprouts every time I tried to take a bite and the whole roll fall apart on me. The dipping sauce was super salty, maybe to make up for the blandness of the roll? There are so many choices on the menu, we couldn't figure out what to get! Usually when we are eating at a veggie/vegan friendly place terms like "never ever" or "nearly chicken" means that it is a non meat product. There was a "never ever" pork chop dish that sounded appealing but thank goodness we asked our waitress for clarification who confirmed that it is, in fact pork, Why call it "never ever" pork? Just makes it confusing. I finally settled on a create your own plate meal. I got the white bean soup, plantains, green tamale with a side of red pepper hummus. The soup and plantains were so incredibly bland I couldn't get through my bowl without adding salt and pepper. I don't know what was going on in the kitchen with half our food coming out super salty and the other half missing even an pinch of salt. The green tamale not only looked sad, it was also dry and flavorless. My hummus had a very weird "zing-y" taste to it, and I'm sorry but I don't know how else to describe it except that it tasted the way my store bought hummus tastes when it goes bad. I left that hummus alone after that! The only reason this place is getting a two and not a one is because the service was the one part of the dining experience that didn't suck. read more

Power of Greens Salad. My new favorite. Green, green, green. Healthy and hearty. With the sherry vinaigrette dressing on the side. I had to take half of it home and it was just as good the next day. I am so glad my friend suggested Hugo's for lunch. I hadn't been in awhile but I understand why it's so popular. Here's the deal. We've lived up the street from Hugo's for almost three years, and for whatever reason it's never been at the top of our let's-eat-out list. But things have changed! Perfectly understated but dozens of diverse menu options (literally several thousand options if you include the permutations of make-your-own-pasta and sandwiches), with many vegan/vegetarian/just flat out healthy and wholesome eating options. This meal will be the first of many! My veggie burger was an exceptionally generous, savory, from-scratch patty - very refreshing to have something other than a re-heated Gardenburger pulled out of the fridge. And my husband's pasta was also top-notch in terms of the freshness of the noodles - very hearty and substantial; not sure what "real" Italian pasta is like in terms of taste and texture, but if I had to guess, it'd be just like Hugo's. THE BEST creamy four-cheese mac 'n' cheese ever as well; even the appetizer-sized portion is enough for a meal. Glass of wine and cup of tea were also A+. Unusually large hot loose leaf tea selection; good job guys. One star docked for ambiance - I think it could've used some background music at least - and the price is not exactly easy on the wallet, although it is much more bearable when you're treated with top-notch quality and tastiness! On a side note - man sitting across from us profusely and profanely vented non-stop to his daughter (significant other?) about an intolerable co-worker from the moment he sat down. She has loved and raved about this location for quite some time but the last time we went the wait was to long =/ Yesterday we were out a CSU Northridge watching Little Bit (my daughter) at a track meet and decided to get some breakfast here... since I recently returned from Oaxaca, Mexico and apparently can not eat a single meal without a alcoholic beverage *hiccup* I ordered a Mimosa right off the BAT!! LOL ahhh refreshing - served as a split with a small carafe of Orange Juice. Monica had the pumpkin pancakes with a side of scrambled eggs, I ordered the Eggs Benedict duh OF FLIPPIN COURSE!! :) with a side of 1 pineapple-coconut, toasted almond pancake served with a Coconut Agave syrup. My meal was delicious it also had breakfast potatoes which were seasoned just right but some of the wedges had been cooked to long. Overall a tasty meal. Our wait was about 10 minutes (plenty of time for you to take a look at the menu and decide what you'll order) tight seating, nice interior, parking lot can be filled up especially on the early Saturday or Sunday mornings. Somewhat of a late dinner at Hugos after doing some Halloween festivities in the area. First, the place is really popular. And popular also means a full parking lot. I told all my friends "Don't worry they have their own lot", but when we get there its totally full. I did manage to find street parking just down Riverside near the market. Then I had made reservations for six people, but we had extra people join us after our event. So when I got there I told them right away that it was really going to be 8 people. They had already setup our table, but I told them we were willing to wait for a larger table. The hosts were very understanding and accommodating, and they arranged a new table for us towards the back. The food is really good. I got their Mustard Chicken, which is supposed to be one of their most popular dishes. It was good, but not very mustardy at all - more sweet with a slight touch of mustard. One of my friends loved her food so much, she said she was thinking of coming back the very next day for breakfast. It is that good ! read more

Like my dining companion said, "It was good, but I wouldn't go out of my way to come here." Couldn't have said it better myself. Now I love me some brunch. When I saw some food pics from this place, I was super excited to try it. I've been DYING for a place like Rudy's Can't Fail back in the Bay, diner feel and all. Hugo's definitely seemed to fit the bill. The menu is really extensive, which is great when you're looking for both vegan and non-vegan options. There was a long wait, which we took to mean that the food was great...but alas, I'm beginning to think I'll never find a good vegan brunch spot in LA. The food was good, I just wasn't wowed by it. I ordered close to the same breakfast I had at Prasad in Portland - fried plantains, black bean cakes, sweet potatoes and a cilantro chutney. The server and a fellow diner both recommended the black bean cakes, so I was expecting something special. But honestly? This is so similar to a dish I make at home, when I pan fry sweet rice. Very simple. The rest of the meal was okay, only highlighted by the flavorful chutney. My house made chai was also a little lacking in the spice department. You could say that this place was highly hyped for me, but I wasn't the only one not impressed. I wouldn't be against coming here, but I doubt I'd be back anytime soon, especially when I can get a better brunch at Whole Foods for half the price. Great brunch spot! I enjoyed the green tamales and eggs very much, and they seem to have a lot of vegetarian options to try. For $13, they give you a small split of sparkling wine, so you can make your own mimosas...a much better deal than paying $13 for a single mimosa elsewhere. Even on Sunday at peak brunch time (11am), we were able to be seated quickly without a wait, and although the restaurant was very busy, service was quick. Would definitely return! read more

love their pasta carbonara with vegan bacon and their salmo piccata dish with pasta also the veggie pot pie with a veggie patty and their homemade sauces chipotle honey glaze and endless sauce addition to their cute single mini serve champaign bottles to make a fresh mimosa are always nice and lots of gluten free options:) read more
