I went here the other night on a whim and it was great. A pretty typical American Chinese food restaurant. Very nice decor, again pretty typical, you can imagine what it looks like, think Seinfeld. The food was good, family style, no complaints. They have "special time" from 5 - 7 with discount prices and served with soup and an egg roll (delciouls and perfectly crispy). If you like spicy things and order a spicy dish, I recommend asking for some extra spice. I did not and my meal was a bit mild for me. Good place, good menu, had an overall pleasant experience. I would go back to try some of the other items. Good spot if you want some typical Chinese food. read more

Went there Friday for lunch. The new owners have made the place look nice. Unfortunately, the food was a disappointment. Not only are my favorite dishes no longer on the menu (e.g. Singapore rice noodles) but also my my was greasy and not particularly flavorful. This place is garbage. We ordered the beef brocolli (beef was slimy and gross) and the chow menu (came with no noodles and 2 pieces of chicken) and we ordered the egg drop soup and it was slimey and had such gross flavor and texture. Horrible service. read more

We have been coming here for decades - back in the 1980's it was a very happening place, but fell on hard times in the 90's and 00's. Rebooted with new owners, 2014 sees Hunan Lion to be a lively and well-trafficked spot for good, reasonably-priced Chinese food. Recommend the pork fried rice and sesame tofu. Good for a family dinner - we were able to feed a group of 6 hungry diners for about $60. read more

I like this Chinese place. Notice I said LIKE, not LOVE. I still have not found an Austin successor to Chef Jia's in San Francisco. Austin is simply not an Asian food town, I have discovered to my great despair. So I make do. My ex-husband and I used to come here in the 90s for the sesame chicken, which was EXCELLENT -- the perfect blend of crispy and spicy. I ordered it again after I moved back to ATX after a 15 year absence, and apparently, the place is under different ownership. It was alright, but not worth repeating. However, they have a great lunch and dinner special. I live in the neighbourhood, so it's nice to bop down and get an early dinner for less than $10 (with tea). And they give me enough food that I have leftovers for a second meal. I usually order the Moo Goo Gai Pan, because I like a lot of veggies. It's pretty good, as are the wonton and hot and sour soups. Recently tried the Kung Pao Chicken, and it was fine but I would have liked some veggies in it, not just chicken and peanuts. I've always had good service, and the food is dependable enough that coupled with the convenient location and good prices, I'll come back until I find something better. But I'm sad they don't have that amazing sesame chicken anymore ;( read more

This place has great food!! I ordered and had it delivered. I got crab puffs, veggie egg roll, and salt and pepper chicken. It was sooo tasty. I'm editing my review after eating the hunan lion several more times and having tried several other chinese places. I will never go anywhere else. This place was ridiculous!! They gave me cold food that I could not eat and when I sent it back to "warm it up" and I told them I didnt want that, they acted like I was just trying to run some kind of scam. I told them I will pay for all the food I ate but no more. Then the woman tried to write down my DL #! I am not a cheap scape!. I would have been happy to pay for the food but once I bit in to frozen mushrooms, I was done. DON'T RECOMMEND AND WILL NEVER GO BACK!! Oliva the manager was completely disrespectful and argued with me, Aidey the kitchen manager was the same, he showed me that the pork was fresh, but couldn't show me the fresh mushrooms that I said were cold, because he knew that they were frozen! I order takeout / delivery here about twice a month. Often the order is wrong when I use delivery (usually I'm just missing my side of fried rice or soup), so I tend to stick to take out. Otherwise the food quality is what you'd expect of a takeout place. read more

I ordered online from this place and the first thing I noticed was the price! Not bad at all.. so I ended up ordering a ton of food because why not the price is right. You can choose a pick up time which I thought was convenient. I thought the food was so good! You can really tell everything is hand made and home made. Our experience was not great. First, the Alamos Malbec smelled like vinegar. Gave it back and just had water. The deep fried chicken with water chestnuts might have been good if it had water chestnuts. The brown sauce was on the side but I would have preferred not to have seen a fruit fly that was carried out with it on the rim. The other dish was good with the veggies. Strangely as well was the fact that with only 3 tables to serve we were only asked once if we needed anything and that was by the time we wanted the check. For some reason that took a long time so I had to bring the check and card to the cashier. Is it possible they had people write some reviews for them here? I don't know. Don't come here for lunch unless you have a lot of time. I was seated promptly but waited close to ten minutes before any wait staff came by. I ordered the salt and pepper shrimp off the chefs special section. It was OK but not worth the $11.50 price tag. Overall it is OK for Chinese food. Didn't matter as I called them directly to ask to make sure there were fortune cookies and the man who answered told me it would be ready in 10 minutes. I'm very disappointed and dissatisfied with this restaurant. I ordered chicken chow mein lunch special through door dash and it was completely wrong. First there was no noodles in my chow mein. Secondly it was VERY bland! I couldn't even eat the meal as it tasted like nothing. Third it did not come with the egg roll or soup as it said it would. Best Chinese food place in Austin by far! There are other places near by and none compare. Their price point is perfectly affordable, their portions are more than enough, and you usually get soup, a egg roll and some crab puffs with your order INCLUDED! I've gone to a Thai restaurant where they charged me $5.00 just for two cigar sized crab and cream cheese puffs. The staff is friendly and super quick. Management refused to send someone out with the remainder of my order unless I agreed to pay a 2nd delivery charge. The food was as delicious as ever however, this is not a good way to do business. I was very disappointed with the food. I have eaten here prior to the pandemic and the food was so delicious NOW pick up the food is not satisfactory. Yesterday I order over 4 dishes and paid $62.24 with a tip when my mother picked up the food I ordered. Pan fried dumplings disgusting soggy. Eggs roll greasy. Fried flounder no season just fried green beans onions and fish! Chicken Lovers General Tso/lemon sauce to sweet no spice. I will never waste my money with this restaurant again. My husband wanted me to bring the food back. I didn't want to waste my time trying to explain why I want a full refund. Been going here for years. The food is always fresh and tasty. Family owned restaurant and they are very sweet and kind people.
