Pretty good food, but lunchtime is so difficult. There's one server for lunch, and the hostess looks confused (and is wearing flip flops throughout the restaurant). You have to specifically request no MSG in your food, but once that's over it's actually pretty tasty. For delivery, it's a good choice. read more

The wait for a table and the wait to receive our food was long--they seemed quite understaffed for the busy Christmas night rush. But our firecracker shrimp, roast duck and spicy beef were all solid. The only thing "Hunan" about this place is the name - the food is low-grade American Chinese now. I think the old owner sold this place a few months ago. The new owners try hard but the food is *very* disappointing. My Kung Pao chicken had a glutenous 'brown' sauce with more celery than should be allowed even by Cantonese chefs. The egg rolls weren't bad. Service is efficient. Hope they can 'upgrade' the cook here - not sure I'll be back unless it is for a 'el cheapo' lunch special. read more

One of the best Chinese restaurants in south austin, good luncheon deals. Delicious egg drop soup, strongly recommended, must try. I like their Szechuan Sauce. I am not one to care for chinese food unless its quality. I have lived in South Austin for 12 years and the food is crap.I roll my eyes every time my husband says lets get chinese takeout. Until I discovered Chinatown purchased Hunan Lion just yesterday.I ordered delivery and think the food is better than ever. I've been going on dates with my husband since the age of 15 here. We are talking 15 years of memories with this staff and it's cuisine.Today I got a surprise when Eddie himself delivered the food. We greeted each other with a hug. I am forever loyal to him, his staff and chefs. I can't wait to tell everybody. He shuts it down with the Honey Chicken or the Mongolian Beef. Our favorite of all time. read more

As Natalie mentioned in the previous review Chinatown from Westlake is back, but at Hunan Lion! My boyfriend and his family were religious Chinatown customers. When we found out that Chinatown closed down we were all devastated. It felt like we lost a family member. Well now we have our favorite Austin Chinese restaurant back! The dishes are identical to Chinatown Westlake! I love their sesame chicken! I do not know how the food was at Hunan Lion before the Chinatown staff moved in but this place is AMAZING now! read more

I went for lunch during the week, and I was extremely happy to see their menu. Being vegetarian, I hate asking for tofu substitutions, especially for General Tso. It's not a problem - they let you pick your sauce - Genereal, Sweet/Sour, etc, and your 'meat'. It was the second best General Tso I've ever had. Egg drop soup was great too. read more

Pardon my pop culture reference but this is your all around "basic bitch" Chinese food place. It's just generic Americanized Chinese food. It's always fresh, hot, delicious, and full of msg. The standouts are the salt and pepper calamari and your basic favorites like sesame chicken, General tso, Egg rolls, wonton and egg drop soup. The service is really good here! Waters always full and waiters bring your food out as soon as it's ready, which is good because nobody likes Chinese food that has been sitting for awhile. They do a lot of takeout orders here but I prefer to eat in because the place is clean and comfortable and the food is so much better right outta the kitchen. read more

Good Chinese food! This review is based on delivery only. Hunan Lion is under new management, thank God! We've ordered delivery quite a few times and have been satisfied! The general tso's chicken has crispy white pieces of meat. Crab rangoons are perfectly fried and filled with just the right amount of savory cream cheese. Hot and sour soup is has just the right amount of spice. So far every meal has shown up hot, fresh and each delivery person is friendly! Worth trying since there aren't many (if any) other good Chinese places in the area! read more

OMG.... This was THE WORST Chinese food I EEEVVVEEEER HAD!!!! I came here from a review of an Asian person saying that the twice cooked pork was just like home. Uh.... then it was hella greasy and dry! I knew it was a warning when I came in and there were forks on the table. Had to ask for chopsticks. My friend ordered chow mein. When it arrived I stared at it. It was like Chung King chow mein! A bunch of gravy, cabbage and little bit of chicken and a side of fried sliced up wonton skins. Hardly any bean sprouts. I didn't know people actually still ate it that way - back in the 70's when people didn't know what real Chinese food was. Even in the Bay Area the "Americanized Chinese" restaurants serve it with noodle. Wonton soup. It's a cup. You can't order a bowl. Had broth and two wontons. No veggies, no green onion, nada. The skin on the wonton was thiiiick! OMG! I can't believe the food I saw or ate! This food was soooo bad that it pissed me off for the rest of the day! Heck! Panda Express is considered gourmet compared to this place!! They have noodles in their chow mein! read more

Delicious and fast. Customer service has always been great here - they're friendly and don't give you a lot of hassle if you need to make substitutions due to dietary restrictions. The flounder in garlic sauce is always fresh tasting, light and fluffy with a nice white wine flavor coming through on the sauce. Quite possibly the best Chinese food I've ever had! Randomly went for lunch one day and had the sweetest waitress, I wish I could recall her name, but she remembered ours and said bye to us on the way out. So nice! One reason I enjoy coming to Hunan Lion is the staff. I've always been greeted warmly when I come in, with a genuine smile that makes me feel like they truly appreciate their customers. The decor is understated, but nice. Comfortable. Hunan Lion has a very relaxing, quiet ambiance. Their menu has the "usual" assortment of Chinese restaurant fare, as well as several items that are a little more unusual. There's also a note in the front of the menu that they will try to accommodate if you'd like to order something that isn't listed on the menu. Last night, I had the spicy Hunan Beef....yum! The beef was fork tender, the vegetables were fresh and not overcooked, and the spicy brown sauce was flavorful without being overpowering. I'm eating the leftovers for lunch right now (their portions are *huge*!), and its just as tasty today. read more

Okay, I'm giving Hunan a high rating for several reasons, one being that it is so hard to find really good, decent Chinese in Austin, second it is just excellent neighborhood food....finally! We ordered some pretty basic dishes, especially with kids and just to make sure they had the abc's down and they did! Combo fried rice, large pieces of sliced pork, tender (not dried out) chicken, plump shrimp, yummy, yummy, and a ton of it...bonus! Plus they cook the rice, then let it dry and then stir fry. This makes the rices texture, just right! (Not like the majority of restaurants, that steam the rice and then throw it in the wok, making it soft and mushy) Chicken moo shu, excellent. Again tender juicy chicken, and large thick slices of mushrooms, yeah! Some sort of spicy meat dumplings, not spicy, although they came with a rich peanutty sauce and delicious filling. Batter fried shrimp, nice size and NOT over cooked. Now that the basic principals are here, we are ready for more...I'm sooooo happy I gave them another try from years ago thanks to another yelper explaining the management change. This place is great. Lets be honest though, most Chinese restaurants in the suburbs of the world are no pinnacle of fresh organic cuisine. We all know what we're getting. That said, Hunan lion is fine. Its better than fine even. I have never been grossed out here once and now ive been dozens of times. We all know what I'm talking about. Not the case with this place. The meat quality at least from a taste perspective is decent, the soups are hot and the staff are polite and attentive without being intrusive. One of the main reasons i go here though, is the ambience, which has that classic 20th century Chinese restaurant-feel (aside from the annoying tv which thankfully is tucked around a corner where you can't see it in most of the restaurant.) The walls are dark wood color with little touches of lucky red and gold decoration. Wooden Buddhas and folk statues are present by the door, and of course there's an aquarium. I get a lot of inspiration here actually and it can even be a nice place to hang out and read with the staff continuing to refill the hot tea pot even after you've paid. For economical Chinese food, this is my spot in south Austin. read more

I was recently introduced to Singapore noodles and found some great ones here at Hunan Lion. I leave out the meat and egg and add tofu and it's delicious!. we also love their veggie pot stickers. My mom had the crab puffs which were flat and chewy. not good. Maybe it was because we had delivery on a sunday night? The people are always really friendly and say hi to my little one. read more

Unfortunately, I live a bit too far away from Hunan Lion for takeout. Fortunately, for a Chinese restaurant, this place has a decent dining area. I have dined here on multiple evenings, and have to say that it's the 'finest' Chinese atmosphere (save PF Changs) that I have experienced in Austin. The service has not been great, however. The serving staff tend to rush you (maybe that's their way of trying to be attentive) during what appears to be a completely dead night. I'd understand if the joint was trying to turn tables (maybe it was boredom of lack of patrons). Anyhow, on to the food. The dumplings are really great here. My husband likes pork and I like veggie, which tends to lead to either a compromise or a fight when ordering at most places. Hunan let us get them half and half (yay!) and so they saved the trouble. The soups were good, but nothing spectacular. Entrees were all very good but typical. I did notice that there were a few options that were not so typical and I chose not to try them. If you are more adventurous it might be worthwhile to try it out. If you do, let me know how it was so I can feel safer ordering it! read more
