Caveat-- I am a vegetarian. I had not eaten here is 15 years, no real reason just sort of forgot about the place. It's ambience could use some help but the service was super friendly and attentive and the food was great. I had tofu in orange sauce, veggie dumplings and veggie egg roll. All were very tasty. Their lunch special is a steal. It includes the main dish, fried or steamed rice, an egg roll, soup and a cream cheese puff. I usually get the seafood delight and ask for a brown sauce. I also get the shrimp with a basil jalapeño sauce. Lunch is 7.50 or 8 typically. On the main menu, the salt & pepper shrimp is delicious. They are super nice there too. Courteous, attentive and fast. If you are in south Austin, this is a totally good spot for (mostly) Americanized Chinese food. read more

I order from Hunan Lion once a week, they always forget to bring one of my request whether it was the crispy noodles for my soup or my hot chili oil. The food is always cold but I order anyway since it is better other other restaurant in South Austin. I ordered the salt and pepper shrimp and this time it was horrible. Bathe shrimp was cold and barely cooked, the onions were raw and barely cooked which tasted awesome. I will not be ordering from here again. This place is not consistent. read more

Dinner couldn't have been any worse if I'd been in a Chinese prison. Took two people to take my order, neither spoke english basically reverted to pointing and Internet pictures. Soda had about as much fizz as canned water, water was just above bathroom urinal. Took 45 minutes to get out food, and the lo mein was well again Chinese prison seems appropriate or the stuff monkeys throw at each other at a zoo. Wouldn't go back if life depended on it. read more

Came by for a to go order of egg foo yong, it was tough as rubber and one of them had obviously been recooked which is just gross. For a 12.99 lunch entrée I expected better. They also don't have any of the gluten-free options Iike SUZIS or PFChang. You can only do white garlic sauce here nothing with gluten free soy. read more

I used to love going to Hunan Lion. But the last few times I have gone the food has be terrible. The first time I had my rice come out with my main course and it was cold and hard. I asked if I could have a fresh bowl of rice and the waitress told me she would be happy to microwave it for me, but that all of the rice was like that because the rice lid was left open. Ok, make new rice! Gesh! Second time, same thing and the food was terrible. Just found out they failed a health inspection and now I am really never going back. The report was really bad. The best Chinese food in South Austin! If your favorite dish is General Tso's, look no further. This is your new home. Personally, I have difficulty straying from the Shrimp and Walnuts (fried shrimp, candied walnuts, rice noodles, and I personally request the "sweet brown sauce"-- *DROOLING*), but everyone I've ever taken here has found something that they claim is "AMAZING". Tried Hunan Lion for the first time earlier this week. Having recently returned to Austin, I've been looking for good Chinese take out and was hopeful Hunan Lion would be my new go-to. The reviews and prices seemed decent. I ordered the dinner special with Sesame Chicken, wonton soup, steamed rice, eggroll, and a side of lo mein. Eat 24 said my order would be ready in 20 minutes so I gave them 25 before heading to the restaurant. Once there, my first red flag was the emptiness of the dining room and lack of employees. I walked to the back where I finally found someone to check on my order. As I waited, I watched the staff mill around the back, rarely venturing out to the dining room. When a family arrived, they waited in the front before finally sending someone back to ask for a waiter. After 10+ minute wait, I finally got order and left. The food itself was pretty meh. The eggroll and wonton soup were too salty (like, beyond the normal Americanized-Chinese way). The sesame chicken seemed overcooked; the chicken was very chewy. The lo mein tasted okay but it certainly wasn't enough to make up for the overall lackluster experience. read more

I live right by Hunan Lion, and I usually eat there at least once a week. Their lunch specials (every day except Sunday I believe) are a GREAT deal - around $7 for a full size entree, soup, eggroll, chicken wing, and crab puff. It usually lasts me two meals. They are very lenient with the substitutions, so if you aren't a fan of chicken wings, you can get two crab puffs instead or vice versa. For the soup, I recommend their wonton soup. It isn't anything special, but it is definitely better than the hot & sour or egg drop. (The egg drop is pretty disgusting actually). For the eggroll, be sure to ask for a vegetable eggroll. Their meat eggroll is gross. My personal favorites are the combination fried rice, pan fried noodles, and the sesame chicken. Their sesame sauce is amazing. For people who are looking for a healthier alternative, they will make your dish with steamed meat/tofu and veggies, with the sauce on the side. The best part is that you can combine any protein with any sauce. For example, my boyfriend loves to get a tofu dish with sesame sauce on the side (have I mentioned I like the sesame sauce?) One final thing - I recommend getting their food to-go. It is usually pretty empty inside and therefore, very quiet, which can make for a very awkward dinner. read more

The food is a step above food-court Chinese -- or at least my entree was, the shrimp in the Hunan Lion Shrimp were kind of flavorless and almost undercooked, the brown sauce was more sweet than spicy, but at least the peapods and mushrooms were still a little crunchy. The spicy cucumber appetizer was actually good, basically a pile of pickled spicy-sweet julienned cucumber with a couple pieces of carrot thrown in for color. But my friend got vegetable spring rolls and they were just iceberg lettuce and rice noodles wrapped in rice paper --no cucumber, no carrot, nothing else. And the only flavor the peanut sauce conveyed was sweetness. The sake was OK, but the plum wine the menu claimed was "not too sweet" tasted like the liquid from a jar of maraschino cherries. The service would have been better at a food court -- at least they'd let you eat your food in peace. Our waitress was pleasant but it was slow getting the food -- brown rice came out about 5 minutes after the entrees -- and after that they kept not-so-subtly hinting to hurry up and leave. It was really annoying to have waitstaff hovering and asking every few minutes if we wanted a box for leftovers. I know not many places are open on Christmas so there were people waiting, but we were eating at a normal pace, not lingering after we'd finished! At one point, a guy we hadn't seen before came and asked did we want boxes, and then a minute later our waitress came! To top it off, after we'd paid and were putting on our coats, the waitress came over and asked me "So, are you leaving now?" Yes, and never fear, we won't be back! read more

We get delivery from here often and its always been good. But tonight one of our dishes was not with our delivery order. I called and they said someone would deliver it soon. Our food took 20 minutes to get here the first time so you can imagine that by the 40 minute mark I was skeptical that it was ever coming. I just said whatever and decided it wasn't worth he hassle. Only only the food me satisfied me but just you see the owner Steve greeting everyone that comes to ensure they are being served accordingly. Open more than a decade and still original owner . At first I was giving them 2 stars because I had issues with placing an order for 2 days through their phone line. Until they finally answered and I was able to place my order through them. The owner is wearing every hat and is doing his best at it. He took my order (prolly cooked it) and delivered it to my door while training someone ( he was with another person) Was such a nice person, i appreciate his initiative trying to get his business up and running. Apparently he just left Chinatown restaurant and trying to make a name for himself. Props to his entrepreneurship, and if you can get an order through... it's well worth the wait. This place has been consistently good but we visited last night and oh my yum!! So, so good. The service was impeccable and the food...well it was delightful. I had the Imperial dinner to see what a Pu Pu platter is. FUN! There was more than enough to share with my dinner date. Than I had the chicken with green veggies. Perfect summer fare and so much I took some home. My dinner date had something like honey chicken and it too was delicious.
