Piping hot - even after I drove it 2 miles home. Score one for Hunan! Ordered Wonton Soup, Beef & Broccoli, Chicken Chow Fun and was pleasantly surprised to find a side order of 4 spring rolls. Nice! Looking back over other reviews and folks have been getting these for awhile - maybe I thought we were ordering them with our food previous. Minus one for me, Plus one for Hunan! Soup, B&B, CCF? Very good food, the staff was nice and I feel like they are all family which is cool. My business partner has come here a few times for their chicken chow mein and this has been his "go to" Chinese food since moving to Concord. So I figured I should give Hunan a shot, we were seated promptly they gave us free ice water and Jasmine tea which was good. So i ordered vegetarian spring rolls they were really good but not as good as my main course which was king pow chicken. This was super delicious, it had a little tang to battle with the heat. The only issue i have with this place is the decor which is very clean but very boring. Also if you want a meal that can feed you for 3 days for 8.95 this is a great place to try out. read more

This restaurant is officially the only Chinese restaurant on this street that has a lunch special. I am aware that New Lim's Garden Seafood Restaurant is on the same street but I was not impress on what was on the menu. First time trying this restaurant. I will say for a first timer it was decent. Location is reasonable. What I had for lunch was Beef with Broccoli with Fried Rice. It was good! I will say that my lunch was a good proportion. The price for a lunch special was decent. As for parking I will say it was good! Never have I had my car park underneath a big shade provided by the restaurant. As for what is on the menu it had a good selection of food. For those commenting about seeing so few customers inside, I think that's a good sign, because if they ever were to get really crowded, then the excellent service and food quality might suffer. That said, I've eaten here often, with never a bad experience, my current favorite being the Honey Sesame Chicken; really good flavor and chicken pieces of a decent size for eating. If I were to have a complaint about Hunan, it wouldn't be anything they do, it's what they don't do; NO LEMON CHICKEN, which would really round out their menu, because a GOOD lemon chicken seems to elude most Chinese restaurants. New Lim's, down the street, used to have the BEST lemon chicken, but sadly, no more, and I've not found any other restaurant offering anything comparable, so get with it, Hunan, and fill that void. read more

Love Hunan. I've eaten inside restaurant and servers and staff always nice and accommodating. They go out of their way to ensure you are happy and satisfied. I regularly go to Hunan; have been going there for years. I mostly do takeout and all my family and friends enjoy their food. They have a large menu. Plenty of parking and prices are very reasonable. Best Chinese food in the East Bay by a country mile! Used to live down the street and was in all the time, and even now it's still worth the longer drive. You know that scene in Pixar's Ratatouille where the food critic takes a bite of the titular dish and is instantly overwhelmed with warm childhood memories, Hunan's Sweet and Sour Pork did that to me! It reminded me so much of my mother's sweet and sour pork that the first time I tried it I knew I'd found my go to Chinese spot for life. The BBQ Pork Fried Rice, Lemon Chicken and Won Ton Soup are also unbelievably tasty and keep me coming back when cravings hit. I love the Shef's Special Chicken (yes! Spelt "Shef"), the sweet and spicy garlicky dipping sauce is incredible and I'll dip anything else I eat in the left over sauce (you get an ample portion of it!) for the next few days it's that good! read more

Hunan had been our go to for Chinese food for years. The food and service are excellent, they have the best spring rolls,wonton soup, honey walnut prawns, and beef with broccoli. We are always greeted with friendly and prompt service and are lucky to have them nearby. read more

My grandfather was a master chef who had a restaurant in sf and I have yet to find a Chinese restaurant that makes food like my grandfather. Great service, great portion and great price. We usually order curry chicken, wor won ton soup and dabble into other entrees like the Szechuan Chicken, Garlic Chicken, Mu Shu pork. The curry chicken is consistently our go-to. They also have a nice Mu Shu Pork. Outside of our usuals, we found that often times their entrées which contain water chestnuts are heavy on the water chestnuts, which has been apparent. Otherwise service is friendly, accurate, and consistent, and food never takes more than 15 mins if you're looking for a quick family dinner. They also have good lunch specials. read more

Ok I'm not going to lie I was skeptical about this place... I barely see anybody here? Thanks to yelp review, found a new Chinese right down the street! Yay! Came here on Tuesday evening , about 6pm, only 2 tables were seated but lots of to go orders and pick ups. Anyways, daughter and I were quickly seated. Tea water brought to us immediately. We ordered the family dinner D which comes with hot n sour soup (done the right way), honey walnut prawn, beef with string beans and house fried rice or chow mein. They even give you complimentary yummy egg roll, 1 per person. Beef and string beans were super tender and well seasoned. Beef is soooooo soft! The string beans are perfect, not over cooked. Honey walnut prawn is usually not my favorite dish but they do a good job here! Shrimp are light but wish they used bigger prawns lol they do give u a lot though House chow mein is very flavorful. Lots of noodles, not a lot of meat, barely see any chicken, but the noodle is al dente and seasoned well. Potsticker was ok nothing special to brag about. The best is the hot n sour soup. Being Chinese, and I cook. I can tell u that chili sauce should not be used in the hot n sour soup. The "hot" should come from white pepper and not chili sauce. Hunan got it right. After all it's hot and sour not chili and sour. Service was slow, they give preference to Togo orders first. Overall I will definitely be a regular. read more

So, I'm not sure how this place has managed to accumulate so many good reviews, but yeah, this place serves inedible slop and earns my first negative review. This is the second worst Chinese restaurant I have ever tried, and by far the worst in California. I should have perhaps been warned by the lack of Asian diners or anyone else under 75, but my wife and I tried the potstickers, mushu pork, eggplant with garlic sauce, and Hunan beef. Potstickers were tough and flavorless, and the mushu pork had a pre-chewed, rubbery texture. And those were the good dishes. The eggplant and beef were drenched with thick, overly sweet, syrupy sauce. I only had one bite of each, and got the check. Please, don't be misled. This is not Chinese food in any way, it's garbage mud for the octogenarian blue plate special set. It's not even that inexpensive. read more

I love this place! One of the gems I missed most when I moved. I order the same thing every time: salt and pepper chicken wings, beef chow fun with gravy, won ton soup and combination fried rice. Everything was delicious. Won ton soup is such a simple soup but this place has the best won ton soup. I've never had anything like it. Mainly consists of fatty pork chunks, cabbage, and pork wontons. Something about those fatty pork chunks in the soup makes this soup different than others. There's a lot of overpriced mediocre Chinese restaurants in this area. You know the ones...in strip malls, which you'd be fine with since the food is OK if the prices were at least cheaper? Well, while craving Chinese food, we were on the hunt to try a new place. We didn't want to pay a fortune and we wanted the food to be good. We're happy we tried Hunan Restaurant! We found what we were looking for!! This isn't by any means the best ever Chinese restaurant, but it's a super solid Americanized Chinese restaurant and the prices are great. We'll likely return! We ordered 5 dishes for the two of us...yes, we're piggies! The total was $46 for our to-go order. We had a generous dinner for two, followed by lunch for two, and lunch for one on day 3. Value is great here! Dishes are about $8-13. Take out portions come in standard Chinese take out boxes, except for the Honey Walnut Shrimp dish which came in a plastic tray flip top container. We ordered: - BBQ Pork Chow Fun - Dry (This comes wet or dry. I asked which was preferable and the staff said everyone likes it dry, so that's what we ordered. It was good, but the portion could have been bigger. I'd order this again though. I love Chow Fun noodles!) - Hunan's Combo Fried Rice (Fried Rice isn't really my thing, but it was the husband's choice. This is decent. No complaints, but no compliments. It wasn't greasy which was great. Fried Rice in general is boring to me.) - Mushu Pork (This was more like Mushu Pork Burritos. The wraps were the size of tortillas which was strange, but the actual mixture was good. We got 4 big wraps which still wasn't enough for the portion of meat. It never is, is it?) - Honey Walnut Shrimp (Super solid! I'd order this again. The sauce was good on this. Sometimes it's too mayo-ish or liquidy? This wasn't. Shrimp was cooked really well too. This was definitely my favorite of the dishes we ordered.) - General Tso's Chicken (Husband thought this was honestly made incorrectly. It was over seasoned/too salty. He kind of thought it was an accident that maybe they just messed up this evening. This dish was just OK for me. I'd try a different dish next time though like the Sesame Chicken perhaps.) - Bonus Free Spring Rolls (4 free spring rolls! These were ok. They're the small ones, so there's not too much filling though) They have a binder of photos of their dishes you can browse, which is kind of cool. I think the photos could be better quality though, but they're still useful. I like to browse photos before I order (usually on Yelp). Maybe I can help them with new photos? ;) I didn't take any photos this time since we ordered take out. There was a long wait for take out when we arrived on a Friday night. They said it would be 45 minutes to an hour. It's a very popular take out spot! Decor inside is minimal and basic. This isn't the type of place you eat in. The food took a bit longer than expected. We left and came back about 50-55 minutes later (filled up gas and went to Safeway down the street for a few bits) and we had to wait another 5-10 minutes. They gave us some free spring rolls for the wait. How nice! The staff here were very nice and helpful. There's a big parking lot too. Think this used to be like a Foster's Freeze or some sort like a Car Hop Diner. Anyway, this is a solid, convenient, decently priced Chinese restaurant. It ticked the boxes for me. It's definitely better than what I've found around, but I'm still definitely pining for the true gem with absolutely amazing food (and still decent prices). For now, thank you Hunan Restaurant!
