I yelped this place quickly prior to coming here and was surprised that it only has 3 stars! Certainly a place with quick service, huge portions, at good prices would deserve 4? There are so many options on the menu. Great family owned sit down fast food place that is walking distance from Santa Clara University. They always have reasonably priced lunch specials with generous portions. For the type of restaurant it is, a family owned burger joint, this is as good as it gets which is why I give it 5 stars! Food is delicious and inexpensive, and whether you get a hot dog, burger or philly cheese steak you will be delighted. They have some cool memorabilia especially the Santa Clara U famous alum Steve Nash. A great lunch place in downtown Santa Clara (yes, there is a downtown in Santa Clara!). Everything here is made to order, and yes, the portions are huge! They have burgers, sandwiches, sausages (5 kinds I counted), veggie burgers, chicken and fish sandwiches, gyros, falafels and salads! The food is served in baskets, and if you order fries (the huge steak fries), they put it in a separate basket! It's not like the other places that put the fries in the same basket as your sandwich. I feel like this is a place that I'll only go to if I'm broke or looking for a good cheap eat. The food is moderate, but also greasy. I had the Hawaiian Teriyaki Burger with some onion rings. The burger was pretty good overall, but nothing like the ones we have in Hawaii (which I should have expected in the first place). However it was a decent attempt. The onion rings were kinda hard, probably wouldn't order em again. I was very disappointed when I had to buy a bottled drink because their soft drink machine wasn't working, I found that pretty hard to believe. When you're a starving student, I'm sure Hungry Hound can seem like 5-star cuisine. The bf and I found this place on accident, sort of. I wanted to try out Frozo's next door, and he wanted "real food." I got my yogurt, while he got the hot link next door. It was hard to decide whether to write a review based on service alone, seeing as we didn't get a chance to order anything... (read on)... For my first class at Santa Clara University (SCU), the professor asked us to go observe a local business without initially interacting with the staff. My team of 4 walk into this place and proceed to sit down with a piece of paper in our hands. We flash them a nice, cordial smile... then it goes downhill. Who we assume is the owner tells the lady, who we assume is his wife, to ask us what we want and what we were doing there. We decide it is probably better to tell them seeing as the guy looked pretty pissed off already. She goes to tell him it is for class, then returns to us telling us we have to leave. We decide that we will order some food, hoping that would extend our visit. Owner tells us that it would be $15 for a side of fries or something small. At this point we tell the owner the whole purpose of our visit and how it was for a class from the place where most of his customers must come from, SCU. He wasn't having it so we went outside and observed the place from the outside, anyways. Same difference and saved us $15. If you're reading this and you haven't seen this place already, save yourself a trip. The place is nothing more than a dive-y burger spot where the owner does not value people in general. The tables were sticky, the owner was dripping with sweat (while flipping burgers...mmm) and there are much better options nearby. Go to Mondo Burrito or Henry's or Quizno's or Round Table or just plain go home but don't go to this place... damn sure I never will!!! Plus he has a sign there that says, "We have the right to refuse service to anyone." Well I went Yelpiing in search of a burger joint and came across this place. All the photos were really outdated and the reviews were mixed but thought what the hoohahh I'll go check it out. I had been craving a grilled ham and cheese sandwich for awhile and noticed amongst the photos that they served them so that sealed the deal for me. When I got there I noticed the inside wasn't anything spectacular but cozy enough for my lik ing, they had two TV's on with sports going (schwiing!) Looking at the menu I had to say I was quite surprised at the bargain-type prices, figuring it must be really small portions, so I ordered a grilled ham and cheese sandwich and small basket of fries. I parked myself at a table (nice tables, love the benches, gives it a picnic-y feel) When my order came out I was shocked to see a basket of fries big enough to feed two and a sandwich loaded with ham and very generous with the cheese, making it all gooey, just the way I like it andIt was served on a toasted roll. I couldn't finish all the fries though I did put a pretty good dent in them, and decided to grab a steak sandwich to go for later. I have been to hungry hound. The food is greasy gross and over priced. For the price ad grease from the food there they shoud at least re-do the inside. I rather go to togos next door or even fro zos. You also might get better service too.! There is a janitor or he might be the owner he does not allow u to sit on the benches outside either unless you have bought something from there or if u eat on the benches he gives u a time limit. He chased away some people as I was walking by. Talk about rude ot the right thing to do in front of someone who has ate the nasty food there or has a lot of freinds that live in santa clara.
