My parents were ranting to me about this place on their recent visit. I'm from a family that specializes in Hue food. We used to own a restaurant and my dad was the head cook, so we are quite picky with certain dishes. For them to be impressed with this place spoke volumes for me. When I came here with my family, we ordered the same dishes they tried previously: Mi Quang, Bun Bo Hue, Com Hen, Banh Beo, and the Banh Combo. To our surprise, none of the soup dishes were good at all. They had absolutely no flavor, actually had the wrong flavors, and we almost didn't want to finish our meal. We were starving too! We were very confused... My parents said their food was much better before. Unfortunately, I don't know if we will be back for a while. On another note, the restaurant is pretty nice and clean. Their bun bo hue is flavorless, with no flavor or how bun bo hue should taste like. I had to drown in lime and sate. Their noodles were overcooked and has no bounce to it at all. There was no spicy at all. Their my quang though looks appealing from the toppings really lack flavor. The only thing that was decent was their banh beo. read more

If you love Hue food, this is the spot to go! I can't speak for the noodle/soup dishes, but we ordered everything sticky, chewy, and gelatinous. The banh beo was a little mushy for my tastes (a lot better at quan hy down the street) but it may be because they were sitting out while we were waiting for our guests to arrive. Never actually ate in the restaurant, but I always order takeout so I'll based this review on their food only. I always get their banh hoi with grilled beef with fish sauce and it's literally the best banh hoi I ever eaten. I never eat banh hoi anywhere else besides here. The fish sauce tends to be spicier than the average, but it gives a good kick in the food! The portion is big and it's around $7 which is not bad at all. Unethical practice of business and customer service. There was a long strand of hair in our banh beo. My grandma told the guy about it and he takes it to the back and comes out with another mini plate of banh beo. Turns out, they just took out the strand of hair and gave us back the same place. GROSS!!!!!!! I know exactly that they did that because I strategically placed 3 green onions side by side and the dish he brought back had the 3 green onions side by side. Bad Points - Bad service. I asked the old man to explain a dish. He replied with (-.-) and spoke fast. Did I go to the same restaurant as everyone else? Bad service? Really? The service here was great! I got here before my dining companion and was seated anyway, our server tolerated my half-English-half-bad-Vietnamese mumble-ordering, our three dishes came out as though expertly timed, and even though we lingered for almost 3 hours, nobody gave us the side-eye or pointedly swept the floor by our table or anything. Their smiles substituted just fine for conversational English. Plus, I think this may be one of very few restaurants that serves Hue-style banh khoai, and to-the-note, too! People call banh xeo Vietnamese tacos, but banh khoai are closer in size to standard tacos. They're folded in half and stuffed with pork, shrimp, straw mushrooms, and bean sprouts, served with the usual giant vegetable medley. If you wrap your banh khoai in lettuce, it'll be easier when the whole middle falls out, which it will as soon as you turn it sideways. The thick sauce it comes with is peanutty rather than fishy, but it has more depth and less sweetness to it than a standard peanut sauce. The banh khoai here is crispy on the outside of the batter and soft on the inside, so that it almost melts into the fillings and holds them (sort of) together. We also got com hen (baby clam rice salad), mi quang (spicy yellow noodles topped with pork loaf and shrimp and some other stuff) and oc nhoi (snail pork loaf). This was way too much food for 2 people. The com hen here is extremely well balanced. Quan Vy Da's is better on a good day, but worse on a bad day. They do use green apple slices instead of the taro stem/starfruit combination, which I guess is sort of cheating, but flavorwise, it works. It's light and fresh and not too stinky (though you can make it stinkier if you want with the purple anchovy paste). It doesn't have too much of any one type of herb, or too much rice, or even too many clams. It's just the ideal blend. The mi quang overall is solid, but where it really shines is with the pork loaf, which I usually dismiss as gussied up spam, but here they give it some much-needed attention with a crispier outer skin and more distributed peppercorn, plus some spice combination I can't parse. As for the oc nhoi, when we initially saw it on the menu we thought 'why would anyone want to add snails to boring pork loaf? it'd be like rubbery spam' but after being blown away by the rest of the food we thought we'd see if they could prove us wrong. They did. It was a lemongrassy, gingery, tender hot dog. I will almost certainly be back soon to try their banh it ram, because I hate banh it ram, but I bet Huong Vy can make me love it! read more

It's not like I work here... :( I do enjoy their food here, Yes.. it's not that amazing compared to the original Huong Giang, but here's what I think: Pros: - Bigger parking lot (albeit, still small for weekends because it can get packed still) - Cleaner restaurant location (the cleaner it is, the suckier the food is? shrugs. ) - With it's "reputation" as not being as good as the original.. it's not as busy.. which is a pro for me on weekdays when my office orders and I go and pick up.. because it's not too much of a hassle to go in and pick up. :) Cons: - service. What's that? - accent. Oh good lord.. I'm southern vietnamese... I can barely understand northern dialect as it is let along central. Forget that. LOL. (though I can't blame them for that one, that's my fault though isn't it) Why we keep ordering from here: as noted above, the quieter/emptier set up makes for faster picking up for the office, especially if we order 6-8 entrees. Came here over the weekend with my mom because I was craving "Hue" food. My mom's side of the family is from Hue so I grew up on this food. We ordered: banh beo, banh nam, banh uot tom chay and banh it ram. Seriously, the only somewhat impressive dish was the banh beo and I'm not even convinced that this place is any better than Quan Hy (if you know anything about banh beo, you would get that this comparison is major diss). Banh beo is a steamed rice flour dish, cooked in individual plates, topped with shrimp, fried shallots, sauteed green onion and pork rinds. Most places will make everything in-house - the shrimp is personally chopped and broken up, the pork rinds crispy and flavorful. Well, I can tell that something was up with the shrimp here because it was a bright pink/orange color (made me think there was something artificial about it) and the pork rinds came straight from a bag. Ugh. The banh it ram (half deep-fried rice flour dough stuffed with shrimp and pork). Meh. Felt too doughy and not enough seasoning. Banh uot tom chay - same mutant shrimp. Banh nam - now this is something I crave all the time. Hands down, my favorite Hue dish. It's a steamed shrimp cake wrapped in banana leaf. You unwrap the banana leaf and just pour fish sauce/nuoc mam cham and eat it out of the wrapper. Well, the cakes were puny. Not very flavorful. Service: When we first got here, the restaurant was sort of empty. Despite that, our party of 3 was seated at a tiny table fit for a party of 2. By nature of the dishes we ordered (think 20+ small dishes of banh beo, 7 wrapped banh nam, etc) we needed a lot of table space. When our first dish was served, I went to hand my mom some of the dishes and knocked fish sauce all over the table. When another server came by to drop off more food, he commented "what a small table for all this food!" My mom then asked, "why didn't you seat us at a bigger table then?!" and the server shrugged off until we asked the host if we could move. After some commotion, we were finally moved. ugh. The overall experience here was definitely "meh, I've had better" and as a result, when friends ask me for good "Hue" food, I would be betraying my mom's hometown by directing them here. read more

If I could give this place 0 stars, I would I made a bet with my sister that I could complete a review before my food comes out and by the looks of it, it seems like if be right. The only good thing this place has to offer is their bun bo hue. Service is horrendous. Please don't put yourself through the frustration of coming here when it's crowded because you will be kept waiting here FOREVER. The servers will look at you and ignore you. I understand that business is nuts on Christmas day. Still, a one-hour wait after we've ordered and blatant avoidance of my questions is unacceptable. Pretending I'm not standing in front of you doesn't make me disappear. Don't tell me repeatedly to wait longer or that it's just "few more minutes" when you and I both know otherwise. I wanted Bun bo hue and drove by Ngu Binh but it was super packed and a long wait list. So drove over here to try their food. It's a small plaza and it's across from Bolsa High School and Garden Grove Park. There's a new yogurt place that just opened in this area, Yogurt Delight. Anyways, we ordered the bun bo hue and asked them not to make it spicy. I had the cam vat (freshly squeezed orange juice, which was pretty good and it did taste fresh..who knew). The broth of the soup wasn't as red or flavorful compared to Ngu Binh. The slice beef was a bit tough due to the tendon. Couldn't be lady like and had to shove the whole piece in. Midway eating I looked over to my dad's bowl and saw a piece of hair in his soup. ACK! That just stopped me from eating anymore. But the bun bo hue isn't bad here at all. If Ngu Binh is busy I would come by here but would totally inspect all the food to make sure there isn't any hair. read more

This place has the most horrible service i've ever experienced! Avoid if you can! Took my parents to eat here because the other restaurant that we wanted to go to was closed. There was a large party along with a couple of small tables when we arrived. When we step foot in the door, no one greeted us. I had to let them know that we needed a table. Once we were seated, no one came to give us a menu or table setting. There was this table next to us that had a couple of guys that came in right before us and ALL the attention was on them. We were literally right next to that table yet no service at all. Long story short, i had to grab the menu, grab table settings, and hunt them down to order. [ A while back I wrote up a list for a friend of 8 restaurants in Westminster that have popped up in the past couple of years. These all have Hue in common, which is capital city of the central province of Vietnam of the same name. It's like New York, New York. The review was probably done in summer of 2007. ] We enjoyed Huong Vy. And are always delighted to find a Vietnamese restaurant that is expanding from bun/mi/rice plates outwardly. There's a young man who deals with the gringos (is there a Vietnamese word for "round eye"?), while the owner peeks around and frets. She's a charming lady who started her empire with her previous restaurant, a Hué joint in the back of a supermarket, that's still working. This one's been here maybe two years. We asked the guy about one dish and he screwed up his face and said, you won't like it and tapped his nose. Apparently the fish sauce, which came in a side dish was not gringo-friendly. I use to go with waiter's recommendations, but not so much these days. It's getting to be habit to take these as a challenge. Same this time. It was really good. It was another clam dish with rice this time; bun hén. The Hue restaurants all seem to feature clam dishes chopped up some kinda way. Nancy is way locked into the banh cuon stuff so we've gotten the "sampler" almost everywhere including here, a few times. They also have a seafood pancake too. It's another obvious Hue menu item. All these places' main claim to fame seems to be rice-flour sheets in different configurations named banh cuon, banh beo, banh loc, banh nam and others. Perhaps steamed in a little dish with some crumbled shrimp laid on so that it can fall off when you try to eat it. That's banh beo. Sometimes they wrap it *around* something a shrimp or piece of pork (banh loc) and it's transparent. And they all do them slightly differently. At least they, and Nancy, tell me it's different. The guy came back a couple of times to find out if I'd died from the horror of the clams-with-nose-tap. Then a lady stopped by on her way out, just a customer, to quiz us about who we were and why we were there. Later she told us the owner, apparently a friend, was really worried we'd hate it the nose-tap. So later when the gal herself asked us we went out of our way to praise her. Curious bargain: Fifty cents for either the "hue style park ham" and the "hue style park hash". Can't beat anything edible for fifty-cents... I'm guessing. -- Gerry read more

The wifey and I are always happy about our annual trip to see her parents in OC because of all of the lovely restaurants in Bolsa. In Chicago, we have a lot of Vietnamese options but not much from Hue. This place specializes in it and does a rather good job. Sometimes, I will admit the service can be a bit spotty. two words: BANH BEO. Their prices here are amazing. 3 people could actually end up being $20 or less. My family ordered the Mi Quang, Bo buc lac, and banh beo, and total was $20 + drinks. I only come here for the banh beo. For 4.95, you can get them in the cute little plates, or a big plate. The little plates only have 9, and well, the big plates has a lot. But, my mom says it's more fun eating from the small plates, so I usually get that :) read more

Hue oh Hue! When I want Hue food this is our place to go! Owned by the same people as Huong Giang, but so much more relaxing to eat at. My husband's family is from Hue, so we often are out for Hue food. This place has good authentic food and great service, never rude like some other Viet restaurants. It is never crowded. We always start with some appetizers, like Banh Nam (rice flour with ground shrimp steamed in a banana leave) or Banh It Ram (rice flour dumpling with shrimp & pork both steamed and fried). My 5 year old gets the Banh Beo (rice flour cakes with ground shrimp and fried pork skin). If you want your soup hot, wait to ordered after you get your appetizers, b/c otherwise they have no since of timing. Bun Bo Hue is the signature soup, with pork hocks, shrimp cakes, blood cake, rice noodles, bean sprouts, banana flowers, and much much more. I get mine with out the Blood cake and tendons, but my husband gets Dac Biet (the special). Another great choice is My Quang, which is a dry yellow noodles, with pork, shrimp, vegetables, and sauce. If you wanted great Hue food, you should come here. I mean well... not so much anymore. It's different now. My dads side is Hue and my aunts can make a mean bowl of Bun Bo Hue. This place used to be way better. Pricing: Great. We order 3 bowls of of bun bo hue, 1 ban beo, 1 cha gio, and banh uot thit nuong and it came out to $54 dollars. Thats pretty cheap. Service: Awful Every time I've been here, there service has been crap. There is one older man who runs the front and he barely acknowledges your presence. I asked for 3 plates, he only brings two. I asked for one more, he gives me a dirty look, mumbles and then takes an order from another table. The grandpa aged man who served us would never acknowledge me when Id ask for something like a glass of water. He would still bring it but wouldn't tell me he heard me so I end up asking 3 times for everything. They all walk away from you. Food: 1) Bun Bo Hue: 2/5 The meat is good and there is a good amount. There are too many noodles. And worst of all broth is NOT spicy enough like it should be. I don't prefer eating spicy but in a bun bo hue it needs to be. I don't even think the broth was that great. I just threw in a whole bunch of spicy stuff before I ate it to give it more flavor and spiciness. 2) Cha Gio: 4/5 Came out hot, took a little bit of time but they have to be deep fried. Flavoring of the filling was great. They came out with a side of veggies and fish sauces like it traditionally should be served. 3) Ban Beo: 4/5 Came out super fast. Hot and fish sauce was perfect. It was great. 4) Banh Uot Thit Nuong: 4/5 I always go here to order these for potlucks. The taste is great. No complains except of the occasional one that is already falling apart before you've even touched it. Even though there food overall is great unfortunately since their service is so awful I won't be coming back for take out orders or to dine in anymore. This is Huong Giang's 3rd restaurant. For some reason, this restaurant is not as packed as Huong Giang. IMHO, the food here is a lil bit more pricier than Huong Giang because Huong Vy is a more trendy restaurant. So the food here comes out with better presentation and such. For me, I prefer cheap, good and authentic Vietnamese food, so that is why I stick with Huong Giang. I believe this restaurant sells more different type of dishes here than Huong Giang. For example, they have Banh Khoai, which is similar to a Banh Xeo. Banh Khoai is one of my fav Hue food and I think Huong Vy is the only place in Little Saigon that has it. I had the Banh Nam and Mi Quang. The Banh Nam was good but not special. The Mi Quang was probably one of the best I've had in Orange County. Perfectly salty with the right amount of egg noodles, broth, and meat. The decor is minimal and the ambiance is similar to any other Vietnamese joint in the area but I will definitely be returning here for the Mi Quang! read more

Their banh beo is the best I've had anywhere in Little Saigon. It's really fresh even the pork rinds. The only issue I would have is that an order is only 9 versus elsewhere that gives 12. The place is clean and spacious. The staff is mostly older men and no one communicates with each other. The service is slow but the food makes you for it and comes out fairly fast. If not for the lack of service, I would give it 4 stars. read more

Comparatively and sadly empty for a nice and well-kept restaurant in Westminster. But you can see why from the food. Houng Vy specializes in Hue food of Central Vietnam, so I opted for the Banh Canh, literally "cake soup." Though the soup was very good, the noodles were not spongy and soft but were rather thick, almost pasty as you chewed on them. It ruined the dish for me. Also, the shrimp sausages were rather forgettable. BF's filet mignon dish was also below average. It's a rather easy dish to make, but the meat came out a little dry and not seasoned well. We lucked out though because we came out to dinner during the half time of the Mavericks/Heat playoffs and were ecstatic that there was a tv here! read more
