This place is worth all the hype. From the moment you walk through the door you feel like you are the most important person in the room which speaks to their exemplary front of house service. This review is specifically about Julie, the host, who provided the poorest hosting experience I have ever encountered. I had reserved two seats at the bar. When we arrived, Julie took my husband and me to the bar but seated us at the worst possible seats, despite the bar being completely empty at the time. We were placed with our backs to the restaurant and facing the entrance, which made no sense given the availability. I politely asked if we could move to other seats that offered a better view. She stated that those seats were "reserved." However, about 10 minutes later, two guests arrived, were seated elsewhere in the restaurant, and then came over and took the very seats we had been told were unavailable. The interaction felt unnecessarily controlling and dismissive, with no effort to be accommodating or thoughtful toward guests who had made a reservation. My husband and I travel extensively and dine out often, and this was one of the least considerate hosting experiences we've ever had. Came here for my girlfriend's birthday dinner and honestly it just didn't hit the way we expected. Service was really slow the whole night and there were a few mistakes with our order. The Caesar salad was supposed to be made tableside first, but the waiter forgot, so we ended up getting our entrées before it. He only made the Caesar afterward, which threw the pacing of the meal off even more. On top of that, the entrées didn't all come out at once, and there were a bunch of smaller things like that throughout the night that just added up. I work in the food industry so I try to be pretty understanding, but for the price, it just didn't feel worth it. The steak also didn't really have much flavor, which was disappointing. I don't want to single out any staff member, but the whole experience felt a bit unorganized, especially for a birthday dinner we were trying to make special. A Steakhouse is a steakhouse but the staff at Hy's staff makes the experience special. Our service staff, like a team of four or five, were professional and attentive. We ended the night with sharing both desserts done table side. Cherries Jubilee and Bananas Foster. There was a long (45 min) wait from the appetizer to our steaks. A great birthday dinner! I am always hesitant to go to steakhouses as I grew up surrounded by the best cuts of meat. I can say that the steak was cooked perfectly! The vegetables and potatoes greatly complimented each other as well as the steak. We wanted to have wine with dinner. It is lightly seasoned with herbs which lets the lamb flavor itself shine through. The Chilean Sea Bass was soft, tender, and flaky. The sauce was bright and creamy, and the pasta was al dente. The delmonico was perfectly tender and flavorful. Dessert. So. Freaking. Good. The creme brûlée was tart, refreshing, and creamy with a perfect top. Perfect for finishing out a meal. Hy's is always an amazing experience. They have it all! Ambiance, service, quality of food, quality of desserts, great wine, and now they even have a happy hour at the bar seating. We usually request to sit in the library area for the beautiful ambiance! We didn't try the happy hour, but went to celebrate our anniversary. First time we tried the scallop appetizer and it was cooked perfectly! Our server, Chris M recommended it and we were definitely glad we tried it, it might be a new favorite! Escargot is our go to and always a winner! We shared the American wagyu 14 oz steak soecial so that we wouldn't have leftovers and ended the night with some decaf coffee and cherries jubilee flambé! The cherries isn't on the menu since they can't get them in consistently but we were glad we had it. It's been awhile since we had one, our normal go to is the apple streusel flambé. Their flambés start with hand scooped haagan daaz ice cream thats frozen again so that when they pour the sauces on it doesn't melt! One of the only restaurants that serves haagan daaz which my stomach can handle. Service is always top notch, bussers are constantly filling your water and coffee, clearing dishes, cleaning up the crumbs. We always request for Kirby but he was off, but the new guys did awesome! And the servers always do an amazing job to make your dinner enjoyable! Our server Chris M did an excellent job! Took the fam for a Mothers Day Dinner expecting a great experience. We have been coming here for years and unfortunately, this will be our last. Our entrees were running a little late so we were asked if there was anything they can do to ease the wait. We declined knowing that things happen and not a big deal. After all, the restaurant had a great ambience and didn't mind a little wait. We then were offered again and this time, my wife asked for a soft drink. Honestly, I thought, as it sounded, was going to be "comped" (complimentary). Bill comes and we were charged $8 for this soft drink. And a refill came and we were charged another $8. And both times glass filled with ice....$16 for a half can of coke, maybe? In the end, I felt it was about the principal.....do they really need to force a sale when we're spending $150 per person? Recently, they started a small plate Happy Hour Menu that highlights some of their best tastes in a small format for a small investments. This is a fine dining restaurant with a dress code that they post on their website, remind you when they call for reservation confirmation. I was excited to try this place because of the dress code. Tip: if you have a problem with salt make sure to tell your waiter no salt because this place uses too much salt on their food. Interior: it is a lovely restaurant with nice low volume music and then there was a live guitar player that was lovely to listen. All employees are wearing black suits. Very romantic date night or special occasion. The restaurant has different levels so if you struggle with stairs might want to call the restaurant and ask for a lower level. Bathroom: does not match the restaurant because it is outside the restaurant and shared with a church. If you have bad knees you do have to go up a flight of stairs to get to the bathroom. The vegetable medley was described as colored cauliflower, I explained that I love colored cauliflower and the waiter mentioned I will enjoy the orange and purple cauliflower. My husband ordered medium rare plus on his steak. They flipped the doneness of our steaks. I should have sent mine back for cooking more but I did not. I gave my husband half my steak instead and ate the end that was cooked the way I liked it. The baked potato was not hot and the colored cauliflower was a disappointment. I got a tiny drop of purple and I bit of orange, but as soon as I tried the cauliflower I had to give the rest to my husband because it was so salty that I just could not eat it! The waiter brought a salt and pepper shaker and I was kid, this food is so salty you don't need any more salt but rather you need to hold off on the salt. No fresh ground pepper! My steak tasted good but no smoke flavor. My husband Australia steak was better flavor and hint of smoke. Hy's is really well known around Honolulu for being a great Old World Steakhouse. Even our Lyft driver who spoke little English, told us so! I did some research and found out it's the only US restaurant in the small Canadian born chain. We went there for the Happy Hour menu, which requires you dine at/in the bar, but still really requires reservations. Overall, it was a very good experience. And we've been around enough to know an excellent steak house. But not perfect. Here's a brief breakdown: Good-*The ambiance! Very traditional dark wood wine cellar motif. You must wear biz casual here, no slippas or tee shirts. * Hubby's filet came out overcooked at first, but they redid it to a true med. rare and he raved that it was one of his top five steaks. It was tender and had a unique, smoky flavor( almost like on the grill but better). No need for sauces or a lot of seasonings. *Salad was very good, light, and not overpowering. *French onion soup was excellent *Service at the bar was very good as well. Attentive bartender/waitress. *Good drink menu Could be improved- The A5(Wagyu) offering on the Happy Hour menu misses the mark. There wasn't a good description on menu. Serving was very tiny, little steak chunks were all fat (even though it was tender fat) mixed with small chunks of potato and a few tiny mushrooms. It was very greasy. *The Happy Hour menu Lava cake. We recently went to Hy's to celebrate my husband's birthday. We were a party of six. The evening started off with the disability access lift out of operation. We were at the appropriate level we had easy access to our table in a secluded area in the back of the restaurant and close to the restrooms which were th hotel restrooms. Our server whose name I believe was chris, with a little bit too folksy and friendly for that type of restaurant. He was however attentive and friendly and had an upbeat nature. The food in general is far overpriced for its quality. My husband's prime rib was supposed to be 14 oz but it was smaller and it had at least 3 oz of fat. It obviously wasn't trimmed. It's my understanding that this restaurant does not do personalized cuts of beef as do some of its competitors such as Capital Grille and Signature. Four out of the five guests could not eat their steaks because there was so much fat and unchewable parts. The only edible steak was the filet mignon. The vegetables and mashed potatoes were cold. My friend ordered the French onion soup and returned it because the cheese was burned. They quickly offered her a replacement french onion soup but in the end charged her for both. Don't bring your own birthday cake because they charge $34 to cut and serve the cake without giving you any warning in advance. If you're ever in Vancouver or Whistler the Hy's there is exceptional. What an AWESOME celebration we had at Hy's Steak House!!! Our reservations were at 6 pm and we didn't leave till 9pm. We were celebrating our wedding anniversaries (all three couples). First of all, our server was very attentive and kind. In fact, because we came during Mahalo Fest week we had this incredible dinner offer of a pre-fixe where the dessert lets you know if you win a special price so of course two of seven of us ordered it and it was fun and delicious in a "Willy Wonka" way when the dessert came. The pre-fixe came with a delicious crab cake, then mixed berry salad and French onion soup with the main dish of a tender and onolicious wagyu steak and for dessert an incredible light but fun fare of yumminess! If you got the gold filling then you would win a special prize; if it was the raspberry filling you lost. All in all, it was fun despite not winning. For the rest of us, we got our favorites- Dry-Aged Ribeye with Bone In, mash potatoes, Table side Caesar, Delmonico, Ribeye, and of course the best Banana Foster Table Side ever! The ambiance is always comfortable and although a bit more formal- we savored the previous time in celebratory mode with amazing food. Do we always come back? HECK YEAH! Why because it's always a special place like no other in Hawaii and believe me we've gone to many of the upscale steak houses (our family was in the food business) especially for celebrating!!! Hy's Steak House is one of those famous local staples I've heard about for many years but never had the opportunity to visit until recently. I see many reviews for Hy's date from years ago; they were closed for a while and opened in the summer of 2024 having remodeled their kitchen and other behind-the-scenes things. Our friends that invited us for a special meal were delighted that nothing on the ambiance side had changed. If you're curious about the photos, it's because we went on Halloween night and all the staff was dressed up! Spooky tunes were also playing, both over the speakers and by the live musician near our table for the night. They do have a dress code unlike much of Waikiki, so be prepared for that. They take reservations, and it did fill up while we were there. It's fine dining; you will be paying a lot but getting amazing food and service making it worthwhile. We had a nice sized group of about 10 that evening, so we had the seafood tower and spinach salad service as an appetizer to share. You must get a salad service both for the entertainment and a delicious dish. We also had drinks all around from wine and beer (not really a great beer selection), to cocktails and liquor. One even had a Halloween special green eyeball. Their steak choices range from $90 to $200; some are fixed plates paired with starches and vegetables, others you choose, and some you have to add. All the produce was fresh and colorful; potatoes so creamy. Cuts of steak were just delectable, I had the filet medium rare, and savored every bite. Me and my hubby have wanted to go check out Hy's for a while now and we were so excited when we were able to do a walk-in without a reservation on Thanksgiving. It quickly went downhill when they sat us in the bar area at these tiny little low top tables (we joked that we were sat at the "kids table" for Thanksgiving). My husband is 6'2" so he had to stretch his legs out straight to fit at the table. Despite being told we had 3 servers who would be helping us, we waited for a long time in between check-ins and our water glasses went empty. It took almost 20 minutes to get our bill and this was only after we flagged down a hostess to ask for it. The food was the biggest let down. I will preface this by saying that I used to live in Waikīkī when I was in college and my friend lived nearby. Every time I went to his house I walked past Hy's and thought it smelled amazing but I didn't have the money to afford it back then. So this first (and probably only) visit was 25 years in the making so the build up was high. The food: The free cheesy garlic toast was not toasted. The bread was just white bread that had the top torched quickly so it was cold, greasy and wet (the butter was just soaked into the bread). We ordered the large prime rib, medium rare. It was pretty much raw in the middle. The crust was WAY too salty (and I am a salt-a-hololic) and there were giant pockets of fat instead of a nicer even marbling. The veggies it came with were under seasoned, undercooked zucchini. The starch choice we picked was the truffle fries and they were burnt to the point that many were just empty skins that had the potatoes cooked out of it. To add insult to injury, we were charged $5 extra for the truffle fries and the portion was tiny. $95 total for a mediocre plate of food is unacceptable. The worst thing we ordered (possibly out of all year) was the truffle carbonara. The shitaake mushrooms were completely BURNED to smithereens. They were black and charred like chitlins from the bottom of the fryer. The truffles were wet like they came out of a can. There was no bacon as described on the menu. And they added these crumbs to the top that tasted like crushed cheez-it's. The sauce was dry and flavorless. I took a few bites and tried to pretend it was ok but I was wondering why and how a pasta dish that's almost $40 could be inedible. I tried a few shitaakes thinking maybe it was just the first 1-2 that were burnt but it was all of them. The same fry cook was probably overwhelmed that night bc they burned the fries too. When I pointed it out to our server, he said "that's how they're served". I had to send the pasta back. Do you know how embarrassing it is to do that at a high-end place?! The server asked if I wanted something else but at that point nothing they served so far was good so I said no. At least they didn't charge us for the pasta. I'd previously considered Hy's for a special occasion kind of meal (anniversary/ birthday) but I'm glad Honolulu has many other great options. It was comical and offensive how terrible Thanksgiving dinner was to the point where I thought maybe there was a hidden camera or someone in the kitchen mistook us for their mortal enemy. As we left, the person at the front asked us how everything was and we said, "the wine was good". Meaning, the food and experience was terrible. Came in on a Friday evening with a reservation and was immediately seated, which is always nice, but from the time we sat down it took about 15 minutes to receive water. It then took another 20 minutes to be able to order, and about another 20 minutes to receive our appetizer order (a salad), and so on and so forth. The dining room was not full, and there were plenty of wait staff around, so I'm unsure why every single thing took so long. By the time it had been an hour and a half into our dinner, we still hadn't received our entrees. The servers were very attentive when it came to refilling waters and taking plates out of the way, but the wait times between being seated, ordering, and getting our food was atrocious for an establishment where you're guaranteed to spend a few hundred dollars. Truly an exceptional experience in every way. It was our first time here, and they went above and beyond to make sure my family was seated in a comfortable setting without us even asking. The food and service was one of the best we've experienced after years of dining around the world. We loved the paintings, book shelves, and dark wood decor. The presentation honestly reminded me of how Sizzler used to plate their dishes, nothing about it reflected a true fine dining experience.  To be fair, the service was excellent. The staff was attentive, professional, and friendly throughout the evening. The restaurant ambiance was also what you would expect from an upscale steakhouse. Unfortunately, the food simply did not match the atmosphere or the prices. At nearly an $1800 tab, we got ripped off. I actually ate at Jack in the Box after!Crazy! The 10oz Prime Rib at nearly $81 was extremely thin and mostly fat. The lobster tail was as big as a dollar bill. Not even joking. The 15oz Delmonico $98 steak was an even bigger disappointment, anemic in appearance, tough, and lacking the quality you would expect from a restaurant of this caliber. My expectations for this "fine dining" experience ended up falling below the standards of several chain steakhouses I've visited. At these price points, the food quality should be exceptional, not mediocre. As it stands, I personally would not risk dining here again unless management truly makes serious improvements to the quality and consistency of the food. The management team needs to step up their game in a big way. But I doubt this will fall on listening ears. Ugh. I guess the pretty good reviews keep the management engaged and positive. Anakin poured the beer well, with almost non existent head. I rsvp online. Two days prior to our dinner, Hy's called us to confirm the appointment and reminded us of their formal dress code (closed toe shoes and pants for men, nice dressy attire for women). Valet was complementary with optional tipping (be sure to bring some cash for tips) . We had a complimentary cheese bread. We ordered a prime rib, a beef wellington, truffle fries, Passion Colada Crème Brûlée (there was a candle b/c it was my husband's bday), and a beer. Our bill came out to be ~$215 before tip. The beef Wellington was moist, tender, and delicious. It was the best I ever had. The creme brûlée's haupia was creamy. I could taste a lot of coconut. I would say to not always follow what others recommend (or don't recommend in this case) because we loved our experience. My only gripe was that we weren't aware that drinks were not part of the buffet menu so we were charged $8 for a cup of coffee, but once we found out about this, we had several more refills to make up for it.... Parking: Valet service by Hy's. They were really friendly and helpful. Don't forget the tip. Service: Very attentive. The FOH staff were all friendly and attentive to details. For example, we decided to get the crab legs as part of the breakfast buffet and the server noticed this and brought us an extra plate along with the crab leg cracker, lemon, and butter. Small things like this goes a long way!! Food: Excellent.. they had a great variety of fruits, meats, seafood, and desserts. If a toddler approves, then it must be good!
