As one of the only 3 locations that specialize in Thai ice cream rolls in nyc, it offers a variety of additions that isn't as available in the others (can't speak for Juice Spot Cafe since I haven't gone yet). The biggest advantage as a customer is definitely the lack of a long line compared to 10below. It was still good of course, but the location is slightly out of the way, unless you're an NYU student and is already frequently in the area. The rolls hold its shape wonderfully, and doesn't melt as fast. I would say it's more towards the harder ice cream side instead of creamy. The Thai tea flavor was a bit weak for me, but the lychee really gave it that extra kick and texture which was really nice. :) read more

It's a ice cream version of red mango but with more physical effort. I've seen this on the web once upon a time and since then always wanted to try it. Little behold, they have a shop on good ol' Macdougal. I like the experience and the first few bites of the creation. What I didn't like is that within a few minutes the ice cream fuses and is no longer in its rolled up version. Second thing I didn't enjoy was that after a few bites, it didn't matter anymore because it was so darn heavy. This was my first time trying this new Thai rolled / smashed ice cream - very unfamiliar to me. If any of you know me, I am an ice cream connoisseur, lover, and enthusiast. What I mean by this is... if I were to choose a dessert it is ALWAYS ALWAYS ice cream. So of course I've been wanting to try this new genre of ice cream for quite some time now. What is it? You ask.. well if you haven't read any of the one thousand reviews on here.. they pour an ice cream base with your choice of mix-in ingredients on their custom designed metal plate that can get as cold as -15 degrees Fahrenheit. Using metal paddles they chop and smash the ingredients together, spread it into a thin layer and in just two minutes, the ice cream firms up and it's scraped into chubby rolls, ready to serve. Anyway I liked the texture and taste, **must note it is very very different than your normal ice cream (so it is not an apples to apples compare here), but I thought the experience was worth a try. I tried the cookie spree and the thai lychee both were super flavorful. The service was great, they were very friendly, and it was fun to watch the employees in the process of rolling my dessert. I've heard so many people raving about the Thai rolled ice cream at 10below, but I just can't bring myself to brave the hour-long lines. I dropped by I-CE NY on a whim with my friend as we were passing through the village one afternoon, and I am so glad I did. The staff here are so sweet and wonderful. I can't stress this enough. They were so patient with us, even as we stood there contemplating the menu choices for a straight five minutes. They explained the entire process to us and gave us their personal recommendations, which was so cute - great employees are hard to come by in the city. The ice cream was so, so delicious. I have to admit that I was skeptical of the whole "rolled ice cream" thing because I found it hard to believe that it would taste anything different from normal ice cream. I couldn't have been more wrong. The texture is so rich, creamy and unique. The flavors are so dense, and the ice cream just melts on your tongue in the weirdest but most satisfying way. So far i've tried the vanilla base with oreo mixer and condensed milk, and the thai iced tea base with condensed milk. Both were so good, although I would recommend the Thai iced tea flavor more. The only thing I would have liked was a bit more condensed milk drizzle. They were kind of skimpy on it. Just a word of warning - the shopfront is really tiny and only has three or so places to sit, so it can get pretty crowded in the store at peak hours. I've tried all three thai ice cream spots, but I-CE NY is my go-to spot! They are smart to serve Thai iced tea ice cream, which tastes exactly like the drink and Lychee mix-in fulfills the thai tea flavor. For other flavors, I've tried their green tea and it's flavorful (not just plain and lack taste like the other places) and I've also tried their cookie&cream (Vanilla with Oreo) and I like it. So, be careful when choosing what to mix in your flavor. My suggestion is that you should ask their staff for suggestion. The ice cream itself has a different texture from regular scooped ice cream. The first time I went to I-CE-NY, they just newly opened but everything went well. The service was quick. Their thai tea ice cream met my expectation and their staff was nice. Before I left the store, I suggested them that they should have mochi and red bean as toppings. They told me that many customers suggested them and they were working on it. Today I went again to try more flavor and I noticed that they already added Mochi and red bean. I appreciate that they listen to their customers and act fast.
