I've only had their cake, Oprah's favorite... And speaking as a die hard chocolate lover.. This cake was okay. It had the chocolate ganache covering a chocolate cake with more chocolate cream and cream cheese fillings, but it just didn't have that deep cocoa flavor I was anticipating. I mean it's better than supermarket cake for sure, but to be chosen as Oprah's favorite?? I expected my toes to curl, but they stayed straight and flat against my flip flops. Service was whatevers too, not the friendliest. But I guess it was because I wasn't an employee for the airport or an airline as those were the only people who the icebox employees seemed to be nice and friendly to. I got a $15 vegan rice and kale plate to take on the plane at Mia airport. Got settled in on my flight to start eating my dinner. Only food for next 6 hours. Pretty evident the kale was not washed. I'm chewing on sand and dirt. They were out of mushrooms so it's just kale and rice. I guess I'll enjoy my $15 plate of rice. They were also out of all red wine except Pinot noir. Ick. I have always depended on ice box for at least mediocre airport food. Now I can't even depend on this for a quick decent meal. read more

As soon as we walked in we were seated. There is ample seating indoors or outdoors. Very comfortable and I love the decor - very Miami. Miguel, our waiter, introduced himself with a smile and provided excellent service. My husband and I both ordered the Eggbox - mine with the biscuit and his with the everything bagel. Absolutely delicious! The eggs were light and fluffy, potatoes were roasted to the perfect texture, the chicken apple sausage was the perfect mix of savory/sweet. As good as it comes for airport food. I had passed through their original location in Miami Beach all the time but I never tried it. I'm starting to think I should have. Their desserts looked great but I didn't try them because nutritional information is listed on the back (I won't ruin it for you, but I'll just say my jaw dropped.). Instead I had one of the best sandwiches I've had in a while. Juicy roasted turkey between two toasted slices of everything baguette. Some sweet onions and cranberry sauce. Delicious moist stuffing. Icebox takes my beloved tradition of the Black Friday leftover sandwich and elevates it to a terrific height. If the restaurant offered freshly cracked black pepper (which I felt the turkey could have used), my review would be promoted to five stars. The sandwich is a la carte (just comes with a few slices of orange, which squeezed over the sandwich give the turkey a nice boost of flavor). At $12 it's not unusual for airport cuisine but you truly are paying for quality and size. The sandwich is quite generous with its helping of turkey; you can easily save a half for the flight and not go hungry. The environment is extremely cozy, pretty much an upscale living room in the middle of the American Airlines terminal. A great place to burn some time, enjoying a delicious meal and reading the local paper. Service was friendly and prompt. It's far away but if I'm ever in the area and don't feel like Cuban food I'm sure to return! read more

I flew to DC for an interview, and boy, was I rattled and stressed. So what is someone supposed to do while waiting at the airport? Indulge in some sweet delicious Almond Pistachio Cake from Icebox Cafe. The cake tastes like a piece of heaven--not too heavy, cold, and creamy, and it is the perfect thing to eat before boarding a long flight or if you have to wait longer than you should at the airport. MmM.. pistachio!!! :: drools a little :: This was the first time I have ever heard of Icebox Café, and I cannot wait to come here again. The cake only cost $5, which is a prime price for airport food. Located in Terminal D, it is the best restaurant out of everything nearby because their food is healthy and fresh. Man OH MAN! 2 hour layover here after a splendid baby-moon in Cancun left this momma-to-be needing some sweet stuff. And did I find it!! It's down at the end of a terminal, with a seating area and discreetly placed between United gates. It's worth every penny. I spent under 10$ and got a huge slice of a raspberry and lemon cream layer cake, a s'mores cup (thick chocolate pudding, graham cracker crumbles and toasted marshmallow topping) and a bottle of water. Then I got something for my husband. :) It filled me up and is the perfect gem among the regular airport fast food and quick meals. read more

Again, anything in the airport falls short of the actual outside location. Prices are through the roof as expected of airport food, but it's not horrible. Decent breakfast sandwiches and tasty soups. This place caught my eye as I was catching a flight back to PHX (it may or may not have been the bit about it being Oprah's favorite cake), and I finished up my layover with a smoothie and cake from here. I had a smoothie (banana, blueberries, yogurt, OJ) and a slice of coconut buttercream cake. The smoothie was as expected. Unfortunately, the cake, due to its chilled state, wasn't as "fresh" tasting as I would have hoped, but there was definitely something there. Rating a place in the airport seems like a totally useless endeavor. After all you are a captive audience, but on the days when I have an afternoon flight, I really look forward to getting a chance to pop by here before take off. They have a turkey sandwich that has stuffing and cranberry sauce. That makes them the best place in the American terminal. Because nothing on the airplane is free, I had to pack a to go meal for the 4 hour plane ride back to lax. I ordered a small Cesar salad, turkey chili soup, and a small cheesecake. Everything was tasty...especially the soup! There was a multiple selections of daily made soups there, which I was eager to try. Oh, I heard the tortilla soup is excellent. My mother ordered a pre-pack turkey sandwich which looked standard but tasted bland. yuck. Skip the pre made turkey! Everything else was good just a little too pricey. Any transatlantic flight is not complete without the Thai Chicken salad. Zesftul, packed with carrots, beets, sunflower seeds and a litany of lettuces -- it always hits the spot. Airport wanderings. What I do when in a city such as Miami, and by in the city, I mean I am stuck in the airport. I eat. A lot. At local establishments. Or try, at least. Icebox caught my eye. A menu with lots of gussied-up sandwiches. Wine bottles looking all coy and what-not. How could I not grab some munchies here? The main turn-off? ~$3 a pastry. Yikes. Well... it is the airport, after all. The sour cherry turnover was a flaky mass of sweetness, tartness, and butteriness. It had a little more give than phyllo dough, but it was not too gummy as to be akin to a kolache. It was a bit sticky, but is that always a bad thing? The cranberry orange muffin was rich with a heavy butter flavor, but a touch dry. I did like the abundance of walnuts, though. Unfortunately, I saw some small, green dots. Was this spoilage? I sure hope not... Food is deserving of a 4, but just the mere thought of the little green stuff being mold makes me drop this joint a bit. So because I'm an avid thanksgiving food lover I went for the thanksgiving inspired turkey sandwich that had stuffing, cranberry, onions, etc, to compliment the turkey. I had mixed feelings about the sandwich hence something was off in flavor. I think if they served the cranberry sauce on the side so someone can control the level of sweetness this could help and perhaps change the bread as well.
