Headed down to Columbus for my brother's birthday dinner and he looked up Ichiban and we were not disappointed at all! We were seated promptly. The waitress taking the orders for us asked the kitchen about the gluten free questions my mom and I had. She came back and told us they could make the food in the back or the chef could separate the best they could. That was great to have that option available. I'm more there for the show as much as I am the food so we had it done on the table in front of us. I'm not celiac so I'm okay with some cross contamination. Our chef came out and recited our orders and went over the allergy changes and the gluten free request. He covered all of them great. Everything was separated from each other so the sauces didn't cross. He was as enthusiastic and friendly as you want your Hibachi chef to be. The portions were PLENTIFUL. You will not leave wanting more at the table. I know I didn't! I had plenty of leftovers to bring back to the house. Such a fun experience we all had at Ichiban. The staff was all attentive and accommodating. The lighting were dim around spots not occupied by guests. The music was not overwhelming to where you didn't hear the folks at your table. Very entertaining hibachi chef. Cracked a few good jokes. He also talked a lot about the infamous Japanese butter!!! We went on a Sunday mid afternoon thinking it wouldn't be too busy. Great to see the place was packed. We only had to wait 10 minutes. I had the shrimp and filet Mignon dinner. Came with salad, shrimp appetizer, veggies and soup. They were very accommodating due to our food allergies. Very much appreciated. We each had to get a take home container. We did start with edamame and crab Rangoon appetizers which probably contributed to the take home containers. Clean restaurant and restrooms. read more

This was my first visit, and unfortunately, it will also be my last. The fried rice tasted stale and was so oily that it was inedible. The crab rangoons also tasted stale, and overall it seemed like excessive oil was being used to mask food that wasn't fresh. I decided not to eat the sushi rolls because I didn't want to risk getting sick. The cleanliness was also disappointing. My shoes actually stuck to the floor, which didn't inspire much confidence in the dining experience. I could potentially look past the extremely loud and disruptive birthday celebration, the song that played every single time the door opened, and the hammered woman at the bar watching TikTok on full blast, but then my husband found a long black hair UNDER his rice while eating. After we waited an obnoxiously long time for our food at a regular table when the restaurant was not busy, we brought the hair to the server's attention, were told "sorry," and brought our check as requested. No manager, no option to rectify the situation, didn't offer us boxes because I'm sure they knew neither of us would be taking the food home, no compensation or anything. Granted we could have pushed harder about it, but after spending an hour and a lot of money to be disappointed in the meal, we just wanted to leave. I usually don't complain about things like temperature (it was cold the entire time), the noise (I understand this is the nature of the restaurant), but all of these things combined compel me to say to avoid this place like the plague. Avoid this place. Food was awful. I have eaten here before and it was decent, but this visit was very unpleasant. There was pieces of rice in the bottom of my cup of water? The meat in my steak hibachi had clearly gone bad, it tasted rancid. I involuntarily gagged and spit it out when I bit into it. The rice was swimming in oil to the point all you could taste was cooking oil. We told the manager at this point (one thing could just be bad luck or whatever, but this was clearly quality control problems) , and despite the fact I offered to pay for our meal she acted like we were lying about the food quality and asked us to leave. The menus look to be about 10 years old, and many of the lights were burning out and flickering. Didn't give the impression of a well-maintained restaurant. And I imagine it's a more common occurrence than most of us realize, but we saw a juvenile cockroach jump from beneath the grill surface to the counter adjacent to us. My girlfriend warned the other couple as the roach nearly landed in the woman's blouse on its way to the floor where it was immediately stepped on. The waitress/host was notified and shown where the roach laid on the floor. There was no acknowledgment or apology given by anyone. We left about a third of our food, and declined boxes. I paid the bill and left. We had eaten here very early in our relationship, and I wanted us to celebrate Valentine's Day here today. Worst We arrived and the sushi chef was "out at the store buying some items" so we had to wait a bit. When we finally ordered, we started with miso soup. What we got was not miso soup it was more like a beef broth with random things floating in it. Then our sushi came out and it was gummy seaweed and the veggies had a weird flavor. Found a traditional bento box finally, but what is with it that it seems most Japanese places in Columbus feature hibachi grills? Tastes that different here or does being entertained with your food just that important over more quiet dinning experience. Curious minds want to know??? For $14 got Miso soup along with salad to start. Hard to mess around with the soup, but instead of traditional ginger dressing had an onion creamy one. Talk about how to ruin a salad. Wasn't told until I complained as I was paying that they did have ginger. I asked when I ordered about ginger dressing and waitress acted like they didn't have it. White rice instead of sticky rice ball. Shrimp sashimi was the best I have had. Teriyaki shrimp was good and so was the California roll. Lunch portion still gave me a second meal, but EBS and other big eaters would have finished it all and had room for dessert. Still plan to come back again. Prices and service are fair, but had to ask for chop sticks. Will continue to search for a Japanese place that comes even close to Yotsuba - EBS is laughing at that idea right now, or Aki in Ypsilanti - which should be possible. read more

What an amazing spur of the moment time! Our chef Carlos from Venezuela hooked us up! I wish he would cook for me every day with all the fun we had. I had just got my oil changed and my mom and I hadn't ate since the morning and I did not want to go far or wait long for food. I originally decided to get the fast food version directly across the street hibachi. I looked to my left and there was ichiban so I pulled up and was about to look at pricing, then I said you know what let's just go in WHATEVER! Now from previous experiences I already know what happens and how the courses go. I ordered a large hot sake which is my go to. We ordered off the lunch menu for better pricing. I got salmon and fried rice along with steak and fried rice for my mom. I think my sake was bottomless based on how many pours I got lol. Highly recommended. In addition to our main meal we got salad for an appetizer which did not look appetizing. I could only stomach to eat half based on the look and color. The texture and taste of the dressing made me think they put it in a blender with onions. It tasted ok but looked suspicious. Now to the fun part! Our chef was so entertaining and I loved how he got the crowd participating which again is typical but he did it in a more refreshing way. I usually don't eat all my rice due to the large amount but it was the best fried rice hands down I could not stop. I always try and save something for the next day but had non leftover. The salmon was so juicy and not overcooked and the vegetables were sautéed to perfection. All I can say is that I was put in a food coma and it wasn't even 3 o'clock when I got home. This was the worst meal, service, menu, experience I've had with a restaurant in a long time. I ordered through Uber Eats. I will include pictures. I ordered the hibachi chicken, and the duck spring rolls. The picture shows traditional fried spring rolls. I received my chicken and it was dry and rubbery. It included shrimp which i am allergic to, and is not included in the description on the menu. I could not eat it. The spring rolls were, get this, made with tortilla shells. They weren't even heated or fried. I called to complain because surely they got these from another restaurant. Maybe a Mexican one? No. These are their Japanese spring rolls. Made with lettuce, some kind of meat, maybe italian dressing? and tortilla shells! Cut up in pieces! I called to complain. I got called LADY angrily after every sentence. We had dinner at this restaurant and had a $100 gift card that was given to us at Christmas, we don't live in Columbus and this was the first time we had been to Ichiban to use the gift card. Well... imagine our surprise when they told us there was a 0 balance on the gift card and flat out called me a thief and liar, the manager was extremely rude (I even had the receipt showing the $100 on the gift card) she kept crossing her arms and shaking her head no telling me I was lying, I even spoke to the owner and he wasn't that much help but finally agreed to honor the $100. This was the worst customer service I have ever seen and I will never be back and will make sure to tell everyone I know not to go to this restaurant. The waiters were all very friendly. It's brand new just opened, very nice inside. 4 hibachi tables one within a more secluded area. The sushi was really good. I recommend the Mexican roll and the Superman (it was our favorite!) The lunch hibachi prices were really good. Ginger dressing wasn't my favorite but the food was good! Our group had chicken steak and shrimp and if was all delicious! Our chef was awesome, so entertaining as he cooked our food. You should try it!! We tried it again and today and were impressed again. I'm moving my 4 star rating up to a 5. Yet again the service was great and the food was wonderful. We went for just sushi this time. Got a salad and soup on the house. Kind of hesitant to come here. Hubby chose to come here to celebrate his birthday. We sat a table by ourselves probably for a good 15-20 minutes before 3 other couples joined us. (I came here to eat, not wait for other folks to get here, ugh.) Anywho, the chef came to the table and took our orders. Even though we were the first ones there, we were the last ones to be served. AMAZING SUSHI! Ordered the Christmas roll and Eel Cucumber Roll. Tasted amazing and fresh! Fast service. Christmas roll melts in your mouth the fish is that good and surprisingly amazing ginger. Most places the ginger taste super sour. This was amazing only complaint was not enough rice on the rolls usually it's the other way around not enough fish and too much rice but I could see spots of seaweed in my roll. Came with soy and 50 cents extra for the eel sauce. In total came to $14.50. I will be ordering again but will ask for more rice on my rolls. read more

Now usually I wouldn't blame the place for this taking place... but a homeless man came in and told the workers someone was going through peoples cars. They did nothing and said nothing! I thought the food and atmosphere was ok...but not enough to pull me away from HOJ. The wife and I got their feast for 2. It was pricey, but there was a ton of food. We def didnt go home hungry. My wife, a friend and I came here last weekend for lunch and loved it. We sat at the grill. She had chicken I had steak and they were both excellent. Flavor was really good and the rice and veggies were cooked perfectly. The chef was hilarious! We also got a couple rolls of sushi, the Superman roll was our favorite. I was pleased by their prices, we spent $50 and that was for 3 meals, 2 rolls and drinks. We came again tonight for sushi and sat in the bar. The rolls were excellent again and display was perfect.
