I was brought here by Sam and was kind of overwhelmed by the mooncake and other cake selection.After a bit of browsing I got myself a regular mooncake, a twin cake and a date york cake. It seems like this place does lots of wholesale business as well as retail since all the cakes are on racks in this packed little shop and not that well presented. There's even a freezer here which has some frozen dumplings here. Very confusing. I got some but I've not tried them yet, so there's nothing to report. I have purchased different Ift bakery products from Marina supermarket in Cupertino in two separate years, and both times were before the moon cake festival. I love their pineapple cakes. However, I am utterly disappointed and disgusted by their other products. I have purchased the vegetarian green bean cake this year on 25August and found out most of the individually sealed cake have moles the next day. This rating is for the original sun cakes only and their service. I usually come here to help a friend buy suncakes and bring them to Vegas since theres nothing around him that makes these cakes. Normally I call my friend and give the phone to them so they can take the order down. The lady gave me a suncake to try once and a pineapple tart to try another time. Each of the items I've tried is actually really good. I love how fresh it is but who doesnt love fresh bakery goods???! Prices have gone up over time. I do think it is pricey but their suncakes do make great gifts or desserts for the home. Other then the price the people who work here are super nice. They even have a rewards program here so u can use it towards baked goods. I overall really like their suncakes. Prior to coming here I had never had it or heard of it before. But it isnvery fresh. Finally after hitting up three different bakeries in the SGV, this one takes the cake (pun intended). Their pineapple pastry is amazing. It's a bit smaller compared to the green bean cakes (Lv Dou peng) and it is absolutely free from any lavish decoration . Basically , it looks like soemthing you'd want to avoid . BUT WORDS OF THE WISE: don't judge a book by it's cover . My mother brought a whole bunch of these babies from LA to Phoenix and my first reaction was --whattheheck . But one bite lifts you into blissful paradise . Soft , chewy mochi blanketed around pork floss (legit Asian stuff) and in the center is a savory egg yolk . Pure perfection and oh so satisfying . A hefty $4 something for it though :/ but whatever , sometimes you just gotta splurge ! Came here on a weekday to get a nice little pastry for my staff at work. Always wanted to try out this place and used this as a reason to go! Close to work. I knew I definitely wanted to try the red bean mochi and taro mochi buns. Parking can be tough esp at the time I went bc everyone is in this plaza shopping, eating, hanging out, etc. At least it's a large parking lot! Walked in and surprised how small this place was! Was able to snag the last three red bean mochi buns and two taro buns! haha Sorry, it was me who took them all! Apparently, they are called European style red bean or taro buns... Any how, these buns have the respective filling with a nice layer of mochi in them, too! They kinda did have a variety of buns out, but I wasn't interested in those! Almost had forgotten to look at the pastries in the refrigerated display (the reason why I went there initially...kinda haha) bc I was so excited about my buns! hehe The display was more disappointing- not too many pastries in there like I had anticipated. Settled for the decent looking fruit tart (one raspberry/blackberry tart and one blueberry tart). They looked super tiny and filed with regular cream and not custard as I had hoped.. The one lady working there was super nice though! She was telling me about the different buns and what was inside them! They did seem to have a variety of Chinese moon cakes and more traditional pastries (think pineapple cake). Again, not what I was craving but I would come back to try. As I was paying, I saw a cart full of freshly baked trays of goodies! I couldn't stop drooling/staring haha next time! If you come here, please do try these European buns as they are heavenly! I think the bread is good but you could find competitive products in any other bakery on valley. The main reason that led to this low rating was the STAFF and SERVICE. The staff are pushy. I went it one time and the staff kept asking me what I wanted and if I asked her what the ingredients. She couldn't really inform me plus.. then always ask me "you want one you want one?". Stopped by here to look for a small cake and found they had only a limited selection. Lady behind the counter really tried to get me to buy their tiramisu which didn't look too appealing. Their bread selection was pretty limited too .. only thing that really seemed in stock were moon cakes. Ended up w/ 2 small slices (~$2.50 each) of mango mousse cake. Picked up a short order of candles -- overall, it did a nice job. =) Two slices were the perfect size for a small bday w/ in laws. =) ... We all liked their soft cake and smooth mango cream. =) ... overall.. OK ... but definitely not up to par with their Rowland one. Since coming back to Taiwan I've been on the hunt for the best Sun Cake in LA. I Fu Tang's came close to the famous Chia Te in Taiwan, but there was less filling and flakiness. It was also a bit expensive - about $1.50 for a small pastry! The owner was super nice though and let us try some pastries and gave us milk candy with peanuts to go. They have a good selection of meal buns, tai yang bing, and egg yolk pastries. The cashier answered all my questions about which baked goods she preferred and the fillings in the buns. I chose the taro mochi bun (thumbs up), which had a chewy mochi center and some taro paste. The tai yang bing was bigger than I'm used to, a little too sweet since the center was thicker. It was kind of expensive for $1.25 (Sheng Kee up in the Bay sells it for $0.80), and I'm used to basically all food & gas to be cheaper in SoCal. It ranks 3rd out of 3 of bakeries I've tried. Thumbs up for the cheese pineapple cake - the crust has a cheesey taste. The egg yolk pastries covered an entire shelf, and being curious as to why there were 5 varieties with gift boxes, etc., I picked one up. It was almost $3 (like a plate of dim sum), and pretty tiny. I chose the green tea paste. Ah, I was disappointed. The paste was dry, I could taste the green tea much, and the crust was nothing special. The salted yolk wasn't bad, but nothing about this pastries merits 5 varieties and a whole shelf... and definitely not a gift box. read more

There is something to be said about nostalgia. It can come from a wide variety of sources. From the way the sun sets over the ocean to the symbolic shape of a full moon representing completeness. With I Fu Tang Baker, it's from their wide array of traditional food items. From the traditional pastries which I am hugely fond of to the seasonal ethnic foods they seem to carry year round, everything that comes out of that shop reminds me of a placed I used to call home. Maybe it's the way that the nice lady greeted me in Taiwanese that reminded me of a simpler time when I took the simple (green-bean pastry) for granted and not thinking twice before scarfing it down. When I saw the price, I thought to myself, wow, a bit on the expensive side at $4.75 each. Nonetheless, I bought 3 to satisfy my hunger for my root. A small price to pay in my humble opinion. The sweetness of the green bean intertwined well with the savory flavor of the salted pork center along with the flaky crust created a good harmony. It is something I remember well and is one of the better ones of all the ethnic bakeries in the San Gabriel valley. Despite all the nice flavors, it's still not the same creaminess and clean taste from a well-known place in Tai Chung. Nonetheless, it is a close facsimile to something that only resides in my memory. I will always remember visiting my maternal family and bringing boxes and boxes of these pastries as a way to deliver good thoughts and intention. It's amazing how a piece of pastry can trigger so much memory. I Fu Tang will always be a place I am willing to come to where I can reminisce something close to my root. Especially when it's close to a traditional holiday like the Mid Autumn, Duanwu (Dragon Boat Festival), or Chinese New Year. What can I say, I like a bit of nostalgia to go with my Americanized upbringing. read more

Mung Bean Cake! One of my favorites around the Autumn Festival. Unfortunately, it was a little disappointing. It tasted a little bland, but It's not that bad. At least the stuffing part tasted pretty legit, and not overly greasy. The cake? Not great. We had a strawberry cake. The cream was fluffy and didn't taste greasy, which is a plus. But as for how long the cake had been sitting in the fridge before I bought it, who knows? The almost slices were wayyyy too...chewy? Some of the strawberries seemed all right, most of them looked and tasted like they were on the verge of rotting, way too mushy. We were in southern california for our vacation and finally got the chance to try this place out for their pineapple cakes and they were delicious and the best we ever tasted. I also tried their caramel pudding from the cooler and it was pretty good too. The people who work there are really nice and helpful as well. I only go here for 2 things: egg roll cookie and wife cake. It's not your typical egg roll at the chinese restaurant, it crumbles when you bite into it. The cookie is long and crispy and a little bit sweet. It's better when it's still warm ( I like it better from Rowland Heights store). What's a wife cake? Wife cake is a traditional chinese cake. It's round, white, and flaky on the outside and sweet and chewy inside. It's not the best wife cake but it's pretty good. read more

I usually get there coffee bread, green tea/red bean or one of the healthy walnut/cream cheese ones. Those are all slightly heavier and larger in size in the individually wrapped bread section. I came here instead of my usual Simply Splendid because I was looking for smaller size sandwich bread. You can't fit Splendid's sandwich bread in a typical sandwich ziploc. I Fu Tang, you can! In addition to the wheat sandwich bread I got, I got the raisin bread. It is a twisted round in bedded in a paper mold. The top is sprinkled with sugar. The sandwich bread is smooth and soft. The raisin bread is not as smooth though. The airy holes are large and not stringy looking. However, there are a TON of raisins! That is definitely a plus. I also tried their pineapple cakes which are pretty good because you can taste the freshness. It is a bit pricy, but the cheap ones usually use winter melon as a filler. I also eyes their Hokkaido milk cake, next visit for sure! read more

I just discovered that I Fu Tang Bakery is one of the best places for Chinese cookies in the Greater Los Angeles area. The Almond Cookies are as fresh as you can get them and two times larger than the pink boxed, mass produced Twin Dragon Almond Cookies that I grew up with. What I also like about the I Fu Tang Bakery version is the wholesomeness of the cookie. It's not as sweet and it makes you feel good when you eat them. I also like the Walnut Cookie too. It's a little denser, but the walnuts are not as pronounced in the cookie. Now, don't be surprised that it will cost you $2.99 for bag of 6 cookies. Just remember that cost shouldn't matter when want the best of the best! read more

For some reason they sell some crappy brands too but the ones in the box they actually bake and it's fresh and good. Too bad the prices keep going up. They were $1 each just a couple of years ago which was already expensive, and then $1.25, $1.35, and now it's $1.45 each. This is for a cookie less than 2 inches wide. Good place in Los Angeles to get mooncakes. I only buy mooncakes here because I feel they mirror the yi-fu tang in Taiwan in taste and quality. Mooncakes are pricier than what you get in 99 Market, but you get what you pay for. It was like $35/box of 12 and probably more for the flakey ones with eggyolk, but I bought 3 boxes.
