I have been eating at II Caffee Latte for years. It's a cute little spot on Lenox Ave. The real MVP's in this restaurant are the cooks. The kitchen is about the size of a closet and yet they're able to churn out some good food. My favorites are the Lentil soup, the Salmon Burger, and their iced coffee. I like the vibe and the music they place; usually cool jazz that is reminiscent of Harlem's past. The service can be lacking - most of the time - but I continue to come here because all of the servers have always been pleasant to me and my family. The owner, I think her name is Young, is quite special tho. Honestly, I think she is bi-polar. I have seen her be extremely sweet one moment and then completely obnoxious and condescending the next. She often berates her staff in front of ANYONE, no f*cks given!! I usually end up tipping the wait staff more anytime I see that because they really don't deserve it. I think her attitude towards her staff is really what negatively affects her workers. Instead of causing them to work better or more efficient, her constant critiquing makes her staff have low morale. After trying to patronize Barawine and having a horrific experience we stumbled upon the most quaint and wonderful place; II Cafe Latte 1! From the start we were greeted warmly and welcomed like they knew us. The food was absolutely amazing and felt home cooked. The kale soup was so good I ordered a second bowl! We also shared a bottle of Prosecco. They dropped simple syrup soaked hibiscus flowers into our glasses which was beautiful but also really tasty. After our meal the owner came to speak with us and ask about our visit and even helped us pack our leftovers. She was so friendly, funny and wonderful! One of our girlfriends was familiar with her second location that is being renovated and she shared her renovation pictures with us. The place looks awesome!!!! If you are ever in the area of either of the II Cafe Latte locations please stop in. The food, drinks and ambiance are above great expectations; something missing in this world if service. Il Caffe Latte gets 1 star for providing the most basic necessity for humanity; shelter. This is my review on the service I received at breakfast today. Let me set up the scene. Act 1. Monday 12:00pm The boiler in my apt. building breaks on a day that's 25 degrees out. My sister, roommate and I head to the cafe for coffee, breakfast, and most importantly: warmth. Act 2. Monday 12:30pm We are warmly greeted by the server who accommodates our party of 3 to a table without wait. We declared we'd be doing breakfast and coffee. It takes roughly 10min to put our order of 3 large coffees in. Outrageous wait time for coffee, but because we were enjoying the warmth, we didn't mind (too much). We got our coffee 5 minutes after. Act 3. Monday 12:50 My sister reminds me that we better put our order in for breakfast before 1:00pm as they stop serving breakfast at that time. I try waving our server down, but she was not catching my overtly subtle finger waves. (Apologies to the table who was sat next to us). Act 4. Monday 1:03pm I finally grabbed our server's attention! Server: Hi, what food would you like to order? Me: May I have the ham and Swiss croissant and add an egg to it? Server: Sorry, but our breakfast menu stops at 1:00pm and our boss is here and she doesn't like us putting breakfast orders in after 1:00pm. Me: Oh, well, we have been sitting here since 12:30 waiting to place our order but no one came over... Act 5. Monday 1:05pm Boss Lady: Sorry but our breakfast menu stops at 1:00pm Me: I understand that but we have been here since 12:30pm and no one has come to ask what we wanted. Open letter to boss lady: This was my first time attempting food at this cafe. I sometimes get a coffee from here, but don't like to as it's been chaotic and stressful inside. I didn't go to a corporate McDonalds, I went to my neighborhood's cafe. I went in with the base expectations of mediocre service, mediocre food, and warmth. I only got one of those things. This is the most awful restaurant in Harlem. Not because of the staff or cooks, but the owner is so disrespectful and doesn't give a d*** how she represents herself in this community. My most recent experience was awful, among three, she should not be allowed to own a business in Harlem. The Story: On my most recent visit, a chilly evening, I inquired about their soups of the day. A polite gentlemen advises me of the soups & as I inquire about the soup specials, the owner comes over. The Asian lady with dreadlocks, who happens to be the owner, decides to "help" by advising me that it's "summer" and soups are limited. Well, ok, that's fine...cause it's just becoming spring. I ask, can I taste the cream of portobello mushroom soup? Just to ensure I like it - response - "No we're closed". Meanwhile, there are 8 ppl sitting at tables and the door open. Ok, I get it. You don't need my local business, understood. It's an awful atmosphere & if tourists think that we, as a community are so desperate, that we would put up with this silliness & ridiculousness, it's not happening. I absolutely love this place. I go 2-3x a month for breakfast or brunch. I even pop in sometimes for an iced coffee and a cookie. The only thing that thoroughly annoys me is the $30 minimum for deliveries. This is NYC, I should be able to get delivery if I am willing to pay for it... They're pretty busy. Waitresses have bad days and are rude sometimes. No biggie." Love the atmosphere (cozy, low key), as well as the food and desserts, but one of the female servers....why does she work there?! I love this place so I don't want to stop patronizing completely, but there's something to be said about praying to not be seated in her section. Sad lol Whenever I'm here by myself or w/ friends and she serves me, whatever great mood I was in would be drained. She so unpleasant, short, and rude. It's so ridiculous (and amazing) that she still has her job! Nobody is forcing you to work there. Drawing me in with a lovely entrance surrounded by flowering potted plants, friendly orange awning and a most welcome bench for sittin, Il Cafe Latte is such a sweet neighborhood place. Great coffee, adorable set up, nice staff, just a lovely spot to stop with a friend or with a book. I've had brunch here, stopped in for coffee on my way to work, and peeked at the dinner menu more than a few times... The food has ranged from good to very good, and the prices great. I'm a Harlem native, so I support local businesses as much as I can. I've been to this location plenty of times and for the most part "settled" for the poor service because the food is really good. However, this past Sunday was the last straw! A friend of mine and I visited this location only to NOT be acknowledged or greeted at all. A server and I made eye contact plenty of times, and he just rolled his eyes and continued to serve other patrons. It was obviously packed, and not once did anyone on staff say, "it's a bit of a wait, but bear with us and we'll try to get you seated." Acknowledgement...something that is very important when it comes to quality customer service. I took it upon myself to ask the proprietor how long of a wait time did she estimate my friend and I would have. She brushed me off saying, "I don't know...we're busy!!" I'm sorry, does being busy mean that you don't try to accommodate potential patrons?? I used to work in the restaurant business many moons ago, so when I encounter an establishment with poor customer service I am utterly disappointed. The customer service is at best described as up and down - to the point of rudeness at best. From letting favorite guests take up 4 top tables - and asking guests who can just taken seats to move for their favorite patrons to sit down - I was shocked to watch how their long time staff treated others and I decided to leave. Sat afternoon, I met up at Il Caffe Latte with some friends who were near the end of their meal. So, coming in after the fact, I get that people wouldn't be jumping to serve me, however, I really got no attention whatsoever. Had to ask for a menu and NEVER got any water. My friends also sensed attitude (to me, seemed like an intense lack of enthusiasm) when taking my order. Apparently, the entire time my friends were there, our server was "unenthusiastic" and inattentive. The egg and turkey patty croissant I ordered was good, but nothing spectacular. Did arrive pretty quickly though. Despite that it had slowed down quite a bit, it still took forever and a day to get our check; had to ask twice. One of my friends was so incensed by the service, she left a note with a very meager if not non-existent tip, explaining why it was such. This was really one of my first Harlem eating experiences, so I'm not writing it off, but there was definitely much to be desired. I'm hoping it was just a bad day. read more

Closer to 3.5 stars but the service is really "ehhhhh". This is a cute, artsy spot that serves tasty, reasonably-priced food in a comfortable setting. I want to love it, I really do. But the service does need some work. I ordered a cappuccino and the "make your own omelet" with bacon, cheddar, and mushroom, which came with a very fresh and generously proportioned salad. All of the above I quite enjoyed, but my waiter never came back to check on me or ask how it was. I would have appreciated the chance to ask for some hot sauce and really don't like having to flag servers down for something they should be checking back for anyway. After my meal was done, I still had some time to kill before seeing a movie and decided to order a glass of wine. It took the waiter about five minutes to bring me a wine list and another 10 to take my drink order. This would have been completely understandable if they had been particularly busy, but this was not the case. He was standing around chatting with a barista with his back to me the entire time as I sat there looking and just...waiting. Another server had to prompt him two times to come take my order. Not a good look, dude. The Montepulciano red I ordered (very reasonable at $7.00/glass) was poured into a tiny wine goblet. I'm not a wine snob by any stretch of the imagination and I understand that this is not a wine bar. However, a "big" wine like that really needs a big glass to be enjoyed and as a result, it tasted kind of off. Not necessarily the servers' fault, but management should make proper glasses available for the wines they offer. I almost always tip 20% but on this occasion, I couldn't merit more that 16-ish %. TLDR: Good food. Good prices, but very negligent service. I wouldn't necessarily not return, but I hope they will make improvements in that area. read more

My friend Aja got the baked ziti, which personally I thought she had the best dish out of all of us. When I go back again, I'm definitely ordering the baked ziti. Out of 5 of us we all ordered an entree and drink and our total bill came out to $68, not bad. That's an average of about $13.60 per person for tasty food in a great environment. I hope this place stays around for a long time. I want to see this business do well. We walked in to the cafe and there was no one to greet us. It's a small place, but there was plenty of staff there. They all ignored us. I asked a staff member who was walking by if we could seat ourselves and she said no, that we'd need to wait for a table for two and it could be a while even though there was an empty table for 4 available. Shortly after she told us not to seat ourselves a woman by herself sat down at the empty table for four. The staff member then just walked away and we went back to being ignored. It was also very hot in the cafe like there either was no air conditioning or it wasn't working. It was a disappointing experience as we were looking forward to having breakfast there. We ended up walking out and around the corner to Amy Ruth's where there was a/c, we were greeted with a smile and seated immediately. Big difference. We were visiting from out of town. I called to make a reservation for lunch, and was not informed that it was not laptop friendly. When I arrived, the owner, older Asian lady (on Monday Oct 26 at 1:25pm) approached me while I sat on the table with a ridiculously nasty attitude saying no laptops. I was friendly when I walked in and there was no need for this person to speak to me that way. I felt slightly attacked, especially because I was being polite. I suggested to them in a friendly tone that they should probably put the no laptop information on their website or even as signage at the place. I had no issues walking out, but the person could have been friendlier given that they also have zero signage regarding laptop use. Everyone is going through a hard time during Covid and the reality For most people is working during lunch. The least the staff could do is be polite, especially since folks want to support local businesses. They can also inform people when they call about the no laptop policy when folks call for a reservation. The nasty attitude and uncalled attack was completely unnecessary. Adorable cafe with an abundant selection of cakes and pies. Although, not all cakes on the menu are available all the time it seems. We initially wanted key lime pie but was told it was still frozen so we shared warmed apple crumble with a scoop of vanilla ice cream instead. It was delicious! This small restaurant is a hidden Harlem gem for dinner. I thought it was only open for breakfast and lunch. A friend invited me to dinner and suggested II Caffe. What a delightful experience. Its cuisine is Italian. I had a delicious Caesar salad followed by chicken scampi over linguini. The scampi sauce was a perfect mix of white wine, butter, garlic, and lemon. Wonderful. My friend enjoyed chicken parmigiana with pasta marinara. Along with a glass of Malbec and homemade cherry pie, the evening was complete. Our server was efficient and friendly. I stopped in here with my best friend last night (Friday- 11/8/13) because we wanted to grab a quick bite to eat before heading to our friends condo. It was absolutely freezing and since this place was literally the first eatery we saw after getting off the 3 train we decided to give it a try. At first I thought it seemed to be a little fancy for to be doing a quick in-and-out thing, but the menu looked really good, and the place had seating available. The first thing I really like about this cafe is decor. They have a bunch of hand crafted canvases hanging up on an exposed brick wall with inspiring quotes (check my pics); they're funky and different! Next I love the ambience, the feeling I got as soon as I entered: warm and cozy. It could even be a little romantic between the dimmed lights and the tea light candles. It was toasty and comfortable, and not too crowded. They also have, what looks to be, an outdoor area in the back. It was all lit up with pretty colors, and looked like an enchanted garden. I just liked being in Cafe Latte. The atmosphere was calm and everyone was enjoying them selves. The guy who served us was cool. Very personable, and willing to answer my questions- which means he was also patient to put up with my foolishness. I was just curious as to why they staff members would be wearing tye-dye tee shirts at a European inspired cafe! I mean I thought it was pretty interesting. It actually says a lot about the place, that the manager or boss has a very laid back disposition, and wants the staff members to be comfortable, and I like that. He was very attentive, and our order came out in a few minutes of our arrival. So for the food...well this is what needs critiquing... Ok so we ordered Cajun shrimp Quesadillas to split. Now while they were delicious, along with the guac, sour cream, and salsa, they were completely drenched and leaking with oil. I mean I couldn't understand why there was soooo much grease. It was like 5x the amount of grease - per one quesadilla slice- that you would get on a slice of piZza. As I said they were very tasty, but the oil was like inevidibilty all over my hands, dripping down my wrists, and of course being consumed (a moment on the lips, a lifetime on the hips). Now for dessert we got a slice of brownie cheesecake, as suggested by the barista- he told us it was his favorite dessert, and that he actually didn't want to tell us because there weren't many slices left, and he wanted to be able to eat one at the end of his shift. I thought that was funny and imagined it to be that good. Unfortunately it wasn't. It was decent, consumable; just ok, but not great, and I'm a HUGE cheesecake fan so I was definitely disappointed. Also I have to mention that they do brunch here, and they only serve beer, wine, and champagne as far as alcoholic drinks goes. All in all I did enjoy coming here for the quick trip. I definitely want to come back because the menu offers culturally different types of food from Shrimp Parmigiana to Shrimp Creole. Lastly, I have to mention that under the tables are outlets in case our precious wonders are low on battery. That to me alone is worth half a star!!! read more

I love taking friends here to chat. The environment is very cheerful and sunny in the daytime and intimate and cash in the evening. This cute shop is perfect for a solo cup of coffee, or brunch/lunch with your buddy. For brunch I love to keep it simple with eggs and cheese on a croissant and a latte. For lunch I get the Turkey Club and for dinner I order the Penne al Pesto with shrimp. Everything is delishous and if I lived closer I'd visit more often. +1 for the cute owners. I really do love this place. Been here on more than 5 occasions. I've taken my friends, my sister, my mom and my cousins. This place has never rocked my socks off, but it feels like home, and everyone likes to come home. As Bestie has previously reviewed, the Chai Tea Latte is a very positive experience for the taste buds. The Huevos Rancheros are way intense, but also super fun. The black bean burger is great for a Saturday lunch. They also feature a great peach tea, and if I remember correctly, there is fresh avocado on the egg platter (am I making this up? if i am, it's because I love avocado, and I love il caffe latte). It's cute. It's bright and airy, even though there's not a lot of square footage, or space. The service isn't amazingly cheery, but it's reliable. It it isn't totally attentive, it's because they're letting you just be. The place reminds me of California, and I've never been to Cali (embarrassed). I give it A-. The busiest time there is in the weekends. You want to book reservations because the place is always packed in the weekend for their brunch. They have a great Brunch Menu and the French Toast is my favorite. This is a very popular place to eat and it really competes with other brunch places throughout NYC. It's not a "just Harlem" thing. The prices have gone up a little, I think but not as expensive as the restaurant across the street. Their garden burger (the green veggie burger) and black bean burger (another veggie burger) are great in taste, rich in texture, and served with fresh buns, which is always a plus. The Telapia sandwhich is always satisfying to eat! Their yuka fries gets A++ rating for their freshness, crunchiness, and taste. The owner works her ass off to make sure everyone is treated well and accommodated. There are times when I call in and place the order telling them I will be eating in, and they reserve a table for me. Yes, they are under staffed but the staff members are generally corteous and caring. Go there when they are not busy during the week and try their menu. I wish they would randomly make the brunch menu available every two weeks or so for a day so to drive more customers during weekdays. The bathroom is always clean. That's really important! Sigh....I love it here. I go with my co-worker a few times a month and I just love the atmosphere. It's quaint and cozy. The sweet potato fries are yummy and the spinach dip is addictive. But here's the thing....the service is bad. They never have enough people to serve and don't get stuck in the section with the bad waitress. You will most likely get a menu in 20 minutes and your food in 40. I have to be clear, it doesn't matter if you are the only one in the entire shop, Bad Waitress will still keep you waiting. I've come here with my boo and my parents on two separate occasions, and the space is just great. A little weird since it has a coffee-house vibe but also does table service (i.e., you have to have a waiter/waitress if you plan on sitting inside). That's okay though as the food here is pretty darn yummy (for breakfast at least!)! I've had the blueberry pancackes, the chicken/apple sausage, and the granola and yogurt. I've also seen people eat the Acapulco dish as well as simply the bagel with cream cheese and a side of eggs. The portions here are very good for the price point (particularly the granola and yogurt, which was HUGE for $7) and the time I went with my boo we paid for 4 dishes (small ones, not the main platters) and 2 coffees for $21. That's a great breakfast deal, and one that made us FULL (go Harlem!)! I like the coffee because it takes well to the milk - I think you can just come in and get coffee to go, but it's a tad annoying that you can't actually just SIT and enjoy it without above mentioned waiter/waitress.
