We visited around 3pm on Sunday, perhaps during an off-hour, but the experience left much to be desired. Upon arrival, the host told us there would be a 20-minute wait despite several empty tables. Shortly after, the shift manager said it would only be a 5-minute wait. Once seated, no one came to our table for over 10 minutes. When I finally ordered a glass of wine and a pasta dish, the wine that was poured for tasting was clearly off--both in color and taste. I requested a replacement. After waiting more than 20 minutes, my food arrived, and I could immediately tell something wasn't right by the smell. I tried one clam, and it was inedible. I honestly don't understand how the chef was comfortable sending out that dish. And this area is in the middle of eataly, the atmosphere is similar to cafeteria. read more

I love this interesting location of a restaurant. It was located in the center of the market, so you could people watch or decide to come last minute if they aren't too busy. You could choose to dress up or come casual. The service was great. Many waiters tended to us, so we would not want for anything. The focaccia bread was SOOO yummy we could have ordered 3 of those and been fine haha. The cacio e Pepe was yummy and flavorful like Parmesan, plenty of sauce. I will say the pastas were al dente (which I think is actually the norm in Italy), just not what we are used to! The texture of the Cacio e Pepe was a bit tougher than the truffle pasta my husband ordered. His food was so good and truffly! He spared some truffle to go on my pasta since they loaded it up. Waitress recommended mussels instead and they were quite pleasant. A little heavy on the butter but that's how we like it right?! Also how could you go wrong with some prosciutto and arugula on flatbread alongside some fresh burrata and mozzarella? It was nice to be able to side down and get all of these things in one place. I would have tried a pasta but I'm currently on keto. I strongly suggest you do though because they all sounded amazing! Eaten here and at the other restaurant (Terra) many times. My wife and I came for lunch today and were disappointed. I ordered one of the carbonara specials and she ordered a salad with chicken. First problem: her salad arrived long after my pasta. I was finished when she started eating. Second problem: the food quality was just OK. The guanciale served with the carbonara dish had some pieces that almost cracked a tooth. Her chicken was bone dry. When lunch for two comes in at $80, "just OK" is not OK. Eataly is always a fun experience, but I can't help feeling that at least one of the restaurants is slipping. read more

You're paying for the name and the ambiance, for sure. However! Every once in a while, I highly suggest this splurge. Let me make it easy.... Go! No doubt about it,if you like Italian-style pasta this is the place for you. In my case Sardinian blood but, let me explain. Ironically I watched a documentary about blue zones in the world last night. Those are zones where people routinely live 8-9 years longer than average and there are many more statistically, that live beyond 100. One of those is in Sardinia. So when I sat down at the beautiful bar at ll Pastaio, to my astonishment one of their prominent menu dishes was, the exact one I saw the 100 year old ladies making in Sardinia. Although, I looked at the rest of the menu, my decision was made. When the waiter came for my beverage I said unsweet ice tea. He ask if bottled was ok and I said No, give me a minute. That minute led to a fantastic glass of red wine and it wasnt even 12 noon yet! Okay, so the long Labor Day weekend is off to a great start. Those familiar with Eataly stores and restaurants won't be surprised to find out their restaurants serve some very good food. If you haven't shopped at the specialty shop for all sorts of gourmet cooking items, go. If you haven't eaten at one of the three restaurants, go. Sipping my red, talking with my neighbors, watching the cooks prepare magnificent pasta, I was digging it. Also, I have to mention, service. My waiter was an engaging young man from Paris Texas that, not only helped me expertly but also those around me. The flow of ii Pastaio is well-oiled and I plan on returning many times in the future. It was a fluke that I ended up here in the first place. What a happy accident it was and you should go on purpose. My Malloreddus Alla Campidanese was fabulous. I did not expect, when delivered to me, a final preparation, in a hollowed-out wheel of Parmigiano Reggiano was in store. Every one around me smiled in astonishment as my pasta was tempered with cheese in this showmanship manner. Worth the price of the dish itself but, wait. We had a quick lunch today, we didn't want anything special, just something simple, and fast. We got a rustic bread, the prosciutto with artichoke and salami picante. The rustic bread we got was sourdough, and although it was OK, it was not specified. We come many times to Eataly for the regula rustic bread which we love but didn't get that. The bread came with some olive oil in a plastic container, which made the place look very cheap. We asked for some vinegar and salt and pepper, and we were brought two more plastic container, one with vinegar and one with salt and pepper in it. The prosciutto was very good, but it came with half on an artichoke which probably was just picked from a can. The server made a mistake on the check; I always wonder why the mistakes are never in our favor and not the restaurants. I also visited the restrooms which were disgusting (did not expect that!). All in all, a 40 dollars bill, that felt worse than a food court experience (where you know exactly what you get). I was expecting much more from Eataly. read more

"Happy National Cheese Lovers Day!" I exclaimed to my wife. She paused, looking up at me suspiciously. "It is not," she declared. I nodded emphatically. "It is!" I said, holding up my hand. "I swear!" She didn't exactly give me a grumpy look, but as a known turophile (or lover of cheese,) I don't exactly have a good reputation when it comes for finding excuses to eat the stuff. "So, where are we going for lunch?" Now came the hard part. "Eataly," I told her. Her eyebrow went up, which I understood. We'd eaten at Eataly's Terra Cafe a year or so earlier and we'd been less than impressed. I held up a finger. "There's three restaurants at Eataly. We've only been to one so far. I'd like to go to Il Pastaio di Eataly. It's the pasta place right in the middle of the store." Now she was even more confused. "You want to go to a pasta place to eat cheese?" We'd walked through Eataly, a culinary oddity located in North Dallas' Northpark Mall. Part grocery store, winery, patisserie, and pizza place, the location also sported three restaurants: Terra, a beautiful location upstairs severing an Italian take on seasonal ingredients, La Pizza & La Pasta which is exactly like what it sounds, and Il Pastaio di Eataly, specializing in fresh made pasta. But what had attracted me wasn't the spaghetti or fettucini. Instead, when I'd been researching a way to celebrate National Cheese Lovers Day, I'd spotted something very close and dear to my heart. Burrata. For the uninitiated, Burrata is basically mozzarella cheese, but with a twist. Formed into a firm pouch which contains a soft and stringy curd and cream called stracciatella, Burrata is both softer and creamier than typical fresh mozzarella. It can be spread easily and practically melts in the mouth. And they had some! Northpark Mall was packed that afternoon and as I frustratingly navigated one full parking lot after another, I had to assume that everyone at the mall was there for the same thing. Cheese. Imagine my surprise, after finding a parking space and dragging my poor wife through packed corridors, to be seated within just a few minutes. We were placed at the bar, sitting across from the stove, bottles of wine rising in a column off to our side. My mouth watered as I watched one of the chefs placing perfectly formed balls of burrata in bowls, drizzled with olive oil! Burrata is something of a blank canvas and depending on the quality of the cheese, chefs may... or may not... elect to add to it. When my burrata arrived, it was served plain, with just a slight drizzle of olive oil and two pieces of crustini toast. In fact, it almost looked like... an appetizer. As if the chef didn't quite know how important this cheese was to me! Hesitatingly, knowing that the burrata I'd had a few months before in Terra had been... challenging to like... I took a taste. And fell in love. Fresh. Oh goodness. Sweet. Salty. The crunch of the crustini, the smooth creaminess of the burrata! All of it combined perfectly! Of course, I tried it with my serving of Eataly's un-grilled "Rustic" Bread and found it just as good. "Mmmm," my wife hummed, sampling some of my cheese. I nodded in complete agreement as we talked the beauty of burrata. Suddenly, Italy was much, much closer. But I wasn't done. A second "appetizer" was set in front of me. I'd ordered it on a whim, mostly because I'd never heard of it before. "Bruschetta con Ricotta Miele e Tartufo." It was a long name and come on... truffle honey? Whipped Calabro Ricotta? How can a cheese lover turn something like that down? Sweet and creamy, I was astonished by the flavor of the whipped Calabro Ricotta. Most of us are familiar with the gritty texture we find when its spooned out of those plastic tubs we buy at the grocery store and then make lasagna. But this... che bello! I gave half to my wife and her mouth curled up in a smile. "That's almost a dessert!" As I dug into my cheese, my wife's Trenette Al Pesto Genovese arrived. A thick spaghetti like pasta covered in a pesto made of basil, pine nuts, Pecorino cheese, and Parmigiano Reggiano - the king of cheese itself - I had to admit that it looked scrumptious. "Would you like some? There's cheese on it," she teased. I nodded happily. Delicious. With hints of garlic and olive oil and with the pesto light and perfect, I could easily taste the familiar and deep tanginess and nutty flavors of the Pecorino and Parmigiano Reggiano. I smiled. I finished my cheese as my wife emptied her glass of wine and we sat back, full and very pleased. Il Pastaio di Eataly had more than satisfied my desire for cheese. It had broadened my horizons. It had shown me that if your Burrata was super fresh and super delicious, you didn't need all the additives to make it work. Still, I frowned. "What's wrong?" My wife asked, concerned. "The whipped ricotta," I whispered. She laughed. "It was the star of the show, wasn't it?" I nodded. It was indeed. read more

I always enjoy eating at the Eataly restaurants just based on the quality of ingredients alone (I also love shopping there, but that's beside the point). At il pastaio, you are getting freshly made pasta with quality ingredients that you can take straight home after enjoying your meal. I've eaten here twice so far. I really enjoyed their dinner special, 3 courses for 29 dollars which includes a salad, pasta entree, and a large serving of tiramisu. This is a fantastic deal. If you want the more premium choices (bolognese, burrata, etc) they do charge an extra 6-8$. I still think this is reasonable considering the quality of the ingredients. The pasta portion is sizeable, and the flavors are simple but delicious. I do prefer this over Terra, which I think is largely overpriced, and depending on the situation I would pick this over La pizza and La pasta as it's more casual and good for a quick meal after or during a long day of shopping at north park. read more
