I've had Indian food across the United States and in many different parts of India itself. I wasn't expecting my favorite to remain a restaurant on Melrose after all that traveling, but here we are. Nothing else has topped it. Anarkali is woven into the story of my wife and me. One of our earliest dates was here. Soon it became a weekly tradition, then twice a week. We were scraping together every dollar we could to buy our first house, but Anarkali always made the budget. Some things are necessities! The saag paneer is my forever favorite: pillowy-soft cubes of paneer in a velvety spinach gravy that's earthy, aromatic, and bursting with layers of spice. Every bite feels comforting and vibrant at the same time. The chicken tikka masala is just as memorable. Tender pieces of marinated chicken in a luscious tomato-based sauce that's tangy, smoky, creamy, and packed with layers of flavor. We order everything at the HOT spice level, which leaves us with a blissful spice buzz endorphin rush that lingers long after the meal is over. Throw in buttered naan, samosas, fragrant basmati rice, the carrot soup, and finish with their cool, creamy rice pudding, and you've got one of my favorite meals OF ALL TIME. The owner and staff have always treated us with genuine warmth. After so many years, that's become as much a part of the experience as the food. We moved away from Los Angeles years ago, but every trip back starts the same way: we find time for Anarkali. Some traditions are too good to give up.

In addition to biryani, this South Asian spot makes hearty Pakistani dishes with bold spices and an emphasis on tender meat. Hyderabadi Lamb Biryani: This biryani is a magical blend of basmati rice, spices, onions, ghee, and lamb shank. The soft and luscious lamb meat easily flakes off the giant bone. The separate ingredients are beautifully layered together so the flavors are distinct and complementary. The warm spices provide great depth of flavor. On the side is a cool and creamy mint chutney. Nihari: Large tender beef shanks are slowly braised in a vibrant spice blend with onions, garlic, and ghee. The soft gelatinous connective tissue throughout the succulent meat is delicious coated in the rich and meaty stew. Tear chunks off the large chewy naan and form pockets filled with beef and gravy. Top it with raw onions, cilantro, ginger slivers, and a squeeze of lemon juice. The condiment plate here didn't have any chili peppers, but there was a little heat in the dish. Chicken Curry: Large chunks of boneless chicken thighs and potatoes are stewed in onions, tomatoes, and spices. The curry is thick and flavorful. Ordering: The friendly owner is happy to explain the dishes and offer recommendations. After you order your main dishes, you can grab beverages from the fridge or samosas from the case. When you're done eating, you pay at the register.

This place is sus and I really did not like the service…read more We came here for a quick dinner at 7 pm (there was no one else inside). We ordered Chicken Tikka Masala, Lamb Korma and Butter Cheese Naan. They came out with Chicken Tikka Masala and Chicken Korma (did not notice this right away as it's all covered in sauce). I told the waitress that we were just waiting on the naan and she said that it's coming. She then proceeded to ask what kind of naan we want (so they weren't working on it). Once we started eating, we quickly realized that none of the dishes were lamb. We told our waitress and she was like oh no I'll bring you a lamb one. She didn't take the chicken one away or mention anything about paying for it. The food was pretty good overall so maybe a lot of good reviews are from delivery. When we were done, we asked for to go containers. They were gross and had white flecks/oily stuff all over them (just thinking about people that did delivery and had their food packed in those containers already...gross). They brought us different containers that were fine. The chef then came out and said he charged for the Chicken Korma (that we did not order) but didn't charge tax on it. Excuse me? First of all, if you even wanted to try to charge for that, you should've said something upfront. Second of all, you should never try to charge a customer for a mistake made by the kitchen. Will not return.
