None other than Jason Kerr himself came to my rescue on a Friday evening when I came home, flushed the toilet, went downstairs to do some laundry, and noticed that the 4" main waste pipe from the toilets, sinks, and showers had burst open! I called at about 3pm on that Friday afternoon, and Mr. Kerr was done by 10:30pm with a rather large job, since he also replaced an additional 4" stack pipe that was definitely going to go soon. He also noticed a loose connection in the shower drainpipe and fixed that, even though it wasn't part of the original plan. I am totally impressed with his professionalism and fast work for such a long job. I was originally planning on being without a shower or toilet for a day after my last job by another plumber who has since retired. Luckily, I was wrong this time. We have used intelligent plumbing twice for emergencies. Both times they were out here within two hours and the first emergency they could not fix, but they told us how to go about getting a new hot water heater through our home warranty program.The second emergency was our toilets backing up and they came quickly and immediately fix them. Since we are trying to sell the house they gave us some options on whether we put in a new toilets or not depending on if we want to upgrade the bathrooms. I would highly recommend this plumbing company since we've had such a wonderful luck with them and they have always been pleasant nice and efficient. From the outset, Jason was very thorough and helpful. He went out of his way to ensure that we were taken care of, even going so far as to provide temporary equipment to us while waiting for our custom system to be built. He was communicative, detailed and genuinely cared about our situation. Rather than just putting a bandage on the issue, he did the extra work required to ensure that we would be in good shape for years to come. Jason even endured weeks of back and forth with our pump manufacturer, Tramco. As a sidenote, Tramco has horrible lead times and customer service issues. Thankfully for most homeowners, they rarely are in the consideration set for consumer applications. That said, their product does seem to be of very high quality. In the end, we cannot recommend Jason and Intelligent more highly. They are a top-tier contractor and will be our first to call for all future work. A+! read more

I was doing some of my own plumbing (replacing a leaky saddle valve with a proper valve tee'd off from the line) for a refrigerator ice maker. When I tried to turn my main water back on, nothing. It turns out it was a old gate valve that had broken shut. This was beyond my comfort level to fix so I called Intelligent early the next morning. I got a ball park estimate for the fix which helped me decide it was a good enough deal to have them come out and fix it. Matt was out a few hours later. We got the curbside water shut off and he fixed the problem for a good price in a short time. Matt is a really good guy. He's one of those guys smart enough and confident enough that he's not intimidated to give out plumbing advice. Important for someone like me. He's easy going and likes talking to people. He's pretty observant, too, so I imagine if you were antisocial he'd figure just to leave you alone. Everything I want say, has already been said, but I want to recognize how phenomenal this family owned business is. Neal arrived promptly and even gave me a courtesy call to let me know that he was running a bit ahead of schedule. Once he arrived in my home, I felt immediately at ease and comfortable. As a woman who often has to take care of of the home maintenance issues while my husband is at work, it is great when you feel totally secure with workers in your house. I called Intelligent Plumbing to fix an outdoor faucet that had burst over the winter. While Neal was in my basement checking the interior pipes, he noticed that my sump pumps had some debris by them and were of substandard quality. Replacing them has been on the short list since we moved in last year, but we had not gotten around to it yet. To make a long story a little bit shorter, Neal educated me on sump pumps and back up batteries/pumps and had everything fixed and installed in about 3 hours. Called to have someone come out and look at a leak coming from our upstairs toilet. We were able to get an appointment for the next day and the service specialist Matt was even early to the appointment time quoted. He was straightforward with everything, didn't try to sell us on any unnecessary repairs and was very nice and helpful. We ended up choosing to replace our toilet and he drove out of his way to make sure we ended up with the toilet that fit our needs. Intelligent Service will attempt to rip you off. This company just quoted me a pipe repair at nearly 4x the rate of other vendors ($1700 vs avg $450) If I'm being generous in how much the materials would cost and how long the job would take, it would have been about $115 per hour labor rate for these guys. I appreciate the skill and knowledge that a trained plumber has, but $115 per hour is beyond insulting to pay for any job. I feel like because I have already paid them $250 for the diagnosis (problem was in the wall, so not immediately visible), they are quoting me well above reasonable rates, thinking I'm already hooked in. It's really too bad because the tech seemed like a good guy and I would have been happy to have them do the work if it wasn't for this extortion attempt. Do not waste your time getting a quote from these guys. I've already lost $250 to them and will not be losing any more. read more

Intelligent Service Plumbing was recently at my house for a drainage issue. When I called, they (as well as two other plumbing companies) refused to provide me with a basic quote over the phone - a service call and unclogging a shower drain. I was told that one of their techs would come to my home, access the situation, and provide a quote free of charge at that time. The tech arrived on time and was very accommodating. The problem was assessed and I was presented with a quote of $382.57! Needless to say, I was extremely shocked. Not wanting to go through the whole process again of looking for another plumber, and feeling a bit pressured, I begrudgingly went ahead and signed to have the work done. The tech was at my house approximately thirty minutes, with the actual rodding out taking only fifteen. I had a coupon but the bill was still an outrageous $357.37! They will tell you they're a premium company, fully insured, hi-tech using the best equipment, most qualified plumbers on staff, etc, etc, etc. However, they don't work on an hourly basis, but on a pre-determined fixed cost depending on the problem. It became very obvious to me why they won't quote over the phone. They want to get the plumber at your house right in front of you, which to me is a compromising position to be in. It's harder to say no to a quote over the phone than to say no with the plumber standing right in front of you. You want the job done, and you're at a disadvantage as still having a plumbing issue. The tech is holding all the cards. The whole process is very sly and calculated to what I call taking unfair advantage of the customer. A month later, I had another unrelated drain problem. This time I called Green Tech in Park Ridge. The owner answered the phone, was very professional, and after going over the problem with him, he quoted $218.00. The tech arrived on time, also very professional, unclogged the drain and presented a bill for $218.00. Like the tech from Intelligent, he was at my home for thirty minutes with half the time rodding out the drain. Do the math, same job, same time frame, and both very qualified and highly rated companies. Big difference is that one does the work at a fair quoted price, the other an unfair quoted price. Beware of and stay away from this outfit and any plumbing company that won't provide an estimate or quote over the phone. They DO NOT have your best financial interests in mind. read more

This company is not upfront about how long a job will take, that's why they use the "flat fee" instead of an hourly rate. That way they can charge excessive amounts of money for small jobs that really do not take much time. We had an ejector pump that stopped working simply because the switch that detected a full basin no longer worked. The job took the plumber about 45 mins to install a new switch. Total cost to us: $653! The breakdown: (1) Switch cost $193, (2) Labor for 45 mins - a whopping $460! This is a dishonest way to scam customers out of money. I strongly recommend that you avoid this company for any plumbing work. They also charge $39 just to give you a quote. Ridiculous. read more

I'm calling around to get quotes for replacing the sewer line from the stack to the septic tank. This is a major amount of work and I want to get competitive bids for the job. I called Intelligent and the person that answered was very friendly up until the point that he told me it would be $39 for someone to come out and provide an estimate. Unfortunately, I will not pay someone to try and get my business. It tells you a little bit about the company if they don't want to take the time to provide an estimate and get your business. Either they are so busy that they don't have the time or they loose too many jobs because they are not competitive and they want to try and recoup the cost of loosing a bid. After many years of service we were recently told that we were placed on a "do not service list" and the company was unable to provide any explanation regarding why this occurred. Despite having paid all of our bills in full we were denied service when we needed it most. This may seem like an odd review for some, but I am giving them five stars for NOT coming out to my house and letting me know the City of Chicago was responsible for my problem. I called on a weekend, not being able to get the water on in the new (to us) house we just bought in the Logan Square area of Chicago. Neil called me back and went over the problem with me on the phone, telling me he would be happy to come out but that weekend rates would apply and if I could wait until Monday they would put me on the schedule. On Monday morning I got a call from him saying they had talked it over when they got in the office and that what I described was probably the responsibility of the Water Department and I should call them first and see if I could get it fixed for free. I was fully prepared to pay what was necessary to get a plumber out there(moving in with a baby and no water would be no fun), even at weekend rates, but Neil talked me down and then out of his services. I'm a carpenter and have spent a lot of time on construction sites, but most of plumbing is still black magic to me. In that situation, an honest evaluation is the the most important thing you can pay for, and these guys cemented my future business by spending some time with me on the phone and talking me out of hiring them. read more

They updated me before Brent's stop as to the timeline and if it would still be in the window detailed. Brent detailed my issue with my water heater and in this case option to repair was nut in my cards.
