My sewer backed up on a Sunday evening. I went on Intelligent Plumbing's website and entered a service request at approximately 11:00pm Sunday. They open at 7:00am and when I called at 6:59am, they had already read my email and had me on the list for service that morning. I got a head's up call from Matt at around 8:00am that he would be by in about an hour and a half. He showed up around 9:15 and was very pleasant and professional. He took a look and explained what he needed to do and showed me a price before starting work. Also, I am in the military, and they offered me a 10% discount in addition to cleaning up the nasty mess and rooting from inside the basement at no additional charge. Matt finished in about 2 hours and showed me the clear line via an external access point, which he eventually found on the side of the house that I did not realize I had. Total cost was a flat rate of $514.59. I got another quote from Vanguard for $265 for the first 2 hours and $150 per additional hour, however they were not available until Friday (4 days later). Great work! Had a broken sewer line outside of my foundation. Sump pump was running constantly and about to be overrun because the sewer line was leaking into the drain tile. Called and spoke to Colleen. She sent Neal out and he diagnosed the problem and was very informative...explaining every step along the way what was wrong and how to fix it. By the end of the next day, they had secured a city permit, dug up the ground where the sewer line had been and fixed the problem. Then they also cleaned out the line to the street that looked like it hadn't been rotted out in decades! The estimate for the third party service was rather high, so I was able to find a direct provided. I also had a leaky outdoor faucet which was replaced. There is no doubt in my mind that Intelligent Plumbing is a good plumber! However, in my case, integrity is also required in order to be considered a good business! I am shocked by the Cavalier attitude expressed in their final email to me. Not even an apology was given me since Mel did come out to my house, wasted my time, talked with Jason and assured me that the job would be handled by Intelligent Plumbing. A Proposal and numerous emails followed and dates and times were established. I agreed to having Intelligent Plumbing remodel the bathroom before even knowing what they would charge since I had work satisfactorily done by them previously! The dismissive attitude of an oral agreement. a proposal, and repeated emails that would be respected and honored by most fair businesses was repulsive to an American such as myself who dislikes the fact that money talks. I do not see how a promise to me to do business could not somehow be accommodated! While they are great plumbers; integrity is not their strong suit1 BTW, they need to return to me the $39.00, for the proposal, that they took from me, under false pretenses. . This is the email they sent me that reneged on their promise to do the work! This was received coincidentally just after I asked them for their license, proof of insurance and workmen's compensation and written indication that the project would take no longer than three days (as orally promised) and that the water would only be turned off in the applicable bathroom so that we could continue to live in our home (as promised!): "Late yesterday afternoon we got news that we were awarded a large contract for a Dialysis Clinic. A contract like this is huge for a small family run business like us. With that said, we are not going to be able to move forward with the proposal for your home due to the time frame starting at the clinic." - Intelligent Plumbing. I called them for a clogged bathtub. Unfortunately, the tech found that the problem (which he showed me on camera) was a near collapsed 70 year old cast iron pipe. He got enough done immediately so we could use our shower and toilet, and returned the next day to finish the job, which included replacing a lot of old and damaged pipe. 3 years ago when I purchased my home, I was in desperate need of a new hot water heater. I contacted Kerr Mechanical because they were a local company and I was referred due to their great work. Jason came out with my new Bradford White hot water heater and the installation was great! They took away the old one and all was good. Last week, my hot water heater suffered a small leak under the tank and I needed help...I contacted Jason again regarding the issue and he came out immediately! We found that the tank needed to be replaced and was still under warranty. Jason got me a brand new Bradford White heater and installed it in under 10 minutes!!! All 3 experiences were as excellent as they can be. The technicians that I worked with (Neil, Eric, Matt) were all very professional, thorough, and knowledgeable. Matt came out to do an estimate for work we are planning, which went fine. At the end of our discussion, he asked for a $39.00 as a trip fee. This was a surprise to us. It was never mentioned when we scheduled the appointment, nor is it called out on the website. This seems misleading to me. I question this company's pricing practices. After charging $127 to "investigate" a shower leak, they quoted $429 to replace a valve based on prices they had in a manual. When asked how much of the cost was parts vs. labor, I was advised that 1/2 the cost was for the part (actual labor time was 10 minutes). With one phone call I found the part would cost $30 if it were not under warranty. Intelligent Plumbing misrepresented that a $30 part would cost over $200. They also represented that they charge more for changing a highend manufacturer's valve than to change a common manufacturer's valve. read more

I've used Intelligent Plumbing for years now. They are professional, very clean and get the job done. I find their prices fair and straight forward. I don't have to wait around for them as they always provide a narrow window of when they will arrive. They have fixed a water heater, hose bib, and shower faucet. They have also installed a RO water dispenser. On more than one occasion, I've not been charged for the service call because the fix was so easy (air flow was blocked at water heater exhaust so water heater was shutting off) or because it was on a part that they installed (wear hole in plastic tube leading to RO dispenser). we recently had a problem with an ejector pump. it broke right after numerous failed sump pumps crashed throughout chicagoland, due to severe rains and flooding the night before. we were in no emergency, and in no hurry, all things considered. my husband called for matt, while we were en route to the library. matt, called us right back, asked if someone would be home now, that he was finishing a job, nearby, and could come in half an hour. so we immediately changed plans. he came, assessed the problem correctly, had the parts in the truck, could do the job right away. did so. estimated hour and a half. worked conscientiously. done in one hour. always takes the time afterwards, to teach me of what happened or broke down with the system, why, etc. i always feel competent in reporting back to my husband.how kind of him to teach me of sysem's mechanics, something totally new to me, being that i'm a woman... it was his second visit. he replaced our disposall, too. not inexpensive, but well worth it, getting the job done right the first time. a more competent , and courteous person,you couldn't ask for. i tipped him, and i rarely do this on house calls. i guess i rarely feel thrilled with the service...except in this case. make sure you ask for matt, out of the palatine office. read more

I needed my garbage disposal replaced a couple of weeks ago. When the installer came, he didn't have a replacement disposal on his truck. There is little room under my sink, and while I'm sure he wanted to upgrade me to another model, he couldn't. The one it was replaced with is $105 at Home Depot. He got one, and he replaced it in an hour, and the total cost to me was $576.76. They didn't break down anything at all on their invoice explaining the charges. I knew this company was expensive, but this is such an "over the top" price to pay for replacing a low end garbage disposal. I called to tell them that I was upset and felt taken advantage of, and one of the ladies spoke to me at length about it. She said she didn't want to lose my business, and she'd talk to the owner to see what they could do to "make this right". That's the last I've heard from them. I used to trust Intelligent and their services, but not anymore. And, never again. This sucker won't be suckered again by them. read more

After finding water leaking all over my basement from the hot water heater and freaking out, Neal called back within 15 minutes of my husband placing the call. I contacted the Intelligent Plumber around 7/13/2014 for a leak in the kitchen of a condo I rent out. I was not present during repairs. Jason came out and assessed the leak as a lowboy water heater needing replacement. I agreed to the quoted price of $1,100. In hind sight a few plumbers told me a more appropriate price would be around $700-$800 dollars. I needed to get this fixed for the tenant so I went ahead with the work. Jason removed the low boy water heater and upon removal discovered the leak most likely was not from the water heater but from a drain that the water heater sat over. He said rodding the drain would be an additional $200. I agreed with the rodding and also agreed to continue putting a new water heater in since the old one sat in water for who knows how long. From my tenants point of view Jason was professional and it appeared the job was done correct. Jason did say if the drain backs up again I would have a similar situation. A little more than a month later the tenant calls and complains of a leak in the same area. This time I came out and viewed the area and noticed the new water heater is not sitting flush on the floor. Part of it is on tile and the other part is on the concrete floor. Not sure why Jason put it in this way but hopefully it does not cause an issue. It is a slight angle. I have pictures that shows this. After viewing the area I contacted the association because the drain is from a common pipe. They sent out a plumber who rodded the drain. Again, about a month later I got a call of another leak. This time I contacted the Intelligent Plumber and asked to have Jason contact me. I simply wanted to find out what my options are for this drain. I think I am going to cap it and take my chances that it backs up in another area of the home. I have provided the tenant with a drain screen for hair in the shower and the most recent plumber gave them tips on what they can and can not put down the garbage disposal. The big take away from my experience with the Intelligent Plumber is that they are over priced, installed the water tank on a slight angle, and do not have the courtesy to have the plumber Jason call me back after I spent $1,300 dollars on a lowboy water heater and rodding. read more
