We had dinner the first night, a friend and I went back for drinks, and lunch the next day. First night the restaurant was busy and we unfortunately didn't get our order in until after 2 big tables had ordered. It worked out though as we had drinks and an appetizer and the kids had a book and a tablet for amusement. Our server was Ashley and she was fantastic! Super happy we were assigned to her section as she made our experience a great one when it might not have been so otherwise. We had an awkward moment where 3 D.E.N. grilled cheeses were delivered to the table. One was to have egg added and the other two had bacon added. Pretty easy...well he was thoroughly confused. He thought they all had egg ("Clearly this is egg!" to both us and our server when she rushed over to see what was up) but in the end we got exactly what was ordered....the egg he was seeing was oodles of gooey cheese. I wished I could have tasted the onion jam more. I'm a cheeseaholic but the cheeses really did overpower the sandwich. Fries were good...beer battered as were the sweet potato fries. Drinks were excellent and very fast service to the table! My friend and I met up at the bar later that evening to finish what we started earlier...rum and cokes and Lavender Fields's. Yum! There was some great people watching (inducing both laughter and eyerolls). The bartenders and servers again were on fire as it was quite busy. Lunch the next day wasn't the best experience. Our server appeared to be somewhat new but we got through it. I got the D.E.N. burger which was great but too much for me for lunch. Part of our order was forgotten or maybe not taken but that was rectified quickly. We tried to split the bill at the end...down the middle with two cards but there server said she was unable to do that. I just put it on mine and we figured it out later. All in all we liked it here. I'm not sure I'd end up here if I wasn't staying at the Marriott and yet several of the employees were standouts which is reason enough to pop in when I'm in the area!

The sauce is normally very creamy- but this night it was more on the oily side which was not pleasing to see on the plate. We also noticed that this time around, we received more bread with the pasta; in which we normally get two pieces but had gotten four this night. The other item we had ordered is the California burger. Great portion sizing. Had the option of fries or in house made chips- and went with the fries instead. The burger itself was pretty good, I would say an average burger at best. Our waiter was tentative and checked in on us whenever we were low on water or needed any extra condiments.

From the moment we walked in, no one was warm, no one even welcomed us, we had a reservation and still waited to be seated. The host was not friendly. Our waiter didn't even introduce themselves and it took us 30 minutes to get water after asking. Our drinks came out all at separate times, I had to remind him for my mom's prebiotic soda, which he served in the can, no glass and didn't open it. Our meals all came out at different times as well. Overall no one had a sense of urgency, no one seemed to prioritize a good dining experience, and it was so disappointing because again the food and ambience was there. Please set a standard for your staff and either provide additional training or find people who thrive in customer service.

Back before it was sold, my dad would come in, sit at the table, and instantly a Manhattan was placed in front of him. That wonderful, old-type service. The new owners have been around for a while and did a wonderful refresh on the property. They kept a lot of the household favorites on the menu -- mine being the shucked and sautéed crab legs. Extremely decadent and pricey, but well worth it. Anytime you're wanting to come for a birthday or a special event, I highly recommend this dish. If you're coming by yourself or just as a table of two, try getting a table in the bar. It's intimate and cozy, and probably only seats 20 people. I live out of state now, but I make this a priority whenever I'm back in beautiful Washington State. Definitely a Tacoma institution.

Today was supposed to be a quick, light stop after work: shrimp cocktail, a couple drinks, and some time in the old Harbor Lights bar. Walking in, I was immediately reminded of one of my biggest frustrations with this space. Yes, it's small--but the outdated tables and chairs make it far too easy for people to block the walkways. And when those walkways are filled with loud, inappropriate, "stuck-in-1976" commentary from intoxicated older men acting like they're still in their 20s, it makes navigating the room even more uncomfortable. At one point, we were stuck sitting there listening to them loudly joke about having female urologists and proctologists--one word: GROSS. Speaking up doesn't feel like a safe or worthwhile option--it just escalates things. The bar could absolutely keep its charm while still evolving into a more comfortable, modern, and inclusive space. Then there's the menu situation--multiple menus stacked in front of you like a paper shuffle. It's unnecessary and could easily be streamlined. Now, the drinks... this is where things really fell off. Harbor Lights used to be known for strong drinks--that reputation feels long gone. I ordered a vodka-based drink and it went down like juice--no taste, no kick, nothing. When I asked for a double on the second round, the bartender laughed and said all their drinks are doubles and that they don't measure, claiming there was 2 1/2 oz of liquor in it. We watched him make it: no measuring, just a free pour over ice, stopping well short of the top, then filling it with rhubarb-strawberry purée. When it arrived, it felt more dropped on the table than served. I gave it a fair shot--a big sip--and again... no vodka taste whatsoever. No burn, no effect. I know my liquor, and this didn't add up. It really makes you question what's actually being poured. And then... the shrimp cocktail. How do you mess this up? This was the one thing I could always count on. It's always been unique and consistently good--but this time? Way too much horseradish. Completely threw off the balance. I still ate it, but it was not the same experience at all. Overall, this visit was disappointing. Between the uncomfortable atmosphere, lackluster drinks, and a once-reliable favorite falling short, Harbor Lights just isn't what it used to be.

I am not sure if the party of 5 and our bill got swapped or what happened. EDIT: Called them and they immediately credited back the money with no hassle. Changing to 4 star. I'm not sure what that was supposed to mean, but it definitely didn't explain why our food was cold. (party of 6) This place used to be worth every penny, but now it feels like they're cutting corners while charging the same prices or higher. We used to recommend it to everyone, but after this visit, we'll be looking for a new crawfish spot. Suggestions? Has anyone else noticed the same thing, or did we just catch them on an off day?
