I've heard some high regards for the Ishkabibble's steak for awhile, and this past weekend I was finally able to get my hands on one. Of all the cheesesteaks I have had in Philly, and given Ishkabibble's reputation, this was an underwhelming experience. The biggest deterrent is the meat quality -- dry. The steak size is a good portion and they supply a hefty amount of meat, but it lacked that moist texture that makes so many stand-out Philly cheesesteaks great. However, all the fixings were adequate. The provolone cheese was evenly distributed and the onions tasted good. I also added green peppers for a bit more texture, but I don't think it's essential for me going forward. With South Street rival, Jim's, a few doors down, I can't picture myself leaning toward Ishkabibble's, but for those who enjoy it, that's fine, too - it's not horrible by any stretch of the means. If your like me attempting to cross another cheesesteak off the bucket list, Ishkabibble's is a worthy destination, but no where near the top. read more

I love a chicken cheesesteak but this wasn't it. The chicken is not like others, it's chicken breast cut in cubes. I got mine for travel and the bread was a little stale the chicken wasn't great. This place was a small little place on a street. However parking may be hard to find. I was lucky enough to find a parallel parking. You may need to pay for parking as well. Inside there is about five tall chairs you can sit on. Other than that you can't really eat inside. I order the philly cheese steak and it was delish. It's about $10 but it's really huge. I could only finish half of it. I was able to save some for later and it was still good. They also have fries which are crunchy the way I like it. It's not those big and soggy kinds. These are so good that you don't need any other sauce with it. My friends and I killed it. So you might want to ask for more fries. Don't go to Genos or Jims. Ishkabibble's was a site my girlfriend took us to eat for our first Philly when we were knee deep in our first night in Philadelphia cheese steak. So what did I think? We decided to start off with one of their original chicken steaks and split a Chicken cheese steak with provolone ($10) This thing came out stuffed full of chopped grilled chicken, and was topped with melted cheese. The sandwich at first bite was really dry i'm afraid. With that said, they do have some condiments to help out. Ketchup and some oil later, and the sandwich was much less dry, but not my favorite this trip. There's a few stools and bar counters for sitting but that's about it in this small area. Customer service was nice and pretty informative too. Operating since 1979, I really wanted to like ishkabibble's more, and maybe if I got one of their beef Philly's i'd have been blown away. So, I was in town for some athletic events and waited until after they were over before in on some authentic Philly Cheesesteaks. Ishkabibble's was recommended by a few friends and had a walk full of notable/famous fans. It's located on the historic South Street where Jim's Steaks is within view. I'm setting the scene to tell you that...I thought it was just ok. It's definitely got a local vibe, no frills, counter seating and service. The steak itself didn't really have much of a flavor that would have me seeking more. I'll follow the advice of another friend; I'll be willing to give it another shot. Man was in Philly with the Mrs. and had a great time. Eat tons of Philly food. All of it was great. She's from there so she knew all the great locations to go to. And this was one of the spots that has the best Philly cheesesteaks. So, I had an Ishka Cheesesteak. So the different part of this one is that it has mushrooms and pizza sauce on it. I like to try different things but wasn't expecting this. Wow it was great. Never in my life did I think this would taste as good as it did. I like the order on the street or sit at the bar style seating. Only thing is there isn't much seats inside. But the food was cooked fresh to order and pretty darn fast. We also go an order of cheese fries. Now that's my only problem...but nothing killer. But we had to request more cheese because the lady making them was stingy with the cheese. This surpassed any expectation I had-the meat was flavorful, the cheese mixed in with the meat and created this lovely meat and cheese melody. Who would've thought this hole in the wall would be slanging one of the better cheesesteaks I had while on my Philly cheesesteak tour. Located on a super cool part of town, South Street, this place needs to not be slept on. With the inside being pretty small in size, we opted for the takeout window as the few counter top chairs were taken. The man behind the counter was very helpful and patient in giving us his recommendations while we pondered over the menu longer than I'm sure he wanted us to. We ordered provolone with onions and mayo and WOW! Juicy. Flavorful. Seasoned perfectly. Crisp. Did I say juicy?! Compared to some of the other cheesesteaks we had around town, Ishkabibble's is in its own category..by far. Top 3 in my opinion. Maybe it was the part where they asked if we wanted salt and pepper. Something as simple as s&p took it to that next level. When in Philly... Gotta try a cheesesteak. To be fair, it's not my preferred cuisine, so I may not be the best judge for the cheesesteak, but for what it is (shredded beef mixed with vegetables in a somewhat soggy bun), it was certainly enjoyable. The place was highly recommended by the local Hilton staff! The sandwich was huge, I appreciated that it didn't taste overly greasy, and even though I carried it back to the hotel for 30 minutes, it was still hot when I unwrapped it. I paired it with champagne (because why not), and definitely got a lot of uuuh and aaahs from my coworkers. I definitely got the tourist experience I wanted, and was not disappointed. Quick bite was what we were looking for and this place was excellent for the roaming out-of-towner. Fulfilled all the hype surrounding the cheesesteaks in Philly, and was so good that I ended up eating a third of my girlfriends as well. Food was deserving of 5/5 but I typically reserve the 5th star for day-making service (no complaints about service here). What would a trip to Philly be like if you didn't have a cheesesteak. I read up on the raves and reviews and in the end took my friend and native Philadelphian's advice on Ishakabibble. My friend Erica and I were on an adventure and we must have walked about two miles sightseeing before getting to South Street for our cheesesteaks. I frequently see this come up as a great choice for cheesesteaks. Down the block from the absurd line snaking around the corner at Jim's, it looks like an even more attractive option. Like most of the other great cheesesteak places, this is a very small spot with limited counter seating. They also have a walk-up window though, where you can more easily place your order and take it go quickly. Given that the sign out front and the menu touted that they had the original Chicken Cheesesteak, and that I was eating enough red meat in two days for a month, I decided to try the Chicken version for the first time ($9). I got it like a good Cheesesteak should be, with fried onions and American cheese, and it was really excellent, overflowing with a ton of juicy, chopped up cubes of chicken. This is a great option for Cheesesteaks in the area. Drive to in Philadelphia for an overnight gig & my better half suggested we get food here because of limited offering at the hotel we had booked & the restaurant there would not open until late in the evening. The Service here was A+ as I never looked at the beef offering as I don't eat beef & just asked for a iska cheesesteak, they did it with beef, they happily did it over. The Iska Cheesesteak with chicken was not impressive to me, they used chicken breast & it was, in my opinion, not very moist & not that flavorful, I also ordered a crab cake sandwich which was really reasonable priced, taste was good, especially for the price but it could have used some kind of sauce but I, had asked first no cheese. My Lady got a beef cheesesteak & said it was really good & I trust her judgement. It's a takeout spot with 3 seats max but prep area seem very clean. Stopped by on our road trip because we were dying of hunger. The service was very fast, food potions were pretty good, and the people were nice. I enjoyed that we can see them cooking in front of us. We decided to get a chicken cheese steak which was decent, however we noticed that it was not the typical thin flat meat that they would use for a regular red meat. Instead it was like rotisserie or chicken breast which was upsetting. Also, if you like your steaks really cheesy, recommend to ask for some extra as there was not too much in it. read more

In my long search for the best Philly cheesesteak I overlooked this place because it is not famous like some overrated others. Also they have a funny name that did not espouse confidence in their cheesesteak making ability. I was wrong. Ishkabibble's is the truth. It is what your dreams imagine a great cheesesteak should taste like. After a lifetime of pursuing the perfect cheesesteak like a monomaniacal Captain Ahab on his whaling ship Pequod while chasing the white whale Moby Dick, I figured out that the real key to a great cheesesteak is the cook. The staff here gets it right. They are efficient, clean, and work with you to customize your order the way you want it. No fake exasperation over not ordering the "right way" like saying with onions instead of just "wit." That whole production at other places takes a lot longer than just saying what you actually want. The cooks on the line and the staff are some of the nicest, customer focused folks in the city. So great were they that I posted their pictures! I ordered the cheesesteak wit onions, provolone, and with Wiz. I added mayonnaise and ketchup. The bread is perfectly baked to be soft but sturdy enough not to get soggy. The meat was juicy and full of beef flavor. The saltiness of the beef and Wiz was cut by the sweetness of the caramelized chopped onions. The entire thing will have you in a food ecstasy. This sandwich is at the apex of cheesesteaks in a city renowned for them. I tried the chicken cheesesteak and it was just as good as the beef. It is made with rough chopped whole chicken breast. Cooked to perfection it is not dry at all and has great taste. I did not add Wiz, just white American cheese, onions, Italian seasoning, mayo, and ketchup. Simply beautiful like a Dr. J drive and dunk. You will be torn between the chicken and the beef versions. This is America people and you are in its birthplace...you do not have to choose, just get both. The accouterments are also outstanding. The fries are hands down the best of any cheesesteak place in the city. If you are going to chow down within five minutes of getting your order, get the cheese fries. You can thank me later. Any longer and the Wiz gets too cold and gummy, same for the sandwich. I never tried to reheat the items, so caveat emptor with all that. Perhaps the best, most surprising menu item is also the most simple: a cup of the "Gremlin." It is just a mix of half lemonade and half grape drink. The lemonade is tart and the grape drink is sweet. Together they are like Stacy Lattisaw and Johnny Gill "A Perfect Combination" (great song by the way). Just order it; trust this Yelp Elite and others. The lushes amongst you will drink half and add liquor to the void. Would that I could bottle and sell it worldwide. I would be like the early 1990s Cool C, living the glamorous life (another great song)!!! Get on down to South Street and hit that Ishkabibble's "jawn" (for the squares, jawn is defined as: a word used to refer to a thing, place, person, or event that one need not or cannot give a specific name to. Etymology traced to inner city Philadelphia). Those other cheesesteak jawns are like Clubber Lang and Ivan Drago (two great Rocky Sequel villains) to Ishkabibble's Rocky and young Creed!!! I've recently began trying other cheesesteak spots other than Ishkabibbles and I'm not sure what happened.. but ishkabibbles is just not the same and definately not the best cheesesteak spot in Philly or worth the hype. The steak was dry and the meat was very thick and not shaved how the steak is supposed to be. Because the meat was dry, it lacked flavor and I needed to add more salt and pepper to the steak unfortunately. I also asked for ketchup and they put the put the lightest spread of ketchup ever on the dry bread they also serve, to the point where I literally could not taste the ketchup. I had to go home and add more ketchup to my cheesesteak smh. The only thing that was good was the cheese whiz as they are very generous with the amount of cheese they put on the steaks.
