Mofongo lechon ( pork) ( a bit salty for my liking ) but Mofongo was The best part!

Food was great, service was wonderful, it's family owned restaurant small mama papa spot and it's what you will see when you go to Puerto Rico for meals which is what I came in for .. ( be prepared to eat semi-dark place, there isn't a whole lot of light , and tables are not cloth table clothes but plastic vinyl table cloths) place is open till 7 pm week days and till 9 pm Friday/Saturday I believe. We will be back again and bring kids to experience Puerto Rican food cause it was good !

Delicious food. Friendly staff. What more could you ask for! The lechon is my go to and always an alcapurria or bacalaitos. My husband loves their chuletas and papa rellena. Can't keep us away!!

The mofongo was to die for. I really enjoyed the broth and chicharron de pollo was outstanding

It's like I've gone on a plane to Puerto Rico and landed!!! This spot is legit! Ay dio mio! El Mofongo! El tipico!!! Los tostones! The food is amazing!! I am hard to convince to give a 5 star rating but this was a easy one.

Mofongo plantain and garlic mash. So delicious!

Named after the native Coqui frog of Puerto Rico, Isla del Coqui has been open since 2009 and it is the only Puerto Rican restaurant in my area. It is a small, sparsely-decorated, hole-in-the-wall type restaurant that had not changed much since my first visit there in 2019. The place was adorned with pretty murals and mirror paintings, the walls colored an attractive tropical green. There was a Puerto Rican flag on display, along with a map of the island. A shelf behind the bar area bore souvenirs of Puerto Rico. On the TV, English-language Christian music videos were being shown. But what was lacking in atmosphere, it more than made up in the quality and tastiness of the food. Since there was no beer or wine served at this restaurant, for my beverage, I ordered the Caribbean Cherry juice. Also known as Acerola, the drink had a tangy, satisfying and refreshing flavor. It is my favorite beverage there. For my first visit, in 2019, I had ordered the El Viejo San Juan Appetizer Platter. This included an Alcapurria stuffed yuca fritter, a Papa Rellena stuffed potato, a Pastele Green Banana Tamale, a Bacalaito saltfish fritter and a Beef Empanada. As this had been my first real introduction to Puerto Rican food, I found that each item was very tasty, especially the Empanada. The beef filling was savory and very well-seasoned. Even the crust was delicious! For my second visit, I sampled the Cuajito Pork Stomach Stew. As I have always considered tripe to be one of my favorite dishes, this Puerto Rican version did not disappoint. It was hearty and satisfying and could have stood alone as a meal. I then had the Papa Rellena Stuffed Potato. This was a deep-fried ball of mashed potatoes, filled with seasoned ground beef. Both the potatoes and the meat filling were bursting with flavor. My next appetizer was the Chicharron de Pollo con Tostones. This consisted of tender and succulent deep-fried chunks of chicken, topped with raw onions and sided with smashed, deep-fried green plantains. To accompany my food, I was provided with a bottle of their fiery, house-made hot sauce, called Pique Coqui. For my first main course, I ordered the El Tipico Authentic Puerto Rican Meal. This was a plate of luscious and flavorful Pernil Roast Pork topped with rings of raw onion, a side of seasoned rice, studded with Gandules Pigeon Peas and a tasty Pasteles Tamale of spiced and mashed green plantains, mixed with pork chunks and cooked in a banana leaf wrapping. My second main course was a Puerto Rican Classic of West African origin called Mofongo. Mofongo is a mixture of green plantains and garlic, seasoned with salt. This savory mash came sided with chicken broth that served as a gravy to moisten the dish. I ordered my Mofongo with Camarones al Criollo, a stew of big, meaty shrimp in a spicy, tomato-based Creole sauce. I truly enjoyed my second outing at Isla del Coqui. There is so much more to explore on the menu, and I am hungry to try more.

I love this place! Peeps are friendly and have a great atmosphere to eat and absorb the puertorrican culture. It's family run and they make you feel at home!! Ask for today's special!!!

Open arriving at the parking lot and seeing how deserted the place was, I had a feeling in my gut we had chosen the wrong spot. Came in and we're sat right away. There was only another couple dining in at that time, on a Saturday at 6:30pm. Against my better judgement, we sat down and browsed the menu. We decided to order and make the best of our evening. The menu had several dishes that didn't sound like a bad idea. Service was great but then again, it was just us. Lol. We dined in for approximately an hour and within that time, another couple came in. Appetizers and courses came out very quickly. We had the yuca empanadas for our appetizer. They were really greasy but not horrible. For our main course, I had the mofongo stuffed with churrasco and a side of tostones, my husband had the fried pork chunks with white rice and red beans. My churrasco was a bit fatty and chewy and the mofongo was on the dryer side. We both ordered cocktails, they were both very heavy on the alcohol but not too bad. I'm almost certain we will not be visiting again but I'm glad we checked them off of our list.

I asked for part of my steak to be put back on the grill, but more than 20 minutes later nothing came back. At that point I figured they had simply forgotten about it. Ironically, the piece of steak I sent back finally showed up right when I had to ask the manager for the bill and told him the waitress had gone missing. And that She never brought the steak back. I was really hoping for a great experience given the restaurant's rating above 4 stars, but it definitely didn't live up to that. The service was absolutely poor. More like a 1.5 is what I rate it.

We ended up sitting at a high top and our waitress suggested that I try either carne asada from the Mexican menu or Vaca Frita from the Cuban menu. I love me some carne asada but I was intrigued but this 'fried shredded beef' that was marinated in mole and cooked in a hot skillet until crispy. She suggested sweet plantains to go with it and white rice with beans which is traditional Cuban (instead of yellow rice). IT WAS FABULOUS! It was crispy on the outside and juicy. The mole was flavorful but not spicy and i appreciated that the meat was not dripping in sauce. My dinner date ordered chicken tamales which were seasoned in a Cuban style with yellow rice. She is used to Mexican tamales but said these really hit the spot! The only blemish on the nice was her second margarita which was the cucumber one which she didn't like at all. Curious and hungry, we decided to check it out. The restaurant is located in a small shopping plaza, and I have to admit, the dark tinted windows made the place seem a little questionable at first glance. I actually got out of the car to peek inside before committing. Once I saw several people dining and enjoying themselves, we decided to give it a shot. Inside, the restaurant was tastefully decorated with a charming Dominican countryside flair. Even the bathrooms had a playful sense of humor that added character to the place. Service started off promptly, and we were seated right away with menus in hand. However, while browsing the menu, I quickly realized that despite the restaurant's name, there were very limited Puerto Rican options aside from the different varieties of mofongo. The menu was overwhelmingly Dominican cuisine, which was a bit disappointing since we specifically came looking for Puerto Rican dishes. We ordered the empanada de cangrejo to start, which was flavorful and freshly made. We also shared the mofongo with masitas fritas, and I will say the food itself was well seasoned, hearty, and satisfying. Unfortunately, the service did not match the quality of the food. Our waitress lacked warmth and wasn't particularly attentive. What stood out the most was that she didn't know what sorullos or alcapurrias were, which caught me completely off guard considering we were searching for Puerto Rican cuisine. Overall, the food was enjoyable, but the experience didn't fully meet our expectations. If you're looking for Dominican-style mofongo dishes, you may enjoy it. But if you're specifically craving traditional Puerto Rican cuisine, this may not quite hit the mark.

Luckily, we do speak some Spanish as the staff was very limited in English. Neither of us was very hungry so having looked at the menu in advance, we thought we'd get some soup or something small. Turned out that on Sundays, they don't have their regular chicken soup available. However, they do have a Sunday special of Hen Soup (gallina), so that's what I ordered. My husband ordered a chicken sandwich. The soup came in a large bowl. There was ample chicken with various vegetables in it -- some of which I didn't know what they were. I could identify the cabbage and I think a lot of large chunks of either yucca or some sort of potato. The broth was good -- made better when I added some lime juice to it. In addition to the soup, alongside was served a very plain and bland arepa and a hunk of fresh avocado. They also had a small cup of vinegary chopped onions and peppers on the plate. My husband's sandwich turned out to be more like a chicken salad sandwich with a mix of chicken, mayo, and avocado mashed together. He said it was okay. To go, he got a small container of their passion fruit mousse dessert. He ate that later at home. He said that was very good. We were here once many, many years ago.
