I had an awful experience at the Islands at the Tustin Marketplace. My dad and I went for lunch, and the hostess declined to give us a table inside even though I asked for one and could see there were tables available. She offered my dad and me the bar or patio. Since my dad is older, I opted for a standard table in the patio even thought it was hot. The hostess never told the bartender we were out in the patio so we sat in the heat waiting but got no service. I went inside to ask again for a table, and we were finally seated inside and served. In retrospect, we should have just left as it seemed like we were refused service just for being us. I talked to Allen, the manager but he didn't seem very concerned about what happened. His offer to take something off my bill after I had paid seemed disingenuous. Money wasn't going to change the fact that we weren't welcomed there. I will never return to that place. read more

I've always been a fan of Islands growing up in Irvine. I used to always go to the Barranca location, but the TMP location is much closer to my mom's when I visit. I always get the same exact thing at Islands and my meal always comes out just the way I like it, so it is very, very consistent! I order the Maui burger and get it substituted with a veggie patty, a wheat bun, and always get the french fries. The french fries here are always perfectly crisp...and endless so you can order as much as you want! The veggie patty here is really good. It's much better compared to other places because it basically tastes like real food, not some obviously frozen patty. On our recent trip to Islands, my boyfriend ordered their nachos and those were very good as well. Definitely big enough for two people to share. read more

Islands you used to be a solid 4 with me. Even when you changed your menu and reduced the amount of meat in your burger patty. It wasn't a problem since your flavor was still there and after all America has an obesity problem. But this year, you've crossed the line. Historically, Island was the OG driving the ranch with fries craze in the 80s. If you see a drop in attendance.... It's because of the bad ranch. Your ranch drove the separate cheese fries order as the combo was that good.... It was a "have to" order. Out of all chains, you are the only restaurant I had ordered an appetizer consistently at. Now that that's gone, people won't order and would want fries with their burger. Decision to remove fries from burger now make the value of burger alone not worth it, since part of alure of burger was also the ranch with it. I'm guessing an MBA decided to look at your metrics to make decision to remove free fries and change ranch recipe to save costs, but they failed to engage customers and watched data alone without connecting the dots. read more

Visited on a Thursday evening. Even though it looked quite busy we got seated fairly quickly. This was my very first visit after hearing about the burger chain for quite some time. I didn't really expect many veggie options in the menu but I was pleased to see that many burgers can be substituted with a veggie patty. And they also have the impossible burger. We got the big wave with veggie patty and sandpiper which is chicken. The sandpiper was decent but felt little bland compared to the big wave which tasted great. I don't know whether it was the sauce or the seasoning that did the trick but I couldn't care less. Definitely will try other options in the menu. read more

I work 10 hours a day, managing folks in a hot, humid warehouse. I love stopping by local watering holes on my way home for an ice cold blue mountain Coors Light. Today I decided to stop by Islands for an icy blue brew and a burger. After a long day at work, I really needed to unwind. Armando, my server, was incredible. My food came out hot and fast (AYOO), and he made sure my pint glass never ran dry. After my meal, I decided to order a cocktail from Carlos, the bartender. I LOVE ISLANDS! I just tried it for the first time and it was incredible. The cheese fries were the best I have ever had, you need to try them with their ranch dressing. We had a few people help us out and they were awesome. I don't often leave reviews but the service is the main reason I had to leave one. Kenzie was our server and she was THE BEST! She was helpful but also funny and so nice. I brought my kids with me and she made them feel so cool, which really added to the experience. The team seems like they are all best friends. Kim and Victor helped us out as well and made the kids and I laugh when they brought out our food. We went here for lunch starving. I've been to Islands before but one in Porter Ranch so having a good experience there with food and service made me want to go again. Our server was kind but not as attentive as I'd hoped. I ordered the Longboarder and when I got my meal, it was another burger (I forgot the name). But I took a bite and it was good but had mustard instead of the Thousand Island sauce in the Longboarder. I waited almost 10 minutes to tell someone. There was another server helping out guests and I called out and looked visibly perplexed but nobody came to me. Finally my original server caught my eye and I told her about the confusion. She was nice about it so I definitely appreciate that. It took another 10-15 for my order to come out so by then, my appetite was pretty much gone. What did kind of suck was how the actual burger I ordered didn't taste that good. It just didn't seem to have any flavor. Which is weird because the only difference between this one and the first one I mistakingly got was sauce. The fries were also really burnt. But I was a bit disappointed with my meal the second time around. If the service was a tad bit better and my food wasn't burnt, I would've rated higher. Sat down in the patio. Got all settled. Guy sitting at table in front of me put his dirty BARE feet up on a chair (very relaxing, I know) which gave me a view of the bottom of his feet. Not exactly what I want to see when I am eating. Told the waitress I would pay for our sodas since we hadn't ordered yet and told her the reason why we weren't going to stay ($7.00). She said she saw and recognized he was doing that but that there wasn't anything she could do about it. How can a restaurant not tell it's customers to not put their feet - especially BARE feet - up on their furniture?!?! How could a server still charge for sodas knowing the reason the guest is leaving? I couldn't leave more than 1 star for the way this was handled by the restaurant staff. Islands is a longtime favorite restaurant of mine, going back to my early college days. I'm a creature of habit and pretty much always order the same thing: veggie patty Hawaiian burger, fries with ranch. This particular day that I had lunch here, it was a little off. My wife and I and family after seeing our nephew play T-Ball wanted to go somewhere to eat, and someone said, Steven, I said who is Steven, he is the waiter at Islands on Jamboree and I remembered we went there last Saturday and really had a wonderful experience, so I said yes lets go there, we did and as my wife and I were driving, I said how nice it would be if we could have Steven as our waiter, so guess what? When my wife and I got there, we parked the car and walked towards the entrance and there was Steven walking almost at the same time as we did, so I hollered hey Steven, he turned and said yes, we told him we met him last Saturday and he remembered, this was really special, (I am 70 and my wife is 68) we chatted and went inside and found that the family had already taken a large table, and guess what? Steven once again was our waiter so we all chatted with him made our orders, and ordered our drinks, he came and went as though he was part of the family!!! We got our food, and our drinks and once again the food was delicious and the drinks were great even the kids were happy... We were there quite a while, as one of the family flew down with his beautiful girlfriend from San Francisco so we had some catching up to do, and as usual Steven made sure that our dining experience was wonderful and it was. We strongly recommend this place not only because the food is great, but the Staff, in this case Steven welcomes you as though you are family, and he is very attentive to our pleasurable eating experience. I'm almost ashamed to say I ate here and that I was very impressed with the burgers. Not bad for a chain. PARKING: It's on the right side of the marketplace when you're coming down Jamboree towards east Irvine/Tustin and is before Bryan, I believe. It may seem like a dead plaza but there are people inside. ATMOSPHERE: It's called a sports bar because they have TVs and a bar, which is nice for people who wan to watch sports or drink. There are also booths available and in the bar area high stools. I can see tons of families coming here with their kids and big groups who want somewhere fast, easy and decent to eat. FOOD: I got the Point Break burger, which has gruyere and bleu cheese, caramelized onions and bacon spread, lettuce and tomato. Each burger comes with fries but you can opt to get onion rings, salad etc. Only the sweet potato fries are extra. Get the white bun! Every other time I came here I got the wheat bun but the white bun almost reminded me of in n out. It's toasted on the bottom and slightly buttery with a soft and fluffy top. SO GOOD! The meat itself wasn't bad, they call it pink throughout but it's really more on the done side, but still juicy. My burger was overall pretty good with the flavor I wanted. Fries are disappointing, they are kind of like wannabe steak fries with the skin still on them. Slightly crunchy but nothing to get excited over. They are bottomless though! Took my family to this location last night and was told there be about a 30 minute wait after waiting for almost 40 minutes the host said they only had two cooks tonight and it will be at least another 25 minutes before we can sit down. He then told all of us that were outside the restaurant waiting that once we sat down it would be 30 minutes before we got a meal served to us. This was 620 on a Friday night how does a restaurant chain this large only have two cooks?. We were told that the kitchen was so backed up that there was no way anybody was getting a meal anytime soon and that the screen where the orders appeared was entirely read meeting they had surpassed their 13 minutes to serve a meal.. All of us waiting left, 5-6 more that came while we were waiting didn't stay!!! So how much money did you save by not having more cooks on staff? I'm guessing nowhere near the amount of business that you lost by everybody leaving. And just the people I saw not stay and those of us that had our names in and left was 10 separate families. Whoever the manager is at this restaurant is absolutely horrible at his or her job. Surprisingly poor tasting burger...the Kilauea which is described as a "jalapeno and black pepper crusted burger, pepper jack cheese, chipotle aioli and seasond red onion strings." It came under seasoned and the onion strings made the burger pretty greasy. To get some satisfaction I looked for seasoning. Islands had its own secret seasoning which is pretty much salt. A small sprinkle livened up the greasy burger. Overall the meal was partially saved by the very attentive service. It was really noticeable how hard they were upselling. I'd say a little too much up sell (Drinks ? Appetizers? Soup? More fries?) This place is very new to Culver and the decor is modern high ceiling, light colors with touches of a Hawaiian theme. There's a lot of dining space and a regular bar area for watching TV or getting the happy hour deals. Seems to be popular with families. With other places that are better nearby i don't think we'll come back unless friends want to come here. read more

My daughter wanted to go here at 8PM on a Friday night after we sold Girl Scout cookies for a couple hours in the cold. I told her it would be busy & she was fine with the wait. We showed up, restaurant was packed, waiting area was packed & they said it would be a 20+ minute wait. Not a problem. I watched the teams quickly clear tables and were seated within five minutes. I watched out server hit three tables with different requests before coming to take our order. Our chips & salsa were delivered by another employee in minutes. The manager dropped off my soda & a water a minute later and said my daughters milkshake was on its way, as it arrived from another guy in a minute. Then our fries came from another employee minutes later, our burgers a few minutes later. Stopped in for lunch. It's been quite a while since we've eaten at an Islands. We left wondering why. First off the hostess was very friendly. Our server Alison quickly came to greet us. She was armed with a tablet, so we literally had our drinks before she left the table. This was genius. We recently spent time in Vancouver and all restaurants have handhelds. They take it one step further where they can swipe your card and sign. So simple and time efficient. This store is so clean too. We both had tacos, mine were the grilled fish tacos and my husband had the Longshore, chicken tacos. We both got the coleslaw as our side and a side of guacamole. The tacos were delicious and I LOVED the slaw. It's a vinegar base rather than mayonnaise. Alison was so helpful with the menu and just all around pleasant. You can tell she enjoys her job and she takes pride in her abilities. We don't live near this store but we will be looking up the one nearest to us because of this great experience. Okay not all Islands are created equal. Stopped at the one on Brookhurst and Ellis. We sat at the bar and after we placed our order the bartender Cameron disappeared. We asked for chips and salsa, when we ordered and they never came. If he had come back over we would have reminded him but he didn't. Service was bad.
