We did as we were asked only to stand there as the man working pickup was busy calling out orders. Ivar's... I don't understand the hype about this place. Perhaps there isn't that much hype, and I only think there's hype because I have two friends who LOVE Ivar's and love talking about their Fish and Chips. One day, I finally decided to try Ivar's, and dropped by this location to order the $11.30 5-Piece Fish and Chips (Alaska True Cod). I ordered at the outside counter instead of going inside the dine-in Salmon House restaurant. At first, I was thinking: "5 pieces for $11.30 sounds like a great deal!" However, when I later opened up my to-go order, each piece was about the size of 1.5 chicken nuggets. :( The meal smelled pretty good though, and after dipping my first piece into some complimentary tartar sauce and taking that first bite, my taste buds sent one and only one thought to my mind: "This tastes almost exactly like a McDonald's Filet-o-Fish." Now, I regret to write that I grew up eating a decent amount of Filet-o-Fish sandwiches (as well as Big Macs and Chicken Nuggets haha...), and I further regret to write that I still remember how they taste. But still, after all the "hype", Ivar's Fish and Chips didn't taste that much different than a Filet-o-Fish (which don't me wrong, used to taste good, but now that I'm older seems to taste just alright). I've been coming to this location for a very long time but haven't been here for the last 3 years. Ordered fish and chips and a salmon and chips. Both orders were extremely dry and overcooked and the french fries had zero flavor. Thank goodness for the tarter sauce which saved the day. read more

They make some of the best fish and chips in the city. I also love the clam strips. Apparently they're owned by the same ppl as the seafood restaurant right next door in the same building. Hello, During this COVID-19 catastrophy, after coming down here from Alaska to start my own welding business I found myself desperately searching for a reasonable place to park my newly acquired trailer and Welding truck given the "stayput" guidelines outlined by the city of Seattle during these strange times. I conveniently found this vacant lot adjacent to this electrical hub and walking distance from my friend Joe who is literally my only friend and resource down here. At lunch us two and one other went to Ivar's for lunch and spent well over 80$ there and must admit it wasn't bad for fast food. A few hours later an employee trekked over to my camper to inform me I was not welcome on Ivar's property and was to pack up promptly and leave if I didn't want to get towed. I understand the importance of not letting trailers and vagrants buildup on one's property. But to be in the eye of the storm of this covid-19 epidemic and for Ivar's to see my occupation of this parking lot hundreds of feet from their storefront as being a nuisance and have absolutely no compassion or empathy for the situation I am in is pretty appalling. I could understand a place like Walmart or McDonald's following protocol and not giving a s*** about simple people in compromised situations but Ivar's makes very strong claims to be a small business that supports the community and the common working man, and given that I can hardly imagine a more conflicting stance then to deny someone a parking spot as refuge during a national emergency. 2/5 stars, no cocktail sauce. read more

So.... let's just say after after I pay seven dollars to Uber eats plus an additional five dollars to tip my delivery driver I was very upset when I receive my order which I asked for extra lemon I asked for no french fries substitute for coleslaw with my salmon order my salmon fish and chips order was supposed to have no fries instead substitute with coleslaw I receive no fries no coleslaw. In addition the salmon was deep-fried too long and was dry not moist at all on my side salad I asked for extra croutons and extra dressing. I received one dressing and a very very small of miniature croutons that look like fish food so now I'm sitting here wondering how am I going to eat my salad and my shrimp appetizer with no silverware thank you for failing me after I spent $40 stuck at work and can't leave I really hope they make this right because obviously nobody is reading the delivery directions and then someone else on the line isn't doing their job adding things like silverware and extra dressings. Let me add they added Newman's Fraser salad dressing to my side salad. I expect this from Wendy's but not from Ivar's if I was eating in I would have fresh dressing. I had a terrible experience here in Spring, 2016. I was badly food poisoned after eating here. The symptoms came on violently within 1-2 hours of my meal, which I ate at about 9pm, and the vomiting went on past 4am. It got to the point where I was just vomiting stomach acid over and over and couldn't even keep water down. I became very weak and had to go to the doctor - I mean, nothing like this has happened to me before or since. It was awful. I believe it may have actually been the cole slaw that was contaminated, but I had fish and chips as well. I'm sure it was Ivars because I hadn't eaten for many hours before that, and the only other meal I had had was at another place earlier that day and shared with a friend who didn't get sick. I became really nauseated within an hour, and within two I was literally on my knees on the bathroom floor. My doctor said it was a "textbook case" of really bad food poisoning, probably brought on by the fish or slaw (not the fries). I reported the incident on a food poisoning website to alert other customers. It was one of the most frightening health experiences ever, and I am still dealing with some of the ramifications of it. Now, obviously people eat at Ivars all the time and are just fine - I was one of them before this happened. But I would be careful about eating slaw there after this - especially at the fish bar in the evening! And I urge Ivars to review their sanitary procedures if they haven't already. I think it is the best chowder in Wa, I believe it is the chain with head restaurant in Seattle waterfront. I've been in waterfront and Bothell location, everything is very good. My first experience here was good. The staff were very friendly and the food was really good. I'm always a fan of fish and chips but I'm always afraid of the oil sitting in my stomach but their fish was not greasy at all. If you are looking for fish in Seattle, you have 3 options. The first is to get the really cheap fish, probably in the form of fish in chips. You can get this at almost any chain in Seattle which includes Ivar's Fish Bar. There's also Emerald City Fish in Chips, which my friends and I REALLY WANTED to go to, but it was all the way near the airport. You can also get the expensive fish at places like Taylor Shellfish Oyster Bay or at any of the waterfront restaurants. But, the most recommended place to get fish is literally at any market, where you can then go home and cook it. Since we didn't want to spend any more money in the city and since we didn't have cookware, we decided to go with the first option and check out one of the MANY Ivar's Fish Bars around the city. Since we were in Fremont, we spotted the oldest Ivar's Fish Bar in town - the one near the water and very close walking distance from the Fremont neighborhood and Gas Works Park. It's apparently been here since the 30s?! This fish bar is pretty much a togo order stand where you pickup your junk food and eat it inside. There's also the salmon house next door, but that's the more expensive option for fish. If you need to go to the bathroom, I recommend using the one in there since it's nice. This Ivar's Fish Bar has only a few noteworthy options on the menu. Of course if you come here you should check out the fish in chips. I ordered the basic cod fish in chips with a side of the salmon chowder, supposedly "the best" salmon chowder around. Food came out pretty quickly and I was pretty satisfied with the portion size. For around $15 (which is a tad bit expensive for lunch but because the chowder was $$$), I got a decent sized plate that filled me up. -Fish in chips (10/10 for junk, fast food). First off, the fried fish was really good! The breading wasn't too excessive and the fish was delicious. It tasted really well with the tartar sauce. I also liked the fries too. They weren't overcooked nor were they limp. -Salmon chowder (6/10). The chowder was very underwhelming. I had to dig around just to find bits of salmon and the chowder was very salty. I think I would've been happy just trying to red chowder. Don't expect chowder on the level of Pike Place Chowder, because it's not. However, do give it a try if you want something warm. This was a wonderful place to sit and watch the water. There was a ton of boat traffic and we enjoyed seeing so much activity. My sister and I split an order of the fried clams and they were very juicy and delicious. The perfect amount of breading, and the vinegar was great! We REALLY appreciated that there was a water cooler in front of the restaurant, so we could get cold refills without having to wait in line and ask. Saw from Munchies video about this same place and wanted to try it out myself. Sadly the fried fish was more or less on par with other fellow Yelpers. I was still very hesitant to coming here as I was having trouble finding a place to eat fish and chips. It was pretty mediocre and the fish meat was so thin that you barely can taste the fish. I tried both the Alaska cod and the Halibut. The amount of fish served was pretty disappointing for the price and the fish was so thin that it was easy to over fry the fish and rendering it rather dry. The fries were cooked well and the tartar sauce was pretty decent but the main which is the deep fried fish was unsatisfactory. Tarik the guy who featured this place in the Munchies video has lost his credentials in my mind on what is good to eat because there are much better options for deep fried fish. Tragedy! Clam strips were awful. When nobody ahead of me ordered them, I should have been tipped off, but having moved away several years ago, Ivar's clam strips were on my list. They were mostly breading. No actual clams were killed in the production of this dish. The fries were fine, the cole slaw nice, but we left most of the 'clams' uneaten. Of course, sitting on the dock is wonderful. I shall return on my next visit, but not for the clams. read more

Ivar's has always been a staple for me in the U-district. I've been coming here for years, and they always go above and beyond. I've gotten the cod and chips, clam and chips, chowder, bread bowls, salad, cornbread... all amazing, fresh and delicious. One time, we forgot something on the counter (we were getting take-out) and they ran it out to our car right before we left!!! The service is amazing and we love eating here. Ivar's Fish Bar came highly recommended to me by a friend, and after visiting myself I can understand why. The fish bar area itself is simply a walk up and order kitchen area outside of the Salmon House restaurant. (Instructions are even helpfully posted if you're confused about the ordering process.) Since I'm a basic tourist, I opted for the classic fish n chips. Each person behind the counter I spoke to was polite, efficient, and helpful. My order took slightly longer than a friend's, and yet, I did not complain because a)that wait time was barely 5 minutes, and b) freshly fried food is a huge win. Iced lemon water is available for freee, as well as malt vinegar and lemon wedges if you feel so inclined (I did). The actual meal itself was 4 pieces of flaky fresh cod with a light coating served over a bed of somewhat crispy fries. Each morsel was just so succulent and worth the wait in traffic we experienced after leaving. You can sit by the water too, and that just makes the food taste better in my opinion. After dining at the restaurant several times I wanted to give the fish bar a try. Wow! Deep fried salmon & fries. I recommend the garlic vinegar for the salmon which is great for dipping. The proper Ivar's restaurant is great. At least the one in Seattle. I only ate at this fish bar in Wallingford. "Ate" isn't exactly accurate as I tried one bite each of the salmon, corn bread, rice, and coleslaw in the salmon dinner. It was terrible. My friends were shoveling that fried crap in their mouth's like it was a delicacy, so perhaps it's just me.
