After reading the reviews I was salivating to get to Izakaya An. Took my mother there, instead of her go to, to celebrate her 91st bday with my daughter, son and daughter in law. Right from the start I could see that it was going to be a long evening. The server, there was only one, was extremely stressed. He must have been new at the job as he was constantly stopping and starting, and very unorganized and constantly forgetting things,, i,e., dishes, etc. I felt bad for him and thought that someone in the kitchen should come out and help him. There were only three seated tables including us, but he just couldn't get it together. We ordered appetizers but they took quite a while, one was forgotten and they didn't come out at the same time. Our dinner order didn't arrive at the same time, , multiple orders on the same plate without an explanation, another item forgotten and an incorrect item delivered. Taking into account that the server was new, I thought we were very patient though I doubt I will be returning. read more

A neighborhood gem serving very good japanese small plates. unfortunately the space is small too so it can get full real quick. The squid appetizer was well seasoned and properly grilled. Kara age were nice big pieces lightly breaded with a hint of spice. Sashimi was very fresh, we had yellow tail and Salmon and wish we had more. read more

Had a great dinner. Menu is wonderful and food was excellent. Had the Japanese fried chicken, cucumber salad, sashimi, Tonkatsu and it was all excellent. Would definitely return. Will probably make this one of our neighborhood regular spots. Service was a bit slow and they forgot one of the items we ordered but we enjoyed a slower dining experience and they are very friendly and accommodating. read more

Outstanding, excellent traditional Japanese. For those that think Japanese = sushi: this is what Japanese food is really about. If you immediately are confused or disappointed that the menus is not crammed with deep fried sushi rolls made of cream cheese & variations of the California roll, you may not have ever actually been exposed to the wonderful warmth of traditional Japanese food. Advice: enjoy the tempura and fantastic tonkatsu ramen- this is the best ramen I have had since I was in Tokyo- comfort food to the extreme. Give this one a try... excellent. read more

This is certainly one of my most favorite Japanese restaurants in Contra Costa County after trying alot of imitators. We have recently returned from japan enjoying delicately prepared foods and am so delighted to have found authentic Japanese food , finally, here in the Bay Area. We enjoyed tonite the udon ( chewy) and not the mushy packaged quality that restaurants usually serve. The tempura my husband had was greaseless and crisp with a light batter. I could just eat tons of their agedashi as the broth was flawless!! The pickles are crisp and fresh . Salt is held back offering a refreshing and palate leading taste. Most importantly is the quality of the rice. They serve premium rice that had a creamy texture. This restaurant is for real foodies and who appreciates real , top quality Japanese food . read more

Ordered takeout through an app so review is based on that experience but man, what an experience! I ordered the ramen and holy bejeezus was it good! Great broth, amazing pork, good noodles and easy to consume in one sitting. I was surprised because the meal left me feeling full but not bloated despite finishing everything. You get a lot but it's all cooked perfectly, the noodles are light and the broth is perfect. I chose this as my last meal before i move from the area and now i feel like i need to stay and try more! Don't make the same mistake as me, eat as much as you can from here, the food is amazing! read more

A quaint, cozy, unpretentious place for authentic, reasonably-priced, home-cooked Japanese food & good drinks- a true neighborhood Izakaya! Japanese food has been bastardized in this country and especially in the Bay Area...it's rare to find a Japanese-owned restaurant making traditional clean, fresh, simple dishes prepared and served with care. I waited almost an hour to be served my food and saw larger parties that came in after I did make it through half their meals before I got my small appetizer despite asking about it twice. Finally a local Izakaya restaurant that is delicious with reasonable prices. Better prices compared to similar restaurants in Walnut Creek. The chicken karaage and the miso black cod are must haves! The chicken karaage is crispy yet moist on the inside. The miso black cod is full of flavor and melts in your mouth. I can't wait to go back and try their other menu items. read more

Don't know about the food because we essentially got turned away at the door. Giving benefit of the doubt here with the 2nd star. We called ahead and were told 20- 30 minute wait. Its a 30 minute drive for us to the restaurant. We sat there at the front for a long while when finally dude came over and ask how he could help. We'd like to sit down on one of the many available seats we see? There were a couple of unbussed tables and an entire side of the bar where no one was sitting. It was so awkward how he received us - "Oh, ooooooo, yyyyea it's going to be an hour to order anything". And that was all he said. Certainly many restaurants have large waits and I understand if they are short staffed and a small restaurant. My issue is that normally restaurants will give you an option to wait? Or have a list? We would have sat down and had drinks and stuff. No options were given. It made us feel like we had no options but to leave and not wait. It was super strange and they lost business. read more

Had high expectations given I lived in Japan, the exceptional reviews, and that the owner is from Japan. However I was sorely disappointed. Decor is cool but the music was loud. Food presentation was great, prices were a too high for what you get, and generally food taste was lacking. Miso Sea Bass was delicious but way overpriced for the two small nuggets. I'd consider these small even by Izakaya standards. The pork ramen was salty and the flavor was not good. I've had tons of tonkatau ramen and this one didn't even come close. Agedashi Tofu was ok. Karaage was just ok. Pieces were huge but some parts were over/under cooked. I'm not a purist and open to try new renditions of Japanese classics but the ramen was off the mark. read more

This sure is a great addition not only to Contra Costa County but to entire bay area. I had to drive down to San Jose for a real Izakaya restaurant, but food here is much more authentic and tasted exactly like I had experienced in Japan. They must use good dashi for their foods tasted fine even though they were seasoned lightly. Modestly priced here and seems like family operated. I will recommend this tiny joint to all of my friends. read more

I cannot even begin to tell you how lucky I am to have found this place. There truly isn't many good Japanese places in Concord, so much so, that I was skeptical about even eating here. I thank God I walked in and ordered food. I would actually call this place a "hidden jewel". The decor is awesome. The place is clean. The lighting is perfect. Lastly, the food is amazing!!! I ordered California Rolls (the BEST I've ever had), an all Tuna roll (can't believe how amazing and fresh the tuna was), and also a salad which had a great dressing. Wow, just wow. Honestly, this place needs to hire someone who can run a restaurant. I get the fact that you enjoy making traditional Japanese food, but it's a disappointment when your customers have to wait over an hour for the food. The food is better than some, but it's poorly managed. Total disappointment. They can't handle four tables! Hire some help or you will not survive. This restaurant is small but very neat. The food is VERY GOOD and a bit different than the other Japanese restaurant that I've tried. I enjoyed the food. However this will not for you if you just want a normal quick dinner. I went to tokyo and osaka few weeks ago and this place has similar qualities to the food back there. Had steamed clam, mixed tempura, shrimp pork belly yakitori, and chicken cartilage. Amazing. read more

We got like 7 different things and it was all pretty amazing! We got the kobocha which was the least impressive as it was cold and unflavored but the Kara-age and grilled beef were the best I've ever had. The egg roll thing was like a sweet omelette roll, not a Chinese egg roll lol my bad for mistakenly ordering that. But, the tempura and Gobi chips were sooo good. It was absolutely a delicious meal overall and the place was quiet and very clean (impressive bathroom even). Soccer was on which was appreciated. I hate when restaurants play the news or something semi offensive like certain documentaries (I went to a Japanese sushi spot in Danville once that was playing a sex documentary instead of the warriors...like woah). Their English was ok but some things definitely got lost in translation with us and other customers. But, no worries, the food spoke for itself. Great addition to Concord. read more
