My family ordered dinner for delivery through DoorDash. While it's not the same as getting everything directly after being cooked, everything was still delicious. We mostly ordered dishes we had already tried. The new dish we tried was the black miso cod. It was very tender and juicy. The sauce was delicious, as well. Whether it's your favorite version of the dish will of course come down to what you were raised on or have tried, and your taste buds, but it's a dish that's worth trying. The assorted tsukemono this time included umeboshi (pickled plum) and pearl onions, which was a nice surprise. The umeboshi would have been perfect with their ochazuke. Food here appears to be authentic but the dishes are hit-and-misses. Out of the items we have ordered, the Grilled Whole Squid was the clear winner as it had nice texture and favors. The Kobachi Set with Miso Black Cod was also pretty nice with the side dishes and black cod that was done well. I would not order the Non-Bae Set(Yakitori Combination Set)again as other than the shrimp, the skewers were chewy, dry and lacked favors. Since it's a small restaurant and they have limited staff, beware that the wait for food could be very long. read more

I'm sitting here with my dinner companion and it's literally been an hour and the waiter (only 1 waiter) just brought us our water. Not sure how much longer I can wait for the food. The waiter finally took our order after almost an hour of waiting and I had to ask 'how much longer' numerous time. The appetizer finally came after over an hour of waiting. So far the appetizer is quite tasty. Would I come back? ABSOLUTELY NOT!! JOT FOR THIS KIND OF WAIT TIME AND KO ATTENTION!! Came here with my mom, dad, and brother. What should a restaurant do if the waitress dumps heaping amounts of water on myself and my dad? We thought at least a discount on our check, right? Adorable little restaurant with authentic Japanese food. I love having tiny plates because it means more variety! I ordered the agedashi tofu (my go-to), a couple vegetable skewers, the miso grilled black cod, and a side of rice. Everything was amazing and flavors well balanced. The tofu is crispy on the outside and silky on the inside, a great combination with the dashi broth, bonito flakes, grated radish, and seaweed. I LOVED the veggie skewers. I chose the option of sauce (you can pick salt or sauce) and was pleasantly surprised at how well the sauce brought out the natural sweetness of the peppers and the umami of the mushrooms. Lastly, the miso black cod was a buttery, melt-in-your-mouth, delicately flaky delight that I found was perfect to eat with steamed rice. If you're not used to authentic Japanese food, you might find the dishes a tad bland but honestly for me everything was so on point! I only wish I lived closer! read more

Terrible service. The guy in the front was so unhelpful he didn't try to take our order we sat there waiting in the hot restaurant and he just kept forgetting about us. Such a frustrating experience we left after 30 mins of the guy not even taking our order. There wasn't very many people there it wasn't like it was super busy. I was extremely disappointed with the take out meal. I partially blame myself because some of the negative reviews pointed out some of the problems that I experienced. I shrugged these off and figured the restaurant maybe had an off night for those reviewers, and that the positive reviews were more than likely representative. As another reviewer pointed out, the grilled appetizer meats were clearly cooked hours earlier and had no moisture or flavor. The grilled fish was dry and unpleasant. The one positive was the salmon carpaccio, but it was not nearly enough to salvage a lackluster meal. I want my money back. read more

This continues to be one of my favorite places. I went here regularly during the Covid shutdown for takeout and I continue to enjoy their food. The small plate izakaya food is fantastic but I regularly crave their side dishes like the eggplant and all the little pickles. Was a little turned off because they didn't seem to want our business. Told us the wait was 30 minutes and tried to dissuade us to sit so we said we would be back in 30 minutes. 25 minutes later my son went to check on the status and there are four other people waiting for a table and was told the wait would be 30 minutes. I let the lady I was talking to know that I wasn't happy and wanted confirmation that we were going to be seated before the other party. She kind of shut down and said that she would get us at the nearby Concord Tap House when our table was ready. Of course when she got us ten minutes later, that foursome was indeed seated. Now I'm not one to call people out because of ethnicities but I did take notice they were Japanese (and umm, we are not). So that right there had me wondering if I want to patronize this place but my husband and son were hungry and wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt. Ok, I know that was long but felt that should definitely be noted. We ordered quite a bit and dinner lasted two hours. Items I would order again: Udon. The texture was on point and broth flavorful. I ordered the cold chicken udon and wouldn't hesitate to try a hot udon. Other items I enjoyed and would order again: Chicken cartilage, chicken Kara-age, agedashi tofu, pork belly yakitori. Items I would not order again: ahi poke (more seaweed than poke), shrimp yakitori (it was good but at $4.50 for one piece, in my opinion not worth it), Japanese yam yakitori (again good but not worth $4 for one order), yuzu cheesecake (very small piece and again not worth the price. Also have had better) We also tried the following and they were decent. May or may not order again in order to try something different: soft black seaweed, steamed clams (interesting broth, not sure what was in it and a little watery, not much taste but clams were good), and sunomono. There aren't many choices in the area, although more are popping up. Maybe I'm a little salty because I think the customer service was lacking. Will I go back? I'm not sure. read more

Super good. Exactly as promised: simple, delicious, fresh home style Japanese food. Absolutely will be coming here again. Wish I took pictures but I ate it too fast. This new Japanese restaurant is a gem. It is run by a couple. I ordered vegetable udon soup. The broth has a rich flavor with real flying fish and assorted vegetables- not just some powder essence. They do not cut corners. We also ordered several grilled dishes which are all delicious. The service was attentive. Finally, I was shocked at how cheap it was when the bill came. We almost felt guilty for paying so little. We ended up paying a fat tip out of appreciation. We will become regular patrons. read more

I usually don't leave bad reviews but this was f'in ridiculous. Came on a Friday night, party of 2, it was lightly packed inside but still plenty of seating. There was ONE server/host working... took 15 mins just to sit down. We ordered drinks which took another 10-15 mins. Food took 1.5 hours to come out! People were literally waving their credit card to get their checks. Several customers were getting up to check on their orders. Luckily, we were not in a rush but this was BAD. At least give us a free appetizer or free drinks for wasting so much time? The look on every single tables were pure disappointment and frustration. Unless you have plenty of time, I would avoid this place. The food was not bad but the portions were smaller than I expected. One of the worst dining experiences... Be careful when you're ordering online. The restaurant was supposedly open yesterday when I was ordering for pickup when the system kicked me to delivery and added on all these extra charges. I found out that they were closed when I stopped by to correct the mistake. There was no delivery address since that wasn't my intent. We've eaten here twice, and the food was really good both times. The service on the first outing was very slow, they had a full house and the kitchen was clearly having issues keeping up. That said the food was still really good, so waiting for a good meal should not be an issue unless you have young kids with you. I had a really great izakaya meal with friends months ago before the quarantine, and now that I'm living back in the east bay I came back for to-go and now I love it here even more. The grilled plate with sides is amazing, it's like having a home-cooked Japanese meal, and it's hard to believe it's available right here in Concord any time I want it. The beef was perfectly grilled and seasoned, the pickled vegetables and sides were delicious, and I think this legit may be the best miso soup in the east bay. As it says down below, they're open for outdoor seating during the health order so you can come enjoy that way also. If you usually get the standard bento box fare give this place a try, seriously everything on the menu has been a winner so far. Came here on a Sunday a night with my boyfriend around 8:30, it was pretty quite there was only one table so it was pretty nice. We had started off with the fried oysters which were really delicious and juicy. The dashi tamago came out next and it was so yummy, I would have ordered more if we didn't order so much food. The uni sashimi was of really good quality. The miso black cod is an absolute must. My boyfriend had ordered the ocha zuke with salmon that had tons of yummy flavor. It came topped off with those yummy smoked fish flakes you find on takoyaki. I ordered the tonkatsu ramen and it was really good too! I liked that the broth was a little lighter than what I was used too, it had lots of good flavor and was a very generous bowl. Anyways, I'm I'm super delighted with the service and the quality of the food. It's a nice little restaurant and It's great that they came into concord. After reading the reviews I was salivating to get to Izakaya An. Took my mother there, instead of her go to, to celebrate her 91st bday with my daughter, son and daughter in law. Right from the start I could see that it was going to be a long evening. The server, there was only one, was extremely stressed. He must have been new at the job as he was constantly stopping and starting, and very unorganized and constantly forgetting things,, i,e., dishes, etc. I felt bad for him and thought that someone in the kitchen should come out and help him. There were only three seated tables including us, but he just couldn't get it together. We ordered appetizers but they took quite a while, one was forgotten and they didn't come out at the same time. Our dinner order didn't arrive at the same time, , multiple orders on the same plate without an explanation, another item forgotten and an incorrect item delivered.
