Loveee this place! This is the only authentic sushi spot I know of that opens late. The prices aren't bad and literally everything we ate here was so good. The menu is huge and they have a variety of appetizers! The workers are also super nice and always check up on you. The only downside side is that its SUPER small and cramped. You're back to back with customers at tables and sitting shoulder to shoulder at the bar, not very private but I would still come here for late night tapas. Food reviews: Starting with the appetizers, shisamo, oysters w/ ponzu sauce, fried fish w tarter sauce was so bomb. I lovee the tartar sauce here, it has a hint of dill flavor to it. Those items are a must try! I also love the veggie tempura. For the entrees, you MUST try the grilled salmon belly its super juicy, fatty and melts in your mouth. Another Dose of Johnson's Food Reviews! Actual Japanese Chefs?? Authenticity?! Really good sushi? Izakaya is THE place to go for good and authentic Japanese food! Some of the servers are also Japanese! I've been going to Izakaya for a while now and I can say they usually never disappoint. Izakaya is located in a shared building with Genji and its dining area is really small which might be off putting to some, but its so worth it! Also gives an authentic aspect similar to small sushi restaurants/omakase places in Japan. For parking, you can either park on the street or the small lot behind Izakaya and Sushi Kan (yes another sushi place right next door). I love that they are open until 11:30pm! A lot later than other sushi places, but they are only open for dinner everyday (except Mon closed) so sadly not a place you go to for lunch. They can get really busy, especially on weekends so I definitely recommend calling in first to see if you can reserve or being ok to wait. For their wait system, you write your name on a board, but if its REALLY busy you can leave by leaving your number and they will call you (which I really appreciate). My go to order with friends is Sushi Boat B and Nama Wasabi. For those who don't know, the wasabi you usually get everywhere is fake. Its green dyed horseradish because real wasabi is super expensive and wasabi root doesn't grow here. However, some places will sell the real thing at an additional cost of course. Izakaya offers freshly grated wasabi (Nama Wasabi) and its SO GOOD. It has this really good umami flavor that brings a kick to everything. Its not as "spicy" as fake wasabi, but has a longer lasting taste that really makes sushi taste better. 100% RECOMMEND getting it especially if you never had real wasabi. For sushi, their nigiri and fish really taste fresh most of the time, and the style they do their Unagi is SUPER good. More baked than other places, but less sweet too so its bring out this really unique version of the typical Unagi nigiri. Their toro is good too, but my favorite of all is their Amoebi (raw sweet shrimp). So simple, but yet theirs is super good. Eat it with the nama wasabi. My friends and I always get Sushi Boat B because it provides the most variety for a reasonable price and its great to share. I also always have a good experience with service here. Even though their dining area is small, they usually have a good amount of servers and they are always so friendly and try to be super fast. Overall, Izakaya is a solid place for sushi and authenticity. Most sushi restaurants around here don't actually have Japanese sushi chefs anymore as its usually Korean, Chinese, or Mexican sushi chefs - nothing wrong with that of course, but its still nice to see Japanese sushi chefs around. I only have 2 sushi spots I recommend to people in the South Bay and its Kaizen in Campbell and Izakaya. My friends and I will definitely still continue to come here for those fun dinner nights and cravings for real wasabi. It was late in the evening and I was craving Japanese food. This was one of few sushi restaurants open late in SJ, so I came here after my meeting. It's small and tight restaurant, so don't be surprised if you feel squished. I was seated at the side of the sushi bar and got to see the sushi chef make their master piece. They had a tuna nigiri set special for $20 and that was too good to pass up. I also got a plain Japanese curry with rice for $14 since I already spent $20 on the tuna set. Tuna nigiri set special (5/5): this set come with the regular tuna, the toro, and the otoro. The toro and tuna tasted amazing, otoro was amazing as it just melts in your mouth. These cuts are pretty expensive so for $20 it was a good deal. Curry with rice (5/5): For $14, this a huge portion of rice and curry. It tasted like great comfort food and don't worry it has beef in it for all you protein lovers. I'm glad there was a sushi restaurant still open and I would come back here again. We were close by and decided to try this place out. Parking wise there is street parking and a big parking lot that I thought was for the dim sum place but is shared among the other restaurants. We got there at 530 right when they opened and got seated. We didn't have any reservations which was a relief. The resturant shares the same entrance to the other restaurant there that does grilling of food and shares the same restrooms. The Japanese restaurant is small and can probably accommodate less than 25 folks or so. Food wise, the kids had ramen and a chicken udon. They loved the udon and enjoyed the ramen however the ramen didn't have much meat in it. Just had one pork belly in it and ramen noodles. We ordered the onigiris, for some reason I thought they would be grilled but they were not. I think it would have been better if they did so but we enjoyed the umi, salmon and a spicy one. We also ordered the grilled octopus, Manila clam soup, sashi appetizer, croquettes and everything was delicious. We did try to order the chicken katsu curry however they said it was spicy so the kids couldn't enjoy curry but just giving folks a heads up. I would suggest this place. This is my favorite Japanese restaurant in the Southbay. As a Japanese American I know that all the dishes I've tasted are authentic and taste like the home cooking. I grew up with. I love speaking to the staff in Japanese, and they are one of the very few Japanese owned restaurants today. My wife and I ordered the Katsu curry plate and the sashimi platter. The meal came with a Japanese salad that had Ramen noodles on top. It separates itself from all the other pre-meal salads we get from other Japanese restaurants. It was very tasty. The miso soup was delicious as well. Well little pieces of green onion that gave it a nice touch. The Katsu curry tasted excellent. The tonkatsu was very juicy in the inside, and the breaded outside was crispy. The curry sauce was excellently spiced. I really enjoyed that dish. My wife sashimi platter was also very fresh and tasted wonderful. Although this location is very tiny, we find it very intimate and cozy. I'm glad that Izakaya is still in business after covid. I was able to place a reservation earlier in the day for me and my boyfriend. It looked like almost every seat in the restaurant was taken. This is a small family owned restaurant, but I love how it's a hidden gem! We almost walked right past the restaurant, even though I've been here several times. It shares the same door as the House of Genji. I was sad that they didn't have a couple of menu items, but there is SO much to choose from, that it wasn't too big of a problem. We ordered calpico mixed drinks to start us off. It's a nice, refreshing drink if you don't like the alcohol taste. Oyster shooters - one of my favorite dishes here! It has an oyster, ponzu, small fish eggs and a quail egg. My boyfriend said that he liked these more than Alexander's hamachi shots! Fried chicken thighs with Mayo - I want to label it as karaage, but it was labeled as something else. This chicken had a slightly lighter fried texture, and was delicious! Yaki onigiri - grilled rice ball. I wish it was crunchier, but my boyfriend liked how it didn't stick to his teeth like other yaki onigiris. Okonomiyaki - this was quite large for just 2 people. We are most of it except maybe 1/4 of it...but we did have a lot of other dishes. Chicken skewers (thighs) - skewers are always a must at izakayas! Bacon wrapped asparagus - I kind of liked this more than the chicken skewers! Philly roll - cream cheese, salmon and avocado. Fish was very fresh! I wish we ordered more sushi! Service - great! Very kind and pretty quick service. Pretty great place to eat!! Its a VERY small restaurant so please be aware of that, if you are claustrophobic then this might be a stressful environment for you. They have a parking lot, and this restaurant is actually connected (building-wise) with Genji (the restaurant next door). Its a little confusing, but just enter Genji and Izakaya will be on the left upon entering the building. However, the food is very very delicious! I believe another yelp review said the portions here were small, they really arent though! Theyre pretty large if im being quite honest. I have been coming to Izakaya for years. It remains to be one of my favorite if not my favorite sushi and Izakaya place in San Jose. There are many good things about Izakaya and I will try to share some of my favorites below. This is an authentic Japanese place, they fly fish from Japan every week. As an Izakaya (Japanese pub) this place is known for small plates and little dishes to share. So, don't really look at it as a "sushi" only place. One if my favorite fishes here (unique to them, at least in San Jose) are fresh mackerel (masaba) ; engawa (jaw of halibut); octopus; hamachi; aji and aji tataki and whatever is listed on white board - typically recommended by the chef. It is important to get "right things here". Our other favorites include: Ankimo (monkfish liver); Toro; Uni; Sashimi Omakase; Okonomiyaki - Japanese Pizza, traditionally from Kyoto; Aji Tataki; Masaba; Octopus with wasabi stem; soft shell crab. Personally, I would make rolls the last thing to try here (due to authenticity of Izakaya) and focus on sashimi, small bites and specials menu first. Tips: This is a busy place, reservations will do you good. Tuesday and Friday are some of the best nights due to shipment from Japan. Sit at the bar and enjoy eating with he chefs. It is a small place, so you may have to wait a bit - the wait is faster if you sit at the bar. There is a parking lot off to the side as well. Most dishes/sushi is best to share. If you're looking for a no frills, bar seating, authentic Japanese food -- this is your place. Been coming here since I was a kid and this restaurant is a staple of Japantown SJ. It's open late night, so if you're feeling sushi after-hours... Food is fairly priced and my god, just the taste and ambiance brings me back to Japan. You don't need to go to Michelin/hyped up sushi joints. Those places are for when you're trying to impress someone. But if you want that legit, intimate experience you'd get walking down an alleyway in Tokyo, this is where you'll have those meaningful experiences and indulge in great food. The wait can be long at times but you can call ahead and have your name placed down on their wait list. The service is fast and fantastic. They give you a wet towel for your hands when you are seated and consistently check in on you. Came here on a Friday night. There's a large parking area next to the restaurants. When we got to the restaurant, it was pretty packed and there was a long wait. The restaurant is small located right next to house of genji, and they both have the same door entrance. We wrote our name down, and it took an hour and half until we got seated but it was worth the wait. We were seated at the bar counter area and sat across from the sushi chefs. Everything came out pretty fast. We ordered regular sashimi plate that came with miso soup, house salad and rice, katus don, omakase sushi, toro nigiri and a grilled fish (forgot the name). (2) it's inside the door marked "Genji" (a place that's no longer there.) (3) this is not really an izakaya - it's a tiny restaurant with a very big and authentic menu. Our food was mostly really good. Good quality sushi and nice portions. Bento is available even for dinner - and they are only open for dinner. Tempura wasn't the greatest, but was okay. Really authentic vibes! This is a tiny little restaurant that gets busy busy, stays open late, and has delicious and authentic Japanese food! What more can you want?! The menu is large and pretty overwhelming. You can order a hodgepodge of small dishes and fill up pretty nicely. All the small dishes can add up and leave you with a big bill, but the fish is super fresh and tasty. I tried a bunch of different sashimi and sushi. I enjoyed it all. Simply superb, I'm so glad I came here. I wasn't expecting a whole lot, but every bite was fantastic. I ordered a couple things. Okonomiyaki, geso karaage, sake chazuke, and the chicken katsu. I've never seen ochazuke served at any restaurant so I was pleasantly surprised to see it here, and it was really really good, please try it! I made my partner try it and he loved it too. We stopped here after a late night show and this was one of the few places that was open till late ( kitchen closes at 12:30 am on Friday ). There was plenty of street parking nearby and the place was packed even at 11:30 pm. I'm so glad we were introduced to this tiny gem of a restaurant! It's hard to find a good sushi restaurant in San Jose that isn't too expensive or long of a wait. We arrived just before 7pm on a Friday evening and we were seated at one of the last tables. This is a veryyy small and casual restaurant - be ready to be sitting close to your table neighbor. The servers are friendly and fast. There are so many things to choose from on the menu (it's almost overwhelming) but for two people, we ordered the hamachi Kama, sushi boat A, uni nigiri, and croquette! You can also get free hot house tea with your meal. It came out to around $130 before tipping and we were stuffed. Many different choice than other Japanese restaurant. It has Japanese local vibe. Not many table and crow. But I love it.
