So disappointed in my last two experiences at J Alexander's in Boca. I am completely sympathetic to what the industry is going through now but my last two times dining here the food was almost inedible. One time I got a salad where most of the greens were wilted and the chicken was chewy. On my most recent trip I ordered a burger (they have AMAZING burgers) and although I ordered it medium it came out well done and was almost flavorless not to mention the fries were soggy (usually they are perfectly crisp) and the bun tasted stale. We also ordered the carrot cake which usually comes out almost too hot to eat and this time came out just barely warm on the out side and cold inside. Service was great as usual and our server was very attentive. There were only at most 10 tables sat between inside and outside dining and plenty of staff in the open kitchen. I'm sure COVID has affected them in how they order and staff etc but really wanted the one bad experience to be based on an off day so tried it again. Want to support local restaurants but hoping they can still offer the same great product we always loved. read more

You'd never expect to be wowed by a chain restaurant like this albeit more upscale. The restaurant is always crowded and reservations are a must. Now for the good part. Everything is good. The best dish in the house is the Calypso salad. We think it's the best salad we ever ate! And do we eat salad. Try it. You'll love it. Then there's the sandwiches, fish, stakes, etc. all good. My favorite is the ribs. Tasty, fall off the bone yummy. Be sure to ask for a wet napkin cause it's finger licking good. For a chain with competitors this one is a winner. read more

CON'S There were a few con's to our overall good dining experience. First is that they don't take reservations and the way their call ahead service works is that they will not take your name until their larger tables are sat, so for dinner at 6:30, I had to keep calling back every 15 minutes to see if there were tables available. Once we were seated, the ambiance was relaxing and beautiful. Our server was not that great. The timing was ok, but he seemed confused the entire time. Last con, they don't have an official kids menu. They will tell you the items they have for kids, but there are no substitutuions (such as fries instead of mashed potato's). PRO'S The food. We started with the fire roasted artichokes and they were amazing. They had a lemon, garlic, butter sauce brushed on the top that had just the right amount of saltiness. The portions are large for the entree's. I split the ribs with a fellow diner and there was still food left over. The BBQ sauce had a great balance of sweet with a bite of spice. The mashed potato's were just ok. They were well seasoned, however, they were on the cold side. Their coleslaw was a treat. As a lover of shoe strip fries, it was difficult not to eat the ones that came with my nephews meal. They are fantastic. For the kids the grilled cheese was served on rye bread with a pickle slice on each half of the sandwich, which made the bread a bit soggy. Had they had a kids menu, we would have known what kind of bread was being used and it may have changed our order. Luckily my child was ok with the rye bread. We ordered broccoli with the sandwich and it was the largest protion I have ever seen served in a resturant. It was truly more that I would make at home as a side dish for 6 people (the size of 2 large men's fists). My nephew had the grilled chicken which was thouroughly spiced and not an ideal choice for a child. They should have something more mild for kids. My verdict is...great resturant for a special dinner, but not particularly family friendly. read more

My husband loves this restaurant, and took me here when we visited Boca last, so that i could try it. He ordered the French Dip Sub (prime rib sub) and I got the chicken tenders. I tasted his sub, and I have to say, one of the most delicious prime rib subs EVER! The meat was soft and juicy, the french dip was delicious! As for my chicken tenders! They were done to perfection! My first visit to J Alexander's but certainly not my last. Excellent service, food and value. I took my business team (7) here for a Christmas luncheon and everyone loved it. I would suggest the fish sandwich and do NOT leave without trying the Key Lime pie - it was fantastic! Our server was Michael and he was great - he anticipated every question and need for our team. The place was packed for lunch but service did not suffer. Overall, a great experience! The only thing I would suggest is to add the opportunity to reserve a table using Open Table. read more

Skip the salads.... I ordered the Cypress salad which is fried chicken strips with a creamy dressing, not the healthiest item on the menu. However, this time the tomatoes tasted and smelled of bleach or some kind of chemical. Not sure if the lettuce was the same way because it was covered in all the yummy things like dressing and cheese and bacon. I wish I had spoken up and asked for something else. J Alexanders is a reasonable clone of Houston. we skipped the apps since they were all fried fare. Caesar salad was very wet, which could work for you if you hate dry salads. For main course had prime rib and lady had filet. Make sure to order your steak a little lower than normal temp wise because you have a 70 percent chance of sending it back anyway. Filet had a funny char flavor, mashed potatoes were xtra salty but prime rib was excellent. restaurant is a decent Houston clone at a slightly lower price. also my wine glass smelled like dirty water, similar to an aquarium. My husband and I went out to dinner on Tuesday night to this location. While waiting for a table we witnessed an exchange between a male manager wearing glasses and a young lady who appeared to be a hostess. The way that manager spoke to that young lady who was just trying to do her job and get people sat at tables was wildly inappropriate and unprofessional. My husband and I were both servers through our college years and we know how difficult and stressful the restaurant business can be, but we both agree it is never acceptable for a person in a position of management to be rude and abrasive to their employees. It shows poor leadership and lack of management ability, in my opinion. I asked my server if that manager was like that to other employees and I was shocked to find out he's the general manager! No one should be subjected to that kind of behavior and we both just felt awful for the young lady at the hostess stand. She was clearly distraught after their interaction and had tears in her eyes. Any employer who brings an employee to tears in the middle of doing their job should be removed from their position IMMEDIATELY. We will NOT be returning to this location, as we would rather spend our hard earned money at a place that doesn't allow their employees to be treated so poorly. I was so upset with this experience that I am creating Yelp profile just so people can know about this. We've been going here for years. This was the singular worst experience. Justin, our waiter, didn't pay attention to anything we said. We asked for the Manhattan on the rocks, so he brings it strait up. We did order the artichokes, but he never brought the wet cloths to wipe our hands after. He also cleared those plates before even bringing our drinks. I asked to get a salad instead of cole slow with the ribs, so he thought I didn't need the fries - where again he didn't bring a wet cloth to clean my hands after. Lunch Tuesday August 19th, 2014 1PM. Party of 6. Ordered the Old Fashion Cheesburger. The burger comes cut in half with both halfs held together with giant toothpicks. Well, I removed the giant toothpicks and took one bite into one of the halves and chipped my tooth on a broken off piece of the giant toothpick left behind in the meat. Ouch! Next, the hamburger filling promptly fell out all over the place. When put back together as best I could to try and eat it like a regular hamburger, it was OK but nothing special. The fries were way over salted and shoestring variety, basically, inedible. Service was fine. Management should realize what a mistake it is to cut the loaded burger in half and the risk of those wooded giant toothpicks. Other members of the party ordered the new Steak Burger but were unimpressed. Nice atmosphere, but food doesn't match. read more

Back in the day, we'd call this place a fern bar with an attitude. The decor, waiters, and menu seem to make you want to think it is worth the prices. For my friends who ordered steaks, it was just what they wanted. For me, who ordered fish, it was a bit bland. Along with a very nice-sized piece of mild white-fleshed fish (can't remember the type and they don't publish their menu so I can't look it up) over couscous served with a softball-sized serving of cole slaw. The fish needed seasoning (I finally broke down and put a few grains of salt on it which improved it big time) and the couscous was nice, but what was that cole slaw all about. It wasn't mentioned in the menu and it wasn't mentioned by the waiter when I asked what came with the fish, but it seemed to be going out with a lot of plates I saw come through during the evening. My server was a little annoying and the food was incredibly over seasoned. I had the crab cakes but couldn't taste the crab. I did taste the old bay seasoning though for he remainder of my day into the next day. Something seems a little off lately with this Boca location - can't put my finger on it, but there's definitely some issues. Went with a table of 4. We were seated in a corner booth that was way too large for our party size, but still a good table. The menu is American w/ some Cajun overtones and spices mingled in the dishes. I had the grilled artichokes. They were very good with nice char and a complimentary remoulade dipping sauce. My parents had the mixed salad. It was large, colorful and crisp. Another person had the salad w/ slices of rare tuna. They said it was good, but were disappointed that the wasabi was hidden under some garnish and did not notice it until the dish was practically fully eaten. Other dishes ordered were crab cakes w/ slaw ($38), steak frites- which was described by the waitress as "skirt" and clearly was more of a sirloin cut. Side was an orzo/wild rice dish that was fine, but a bit salty and served cold, which we felt should have been mentioned when ordering. I had the prime rib with broccoli. While the meat was cooked to my liking, the outer seasoning was way, way, way too salty- and I'm a salty fan. Even the broccoli was overly salty. Once I got past the salted edge, the meat was tasty, not spectacular. I'd forgo this dish next time. Another party member had the chicken sandwich which came on a nice brioche bun and served with a loaded potato. Some of our requests were forgotten, such as "please serve the sour cream on the side" or "may we have more dressing for the salad", but we were not upset by it. Perhaps on another occasion we might have been annoyed. We really liked our waitress, Marissa, so we kind of forgot along with her... We had 2 beers and one wine. Including tax $178 plus the tip. Too much for this restaurant. Overall pleasant experience, but not sure if I would return for anything but a burger and a beer. read more

Just came from J. Alexanders for an early birthday dinner. The food was awesome. I had the Chicago Rib eye and it was delish. It came with a loaded baked potato. I also had a Kale salad to begin with. The salad with champaign vinagerette was yummy.My boyfriend had the Cyprus Salad and he loved it. Ordered a side of shoestring fries that were awesome. To top it off we had the carrot cake and I am note lying when I say this was the best carrot cake I hav ever had n my life. Special touches made everything even more enjoyable.
