With seven locations in south Florida & many friends recommending J. Alexander, I'm glad I'm giving it a try. They are located south on Glades Road west of I95 near Shake Shack. There was valet a lot of free parking in front of the restaurant. [[HIGHLIGHT]]This was a real happening, the restaurant was packed on a Saturday night.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I'm glad our reservation was honored and we only waited for about five minutes. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The restaurant was noisy, but fortunately the tables were spaced so we were not on top of each other.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] In 1971 J. Alexander opened in Nashville, Tennessee. There are 44 restaurants, mostly in the south, with 2,700 employees. They are considered a casual American food chain offering gift cards & VIP membership. Friends love their salads and with seven choices some with shrimp Louie or Asian tuna, what could be bad? The sandwiches, soups, burgers, sandwiches, steaks & house specialties look appealing. There is an extensive wine list, with many by the glass along with crafted martinis & cocktails. Joshua waited on us, he was on point. We started by sharing a delicious calamari appetizer that was enough for four of us. The calamari was fresh crispy and tasty. I shared baby back ribs with a huge baked potato and delicious coleslaw with my husband, it was more than enough for the two of us. Friends enjoyed their huge salads, they looked very good and they raved about them. The portions were very generous and prices were reasonable for the quality of our meal. Excellent. There are J. Alexander restaurants and then there is J. Alexander in Boca. Great service, excellent food. The Food doesn't taste like it happened off the back of a Sysco truck or wondered from the deep freeze. My recommended sides the wild rice and Mac cheese. The 5-star rating is for the restaurant itself. Be careful when ordering through Door Dash! Twice now the order has not been filled correctly. I ordered a Caesar salad with chicken ($9.99 additional) and it arrived with no chicken! Last night I ordered a French Dip sandwich with horseradish and a dip and a loaded potato. The Sandwich arrived with no dip and no horseradish. The potato came with no toppings. Very disappointing especially because what I love about this restaurant is its consistency. I spoke with a manager after the first delivery and she was very understanding. She told me that I would receive something in the mail to make up for the missing chicken. Nothing ever came. I will still go back to the restaurant because I love it, but this will make me hesitate before ordering with Door Dash again. Haven't been here in a long time, but the food still hits! I always order Alex's Salad with fried chicken and it's just as delicious as I remember. Season is definitely here so unless you arrive early, be prepared to wait or fight for a seat. The service at the bar was a bit lacking (felt like they were giving more attention to the regulars) but nothing that ruined the experience. Overall still a great spot and worth the visit! read more

I highly suggest you make reservations like we did because I can see the wait being long for walk ins. We ordered the smoked salmon dip and fried shrimp for appetizers. They were both good. They do give you ample amount to share. For entrees we ordered the burger, which is always delicious. The ribs with mac and cheese and green beans, and the kebabs. The ribs are really good. Not too saucy and very tender. The Mac and cheese is good too. Creamy and delicious. I would definitely recommend this and the burger. The kebabs were okay. The food was great, the service was a big disappointment. Our waiter was not friendly and he didn't make an attempt to refill our glasses. We ordered dressings on the side for our salads, which we had to ask twice for and we waited about 5 minutes for them to arrive after our food came out. We also asked for wet hand towels after our appetizer. The guy that brought them over brought dry napkins and then we finally received wet, cold, towels 15 minutes later. We also ordered coleslaw, which didn't come out with our food, and we had to ask our waiter for it. It finally came out about 15 minutes into our meal. We dined at J. Alexander's to enjoy a holiday lunch. We made a reservation and were seated immediately. We were greeted by Amiyah our server who was very friendly and attentive. She provided honest feedback about several dishes on the menu. We decided on the Steak and Fries, Babyback ribs and Ahi Tuna salad. Everything was delicious and portions were large enough to take leftovers home. One of the highlights to our experience was our server Amiyah. Her attentiveness, personality and engaging conversation is rare. We have dined at several restaurants nearby for lunch which have provided disappointing service. Our waitress alerted us that if we share there is an extra charge only if they arrange the shared dish on separate plates. That alone took her tip to over 20%. Last month I met my friend for dinner. We were sat quickly and sat in j a comfortable booth. I like how J Alexander's has a varied menu. I usually eat at the one in Plantation. This location has an identical menu. I ordered a house salad and filet mignon with loaded baked potato. My salad was tasty. It was very fresh. The steak was cooked just how I liked it, medium. The loaded baked potato had a good flavor and actually was loaded. That was nice to see because too often restaurants skimp on the toppings Our server could have been more attentive. The service was excellent and the food came out ridiculously fast. The reason it came out fast was because it tasted premade and warmed over. My husband had a grilled chicken sandwich on a brioche with fries and I had the Shrimp Louie salad. The chicken tasted like a dry piece of leather, even the texture was awful. My shrimp were overcooked and not pleasant to eat. The quarter of iceberg lettuce sat on top of a fairly good salad. The hard boiled eggs were made sometime ago. I made a reservation for 7 people for my graduation. The wait was longer than expected even though the restaurant wasn't busy. The service was great. Our server was kind and when one of the guests didn't like their drinks he insisted on having her choose something else. The food was ok. Took the wife and kids over to J. Alexanders for Mother's Day and wow, the place was bustling. The winner here is the carrot cake for me and it's also the main reason we come. While I've never been disappointed with any of our meals and/or service, this particular carrot cake is stellar and keeps us coming back over and over again to both the Boca and Plantation location. I would not consider this upscale or fancy as some have noted on their reviews...it's mid level and a very popular lunch spot for the business crowd. They got a little bit of everything including some great salads that are on the hefty portioned size. Overall, it's a great option if you're in the area... DON'T sleep on the carrot cake! read more

I usyally enjoy this restaurant but my good saturday evebibg was sub par. I ordered the soecisl, a 14 oz ribeye oscar. Tge steak first came blood raw wuth blood juice on the plate it was suppossed to be cooked to a medium temp. They took it back and cooked it more. But it was very tough which surprised me. Today I learned of a restaurant that is now on my list of favorites! What a lovely lunch I had! Parking was plentiful and the atmosphere of the restaurant was lovely. We had the nicest waiter - I wish I had gotten his name. He quickly got us our drinks and took our orders when we were ready. We couldn't decide what to get because everyone I knew told me about his or her favorite dish. We decided to share a cheeseburger and a salad that had delicious crispy chicken, avocado and all sorts of other delectables. The food was delicious and the waiter re-filled our drinks without even asking. The service was excellent. My lunch partner loves the fries there - I didn't agree but I'm not fond of the skinny fries. We spent nearly 2 hours having lunch and were never rushed out - - - The bathroom was very clean and there were enough stalls that you didn't feel the need to rush. J. Alexander's is a consistent restaurant in my team's lunch rotation. Whenever we travel up to Boca, we eat here a lot. Something I really appreciate about a restaurant is when it's always full--and that's the case here. Still, it's usually very quick for us to be seated. So why a three star rating? Please know, a three star rating isn't bad. As a matter of fact there are many good things about a three star rating. For J. Alexander, the quality of the food consistently good, presented well, and is tasty. Everything comes out quickly, and the team works well together. It's common to have your server and additional staff bring you drinks, extras, etc. And the carrot cake? Well...if you've never had it here before, then you must! It's warm, moist, and decadently topped with a delicious icing-like frosting. I look forward to it every time we come. Where they can improve is on the service. Honestly, it's hit or miss. Sometimes you have a great server, other times you have one that lacks in enthusiasm. Overall, I would recommend J. Love this place every time I am in south Florida I try to put this on my list of places to eat. Their salad alone is amazing and worth trying. The service I received tonight was top tier her name was..... There was no wait at all I was sat right down even though I eat alone. I prefer the booth rather than the bar. It wasn't too noisy. My bill came up to about 70 bucks cocktail, salad, entree. They have really thick steaks, however this time I told them butterflied (a suggestion from a friend) and WOW it just melts in your mouth. 10/10 recommends to tell them butterflied next time you give them a try. read more

I used to love this place but I feel like it's gone downhill especially in the salad department. The salads used to be big as they are meal size salads with a much better presentation. They used to come in a beautiful bowl and beautifully presented. if you ordered salmon or shrimp on top of the salad, it was a dinner size portion. This is the second time that I've had a dinner salad and it was disappointing My girlfriend got the shrimp Louie salad and the lettuce was brown. The shrimp were very small and sad looking. It was just thrown together, like a five-year-old made it. I had shrimp Louie with salmon instead of shrimp. The salmon tasted good. It was a very small piece and the salad presentation was really lacking! I know that this is a popular place. It's great that you can make reservations there now. So perhaps the other entrées are a better choice but really guys a $20 salads ... you can do a little bit better. How long does it take to put in a pretty bowl and arrange it nicely How do you send out a salad without making sure that the lettuce is NOT brown??? Our service was great! I took my son to J. Alexander's last week for an impromptu dinner. We were seated quickly and while the place was fairly crowded, it wasn't loud which was great. We started with the spinach queso which was really good. My son is not a fan of spinach but ate a ton of it. He loved his Buffalo chicken sandwich and my salad was good too. It's been 10 years since my first review of JAlexander's and a recent experience at an early Friday night promoted me to add a new review. Simply put, it was outstanding. And for my fellow Yelpers (Max is Back!) I infrequently use the term outstanding. And when I do, I mean it. I'm a straight-shooting simple guy from Brooklyn, so what I write will be to the point and (subjectively) objective. Arrived at 4:15 with a reservation and was seated promptly. Several hostesses at reception desk, all young, tastefully dressed in similar outfits (corporate policy?) and offered a smile, although seemingly a forced one. Shown to a table by a serving station, while my reservation submission clearly states "Do Not Sit By Serving Station". Not a problem, moved one over away from serving station. Their menu has been consistent over the last 10-15 years. Guess when you have consistent well prepared dishes which are popular with your clients, why switch them up. Daily specials are offered, but having dined here with some degree of frequency, many of the specials are not unique, and appear daily as their daily specials. Over the years we have had the broiled salmon, half roasted chicken, broiled pork chops, burgers, entree sized salads, soups, and several different types of broiled fish. All the side dishes are interchangeable from the dish description, which is great. Their baked potatoes are hugely oversized, and can be ordered unloaded. The skinny French fries are delicious. Vegetables such as broccoli and string beans or a side of deliciously tasting ripe sliced tomatoes are a nice compliment. Their smashed Yukon potatoes cannot be equaled. For this particular meal we each had broiled pork chops, one with smashed potatoes and the other with baked potatoe. The broccoli was prepared on point. The potato sides were delicious and if you look at my baked potato you'll wonder how many it could have fed. We ordered, for the first time, the breaded (fried) jumbo shrimp. They were, without a doubt, delicious, served with two made-in-house sauces. I was tempted to order a second portion but resisted my urge. The roasted broiled baked pork chop was huge dish, with two humongous pork chops, prepared as order (well done), and the sauce was neither too sweet or spicy. We each only ate one chop and took the other back home, allowing us to enjoy another dinner the following night. Bar drinks were superbly prepared. A Stoli dry martini, ordered very very very chilled (with ice slivers) was quickly brought to the table. It was a double, which gave my husband a buzz before he finished the first glass. The blue cheese stuffed large olives were on point. My draft beer was served icy cold. The martini was really well prepared, props to the bartender who prepared it and our waiter for clearly expressing how it was requested. Ambience is pleasant. Quiet during off hours. Noisy at lunch. Mostly business folk and locals. At night, quite loud, especially at bar with TVs and folks drinking. And drinking and talking talking. Loud. And louder. Have left for last our excellent server, Josh. He was articulate. Low-keyed but attentive at the appropriate times. Efficient. And actually, charming. Props to him. Management should recognize someone with his talents. Over the years we have experienced many professional servers, which sets JAkexanders apart from other chain restaurants. We've also experienced some who, perhaps thinking they were being efficient, are actually abrupt and border on snarky and dismissive. This was not the case with Josh. I hadn't been to J's in a hot minute since working next door at Circuit City back in the day. This was our spot! It's been over a decade since... and on a Wed night, I thought we'd try something more of a step up from a traditional sports bar. J's has a solid crowd on a Wednesday night in the off season. Good sign! We sat at the bar and enjoyed ourselves with a Vodka Mule and a martini. I ordered the Prime rib with a loaded baked potato, my friend got his prime rib with loaded mash. The night started rough: we waited 20 minutes past our reservation time to be seated, and the hostess threw down the menus on our table like it was the end of her shift and walked away without saying much of anything. Our waitress was super kind and attentive, the best part of the night. The drinks were good (and even came with extra!) and the appetizers were okay, but slightly overpriced. The crispy shrimp were fantastic, and the Caesar salad was just okay. The croutons in the salad were obviously fresh, but somehow still soggy. Our waitress cleared our appetizer plates and brought us steak knives. Naturally, we expected the entrees to come out soon. However, the entrees took so long that I barely wanted mine anymore. It was already an hour after our reservation time before we were served them. And the wait was definitely not worth it, either. The steak kabob and rice were the quality of Ruby Tuesday's and the fries were the quality of Steak 'n Shake's. I finished my entrée out of hunger, rather than of quality and enjoyment. We were originally going to get a dessert, but it was so late that we didn't even bother. The Sysco quality of the entrees and the long wait times were not worth the steakhouse prices.
