So let me start off by being very transparent - Redlands wasn't my first, second or even third choice but I somehow ended by Oxmoor after driving to several spots in the Highlands & Grinstead area that were overbooked and way too populated in these still COVID-19 times. J. Alexander's parking lot was not overly crowded. You guys I have not been to this restaurant in over a decade! When I walked in I was immediately greeted and there was an hour wait for a table but the hostess directed me to the bar which was immediately left in a separate room that had open seating. As soon as I sat down at the bar, Marlene one of the bartenders greeted me. If you follow me then you know being acknowledged is extremely important to me. She cleaned off my area and immediately provided me with the menu and a roll of silverware. I ordered an Old Fashioned and substituted Woodford Double Oaked instead of the designated Bulliet Bourbon. The OF was made well with a nice orange peel and a Luxardo cherry. They also have specialty square ice. Very tasty. Their menu has a great variety for people who want salads, chicken, steak or seafood. I ended up ordering a Caesar salad with tomatoes and for dinner I ordered the New York strip medium rare with smashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese and green beans. So my steak came out more medium that medium rare but I have to say it was absolutely perfect. The flavor and the seasoning were really delicious. Typically I order a filet cut and I think medium rare just taste better for that type of cut but I was totally satisfied with a medium rare to medium for the strip and I may start choosing a strip more often. They melt butter on top of theirs and it just makes it!!! My side choices were all good. I'm really picky when it comes to macaroni and cheese and their did not disappoint, they use small pasta shells and the flavor, texture and top crust were all as they should be - other restaurants in Louisville could learn from the chefs and cooks at this restaurant. My green beans were delicious and not over cooked and the smashed potatoes were as expected. Also the portions here are huge! I was able to take my leftovers and have a whole meal the next day. For dessert I ordered the carrot cake and I was blown away!!! They serve theirs hot. Imagine hot & moist carrot cake with the perfect amount of sweetness. It was delicious. Tried this place for the first time and order take out to celebrate our 37th wedding anniversary. Finding the right website and then finding the ky restaurant was cumbersome. That was the start of things going downhill further. My food was suppose to be ready at 1:28pm and I arrived around 1:35. My food wasn't ready. It took two attempts to finally get my food an half hour later. Was told by a third person it had been ready a long time ago and should have picked up in the back. No one told me that at all. My wife didn't like her fries, I didn't like the peanut incrusted trout which had no taste, and we both was disappointed with the dry coleslaw. The building and inside were impressive with separate bar and dinning area. Seeing the cooks prepare plates was interesting, too bad the food wasn't. I spent $70 for a disappointed experience. This will be an anniversary to remember but not in a positive way. This will be my only visit, so can't recommend it at all. read more

No matter the day of the week, every time we come here, we eat the best tasting food and receive wonderfully attentive service. Our numerous experiences have been so fantastic that we chose to bring our wedding party of 12 here for dinner after our small ceremony. We had numerous appetizers. The salmon dip and spinach queso were beyond delicious. The spinach queso dip oozed steam for at least 10 min after it was brought to our table. I could not believe it stayed hot for so long. The chips were not overly salty, but were crisp and warm. I will not even mention our list of entrees. Thought, suffice it to say that all of our guests thoroughly enjoyed their meal and experience. Redlands grill which for years was simply known just as "J Alexander's" is located in st Mathews portion of Louisville just adjacent to the oxnoor center and has a prime location of being right off the expressway entrance. For awhile when visiting the St Mathews area I've seen the "Redlands" sign while merging off the expressway and thought "I've heard great things I really need to try that place". Well today was the day. Was out running some errands with the wife and our youngest the one year old and we had some free time around 1pm. So I said let's do this and walked on in. Upon entry they have a very intimate inside. Very dark lit with an open bar area and kitchen area a large visible wine selection. Some would say it's a romantic setting. We received very top notch service here. Wasn't many other dining at this time but everyone was super friendly and efficient. We decided to start off with a appetizer special of the day. It was a Emerald coast shrimp. It was amazing. One of the best shrimps I've ever eaten and according to my wife the best shrimp she has every had. They had a cocktail sauce and a orange sauce that I'm not sure the name of. But I've had Similar with calamari in the past. Both very tasty sauces and added nice elements to the crispy breaded shrimp. For the entree I ordered the Steak Maui which is a ribeye served with smashed potatoes. My wife ordered the New York strip with the Mac and cheese and she added a second side of Brussels sprouts. The baby was contempt eating the lemons from our water and sneaking a bite or two of them potatoes and Mac and cheese. My steak was great. Very good flavor and a nice sauce naturally on it that I assume is the "Maui" portion. I don't wanna say it was pineapple but the flavor gave me the flavor hint of what you sometimes get on top a cooked ham at a Luau. Either way it worked and was a great compliment. My only slight complaint is I ordered my steak medium and it was more medium well especially as you got to the middle portions. However it was still tasty. The outsides were just cooked more to my liking. My smashed potatoes was solid. Not a big potatoes guy. But the baby enjoyed them. My wife New York strip ordered medium was really good too. She ordered it medium and they cooked hers perfect. After tasting mine with the sauce on top she came to think her steak was missing something and a tad bland, but still tasty. I told her to ask for steak sauce but like many she gets intimidated and don't want to offend by asking when In nicer steak establishments. Her Mac and cheese may have been the best Mac and cheese any of us have ever tasted. Insanely good. The game plan was to share with the baby. She maybe got a few bites until dad over here started sneaking bites. My wife also said the Brussels sprouts was the best she has ever had. I did not try those. Not for me. The baby did not approve either. So I'll take her word for that. All in all a very intimate price. A tad pricey (or bill was a smidge over a $100) but you do get great food and a great experience so it was a good value. Soon as I walked in, the ambiance and environment felt luxurious. I loved it, very classy and the service was swift as well. Our drinks were refilled a lot, our waitress really was amazing. So we haven't ever dined here in my nearly two decades in Louisville. Thought we'd branch out from our favorites and try Redlands Grill. We arrived for an early Friday night dinner and immediately loved the open kitchen, ambient lighting, dark wood, and overall atmosphere. Our waiter was prompt with menus and drinks and continued to check in throughout our dining experience, so 5 stars on service! Being Lent, I opted to try the salmon, though was shocked at its overly high price point here. I ordered the baked potato side. The salmon piece was thick and a nice portion, perfectly grilled, but had some heat to whatever seasoning was crisped on top. The baked potato was huge but overdone with the skin too tough to cut through. My husband (trying to be mostly on a Keto plan)ordered a pork tenderloin option with an Asian glaze and steamed broccoli. He said it was "o.k" but nothing wow level and despite the great service and nice date night atmosphere, the food was more than just inflation level overpriced for the flavor and quality. Still trying to find something to rave over, I ordered the molten chocolate cake. Surprisingly it came as a large hunk of warm bundt cake (nothing molten) that tasted overly flour heavy and had an odd taste even when trying bites with the vanilla ice cream. I bake excellent desserts at home so admit I'm a pretty stringent dessert critic, but can't recall the last time I wasted a rare dessert order out because it literally just wasn't good. A chocolate dessert at that! By comparison, we could've eaten at Varanese or other locally owned fine dining establishments and gone without alcohol or appetizer as we did here and had a better variety of good sides and entree choices for considerably less money and better food taste and quality. Friends say weekend brunch is good here, I'm not sure with the variety of great local brunch spots if we'll give this spot a 2nd try. Wanted something quick, yet delicious and (semi) healthy. The atmosphere was relaxed but well appointed. I took a bite of the broccoli and finished the whole dish because it was amazing. Now the tacos: I'm usually hesitant to get a taco at a "sit down" type restaurant because they're usually the best at a local taco joint or food truck. TBH These were the best I've ever had! The coolness of the pico and lettuce wer perfectly balanced with the Adobe steak flavor. And I loved the corn tortillas as they do lower the sodium of the dish somewhat. Now the name itself tell me a lot. As I was told that the food was that to be compared to the food at a high end restaurant. The service is to be regarded to a five star restaurant. I did not complain because it was lunch time and there was only 3 maybe 4 tables and 2 patrons at the bar. If food is burned and disgusting at a slow time. Then I can only imagine what it is like when it is busy? I Went ahead and had the calamari and had the eggs for a starter. Nothing fancy with the eggs as it doesn't take a chef to prepare them. The calamari was soggy the dip they give you was tomato paste with something green thrown in for show. The main course was the steak that I had. It was expensive and not worth the price. It was dry and tough . If you like to chew on worn leather then this is the place to come and taste something that is expensive and bad. I only hope that they step up their food game out here on this side of town. Came here to celebrate my mom's birthday because she had been dying to come back for a while. They did a great job in making her night special and getting us everything we needed. The Spinach Queso is top tier, great sharable plate for 3-4 people at the table. I don't get steak too often, usually only on special occasions, and decided to get the strip (ordered medium). Hadn't been to J. Alexander's in several years so my boyfriend and I went this past Friday night at 7:30. There was luckily only a 10-minute wait despite the restaurant being very full and crowded. We ordered a house salad and wine to start, and the salad came out promptly - it was large, definitely enough for two to share, and was deliciously fresh. For our dinner, we ordered the steak and fries cooked medium rare, and the rack of ribs with fries and Cole slaw. Both orders were large portions, the slaw was a heaping serving. The ribs were the stand-out item with the bones literally sliding clean out of the meat without using a fork or knife. The steak arrived more of a medium rather than medium rare but it was still enjoyable so we didn't complain. Both of us LOVED the shoestring style fries; such a great accompaniment to our meals. Total for all was $74 before tip, which was highly reasonable for the quality of food, portion size, and nice, friendly, unstuffy, service. Salad $6, wine $10, steak $23, ribs $28. I really liked the low lighting and ambience when I walked into Redlands but my overall experience was just mediocre. My boyfriend and I recently moved very close to this place so we decided to try it. It has a very odd feel between and upscale restaurant and a chain trying too hard. I ordered the Ahi tuna and it was prepared well and had good seasoning. My dining partner had the New York strip. He said it was good but honestly he has had better steaks at an Outback. For 2 entrees and one glass of red wine, the bill was about $100 before tip- ouch! Now if I said we split a bottle of wine- that would be different. If I am going to spend that much money going to dinner, it better be excellent. I would much rather go to a local fine dining place. Was staying at the Fairfield in around the corner and decided to give them a try. Sat in the bar area as a party of one and had great service despite them being pretty busy. Loved the big selection of bourbon (big list) but again this is expected in Louisville and Kentucky in general. Decided on the Steak Burger comprised of Ground beef tenderloin and ribeye, Tillamook cheddar, grilled onions and Kiawah Island dressing. It was pretty good (not just the double of Woodford Reserve bourbon talking either.) The shoe string fries were REALLY good and hard to stop eating (yeah that might have been the bourbon talking). Since I worked out at the hotel that morning I thought I would try dessert. BIG DELICIOUS mistake. It was some Carmel Cooke crust ice cream caking thing that was HUGE. I had no idea it was this big. You would need at least 2 but better yet 4 to take on this monstrosity. I barely made a dent after a good 15 minutes of effort. So much for the workout.
