This is always our go to restaurant when we can't think of any where to go. The service is outstanding and the ambiance is nice. It's lovely for a date night or with friends/family. The food is delicious ! My favs are the NY strip steak, crab cakes, ribs, salmon dip, and of course their carrot cake. In the summers they have a large ice cream and chocolate dessert. I was hopeful about this reservation. This was our delayed Valentine's Day dinner and hadn't been here. The service was good. The place is a bit loud. The food was disappointing. Spinach queso is good - just what you'd expect. I dove in for my first ever surf-n-turf. I asked for medium rare and it came out way too done. They took it back and the next was fine. But OMG the salt...so much salt on the steak and the lobster. The lobster was sooooo salty I had to scrape the seasoning off it. I couldn't even finish the steak. This is a top 5 restaurant in the city. My wife and I eat here pretty regularly and have never had a bad meal. The steaks are always cooked to perfection and the service is top notch. The restaurant is always incredibly clean and staff are always professional. This is one of the few top notch steakhouses that is someone easy to get into on short notice, which is both convenient and surprising. In my experience, Redlands by J. Best food and staff in Louisville! The atmosphere is perfect for an evening for two or group dinners. I have always had great service and the steaks are cooked perfectly. I have also had the salmon dish and it is also delicious! The prices are very reasonable for the quality of the food and service you receive at this great restaurant. Today was another disappointing day and probably my last at this establishment. My server was divine. Attentive and witty. We couldn't have asked for better service. The hostess staff was questionable. We had a reservation for 4 for 815p. We arrived at 735p. I checked in and was told that 14 other reservations were ahead of us but they would check us in and see what they could do. The couple that was with us happened to be a white couple. They made zero mention of a reservation and were seated immediately. We followed suit and sat with them. Our reservation was called and I received a text at 8p letting us know our table was available. I got up and told the hostess we were sat 20 minutes prior with the white couple that was also a party of 4 with no reservation and she was speechless. I didn't make a scene or ask for the manager as it wasn't worth it but I did make the decision that night to never return. The atmosphere of this place is radiating classy and calm, great place to come to for a date(; the dimmed lighting and candle light sets the mood for the perfect place for dinners. I have been coming here for years now and the experience is just the same but the food has changed quite a bite but it is still tasty. We came around 9:30 and they close at 11, it was to be expected no wait and the service was okay. I would highly recommend trying the Steak Maui and their Mac and Cheese has changed throughout the years but it's still good to eat. Calamari and Smoked Salmon Dip is an appetizer must try. But this restaurant has the best dessert your belly could ever crave, their steaming hot but so worth it carrot cake! My first time here. Chose this restaurant based on reputation of J. Alexander's. We had a reservation and were seated in a lovely booth by a window. We started with a new appetizer. It was a generous serving of southwestern spring roll, with corn and black beans and came with a sweet almost Asian style dipping sauce. They were delicious. Mom had a cosmopolitan to drink and it was a very large cocktail served beautifully in a large martini glass and even came with the extra in chilled glass to top off the original. I ordered prime rib (end cut) with mashed potatoes. I've never seen such a huge portion of potatoes before, lol and they were so hot and smooth. Yum yum!! The meat portion was HUUUUGE!! It reminded me of the giant meat portions on the Flintstones cartoon! #brontasauruscut perfect cut of meat, so tender and cooked to perfection. Moms French dip was made of prime rib as well and she enjoyed it. We had to have dessert and chose the carrot cake. Served warm with a warm, heavy pour of cream cheese frosting. Oh. My. Goodness! Decadent and even for a sweet eater like myself, the portion was enough to share, happily. Our server, Sam (Samantha) was EXCELLENT. She was around just enough and knew if there was an issue that needed attending. She kept my iced tea filled which I know is a job in itself. The manager even came by. This place is wonderful, lots of beautiful wood work, a gorgeous wine cabinet on display, very old school steak house style but not pretentious. The service was very fast and team work was just as fast. The steak was seasoned perfectly, cooked accurately, delivered hot. Fresh bread you could smell that was definitely baked in premises, real cream butter. A generous potato. Will definitely return. We went for a late lunch on a Friday, it was nearly packed in there but we were seated immediately. Don't miss this hidden treasure of a restaurant. The drinks were clean and fresh. This was my second visit to J. Alexander's. One thing I absolutely enjoy about this place is its decor. I like the wood and red / burgundy leather. It feels very comfortable and warm. It reminds me a lot of my all time favorite restaurant since the early 90s named Houston's. And interestingly, there are menu similarities in terms of their offerings (excluding the taste). I noticed a few reviewers mentioned their prices being expensive. Right now I can't recall what I thought about their prices. Considering my two visits I wasn't blown away with what I ordered, but it was good enough to where I'd return. Both times I sat at the bar. The bar is one sided w/ plenty of seating. The bar area itself is spacious with several tables to accommodate a lot of customers. I've not eaten in the dining area (yet), but it too appeared big when I took a peek. The first visit I ordered the French Dip w/ their shoe string fries. The second visit I went with the Flank Steak Tacos w/ the fries again. I did enjoy the French Dip. The roast beef was tender and flavorful. I recall the bread being OK, not seeming to be a noteable complement. The Steak Tacos were OK. The order did come with three and the amount of steak meat was plentiful and tender, but they lacked some real flavor. The presentation was good. The ingredients looked fresh with vibrant colors. And the shoestring fries...where can you go wrong...love these. Although I wasn't blown away with their lunch time items (3 stars), I would like to return to try their dinner and in the dining area. The nice decor and the fact it reminds me of my favorite restaurant (Houston's) earned them an extra star. read more

Returning here three years after last visit, and since it changed from J. A's to Redlands. Honestly, it's not the same. Prices are, but cleanliness and ambiance is not. Salads are way oversized, even as a meal. Cut the size and the price. Neither me or my friend could come anywhere near to finishing ours. Service was so, so, as we had a trainer. I know we all have to start somewhere/someday, but he needs to learn attentiveness. Woodwork is in bad shape, i.e. all banged up. Even safety strips on stairs are old. Handrail was all sticky, and the restaurant has a smell of uncleanliness. Sat in a booth, and seat bottoms were unlevel and uncomfortable. Ample free parking, and courteous staff. Food was very good and served promptly, however for the price, there's other better options nearby. Won't go back again. read more

We went to J Alexander's, for our anniversary. It was our first time. I had heard a little bit about it, but really didn't know what to expect. We got there and they were running a little behind. The restaurant was really crowded. We went to the bar, to get a drink while we waited. The bar area was jam packed. It was very hard, to get to the bar, but we got our drinks ordered, then went to wait, in the lobby area, where we could watch the food being prepared. We stood next to a family that was enjoying watching the cooking process. They go to J Alexander's for most special occasions. The husband said the burgers were great, which I had heard. The wife was vegetarian and recommended the veggie burger. I had already decided to get the salmon and wild rice, because they came highly recommended. I wonder how the veggie burger compares to my favorite veggie burger, at another Louisville restaurant. I'll have to go back, to find out. My husband got the burger. We also decided to try the deviled eggs, even though we are always skeptical that they can beat mine. The deviled eggs were a pleasant surprise. They were very good. The bacon on them was incredible. The burger was delicious. I got a bite. It was also very large and it's nice that they cut it, in half. My salmon was perfect. The wild rice was very flavorful, but had I known it was served cold, I would have asked that they warm it up. I ate the leftovers warm, and it was wonderful. I also got a side of broccoli, because I wanted some veggies. They were simple and tasty. I had looked at the menu online and knew they had Carrot Cake, but I never expected they would give us a free slice, for our anniversary! Thank you, for that! It was scrumptious, and we were pretty full, but ate it all. The Old Fashioned I had, from the bar, was tasty, but very strong, for me. They have a nice sized wine list and we had a very nice Pinot Noir, with dinner. The restaurant has a nice open, but cozy feel. There are lots of large booths. I think I would black out the windows that show the neighboring establishments. Seeing the bright Kohl's sign took a little away, from the ambience, but it was a minor thing. I joined a few friends for lunch here. I didn't get to take any pictures, but I ordered an ahi tuna salad. It was quite good. The tuna was tender and greens were bright. A few too many wontons for me, but still yummy. We split the calamari as an appetizer as well and it melted in the mouth. YUM! Not a fan of the breading or sauce but the calamari itself made up for it both. Service was nice. Nothing was exceptional, but all was good. read more

J. Alexander's Redlands Grill prepares one of my all-time favorite meals. I have had it at several different J. Alexander's and it is always the same - always perfect! The grilled Salmon served with Orzo & Wild Rice is amazing! The Salmon is always on point. The Orzo & Wild Rice is an absolutely insanely delicious side dish that I could eat for my main course. It has so many layers of flavor. I rarely order the same dish two times at a restaurant but every time I go to J. Alexander's Redlands Grill I order the Salmon with Orzo & Wild Rice. I cannot go there without getting my fix. The restaurant is very nice inside. The servers are always professional and well versed on the menu. J. Alexander's has a great wine list. My husband's pet peeve is not being given a steak knife when having steak or prime rib, but not here. They offered me a steak knife without being asked. Made reservations for 5, at least 5 days in advance. When seated, one person had to sit in a chair in the aisle at the end of the table. The chair was too high for the table, seat was deep and had about 6 inch wood back. The chair was extremely uncomfortable, especially for someone with back pain. A server tripped on the chair and broke a glass which I thought glass was in my hair but I did not find any glass. The table was not large enough for 5 entrees and drinks. Ordered the vege burger and ate about 1/4 of it as it just fell apart. I came home and ate oatmeal. Spoke with the manager and did comp meal. The server did try his best and did a good job. I can't believe this kind of seating with blockage of aisles would meet fire standards. I would have left as soon as seated but I did not want to disrupt other people at the table. We stopped in for lunch one day and the food was good but the service could've been a little better. We were one of maybe three tables but the service was a bit slow and our server forgot my starter salad. No worries though because overall the experience was ok. I ordered the burger medium rare and it came out medium rare. It was delicious and though it's pretty hard to mess up a burger I was pleased that this place didn't anyway. Anyway the restaurant is very clean. The service is ok(I'm chalking up the slowness and forgetfulness to the end of the shift since we got lunch close to 2 PM). The food was good but a little pricey in my opinion. Give them a try and decide for yourself. I'm guessing it's more of a dinner spot anyway so I'll probably be back to try dinner sometime read more

Today I had one of the best service experiences ever! And not just at J. Alexander's, but at any restaurant. Our waitress, Leah, was exceptional. She never let anyone's drink get below halfway empty, was consistently attentive but never made us feel rushed, and had such a friendly, patient disposition. Upon realizing we were celebrating a birthday, she updated the bill so that our carrot cake was free and even sent us home with an extra piece :) When we asked for boxes, she brought us sauces in to-go containers without us having to ask. Been a patron here a long time even before the name change.. came in tonight my daughter brought her boyfriend... so after he discovers he's misplaced his card we had to sit and wait for him to go look for it. Mind you were had been inside almost 2 hours at this point. My daughter takes her therapy dog every single place she goes. She was with us the entire time. No one on the staff had a issue until the manager came up and was very aggressive and rude and put us out... bad attitude and of course I was offended with how he was towards us. We were literally waiting on her boyfriend to return! I went on and ordered key lime pie cause it's great and we were just sitting and waiting so it really was unnecessary for him to throw us out and embarrass the fuck out of us. She had been wonderful the entire visit and I literally held her to comfort her. Wasn't bothering a soul - and again how he treated us was the issue. Garbage. It was garbage. We didn't make a scene and get upset and ugly when they served me ROTTEN shrimp- which made me sick. Didn't get pissed when they brought me out BURNT salmon.... But how he spoke to us. That did it. I've been to J's (that's what I call it) more times than I can count. My most recent visit was last Friday night. It was a special visit because my little brother was home visiting from Colorado and he wanted a juicy delicious steak. My mom and I choose J's every time because it's amazing quality and quantity for the price! All three of us started out with the deviled egg appetizer and three Bombay Sapphire martinis. We also had some of their amazing sourdough bread. The eggs were killer! They were topped with a special salt and some candied bacon pieces. The sour dough came out in a basket. It was thick cut and nice and warm from the oven. Now onto the martinis! They know how to make a mean drink, and what you get for $12 is awesome! Not only do you get a whole martini glass full, but you also get a mini carafe with almost another whole cocktail. Plus it comes with three jumbo olives. Yes! I decided to go with the smaller cut of prime rib and a loaded baked potato. My mom and brother both had the filet mignon and loaded baked potato. When dinner came around we also decided on another round of martinis. All of had our steaks cooked medium rare (Now that's how a good steak is prepared!) and they were cooked to perfection. Succulent, juicy, tender, delicious. I'm a major steak fan (even though I don't eat it that much) so if I'm going to indulge is some red meat it had better be well worth it. I know J. Stopped in for dinner last night, no wait. I havent been in here in a few years and I really like what they've done with the place. The vibes are good and bar is stylish. Our waitress approached the second we sat down to take our drink orders and appetizer orders. I hadn't even put my course down yet, let alone had a chance to open the cocktail/wine menu or food menu. I appreciate being attentive but it felt a little pushy. We ended up getting the calamari appetizer which was spicy and delicious. I ordered the Ahi Tuna steak and my boyfriend ordered the ribs as an entree. When our entrees came out, mine was an ahi tuna salad rather than the steak dinner. I told my server and she standoffishly said ok and walked away. Another waitress came by and apologized and put my actual order in. It wouldve meant more if our server had apologized or something at any point, rather than another server, but she never did. By the time my entree came out, my boyfriend was done eating his entree so we did not get to enjoy them together. My smashed potatoes were yummy but my tuna steak was cold inside, like very cold. Being that we spent $90 on dinner and didnt even have any alcoholic beverages, It would have been nice if management or the server had offered to take the entree she messed up off the check or at the very least, offered a free dessert to make it right and provide good customer service. It was so cold I could see my breath. I ordered the cheeseburger and it had a weird flavor. The fries are shoe string fries and they were not hot, barely warm. My husband ordered the prime rib and smashed potatoes and he was happy with it. They brought me coffee to warm me up and it was mildly hot. I just would not come back.
