We couldn't get into the first restaurant we tried but the host recommended we go down the street to J Alexanders After one drink at the bar, they had our table ready. I come for the service. I stay for the consistently delicious food. I meet someone interesting ever time I sit at the bar, including the staff. My favorite encounter was a mellow Mom talk conversation with Halle Barry. (Sp?) not sure about spelling but I'm sure it was her! I've also heard rumors of many country stars eating here. I also enjoy the locals hanging in the bar...everyone from realtors to politicians to Ironmen (seriously.) I wish I could afford to come more! Had a great time at the bar last week while in town for work. Mathew was as good a tender as you could ask for all while being very courteous to everyone. I had some great conversations with some local Nashville folks. I'm in town on business and so my crew and I went here for dinner after we wrapped our filming. Great choice! The telltale sign of a well run kitchen is that you can smell the aroma pouring out when you walk in. I kept it simple and went wIth a burger. It was seasoned to perfection and even had a slight smokiness to it. That was an unexpected touch. The fries were super thin and also seasoned perfectly. I took a grandson for a 25th birthday dinner. I had made a reservation for 6:30 on a weeknight and we were seated at once. We both had iced tea - no Manhattan or Martini for me that evening - and so were soon ready to order. Grandson had the Steak & Fries and I had a special Fried Shrimp. Those little shrimp, and there were a lot of 'em, were delicious as were the fries and the slaw. Grandson seemed to enjoy his as well. He had a Carrot Cake for dessert. It came with a candle, but was not free. I ate quite a bit of it and it was good. When we arrived the place was not at all crowded, but it soon filled up. Our waitress was good, but I had the feeling we were being rushed. I guess that a no-booze table needs to be turned quickly! It a nice place with good atmosphere, but I continue to prefer the J. Lunch at the White Bridge Road location on 1/3/23 was fantastic. The restaurant was very clean. The food came out timely. My friend & I both had the salmon, and both were perfectly cooked. Often restaurants over-cook the salmon but these were very moist & flavorful. Brittany our server was very fast friendly & efficient checking on us several times throughout our dining. I got a carrot cake to go for my wife and we felt it was the best we've ever had. Extremely moist and flavorful. Great over all luncheon. It's not an inexpensive place to go for lunch but I felt we definitely received the right value for our money. read more

My wife and I used to visit this location regularly before Covid struck but even the last couple of visits before then were not particularly good visits. After nearly four years, we decided to go give them another try last night and boy what a disappointment! She ordered the filet mignon and I got my usual, the ahi tuna. She ordered medium and it was so rare it was blue. It was even heavily bleeding out on the plate before she cut into it! My tuna was completely raw inside. I understand that a properly grilled ahi steak should be fleshy inside but this was cold and chewy inside and barely seared. I love sushi but this was not a sushi meal. Anyway, we very politely explained to the server what was wrong and sent them back. When returned, they were both VERY well done! Hers had no pink inside at all and my tuna was cooked completely through. Both of them were just short of burned on the outside. I guess the "chef" leaned on them while they were on the grill to get back at us for complaining. In spite of that, they were still tender and tasty enough that we didn't send them back again. All that said, we will NEVER EVER go back again. We dropped over $125 on a very dissatisfying meal and barely got any sympathy from the server or the manager. See ya, JA! It's been real! read more

The quality of J. Alexander's has been consistent for at least 25 years. Service and food are always impeccable. I've never had a meal or dish that isn't absolutely delicious. The pork loin with bang bang sauce is my favorite, along with the spinach dip and a salad with their homemade blue cheese salad dressing. I was very disappointed with the take out service when my husband and I ordered from the White Bridge location. He ordered a large salad and I had a small salad and a fish sandwich. When I picked it up there was NO meat (chicken) on the large salad. I did call to see what they could do since there was no protein on the salad and the amount was less than the usual size you get in the restaurant. The receptionist answered and told me the manager would call in a few minutes to let us know what to do. We NEVER got a call or any kind of refund or credit for another meal. I would think twice before ordering from them again. A mistake like this should have warranted an apology and a call at the very least. The restaurant was not very busy and few were eating in the restaurant or cars in the parking lot. There was no apparent reason why someone could not have gotten back to us. read more

It is Super Bowl evening and oh what a time my coworker and I had at J. Alexander Restaurant. I wasn't sure what to expect because this was our first time dining here. My first impressions are positive, from the staff member who opened the door when as we entered the restaurant to our waiter (Eddie), he was very pleasant, professional and attentive to our needs. My coworker ordered Mr. Jack's Crispy Chicken Platter and I enjoyed Raffaelle's Old World Lasagna. There was so much delicious food that I believe that we could have fed an army...ok maybe not an army probably at least 4 adults. Love the music! The environment was very clean including the bathroom and I appreciate that the staff was compliant with COVID regulations. My husband and I decided to meet at this restaurant for lunch this was our first time eating in a restaurant since Covid. we sat at the bar and was happy to identify that they had safety measures in place. My husband and I both ordered salads and wine , I ordered the strip steak Caesar salad. The state came out well done when I ordered medium. I sent it back after 15 minutes they bought me a new salad. I then had to ask for the dressing and sides that i ordered with my salad which causes and additional delay. J Alexanders is one of our favorite restaurants. Ordering take out has been a nightmare lately. The first time I called to keep from using their horrible online service, the person answering the phone tried to shame me into using it and left me on hold for 20 minutes. The second time I tried to use the on line service it took 30 minutes and eventually denied my order even though I changed my password 2 times. Total time wasted was one and one half hours to get a simple order. I even asked for a person or phone number to help me solve the on line problem, no help. Absolutely fantastic customer service and attention to detail, plus excellent food. We showed up at about 6:40 for a 6:45 reservation, and the restaurant was completely slammed. There was some confusion about finding us, even though we were sitting near the hostess stand, and we ended up not being seated until about 7:20. The manager(?), Felicia, was very apologetic, and offered to comp us a dessert. We had been completely patient, and uncomplaining, so this was just pure customer-satisfaction on her part. And their carrot cake is one of my favorite things on earth, so yes, thanks, we'll accept that! After being seated, we ordered wine and food. Got the wine in a timely fashion, and the salad (yum. Their blue cheese dressing is perfect) came out pretty quickly. We then waited...and waited for our entrees, probably about 40 minutes or more. Noticeably long. Felicia came by to check on us, saw the empty table and said, "how was your dinner?". I kinda chuckled and said, "I don't know, we haven't gotten it yet." The look on her face was priceless...horrified, full of apologies. Food came out really quickly after that and was very good. Filet with Bernaise, cooked perfectly, and the ribs, which were yummy and enough to feed me for about a week, were tender and falling off the bone. Anyway, when the food came out, Felicia insisted that they comp our entire meal because so many things had gone wrong. Again, we never complained, so this was just her making sure that our experience was a good one. And it was, because of her efforts and the great food coming out of the kitchen. Well done. Service: The hostesses up front were professional and courteous, everything seemed to start out great until we were actually seated. Our waiter was possibly new but he was so quiet we could not here him, my cocktail that I first ordered came 5 minutes after our appetizer came out. The bread we asked for was overly dried out and the crust was difficult to chew because it was so hard. Didn't see the waiter for a very long time, waiting to order entree's? What was going on, it was really weird. I won't go into more detail, you get the idea, the entire experience was very disappointing. I agree with a previous review, the ladies bathroom was not clean. There were a couple of waiters we viewed buzzing around the dining room, they even grabbed our waiter for us to get the check. After we were done eating, we literally sat in front of our dirty dinner plates for over 15 minutes waiting to leave. Finally found our waiter cleaning glasses and talking to another waiter. Hadn't checked on us once since we first got our food. Food: Except for the bread, our food overall was good. Steaks cooked exactly right temperature, salads were good sized and crisp. Was told yes..I came in to place my togo order and had forgotten my mask. I said "do I need my mask to come in"? The Hostess said it was reccomend. So I went to my car to get it and saw a guy come in right before me and "no mask". I wasn't going to say anything, but I did. I asked her why she allowed him to come in with no make on and she very rudely said "it was reccomend not required. She didn't say that to me. Despite our ever-growing list of one-of-a-kind restaurants to try in Nashville, this micro-chain location has still ended up as one of our regular, go-to, neighborhood joints. It's literally walking distance from our home, and offers a reasonably comfortable setting (though it can get loud), decent service, and a solid if not inspired menu. I recommend trying to get a table in the "sunroom" that looks out on White Bridge when it's especially busy/loud. We tend to get the cheeseburger more than almost anything else, because they're consistently delicious here, but we've found most of the menu items we've tried to be pretty reliable. There is a little secret J Alexander's is keeping from you, and it's their one yet delicious brunch offering. A delicious quiche with a side salad and breakfast potatoes. If this one dish is telling of everything J Alexander's has to offer then I will be back. Admittedly I hadn't gone because, when I have the option to go out to eat, this place just never crossed my mind. Plus I didn't realize there was this location on White Bridge, which lacks the college crowd of its West End sister. Here the crowd was mostly locals, and it was a much more relaxed environment. The bartender was on point (because as you may have noticed in my reviews I enjoy sitting at the bars of restaurants, so many interesting people...) and it was because of him that I tried this surprise breakfast concoction to begin with. The side salad is dressed with champagne vinaigrette and I must have again on any salad on their menu. They have some of the best French-press coffee you can get outside of a coffee house. Look out Houston's! You have met your match! J.Alexanders so happens to be the stepsister of Houston's. You can definitely tell by the restaurant's style and ambiance. They both sport that trademark classy atmosphere that get when you enter a Hillstone owned restaurant. I'm a regular at Houston's in Irvine,ca, been going there since I was in preschool and I completely adore the food both have to offer but J.Alexanders sadly has overtaken Houston's throne in my book! This one of the main reason why I love coming to Tennessee on my vacations. I was introduced to J.Alexanders back in the late 90s by my Grandparents, they always raved about this place and they so happen to eat here after church every Sunday. The first time I came to this place, I fell in love with it and I felt right at home(since they had almost everything I would get a Houston's). I always used to get their chicken tenders(which are delicious), but now that i'm older I have moved on to other things. For a starter, I always get their Caesar . One of the best Caesar Salads I've ever had in my life, They give you a great portion, and I deeply love the creamy garlicky dressing tossed in the salad topped with the their Parmesan cheese and fresh hot deep fried croutons . It's to die for! I may warn you,the salad portions here are huge!!! A side salad is equivalent to a dinner salad, i'm not joking one bit. These Salads here make the Houston's side salads look as small as those $1.00 salads at Wendy's. The true highlight of this place in my opinion is their Danish Baby back ribs! Much like Houston's, these are Fall out of the bone fork and knife ribs and they are smothered in their tasty Plum Creek B.B.Q sauce(which is slightly sweeter than Houston's), it's Coleslaw(I always substitute for their shoestring fries) and Tequila beans! Both side dishes definitely add to the meal making it delicious beyond words! These ribs have taken the Crown from Houston's! The only thing this place doesn't have is the out of this world Chicago Spinach dip! But hey, this Place proven it's self to be the better restaurant . I also have to say the Service here is Fantastic, after all this is a five star restaurant so what do you think you'll except? :D I truly recommend this place from the bottom of my heart! Warning: High-Standard of Service, you may feel the need to over-tip. This place feels like an upscale restaurant from the 1920's or something. From the moment I set foot in the door, it was first-class treatment all the way. During our brief dinner, we interfaced with everyone from the hostess, bartender, server & manager and were treated very well by all parties. They've raised the bar on customer service; everyone working here is very outgoing & friendly. They will pamper you if you let them. As far as chains go, this is what Outback used to be, before they went all "Applebee's" on me. I had a similar experience as Erin D. Their definition of 'medium' is on the rare side. Which is fine with me; why ruin a good piece of meat by burning it right? My friend's steak was undercooked to his liking and they were prompt about getting it fixed for him. Hrrrm, maybe I'm turning into a real food snob or maybe I just ordered the wrong thing because this place was just OK to me. I met my parents and my brother here for a birthday night dinner since my dad and I were both celebrating birthdays! Yay! The atmosphere is nice with a dimly lit room, swank decor - definitely felt more upscale casual. It actually reminded me a bit of a lesser Houston's. The menu also reminded me of Houston's (btw OH HOW I MISS YOU HOUSTON'S). Steaks were prominent on the menu, huge salad entree options, fish and chicken dishes for the people who don't like steak, and decadent desserts. I was kind of excited since you can't go wrong with this kind of menu. But it wasn't quite Houston's. I got the steak Maui because I thought, hey, maybe it is like the Hawaiian steak at the aforementioned establishment. It was a ribeye (I think) and cooked perfect medium rare. However, I found the steak kind of chewy and stringy as well as too fatty (which I know is par for the course with that cut). I liked the marinade and the flavor but I just wasn't in LOVE with it. The BF had a steak also and had very similar comments. Desserts were a treat! Chocolate cake with ice cream - HUGE and decadent. The carrot cake was interesting - more dense than usual carrot cake I've had and warm with melty sugary icing on top. There was literally NOTHING wrong with this. For once I actually took something home in a leftover box and ate the rest of that bad boy later in the night. Hey, twas my birthday, I can eat if I want to!!
