Only Ordered the Salad, but a Good Salad My date and I went to J. Alexander's for a quick workday lunch. It took a while to be seated (no complaints, because it was the lunch rush) and the table service made up for it because our server was prompt and efficient. We both wanted something light and landed on the same thing: the Thai Kai Salad ($16) with chicken, mixed greens, and peanuts tossed in a cilantro vinaigrette with Thai peanut sauce, along with a croissant on the side. It was a great salad and we both enjoyed it because the dressing was flavorful and tangy, had nice pieces of cold-yet-grilled chicken, and we left feeling full. I'm not sure if it was worth $16, but I can't say for certain it was not. One great thing about this salad was we were both productive at work and didn't feel sluggish. read more

Tried it last night for the 1st time. Really nice place, didn't love we got seated in a booth in the bar. We tried the deviled eggs as an app, too sweet. I tried the chicken tender platter which were good but tiny. Ton of delicious fries. Coleslaw great flavor but very fine shred, didn't love that. We also shared the steak burger which had good flavor but very dry. Service was efficient. Overall just ok and hated that after tip, I paid $65 for just ok burger, tenders, fries and deviled eggs. We stick to the prime rib and French dip sandwiches most of the time and we love their Mac and cheese! This time we got deviled eggs for an appetizer and they were topped with delectable pieces of candied bacon. Yum! Went for my favorite- Maui Steak for our anniversary. We had reservations at 5:30 to beat the rush. We were seated immediately and the smell was wonderful. We ordered cocktails and my husband ordered salad and I ordered soup. Holly brought them with 2 waters fairly quickly. Our water had no ice which I thought was strange and I asked about our cocktails so she said she would check. 5 minutes later she told my husband the person never filled the big cube ice tray so there was only regular ice for his bourbon. Our prime rib and Maui steak showed up 45 minutes after we ordered and it was room temperature. We sent back the prime rib only to get a new order just the same. The manager came to see us and offered a different meal which we declined so he brought a very hot au jus to help. At that point Holly abandoned us. No effort to improve our experience whatsoever. Most of the actual problems were probably due to the kitchen and our server could have made up with a little effort. Train your staff how to handle issues like this. We looked up the manager and he gave us a gift certificate but we had to go find him. Very disappointed. read more

Oh heyyy J Alex.. since my first step in this establishment it was love at first site. First parking is crazy during dinner time so expect to be walking a little. Walking in there is seating on both sides of the host stand. The kitchen is wide open right behind for you to watch the amazing chefs do their thing. Listen a reservation isn't required but out of the two times I have visited I'm super glad I did. Don't try walking in for dinner you will be disappointed. The host gives you a vibrating gadget (hey stay with me lol) a lot like Cheesecake Factory when they are busy. When they goes off you will be seated soon. I also love how all staff wears all black. There is mostly booths here or half booths. I think when your party gets big in number you get a table and chairs. Service is phenomenal. Side note I don't really use that word but I swear this place fits it. You take a gulp from your drink another one is given to you. You push your plate to the end of the table, I'm sure if it tipped over the server or backwait would be there to catch it. They are just that on point with service. Food. So I have stuck with the imperial shrimp as an appetizer because it's soo good,$15. Shrimp taste fresh and has a good snap to it. I have had the kc strip and mac n cheese. That butter on the steak is great, $34. Had the crab cakes (which are market price) nothing but crab and tiny bits of bell pepper. How do they keep it together!! Tried the Thai pork lion, it's so tender. And the Maui steak, I tend not to like sweet steaks so this isn't for me, $34. Drinks. Strong and very good. Tried the 913 which now is my favorite and the knickerback. That second one will take you there I asked them to add syrup and soda to make it girly. Price I believe $12-14. Dessert. That Power is (wait I'm thinking) idk a word for it but it's soo good. Kinda upset my company took it as leftovers without telling me. It's an ice cream cake that's layered by Oreo cookies and sprinkled with snicker candy. Caramel and pecans on the plate. A must try. Lastly please taste their pomegranate lemonade. You will get it kinda late as they juice the lemons upon order!! How neat is that! This is my go to and I will be bringing family when they visit. read more

Had dinner here while on vacation. Food was really good and tasty, very flavorful. Just be careful with the meals that doesn't have a price next to them. I ordered the crab cakes with shoe string fries. The crab was sweet chunky and tender. Salmon dip is bomb.com. The ladies enjoyed a their meals. The lemonade spritzer is to die for. So yummy! We made our reservations late on line. It would only let us do four people so we reserved two tables. They were really nice about it and seated us at two tables across one another with same check. My previous review was for J Alexander's. It was one of my favorite places in town. The last time we were here it had changed (even though the sign outside was still J Alexander's). It's NOT the same. No longer a 5 star experience. It's not horrible but when you're expecting J Alexander's it was a definite let down. Hands down the best restaurant in Kansas City, since Houston's departure (which would have made it a tie.) I've been eating here for over 20 years, and it always 99.99% predictable. Great food and great drinks. Doesn't matter if it is lunch or dinner or for business or pleasure. I would say the only change has been the patrons attire. It has definitely become far more casual as the years have gone by. I still think the location is by far the oddest, but it has worked because once you're inside you don't recall that a tire shop and a thrift stores are only steps away. The stop sign bringing you into the parking lot is almost 100% faded away making it beg the question where you are driving if you've never been here before AND the centers' landlord could pay some attention to the maintenance of the road and overall aesthetics. First let me say hands down I would come back again. Everything was great from the time we walked in until the time we left. With it being mother's day weekend the place was packed. We had a party of 8 and couldn't get a reservation online so reserved 2 tables of 4. The times were only 15-30 minutes apart. When we arrived the table for 8 was an hour wait however since we had two reservations we asked if we could have 2 tables near each other and they accommodated us. The tables were one after another, then a table came available across from us and they let our adult children move. Josh was our server. He did a great job. He was very attentive to our needs. I dislike when I have to keep asking for water. He say how much we enjoyed the water and got a bottle to set on the table. Since we had been eating all day I really wasn't that hungry but knew I wanted to try the Cesar salad and the crab cake. Josh advised that the crab cakes were heart portions. For $34, it was well worth the 2 of them with the shoestring french fries. My sister and I shared the order. The crab cake s full of crab not bread crumbs or crackers. The Cesar salad was also super delicious, I could taste all the fresh ingredients. The dressing was on hit. The water was so crisp very the delicious I wanted to ask for a bottle to go. My sister had the prime rib. I tasted it and it was bursting with flavor and very tender. The next day she heated it up. It was still very tender. read more

We have been regulars on Saturdays for many years. Food usually is amazing but today was disappointing. The fries that they are known for have changed and not for the better. This Nashville chain restaurant is excellent, with fine American food, including very fresh seafood, and with traditional dark wood steakhouse decor. The chain seems to do a particularly good job of training servers. Our server was Chad P. He was excellent. I would ask for him again. He said he had been working at J. Alexander's only for two weeks. For a young new employee, his professionalism was first rate. I have similarly noticed outstandingly well trained servers at other high end chain restaurants, such as Houston's, Gilbert's, and Capital Grille. Some of this city's locally owned restaurants could learn from those chains. I do not give a restaurant a preferential "pass" for poorly trained servers, just because the owner happens to reside in this metro area. J. Alexander's is very popular and becomes crowded in the evening, with possible long waits for tables, unless you arrive early. read more

Servers are all paying attention to you. Not just one but sometimes 3 per table. Had fish tacos with macaroni and veggie burger with salad and fries. Dessert chocolate bunt cake and pumpkin pie. House made lemonade is sour-ly delicious Fish tacos are perfectly fried and the sauce they have in the tacos really makes it taste better. Salad is good, but the fried croutons with it is just yum! Veggie burger is pretty thick, has flavor but isn't too dry. The fries are like drugs. Once you start you can't stop. Dessert Chocolate bunt cake is lovely. Perfectly moist and sweet that it doesn't overpower the vanilla ice cream. Sweet but not super sweet. If that makes sense. Pumpkin pie, is really simply done without added surger. The pie crust is wonderfully done where you can't tell where it ends and the pumpkin moose begins. The whipped cream on top is airy and goes great with the pumpkin flavor. read more

Love "J's". This is my out south alternative to Houston's, which used to have a location out south, but now it is gone. It is similar to Houston's because it serves of great quality food and service with consistency. I usually do it for lunch when I am out shopping in the area. Love their chicken sandwich, amazing juicy hamburgers, great soups, salads and pasta. Love the dessert- Key Lime Pie or Powerful stuff (huge slice of ice cream pie with chocolate sauce)! They will even make you a chocolate Hagen Daz shake to go! Love dependable service and quality food! read more

The smoked salmon dip was so Smokey that it only tasted like smoke, couldn't taste salmon or other spices. Even with just one bite of the dip the taste of smoke lingered throughout the meal. Always delightful! Certainly a place that is a darn-good guarantee of delicious food, lovely drinks and decent service. Staff: always professionally dressed in black and know their job and product. Appreciate the clean and precise presentation. Drinks: on the higher end of fairly priced with generous pours. The bar is always seemingly busy with multiple bartenders. Food: excellent example of what KC has to offer! Prices are on the higher side, entrees do tend to be a bit overpriced. That being said, the food portions are ridiculously generous and hearty. There is something for every palette - $13.00 for a chicken sandwich but served delightfully. Baked potatoes are huge (just make sure you remind the staff that you want a HOT potato - they tend to come to the table just "warm"). Ambiance is quite well-done. Low-lit dining with beautiful vaulted ceilings revealing raw wood ceilings. Gas-lantern lighting is a quick way to set the mood for the evening. Overall, J. Alexander's knows how to do make an evening meal worth your time and money. As always, we will be back again. read more

Visited New Year's Eve. After waiting for about 30 minutes we were seated. The waitress was excellent. My wife ordered a fillet with crab meat on it, my son and I had the Kansas City strip. He had mac & cheese I had fries. We ordered a reasonable bottle of wine. Waitress did a nice job of serving it. The food and service were excellent as always at J Alexanders. This is one of our favorite upscale KC area restaurants!  Patrons are often greeted with an open door and welcome by a hostess.  We keep coming back for the swank cozy atmosphere, friendly service, excellent food, and the big bonus...... premium martinis come with a spiffy side car!  We did have to send the fries back this visit because they weren't fresh, otherwise our meals were delish! This is the only nice restaurant we frequent that doesn't take reservations or call aheads for seating.  They don't have to, they're that good! read more

We came back again and asked to have Mike check on our table and of course, a great experience followed! J. Alexander's will always hold a special place in my heart. That place is held by their Steak Maui. There is nothing like it in the world. It is a well marbled ribeye, marinated in an incredible sauce. I can't even begin to describe it. I've made it at home before, but man, is this restaurant experience excellent. My wife and I come here for just about every birthday and anniversary and job promotion. We always order the same thing: start off with two Alex's Salads with honey mustard, two steak mauis and split a key lime pie for dessert. It is perfection. This year, my whole family came down. My mom was able to secure a reservation for 6:30, but she told everyone 6. No problem, they sat us at 6. It wasn't too busy on a Thursday night. Friday or Saturday? It probably would have been a 45 minute wait. We started off with the salmon dip. It was a very generous portion of salmon with about a dozen baguette crisps. They definitely did not skimp on the salmon. We ran out of crackers, so I took one for the team and ate a spoon full of the dip. It was GLORIOUS. Next came our salads. This year they added a little croissant. I saved mine for breakfast the next morning. It was very good leftover. The salads are fresh and the croutons are particularly incredible. The honey mustard is delicious also. I'm not sure what it is about their honey mustard that separates it from everyone else, but man is it good. There is little to none iceberg lettuce and a wide range of veggies on top. You must order an Alex's salad. Next up came our steaks. I ordered mine with a loaded baked potato, my wife got hers with the smashed potatoes. Both potatoes are delicious. My steak was cooked to perfection, medium rare. I ate about half of it and half of my potato. My dad got the prime rib and it looked really good. I may need to try that next time. Honestly, I doubt I'll ever get anything but the steak maui. Now for dessert. They comped me a carrot cake because it was my birthday. They didn't sing or anything; this place is classy. My wife ordered the Key Lime Pie and my sister ordered the chocolate cake with ice cream. We shared all of the desserts amongst six of us, and there was still some left over. The portions were very generous. The service was excellent. Drinks were never empty, the food was boxed up for us, everything was perfect. The ambiance was perfect too. I really like the interior exposed wood beams and lanterns and woodwork. It's a pretty cool place to look around at. The bill must have been several hundred dollars, but my dad covered it for us, so I'm not sure how much it was. My wife and I usually spend $120 for the two of us with tip. Our bill is usually $100. It is worth every penny. We keep talking about how we need to try their burgers sometime, they are only $10-$12, but we still only come here for celebration dinners. Everything was incredible. I have been here twice, once for dinner and once for a work lunch. Bring your wallet and expect to pay quite a bit when you eat here. Service if excellent, if your glass is half full they will have a full one ready and waiting. They are fairly knowledgeable on gluten free items, the chef or the manager will come out and speak with you about your allergy and what you can and cannot eat. The salad portion is small-if you order a salad as an entrée. I ordered the filet caeser and it was the size of a side salad and cost $21. The steak is cooked well, tender and flavored nicely. If you have a hard time seeing and require glasses, good luck seeing your menu. The place is VERY dimly lit-the people I have eaten with have to take out the phone flashlights to read the menu. I recommend reservations even for lunch time, we went on a Friday for a face to face interview with a potential employee and the establishment was busy. NOT COVID COMPLIANT - With their apathetic attitude about seating strangers next to each other, I'd hate to see their food handling practices. We went during lunch time and, despite there being a total of maybe 10 occupied tables in the entire place, they were seating people next to each other in shoulder height booths without any precautions. A group was seated directly behind us without any barrier - close enough that the backs of our heads were almost touching. On our way out we made a comment to the manager, but she seemed completely disingenuous and uncaring about our concern. In a Covid era, we expect high end restaurants like this to show a little more concern for their customers. We will be taking our business elsewhere to local places that actually take proper precautions. read more

Each time my boyfriend and I visit the Overland Park Grill, it is a "treat yourself day" and we go ALL in! That being said, for starters we always share the Smoked Salmon Dip and have a house salad. While both are excellent, the house salad comes with a croissant, unlike anything I have had before -- it is so flaky and fresh and drizzled with a sweet cinnamon sugar icing on top (it is almost dessert-worthy). For the entree, I, personally, always choose the slow roasted prime rib with smashed potatoes; both items will melt in your mouth and are about the two BEST things I have ever tasted. For dessert, we share a piece of the carrot cake-- this is not your average carrot cake, it comes out warm, and gooey, topped with an amazing cream cheese frosting! Now, I have never been a huge carrot cake fan, but I am in love with this cake!! If you have not had the chance to try this place, it is a must; the food is always incredible and the service is flawless! We cannot wait to go back! read more

Oh, meat! Who doesn't like a perfectly cooked steak? Need I say more? We also had the Very Best Chocolate Cake which came with vanilla ice cream. One of the most decadent chocolate cakes I've ever had. Service here was fantastic, our waiter was friendly, attentive, and made excellent recommendations for us. Oh my gracious. Wonderful experience!! That steak burger was like Christmas morning. And the sauce on the pork tenderloin - I had to hold my husband back from rubbing all over his body, it was so good. Staff was outstanding. They accommodated our kids like champs. Those chicken fingers were to DIE FOR and the butter noodles were a massive hit. Kids ended the meal with clean plates and a smile?!? Say what?!? And don't get me started on that chocolate cake. Used to be my favorite restaurant. Until recently there seemed to have been a change in managers and new bartenders. Been coming here for almost 6 years now but Ive only been there twice in the last 2 months and on BOTH occasions I have seen the staff remove patrons or refuse service due to being "too intoxicated". Both of the customers did nothing wrong and were enjoying their night. A man with his friends and a woman at the bar right next to me with her husband. Both of which seemed calm and content the entire evening. Both parties seemed bewildered they were being refused service. The manager seemed abrupt and rude both times. The most recent of the two solidified my choice to NEVER return. The bartender (who was extremely immature and loud) announced she was cutting a woman off loud enough to even interrupt my conversation with friends. Then the manager decided they needed to leave after they seemed confused! Our entire party of 4 agreed it was embarrassing for the staff and restaurant as a whole. A real shame the staff has become so power tripped and rude. Do not recommend. read more

What can I say besides damn damn damn. From the start of our meal with the spinach queso, to our house salads then the stars of the meal, titillating meat. I ordered the prime rib and my business partner ordered the strip steak. I'm a sucker for prime rib but I have to admit the strip steak was better. Not to say the prime rib wasn't good but the strip hit the spot. Both steaks came out perfectly prepared and was well seasoned. Anytime I am in the KS market this is a must eat. read more
