The prime rib was melt in your mouth delicious paired with a lovely Malbec wine from their extensive wine list made me want to go back. The steak gods today convinced me I'm wrong. Unfortunately they had a special seafood pasta today that I ordered and after a bite or two I realized the shrimp and other included seafood were RAW and it didn't even look like it touched heat at all. Y'all know that I go out to eat with the retirees from the school I worked at every month. In October, J. Alexander's was recommended as a venue for our December luncheon. I called and made a reservation without really knowing anything about the place. They said they would have to seat us at 3 booths instead of our usual large table. I went ahead and booked it, because I am not afraid to do things differently. I always send a notice out to the group with the date, venue, and a link to the menu, if there is one. While looking at the menu, I didn't see anything that appealed to me. Last night, I looked again to see if something stood out. Nothing really looked that wonderful to me, but I made a list of three possibilities. Then, I went to Yelp to see if they had any pictures. For this location, they had 291 photos of the venue, drinks, and food. Two of my choices did not look good in the pictures, leaving me with one choice that I was going to go with- like it or not. When we were led to our 3 tables, I was pretty pleased with the area. They were all close enough that we would still feel like we were with a group, regardless of which table we chose to sit at. Everybody in our group of 15 seemed to settle in happily. I ordered a dirty martini with blue cheese olives. It was $16.00, but this was a Christmas luncheon, so I decided to live it up. When it came to the table, I was surprised to see that it came with a little tiny pitcher in a bowl of ice that held a second portion of martini at a good icy temperature. In other words, you actually got two martinis. The martini was perfect. The blue cheese olives must have been made in house. They were very fresh and flavorful. I use a pre-made jar of them at home. These, today, were so much better. I guess I need to up my game. For my meal, I totally forgot about the item I had picked the night before. I asked for the Nashville Chicken sandwich with macaroni and cheese instead of the french fries. I am not a fan of skinny fries, so why bother with them? Boy did I make some great choices. That Nashville Chicken sandwich was the best one I have ever had. The breast was huge and so moist I had to look to see if it was actually thigh meat. The coating was wonderfully crispy and sensationally seasoned. The brioche bun was perfectly sweet and pillowy soft. With the slaw and ranch dressing on it, the sandwich was incredibly messy, so I broke the rules and ate it with a knife and fork. I just couldn't stop shoveling it in. It was more than delicious. The macaroni and cheese was also superior. It was really creamy and cheesy. The flavors were intense, but I couldn't pick out the cheeses it was made with. I asked Connor, our amazing server. He told me what they were, but I was in the middle of a food high and can't for the life of me remember. Speaking of Connor. He was one of those dream servers that you always hope to get when you are dining out. He was extremely polite. I have told you before how a group of retired teachers can be pretty hard on the wait staff. He took everything in stride. Even when we were all gathered around one table for our gift exchange, he politely served my carrot cake and coffee through the blockage with a smile. As far as I know from talking with everyone, there were no mistakes on anybody's order, except when one lady's salad ended up on the floor. That got cleaned up, and a new salad came out super fast. Since I mentioned the carrot cake and coffee, let me go on a little dessert rave. The carrot cake was sort of a sheet cake. It was about 8" x 8". It stood about two inches tall and was COVERED in a healthy layer of delicious icing. The cake itself was nice and warm. It reminded me more of a steamed pudding than a carrot cake. I loved it. Connor asked if anyone wanted coffee. I said I would love a cup. He brought me my own pitcher of French pressed coffee. It was so aromatic that the crowd around the table all started talking about it. It was a bold dark blend that was very robust. It was the perfect finish for a truly delightful meal. When lunch was over, Connor brought everyone their check. He explained how there was a tip added since we were a large group. I looked at the tiny amount that was on mine and added another thirty dollars. I hope everyone in our party added more. I am not kidding when I tell you what a dream server he was. In my opinion, even the most delicious food can not make up for a bad server. When you find a place like this that has great drinks, great food, and undeniably outstanding service, you leave feeling so uplifted and fulfilled that you can't wait to go back. Redlands Grill is a nice addition to the La Cantera area. The Double Stack Cheeseburger & Chicken Strips were excellent. I was pleasantly surprised with the freshness of the Wild Rice Orzo. We were celebrating my wife'a birthday here. When we walked in the hostess wasn't pleasant with her approach. She didn't worry about smiling or greeting. She took us to a booth to get seated. Joseph M was our server and he could have done a better job as well. Veggie burger with Mac n cheese- 3/5 the Mac and cheese was nice and the veggie burger I didn't taste it but my aunty didn't enjoy it much. Nashville hot chicken burger with fries - 5/5 we looked this burger and it was delicious. The chicken was great and the buns were fresh. The French fries were nice and thin. Carrot Cake - 5/5 it was amazingly delicious. It was nice and fresh. We loved it. Have seen a fly near our table had to wave it away. The ambiance was good but When you visit upscale restaurants you expect the service and the environment would be better as well. This was my first experience at J. Alexander's and they didn't disappoint. When we walked through the door we were greeted by multiple members of the staff. My wife and I had reservations, we showed up 15 minutes early and immediately shown to our table. Once seated at our table, we were greeted by our waiter (Aiden). Aiden did a wonderful job during the peak hours of the restaurant, kudos to the young fella. The atmosphere in the restaurant was amazing, the place was busy but not excessively loud. We started by ordering cocktails (The Matador & Jalapeño Wink) and Mexico City Spinach Con Queso. My wife order the Tuscan Steak and I ordered the New York Strip. It didn't take very long for our food to come out and everything was great. I definitely recommend this location and look forward to dining here again soon. read more

Came from my wife's birthday. We just moved to the north side of San Antonio and wanted to try something different. We should have just gone to Ruth Chris and gotten a classic meal. My wife ordered the filet mignon Bearnaise medium with Mac and cheese and I ordered the NY Strip medium rear with the same said. My steak had no real flavor and was cold, but I ate it nonetheless. My wife on the other hand had a worse experience. She had to send the stake back as it came out rare. She normally orders medium as it can be over or undercooked and still be okay. However rare for her is too much. The plate was cold so you could not even cut it up and finish it table side. We eventually asked for steak sauce which we know is a "no-no" because of the lack of any flavor. The sides did not do the restaurant any favors either. Maybe I am spoiled with good Mac and Cheese, but my wife said that even Chick-fil-A Mac was better as this version just seemed watered down. Overall we had a bad experience. The bill came to the price of an upscale restaurant, but the flavors and quality were lacking. The picture of the steak is after it was returned from recooking. The waiter tried to make it up to us by offering a carrot cake, but we just wanted out of the place and declined. There was light music playing from Bose speakers, so that was nice. Really nice night for a belated Mother's Day dinner. Reservations are recommended and were easy to make (and adjust). They are definitely a busy restaurant. We were seated within 5 mins of arriving. A large variety of wine by the glass or bottle. However, I went for a martini. I loved that they brought me the over pour in a baby carafe nestled in a glass of ice. This is my only negative ... the martini was not as tasty as I expected. We passed on the starters as there are not many ... but as you will see the plates were huge. We did not need a starter. And you will want room for the desserts. I had the prime rib sandwich. It was loaded with just the right amount of horseradish. The bun was toasted so it never got soggy. The sandwich was huge! I subbed the Mac and cheese for a side. It was so good ... creamy, cheesey!! Seriously recommend if you want to try the steak but are not up for 14 to 16 ozs. We also had the New York Strip with fries. I love shoes strings fries and these were the perfect consistency. The strip was cooked exactly as ordered. They have a 1600° oven for steaks. My son's eyes just rolled back on the first bite. They finished off with a dab of butter. We closed out with a chocolate cake. OMG! It was light, fluffy and melted in your mouth. It has an uptown millenial vibe, with features that boomers and Gen X will like such as ample booths and alternating lighting so that you can see your food even as your table feels cloaked in darkness. The food was good, the burger tasted like it was grilled in the backyard on charcoal. The grilled chicken on my salad, same thing. The spinach queso dip with pico was tasty. We are fans of J. Alexander's at the Quarry, so we decided to try this sister restaurant on the northwest side. The decor looks less traditional and more mid-century modern, but the menu is similar, and that's a good thing. The steaks are well seasoned, grilled, and topped with herb butter. We enjoyed classic sides -- baked potato, thin, crispy fries. The broccoli was steamed and topped with crumbled parmesan. The carrot cake is a showstopper dessert -- sweet, rich, creamy, hints of spice. We've been known to stop by J. Alexander's just for a piece of carrot cake. Upon arrival no tables available although several were empty, we sat at the bar. Bar staff provided water and took our drink order, drinks arrive at two different time about 10 minutes apart. We ordered, no issues. Meals arrived, barely warm, tasty, veggies (street corn) not cooked at all and cold. It would seem that the staff all very young do not wrk well together or assist kitchen to assure meals come off the grill and directly to patrons tables. He came to visit us from Utah and was excited to learn we lived close to this newer location. He said they had the best Mac and cheese and carrot cake he's ever had. We came on a Monday at about 5pm. The place was fairly empty but got a bit busier towards the end of our meal. I will say the service was good. Our waitress, I don't recall her name, said she had been working for about a month, and was very sweet and attentive. The food unfortunately was very underwhelming. My husband and I decided to share. I got the pan roasted salmon and he got the ahi tuna. My step mom got the cilantro shrimp and my dad got their crab cakes. I tried everything but the crab cakes and wasn't impressed with anything. The ahi tuna was the best out of what I tried. But the cilantro shrimp and pan roasted salmon were incredibly bland or in some cases over seasoned. The salmon came with a side of broccoli that tasted like it was heavily dunked in garlic and lemon, I couldn't even eat it, it was awful. The salmon itself was good, but honestly was just so bland. It said it had a white wine butter sauce but it didn't taste or look like it had anything on it. Maybe they forgot to add the sauce? I was too hungry to ask for the sauce. We also tried their Mac and cheese which my dad has truly raved about for years and it just tasted like straight onion. I'm not scared of strong flavors, but it just wasn't good. We took their carrot cake and chocolate cake to go. I do bake a lot so I am rather a harsh judge when it comes to baked goods, but they just didn't impress and for being a elevated dining these really weren't worth it in my opinion. I asked my dad if it was as good as he remembered and he simply said "meh." He was kind enough to foot the bill (I think it came to $180 for the four of us). An update and an upgrade for this restaurant! Marjan and I visited this restaurant two days ago, date night for my birthday. As on previous visit we were warmly greeted by the hostess, and delivered to booth seating. Madeline was mentoring a new hire, Megan, the two taking our aperitif order...as readers may know...dirty vodka martini. A word about the martini at J Alexander. This libation is served as a double at this restaurant, a filled martini glass accompanied with another vial of the liquid! We ordered one martini, Madeline suggesting she would bring the martini in two martini glasses. Wise lady!! And the martini...just the perfect blend of vodka and olive brine. Marjan ordered their sea bass, a generous filet seasoned then topped with jalapeno sauce, and sided with couscous. Now, some may wonder..jalapeno sauce? Friends the unexpected sauce added additional flavor, additional zing to the dish. My lady loved it. I ordered the tenderloin, ordered rare. My side was baked potato, loaded. I requested bernaise sauce on the side. The chef gets thumbs up for this delight. Perfectly seasoned, perfectly cooked with the desired, minimal crust, finished as ordered. I think this tenderloin was one of the best I have enjoyed. Melt in mouth, tender, perfect. This was a superior cut of beef, and the chef did the tenderloin true justice. We highly recommend the entree. As we finished our entree, the dear waitresses gifted a remarkable square of warmed carrot cake. This dessert is definitely worth busting the diet, it was that scrumptious! I would be remiss if I did not further mention our waitress and her colleague. Madeline and Megan were the compleat professionals. Of good nature, of good cheer, attentive and well versed on menu items. Kudos to these excellent ladies. This has become our go to place over the past few years. Started enjoying them back when simply known as Redland Grill. We try to get here every few months and the service is always great and the food consistently excellent. I have my favorites of the ribs, pork tenderloins and the brassiere chicken. Sides are all excellent but would recommend the tequila baked beans and the Mac and cheese. My wife is a bit more adventurous usually getting something off the nightly specials and often going with some seafood which is good no matter what she orders. We will typically order an Alex salad to split. Very fresh and generous portion size which makes it easy to share. My wife will usually get a piece of Key Lime pie to go. Again portions large enough that she often enjoys 2 nights in a row. Never go home hungry with the portions. Price is very reasonable for restaurant of this quality in this area. I am a regular at the Quarry location, so living 5 minutes from this location was a no brained...or I thought. Walked into some less than desirable greeting, yes this is a higher scale restaurant but last I looked the employees work there they don't own the place. I was made to feel a bit unwelcome by the looking me up and down by the big girl up front. Was seated quickly, and our server came out to "greet" us, that also lacked in friendliness and sincerity. I started to think I was wearing my "Party Naked" t-shirt, but I wasn't, I was dressed normally. Ordered the food and drinks, drinks came quickly as did the appetizer and our meals at the same time, I hate that. Server didn't even try to apologize for that, never batted an eye. Our food was cold and the entire time there I was given 2 refills, never did the server come to check or ask if we needed anything. My food was actually charred and cold, which was not very appealing. When I left I contacted the restaurant and asked to speak with a manager, I was told he was busy and he would call me back....that was a week ago. Our server was prompt, friendly, and courteous. She wasn't intrusive, yet sensed when she was needed. Our entrees, the New York Strip Caesar Salad w/a side of Mac-N-Cheese, and the Old Fashioned Cheeseburger w/a side of fries, were all delicious. I HIGHLY recommend the Mac-N-Cheese. It is a hot, cheesy, scrumptious dish. The not-so-good: the Mexico City Spinach Con Queso. I took off 1-star as the queso was barely warm when brought to our table, and at least 1/2 of the chips were stale. I would have taken off 2 stars since serving food at the proper temperature is very important; however, the rest of our meal was fresh and hot.
