Great service, good food quality, classy atmosphere and drinks! Great place to celebrate special occasions or just a spontaneous dinner night out. Always a solid dining choice for the area.

I wish I could give this place 6 stars! My wife and I decided to have a date night and try J. Alexander's and I can't believe we haven't been here before. First, the server was absolutely amazing. She was kine, funny and she made sure we had everything we needed the whole time. I finished my water once... And she came by 15 seconds later for a refill. And she apologized. She was so attentive. The food was also pretty awesome. I had the Nashville Hot Chicken Sandwich, my wife had sea food pasta. My chicken was so good. I haven't had chicken like that in forever. We finished it off with the chocolate cake. Thankfully, our server warned is that the portions were huge, because we almost ordered too. One was more than enough.

Service is fantastic, cocktails are well made and done right! The prime rib was a bit too salty for my wife's taste. My sirloin was average. The wedge salad was excellent and the carrot cake is the best ever!

Visited J Alexander's for the first time and it did not disappoint. We were greeted warmly and promptly, then seated immediately. We had reservations so I'm sure that helped. It's a beautiful establishment with soft lighting and lots of natural light as well. The fully stocked bar was a few feet away from dining area which was perfect so as to not hear what ever was on TV during dinner. Our server was friendly and quite efficient as he shared some of his favorites on the menu. We started with cocktails and a spinach dip appetizer. The cocktails were refreshing and the dip was delicious. Our entrees included a steak w/ smashed potatoes which was juicy and delicious. The other entree was a seafood pasta that included shrimp, crab and scallops. The pasta was creamy and had a little kick to it which elevated the taste. We ended with a generous portion of Key Lime pie. It was devine. The crust itself was to die for. Can't wait to visit again.

    STEAK MAUI

Heard lots of good things about steak maui! Wanted to give it a try. I must say that we definitely underestimated the portions. It was huge! It kind of had a barbecue flavored sauce, which I didn't really enjoy. Other than that, service was amazing. It was an enjoyable dining experience!

Longtime lover of J Alexander's!! But the basse location is the only one I frequent. First time at this location. The vibe is very different. I feel like I am eating at a budget hotel restaurant lounge. Food was good. But the shrimp even seemed different at this location from the other. Service was great. I can't knock them for that. I don't know. Maybe just not for me. Go try for yourself.

    Dirty Martini. Delicious.

Amazing atmosphere and exceptionally professional staff. We were lucky to have Marlysa taking care of us , she went above and beyond to make my wife feel truly special on her birthday. A particularly memorable touch was when the chef personally came to our table to wish her a happy birthday. That level of attention really stood out. We'll definitely be back.

Our first experience at J Alexander's was not at all what we were expecting. The restaurant was beautiful. We had a wonderful server who made the most delicious martini I have had. Sadly everything that came out of the kitchen was a huge disappointment. Caesar salad had potential to be great but way too heavy on the anchovies. The Maui steak was a disaster. Not once but twice it arrived at our table looking like it had been microwaved. Management apologized but the disaster was clear to us all. We may try again and order very basic items.

Tonight's dinner was perfect from the friendly staff, to the ambiance of the restaurant and of course the food and drinks. Highly recommend the wedge salad to start, it was delicious. The bread and butter were brought out super fresh and hot. But the star of the evening was the delicious Tuscan steak, cooked to perfection with a side of mashed potatoes. Excellently paired with a glass of Austin Hope wine. Ohh and don't leave there without getting the carrot cake. Absolutely the best in town !! Highly recommend you guys trying them out. This was the location off Fiesta Texas Dr.

What kind of dress code? Before I had read no phone zone but can't seem to find. I thought a finer dining establishment.

Business casual to dress-up is the best fit. Sure there are people in shorts and t-shirts but this is a finer-dining establishment.

    Is there outdoor seating?

Currently, no; But I did talk to management about it and it is something they want to install.

This is a very busy place. However, the waiter was simply incredible. Very attentive, very informative quite humorous. He was frankly part of the river walk entertainment. Extremely accommodating and instructive as well. You can't hope for much more from a server in Restaurant than this activity. The food is really quite good. How are the drinks. Extremely dependable and the portions are generous and equally wonderful. There are many places to dine in San Antonio. However, this is an experience not to be missed and I mean that quite sincerely. Kudos for a very, very well run well situated and well managed enjoyable place to dine on the river walk in San Antonio.

For starters, we had the French Onion Soup and the Wedge Salad. The soup was good, it was on the sweeter side though which wasn't my favorite. The salad was fresh, crunchy, and light. Definitely a highlight! For the main course, we had the 8oz Filet, 16oz Ribeye, and the Char-Grilled Jumbo Shrimp. This is what made this steakhouse standout to me. Everything was season and cooked to perfection. The side of the Brandy Mushroom Sauce was a great addition to the steak. The Filet was soft, juicy, and just perfect in every bite. The Ribeye was full of flavor and overall was a very good steak. The shrimp was some of the best shrimp I've had. The seasoning was impeccable, it was juicy, and tasty. For sides, we had the Baked Potato and Broccoli. The potato was a 10/10 and you were able to add more or less of what you wanted with the do it yourself style. I loved it! The broccoli was cooked great it was just very saturated in a pool of olive oil. Finally, dessert was a huge highlight and I loved every single bite. We got the Triple Chocolate Double Fudge Brownie. It was like eating a molten lava cake as a brownie. It was soft, gooey, chocolatey, fudgey, and everything you would want from a brownie and so much more. Our twelve guests ranged in age from 14-79 years, and everyone had a wonderful experience. We began with waters for the table, soft drinks, and cocktails/mocktails (Man Walks into a Bar, Amba No. 5, Don Alberto, Green Shug Collins). Due to our large party, we had booked a chef's tasting experience, which was spectacular. The appetizers were plentiful, flavorful, and unique. Our server, Anissa, did a wonderful job of explaining each dish-- its components, highlights, even suggesting that after finishing the beef dumplings, we stir the oil and yogurt together for an amazing pita dipping sauce. Our meal included four meats-- actually five, considering an off menu chef's creation for our pescatarian guest. It was such an immersive experience, I never took out my phone to capture photos of the food (or our group, sadly). Three desserts topped off the evening. When (not if) we return, we'll certainly request Anissa again. She made the evening a complete delight, even bringing out celebratory candles for our honored guests.

Overall, I'd say most of the people in our group probably would not go back, but I don't necessarily think that was because the food was bad or lacking flavor. I think a lot of us just weren't very accustomed to Mediterranean flavor profiles and this style of dining. Most of us really enjoyed the dips, the meats, and the desserts. Those were definitely the standout parts of the meal for our group. Some of the dishes in between were a little more questionable for us personally -- we tried everything, but there wasn't necessarily one specific dish we completely fell in love with. That being said, the experience itself was amazing. The atmosphere was so cool and unlike anything we had done before. Being served course after course and getting to experience so many different dishes made the meal feel really unique and memorable. All of the staff members who waited on us were absolutely fantastic and so understanding of some of our questioning looks while trying unfamiliar foods. Everyone was incredibly friendly, welcoming, and made the experience feel fun and comfortable from start to finish. If you already love Mediterranean food, this place may be right up your alley. I just think it's good to know what kind of flavor profiles to expect before coming, especially if you're newer to this type of cuisine. Overall, we still had a great time there.

Earlier in the day I took a walk through the King William neighborhood and stumbled on this beautiful old house with an inviting vibe. We were so glad we came back for dinner. We were a group of five with a reservation and from start to finish the experience was excellent. Our server, Raymond, was personable, friendly, and genuinely great at his job. He gave thoughtful recommendations and made the evening feel relaxed and welcoming. We started by sharing several dishes, all of which were spot on: Pears and Greens salad with lardons, frisée, arugula, radicchio, endive, Danish blue, and bacon vin - $16. Fresh, balanced, and perfect for sharing. Crispy Brussels Sprouts with maple, herbs, pecans, and cotija - $10. Crispy, flavorful, and addictive. Mac and Cheese - $12. Rich, comforting, and well executed. For mains, Raymond steered us in all the right directions: Mustard Glazed Faroe Island Salmon with warm fingerling potatoes, parsnips, mushrooms, frisée, and herb oil - $30. Beautifully cooked and flavorful. Tomatillo Shrimp with grilled Gulf shrimp, white cheddar grit cake, and tomatillo butter - $28. Bold and delicious. Loretta Burger with crispy prosciutto, manchego, arugula, tomato, grilled red onion, and smash sauce on a brioche bun. Choice of fries or tots - $18 (some had tots, and one had fries - tasty). Absolutely nailed it. Queso Fundido Burger with fried chorizo-queso blanco, charred poblano, and cactus salsa verde. Choice of fries or tots - $20. Indulgent in the best way. My dining companions enjoyed a variety of wonderfully prepared cocktails while I stuck with a Topo Chico. I still felt right at home. Overall, Bar Loretta felt like a world away from the tourist-heavy spots along the River Walk. Dining out has gotten so expensive lately and too often the food or service does not justify the price. Bar Loretta delivered on both. Great food, great service, great value. Highly recommend. We would absolutely come back. 5 stars

But at my age anytime you are over ground is the best occasion. I have heard it is real fancy. And it is. Do not come in Crocs and sweatpants. This is not that restaurant. It is that restaurant where you should make reservations. It is also a place that emphasizes presentation and service. We came right when it opened and we informed the hostess of our reservations. We were seated in the bar area. Once inside I was struck by its ambience. It is sleek, dark and dare say "sexy." Our server, who was extremely attentive came to our table and took our drink orders. My partner ordered an Old Fashioned and me, a Lagunitas IPA. Whilst waiting for our drinks I looked over the room. One thing I noticed was a barrier that separated the bar area and the dining room. The Social Hour is meant, to socialize. I saw couples leaning into each other. Another group were drinking martinis with a seafood tower, almost touching the ceiling. Conversations were had. Romantic glances were exchanged. It isn't a casual place like Bubba's 33 nor Texas Roadhouse. It feels like a place best suited for a date night or an anniversary. I'm wondering how the dining room area is? The Social Hour does offer some drink and small bites specials. We ordered the kabob with pineapple, brussel sprouts, and sliders. They were all pretty great. It reminded me of the same experience as in partaking in tapas. I would remiss if I didn't relay our service here, it was excellent. Our server, Holiday(I hope I spelled it right.) treated us like we were the only patrons there. I've gone to upscale restaurants where staff looks at you up and down. Or they try to size you up. This is not that place. Which was so refreshing. If this place went above and beyond my expectations why didn't I give it four stars? In my opinion I think that a place that creates an upscale experience needs to have a few beers on tap. Even places like Wing Daddy's or Chili's offers a few beers on tap. Secondly, the bar area seating feels a bit tight. I wonder when the dinner crowd arrives would you be in the lap, of someone else's conversation? I still highly recommend this place. The Social Hour area is perfect for a date or an anniversary. The service and food were both excellent. And I've never been to a place where you are given warm hand towels. It reminded me of that scene with Adam Sandler in "The Wedding Singer" minus Billy Idol.

For 73 years, The Barn Door has been more than a great restaurant; it has been an inexorable piece of San Antonio history. Last week, The Barn Door announced on Facebook that its final day of service will be Sunday, May 11th (Mother's Day). The Barn Door has been an outstanding steakhouse in the truest sense. They've never relied on gimmicks or culinary trends--they've relied on the tried-and-true flavors that have maintained a loyal clientele for decades. I'm taking about hand-cut, primal cuts of beef grilled over real mesquite, delivering that unmistakable South Texas char. I'm referring to plump, wild-caught shrimp from the Gulf Coast, the famous yeast rolls, and tubs of homemade salad dressings. If you've been there, you know how special the overall experience has been. I've read many heartfelt comments on social media asking why such a successful institution would cease operations. Well, dear reader, I have a unique insight into why. Randy Stokes has poured his heart into the restaurant, but he merely leases the building--not the land--from the Straus family. Approximately seven months ago, Mr. Straus decided to sell the dirt beneath the "Barn" to a real estate developer. The plan? To raze this historic site and erect modern condos. It's a familiar story of urban expansion, but it doesn't make the loss any easier to swallow. But before we close the door on "The Barn" forever, a glimmer of hope looms on the horizon. Randy Stokes and his team aren't necessarily hanging up their aprons for good. According to a reliable anonymous source, the team has expressed a desire to reopen The Barn Door at a new location, with eyes set currently on the city's North Side. I hope the promise of a new location comes to fruition, but even if The Barn Door closes forever, I will cherish all the wonderful memories of dining there with my parents and grandparents over the years. I will remember the ingratiating staff, the unique ambience, and the hundreds of delicious meals I've crammed down my gullet.

It's a sketchy area to walk behind the restaurant to the Speakeasy. Anyhow, I ordered the chicken fried ribeye, jalapeño twice baked potato. Now, the potato was great. I didn't care for the ribeye and didn't eat it. The salad was right out of the bag. Iceberg, shredded carrots and cabbage with 5 bagged croutons. What happened? It wasn't like that before. My cream spinach came out late, and we weren't charged for it, which was nice. My brother in laws filet was too done. He asked for medium, and it was medium well. He ate it anyway. They used to have a 6oz ladies filet, but they don't. The server wasn't perfect, but we lived. IF I return, I'll skip the salad, get the filet and potato.
