Over the weekend I was craving some Chinese food and I decided to mix things up and try a place I've never had before. That's when I landed on J Zhen. I went with a spring roll, crab rangoon, and shrimp fried rice. Compared to other places I've ordered Chinese food from here in Columbus, what I got here was pretty meh. This is a great lil neighborhood spot that offers up good food - amazing service (they make you feel like family) and awesome cocktails. We had the spicy wings and spicy fries and on both counts we did a clean plate club. LOL Their cocktails are awesome and ONE MUST have a little beer (hint it is not beer at all). The place is subdued and has a throw back vibe and you can tell it is just a spot the locals come to have some good conversation or watch the game while enjoying a good libation with awesome food. My granddaughter had the chicken fried rice and also cleaned her plate. It is great for larger crowds as they offer plenty of seating; the restrooms were clean and well stocked and the staff were absolutely some of the friendliest I have had the pleasure of experiencing. If you are looking for a good solid Asian restaurant with some of the best value for your dollars, come to J Zhen Asian Bistro & Bar... It's a good choice, especially for lunch. Occupying the building that housed one of The Capital City's former Asian gems, Lucky Bamboo 2, they haven't changed much inside or out. It's still a nice looking restaurant, clean and orderly with a small full service bar in one corner near the kitchen. The menu showcases all the typical American Chinese standards that most Asian restaurants serve throughout the Midwest with a few Thai dishes thrown in too. The big selling point here is the fact that their lunch portions that are almost as big as some other restaurant's dinner portions. Their lunch prices are low for what all you get so we're talking about a good bang for your buck here. Most lunch entrees are under $7 and come with your choice of steamed or fried rice and either soup or egg roll. Dinner prices are mostly under $9 with the most expensive entrée only being $13.95. I'm still looking forward to checking out their War Su Gai, Cashew Chicken and those Chicken Lettuce Wraps very soon... It's a solid 4 star eatery. Worth checking out sometime. Here's Some Additional Food For Thought: Starters: (A+) Zhen Wings. Wing aficionados listen up. You get 4 wings and 4 drumsticks served naked, not breaded and they are delicious! Crispy outside with some delicious spicy meatiness inside. They've got a nice heat to them and the scallions are a nice touch. (A-) Crab Rangoon are housemade and are much better than the average. Crispy pockets of crab and cream cheese filled deliciousness. (A -) Hot and Sour Soup - One of the better versions in Columbus. Could be a little thicker for my taste but then again, it's got that signature pungent flavor with a predominant black pepper flavor. (A-) Egg Drop Soup - It's hard to mess it up and it's hard to make it stand out. Good but typical. Main Dishes: (A) Hunan Chicken - Slightly spicy with a savory pungent brown sauce. Lunch portion looks like other places dinner portions. The vegetables were fresh and crisp and they don't skimp on the chicken either. (B+) Zhen Zhen Noodles. (A chicken version of Dan Dan Noodles) My friend and dining partner, Mark K. ordered this and let me have a try. It's pretty good but very heavy and I don't think I'd order if just for myself. It comes in a rather large serving bowl with lots of Lo Mein covered with a viscous spicy/sweet sauce full of ground chicken and plenty of onions. If you're with a large party, get one of these as your starter, share and thank me later. (B) Kung Pao Chicken - It's good but it's not my favorite version in town, being rather oily. I was disappointed that Lucky Bamboo left, since it had become our go-to Chinese place. Finally got a chance to stop in here, and I was pleasantly surprised. Met Mike G. for lunch, and was also pleasantly surprised by the lunch prices. We had enough food for our lunches and large takeaway boxes, essentially two dinner entrees at lunch-type prices. Service was good, friendly, and fast. The place has been spruced up a bit, but is pretty much the same inside. Parking lot has been re-lined, with fewer spaces, which was kinda weird. I had crab Rangoon and the Zhen Zhen noodles. (Apparently pronounced more like "zhing zhing.") It was lo mein noodles, tender diced chicken, and onions, in a moderately spicy, slightly sweet, hot and sour type sauce. Different, and very good. I had the rest for lunch at work later, and it was still great cold. The Rangoons were fresh and hot, and very tasty. Not much crab in there, but honestly, I didn't care- they were that good. A good dipping sauce came with them. The menu is smaller than Lucky Bamboo's, and is the standard Chinese-American dishes with a few Thai ones. Yo, the J Zhen wings was slappin! Thee best salt and pepper wings in town. IMO If you had a choice between egg roll and wonton. Egg roll has more of a wow factor. I think the wonton is good but it stand out like everything else. Wonton is still better than most places on the NE side of town. Triple delight, had fresh shrimp, the chicken and steak was real, lol over all everything tasted all super gourmet. Especially at the lunch prices. You're not gonna beat it. General Tso's Chicken, perfect amount of sweet and spicy, hella crunch crispy and was on point! Fried rice is kinda meh. My new go to place for this. Fried fish, it was really good, kinda wish they had the same salt and pepper seasoning like on the wings. Overall, favorite dish is probably King Pao and when I tried it here, it was like their brown sauce is like 3D? Some where in between rich and super dank. Some big ole perfect Potstickers. Try em! I came here with my coworker on a snowy day off work to try some Asian food. I came around opening time and the restaurant was empty except for us. The server was friendly and took our orders quickly. From other reviewers recommendations I had the crab rangoons for an appetizer. I thought they were just okay. I didn't taste any crab in the filling and there was something missing from the flavor (not quite sure what, but have tasted it in other crab rangoons). My entree was pad thai and it was also just ok. I did appreciate that the server was able to make it not spicy. My husband and I went to the grand opening on Sunday. We ordered the crab rangoon and egg rolls for our appetizer. From the bar we ordered a lychee martini and Heineken. Both were super good and the beer was stored correctly. For our main course we ordered the cashew chicken, side of white rice and wor sue gai, side of fried rice. SO GOOD! This isn't my favorite Asian restaurant to order from but it's pretty good and they don't overcook their shrimp! That's huge. We've tried several items that have all been winners. Yesterday afternoon was the first time we went to J Zhen Asian Bistro and bar. The waitress we had, Tiny, was incredible! She was very attentive and not intrusive! Our drinks were refilled without having to wait for a long period of time. She knew the menu and was able to answer questions about the food choices and not ask someone else to explain it for us! I'm not sure about my meal. I really liked the woe su GUI. The chicken was fried and not over crispy and the gravy over it had a great flavor. The steamed rice was cooked well and not chewy. So disappointing. Ordered Kung Pao beef. Instead I got about 5 stalks of celery, water chestnuts and green peppers with beef. Kung Pao beef has red peppers, peanuts, and scallions. Zhen is just west of the former Northland mall (for you old-school Cbus folks)/Department of Taxation building (for the newbies). There is plenty of parking around the building, making it an easy stop for carryout or lunch. Prices are right, with the lunch deals quite reasonable ($7-12). Our dinners were around $12 for a large size. The interior is clean and nicely decorated, with a full bar near the entrance. Plenty of TVs and Spotify playing in the background - very laid back neighborhood vibe here. Service was friendly and attentive. Okay, now that we've got the preliminaries out of the way, if you take only one thing away from this review, it's this: TRY THE SPICY FRIES. They are done up street-food style, shoestring fries tossed with sambal oelek and green onions. They are crispy, salty, spicy and DELICIOUS. I was pretty much face-down in these puppies from the first bite. (I'm trying to cut back on my fries intake but not last night, nope.) I bet these would go great with their chicken wings - gotta try those next. The rest of our meal was solid - hot & sour coup (decent), red Thai chicken curry (spouse liked), and sichuan shrimp (decent as well). They have all the classic Chinese-American dishses, and they tout chef-made sauces, and the sauces were definitely lighter than one would expect, but full of flavor. (Dang, I want those fries again.) How do you serve wonton soup without wonton DUMPLINGS? Seems like most of the Chinese places are doing this. A bunch of thick-as-pie-shell, tasteless, ugly noodles in a salty chicken grocery store, bouillon cube swill, amateurish at best. Same on you! Cheap but not worth the price. The Szechuan Chicken was so ill prepared that the wife asked "...what kind of meat is this supposed to be?" Definitely going downhill. Cleanliness: 5 star Welcoming/Service: 5 star Atmosphere: 4star Family friendly: 2 star this being said because the bar at the front of the restaurant is not very enclosed and there were people who to my understanding are regulars and the cussing was and loudness was very distracting and a little upsetting. Meal: 3 star and I give it this because however my sons meal was delightful the chicken and shrimp fried rice was very bland and with little to no flavor. My sons When noodles however when presented looked like vomit in a bowl at first but then he mixed it up and was more appealing. Huddled in the dearly missed Lucky Bamboo is this restaurant that's actually a bar with food. I tried to give it a chance, I really did. Fried rice is extremely light on vegetables, General Tso's doesn't come with any broccoli, and the soups are just salty and tasteless. Most egregious of all, I actually got physically ill from their Egg Foo Yong, not sure if it was the gravy or the burned omlettes, but it all came back up. Please skip this place. read more

After trying dozens of Chinese restaurants in the north side I have finally found my favorite! This place is like a little hidden gem In The linden/northland area. The food is just great all around. My favorite dish is chicken broccoli therefore I judge a Chinese restaurant on this dish. Long story short not only is it the best I have found in this area but I have also tried other dishes and they have definitely delivered! Price is super affordable and maybe even cheaper then other restaurantS with similar dishes but way lower quality. As far as the atmosphere .IT IS loud specially on game nights. This place seems to cater to the locals in the neighborhood so it's not for everyone.unless you like being surrounded by people having a few drinks enjoying some football and great Chinese food. We tried the Szechuan Green Beans, the Thai Curry Chicken and the Hunan Beef. All dishes were denoted on the menu as spicy (with little chili peppers). We generally like our dishes mild, not overly spicy. A flavorful dish is the best. We can say that overall these dishes were not flavorful enough for us. The Szechuan Green Beans were a tad stringy; but more importantly, it lacked the characteristic flavor typically associated with a dish from this region (i.e., Szechuan peppercorns and pickled cabbage). The other two dishes were OK; we would have preferred them to have been less timid and more flavorful. The dining room was relatively clean, the service was friendly and prompt and the prices were reasonable. read more
