Another Yelper was right- it is cafeteria style where you line up and tell them what you want. Easy and efficient. Sauces/butter/napkins etc near the seating areas upstairs and downstairs. Bathrooms are single occupants rooms- upstairs and downstairs. Decent bbq offerings and good sauces!

Visiting Nashville...my wife and I both wanted BBQ. The locals all recommended Jack's Bar-B-Que. We ordered the Combo (any 3 meats) with sides...Texas Beef Brisket, Smoked Texas Sausage, St. Louis Style Pork Ribs, Mac & Cheese, Potato Salad, and Corn Bread. It was delicious. It was enough food for two people to split. Our server Tiffany was super pleasant and she was a wealth of knowledge regarding the history of Jack's Bar-B-Que...she was an excellent "Brand Ambassador." If you're visiting Nashville and you're in the mood for BBQ, please consider trying Jack's Bar-B-Que.

We stumbled upon this shop before starting our night of drinking. I love the set up! Reminded me of a cafeteria where you get to choose your meats and sides. The pulled pork and brisket were tasty. I really enjoyed the baked beans. The toast and Mac and cheese weren't anything special. There is plenty of seating upstairs! Don't forget to grab bbq sauce!

Jack's Bar-B-Que came highly recommended so I had to try it out while in Nashville. The fact that I could smell the BBQ from around the corner let me know that I was heading to the right place lol. We arrived on a Saturday around 2pm and it was pretty packed but the line moved fast. I chose the Brisket plate with a side of Potato Salad & Baked Beans. Since we noticed there weren't any seats in the main dining area, they informed us that there was additional seating area either on the patio or on the second floor so we took our food and headed upstairs. The Brisket was pretty good and tender but I hate that they cut off most of the fat from my portion of meat, that's the best part. My friend ordered the Ribs & Smoked Chicken and both were delicious and seasoned very well. The Potato Salad and Baked Beans were okay but the Green Beans were delicious. Definitely check them out while in Nashville! With the location being right on Broadway, it's very convenient and you will not be disappointed!

Jacks has become one of my favorite bbq spots in Nashville because of their food and service. The staff are wonderful, friendly, and crack jokes while you order. I love it. The food portions you will not be disappointed. We usually share a 2 plate combo because it is sooo much food. We chose the pulled pork and brisket. I absolutely love their brisket it is tender and moist and needs no sauce. But they do make their own bbq sauces which I recommend trying. The brisket my boyfriend absolutely loves as it has a nice bark to it and just so tender. Their Mac n cheese is delicious as it is gooey. And hands down one of the better Mac n cheeses in the area. The fried apples were so good we were fighting each other over each slice because it was subtly sweet and delicious. They also have assorted soft drinks, beers, and of course the staple southern sweet tea. I love that they have multiple levels within the restaurant. I think there are a total of four floors if you count the upstairs outside patio to sit on.

Service: Even though there is a line out the door, service is cafeteria style so pretty fast average around 15 mins. You order and seat yourself downstairs or upstairs (indoor up stair seating/ patio). There's a CCTV camera that will tell you how many seats are available upstairs so you don't have to check. 3 meat combo (Tennessee Pork Shoulder, Texas Beef Brisket, and Smoked Texas Sausage): Plenty amount of sliced meat and sides to share between two people if you want to feel about 75% full. Beef brisket: So tender and juicy. Definitely get it. Tennessee Pork Shoulder: shredded pork meat was on the drier side, no sauce. Smoked Texas Sausage: was a little bit on the saltier side, but still good and juicy. Yelp check in: Dry Rub that you can redeem the whole dry rub bottle. It's not a little powder cup that I thought it would be. Sides: Cole Slaw: Very fresh and dish is light on the mayo. Corn: Cream of corn not corn on the cob. Great side dish, on the sweeter side.

Long standing barbecue restaurant right in the heart of downtown on Broadway. Cafe style order and pay. They offer a wide variety of meats and sides. Pork is pulled in front of you and chopped and is very good. Various barbecue sauces to choose from. They offer both soda, water, and variety of bottle beers. Plenty of seating both downstairs and upstairs. They also have single restroom for men and separately for women. Convenient and reasonable choice if you are enjoying bar hoping downtown.

Let's break this disaster down: Pros: 1. Cornbread was good. 2. Loved the historical items used for decorations. Cons: 1. Greasy! 2. The brisket and the ribs had no smoke flavor or marbling. 3. Do what the locals do for Barbque We asked the doorman where to get bar b que before leaving and he directed us to Jacks for brisket. The place is old and traditional, on Broadway, in the thick. There was no line when we arrived but we didn't have time to time. The butcher at the counter pulled the freshly prepared brisket out like it was a cake and sliced off the delicately prepared piece of meat. It was seasoned to perfection, cooked medium with a seared ribbon of fact that enhanced the flavor. We got sides: Mac n cheese, green beans, baked beans and cucumber salad. We were happy all around. Thank you Jack for not disappointing. We also walked the location and saw multiple seating options and all clean spaces, even outside.

Old school bbq place. You walk in, order at the counter while they put your food on the tray, and then you find a place to sit either indoor or outdoor. If it's busy, it's hard to find a place to sit. The people working there are very friendly. My only complaint is that the floor is always very slippery.

I'm really at a 3.5 but upped it to 4 because that pork shoulder really is GOOD! The place is right on Broadway in a prime location, but this small/narrow kind of a divey place was just that... a dive. That doesn't take away from the meat's quality and flavor. The usual white bread bun accompanied it, which I didn't eat, I was there for the MEAT! I'd probably opt to go elsewhere in the future, but glad I could try Jack's. It hit the spot at that moment.

Jack's was amazing.. Georgia has great BBQ and generally I skip brisket whenever on the menu as I get more bang from ribs or chicken. The food was tasty and the serving size generous. They had multiple sauces you could choose from. More space and seating upstairs and less crowded than downstairs. One of the few places where I didn't get that southern hospitality vibe, but maybe the cashier was having a bad day. read more

This is a very interesting place in downtown Nashville. I had the smoked Texas sausage along with potato chips and baked beans. I really like the sausage, and I'm not saying that just because I'm literally from Texas. The family and I did have to wait in line for awhile so yeah this place is popular; however, as soon as we ate, it was great. read more

I. Love. Barbecue. I think Jack's has a certain historical reference, and it deserves a trip. I had the Beef Brisket plate with Baked Beans and Cole Slaw. I wouldn't say I was underwhelmed or overwhelmed, just "whelmed." I'm not sure I'll request to go back, but I won't turn it down if someone suggests it. read more

The place to try BBQ in Nashville. You pick your meats (Choices: ribs, brisket, chicken, turkey, sausage, pulled pork); you pick your sides (from beans, potato salad, etc.), get your drinks (beer is cold), you pay your money. The sauces are in jugs after you pay, and you get a selection here, too - Tennessee (vinegar based), Carolina (mustard based), Texas (tomato based), Kansas City (smoky, my favorite of the bunch), XXX-911 (a spiced up mix of TN & TX), and Music City White Sauce (horseradish base). When we went, the meats were tender, and the sauces (at least some) were heavenly. A delicious experience, but I understand it can vary, depending on your taste in meat and sauce. Note: "cafeteria style" is a generous description. There is a huge line leading from the street to the counter, where there is one guy to give you your meats, another to dish out your sides, and sweet gal with a smile to take your money. Very bare bones. Not fancy. Just good food. Extra seating upstairs if the few tables in front are full. read more

I don't know what to think about you, Jack's. The first time I came here, about 18 months ago, I was simply blown away. I got the three meat plate of brisket, ribs, and pork, and was so impressed I got back into line and ordered another pork AND brisket sandwich. Fast forward to two weeks ago, and the pork is every bit as delicious as I remember, but the ribs were just....OK. Not bad, of course, but a bet chewy and without the strong smokey flavor I remember. That would be forgivable, but the brisket was positively dreadful. I had to drench the meat in vinegar-based sauce, which is admittedly tasty, but I don't eat BBQ for the sauce. I eat it for the meat. So what to do? The first trip was an easy five stars and the second trip was a disappointing three, so it seems only fair to average the two for what you see. It's a popular place, so expect to wait in line for a few minutes, but the queue moves fast. read more

BEST BBQ in Nashville!!! They also work great with you when you make a huge order. I came in today for wedding order and the manager there was VERY helpful and nice! They even comped my lunch just for ordering through them for my wedding needs! They have the whole southern bbq and sides, that are DELICIOUS!!! Just got back from dinner at Jacks. My 3-star rating is not a negative, rather a real assessment of Jacks. This place is right in the heart of down-town Nashville. Honkey-tonks and street performers on all sides. Jacks is a BBQ place, cafeteria style (one of the reasons for my 3-star rating). The people behind the counter were great, helping with decision making. I had the pork shoulder plate, my wife had the St. Louis style ribs. We had macaroni and cheese, baked beans, and green beans. Everything was amazing, but the ribs were the best! Juicy and tender, just fantastic. The pork shoulder was also great, the ribs were better. All the sides including the corn bread were excellent! The other reason for my 3-star is that there is not much seating. A group of maximum 6 can sit together. Maybe 50-60 people maximum seating. I highly recommend Jacks. If you like BBQ, you will LOVE Jacks!!! read more

I have found BBQ Heaven. It is here. Search no more. Worth the wait in line, seating upstairs outside is a nice oasis from all the people on Broadway. Prices are a bit high but for the location it's probably to be expected. I overeat the combo plate everytime I go and love every gluttonous bite. Texas brisket is to die for. read more

While in town for a conference, I was directed to Jack's upon asking for a good BBQ place. The service was great. The fact that they sold me a nice beer to go along with my meal was excellent. :) I tried all of the sauces and found each to be yummylicious!!!...could never choose a favorite. I will be taking some of each back home to Las Vegas with me. I ordered the three combo plate and selected the Sausage, Ribs, and Turkey to pair with my chosen sides of mac-n-cheese and baked beans. ALL were delicious!!! I was unable to eat it all (of course) in one sitting, so I took the rest back to my room with me and got back at it a few hours later. Great bbq. Upon reading some of the reviews about the customer service at this place I was hesitant to go, however, I had a great time there. The attitude is actually part of the charm. The girls are feisty and the gentleman that serves you is quite the character. I had the three near plate. Brisket, ribs and pork shoulder. That was probably one of the best brisket I've had. if you want inexpensive (for bbq), quick bbq, than this is the place. if you want delicious bbq than find someplace else. I had the brisket that was just pulled from the smoker. it had a beautiful red ring but was pretty dry and tasted a lot like lighter fluid smells. the corn bread was terrible. the potato salad was also pretty lousy. the sauces were only ok. the best part of this place was the very friendly cashier. never going back read more

Well this was our final destination after spending the afternoon on the honky tonk and a few beers.... Or 12. This was my first BBQ ever and I was not disappointed. Got the massive plate with 3 meats and mac and cheese and corn. The turkey was great, sausage too but those ribs woww they were out of this world. Fall right off the bone melt in your mouth, heavenly delight. The corn was amazing... Somehow. And the mac and cheese kind of soaked up all that beer. The BBQ sauce was insane, I mean I wanted to eat it with a spoon. Definitely a must hit after your drinken afternoon on the honky tonk. read more

A little over rated. Corn bread was dry. Beef brisket, chicken and pulled pork were all average. Green beans lacked flavor and were a bit over cooked. Mac and cheese tastes like if it was from A box. Food didn't have a personal or unique touch. Overall a satisfying meal but nothing to write home about. The location is the only thing making it a hot spot. read more

Usually a favorite for BBQ on Broadway. However really disappointed in Jack's. Felt like portion of beef brisket was less than ever before. Person preparing the meat was using the end piece and used it to prepare our two plates. Would been nice to have fresh meat and not try and give customer the end without opening new piece of meat. Also disappointed in the charge of $0.25 for cup of water. For the price I've become less and less of a fan. However people must love it because they still stand outside to get in. Much better BBQ choices in Nashville. Just not on Broadway. read more

Location & history more than the food. Not worth waiting for. Had the pork shoulder, ribs, & brisket with mac & apples. BBQ was no better than average chain options. I've had much better BBQ elsewhere with far less notoriety. The pork was probably the highlight and the mac was a disappointment. If there is no line, you're close, and you want BBQ you'll probably be happy. If you're looking for the kind of food you want to bring back friends just for the excuse of returning, I'd keep searching. read more

It was average BBQ. Sides were average. Pricing is maybe the best part. This place has been in Nashville since the 40s. The place is cafeteria style for the most part. Foam plates and forks and knives. Simple and payed back. You get a three meat combo for $17. Fast and easy if you just want to grab and go too. The have beer, soda and wine. read more

Food is mediocre at best. Brisket and turkey had no flavor. Brisket sandwich was literally just meat and bread, no onions or pickles. BBQ sauce came in a pouch, not made in house. Even the cinnamon apples were bad. What we think was cornbread was awful. Cucumbers in vinegar were good. Very disappointed! Opened a Yelp account just to warn people. read more

Awesome smoke ring on the fall apart, melt in your mouth brisket! My friend said her pork and green beans were good. The potato salad does not appear to be made in house, and the cucumber salad had no flavor. The cukes need to be sliced thinly with more vinegar and a touch of sugar. Baked beans were good and so was the cornbread, though it's not really sandwich bread. The bbq sauces were also good. I'd come back for that brisket for sure, but the sides were meh. read more

Google Flights recommended Jack's as a great Bar-B-Que place to go, so we went there, and it did not fail to please. AMAZING food. The place gets so packed, but it's understandable when you eat their food. I wished the ribs were more succulent and fell off the bone, but it was still tasty. read more

Written up as one of the best 15 barbecue places in Nashville, this was a little disappointing. We had the sampler plate. Cornbread, Mac and cheese, baked beans were all good. Brisket was pretty good but a little dry. Ribs were greasy, and pulled pork so dry we left it uneaten (btw sauce can't fix dry meat in my book) Style of the joint is eh. You order and pay, get your food then find a seat. Good for casual eating when you have to grab a bite and run. read more

Statement from Jack Cawthon, founder and owner of Jack’s Bar-B-Que, on the sale of Broadway building to Robert’s Western World. I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to own an iconic Broadway institution for more than three decades. Broadway is a wonderful place and a world-renowned destination. I’ve loved helping to build and be a part of that story, but now is the time to give others a chance to be successful and continue that story. I look forward to working with my team and focusing on our other restaurants (Charlotte Avenue and West Trinity Lane) and our catering business. Catering is how I began Jack’s. In a way, I’m coming full circle. I’m excited to take our beloved pits on the road to serve the Nashville area. Everyone loves Jack’s neon sign - our flying pigs over Broadway. We’ll be removing that sign and returning it to Joslin Signs, where where it was originally built, for renovation and refurbishment. Then it will go back up in a prominent place in our city. Stay turned for more information on that! I’m enormously grateful to the men and women who have run our Broadway location so well for years. Many will remain a part of Jack’s team, and others will be offered great packages. There is a lot of opportunity for everyone ahead, and l’ll be excited to watch us all grow from this time. Established in 1976.

Jack's Bar-B-Que was the first casual restaurant on Broadway to open after many years of decline on lower Broadway. Some people say that Jack's Bar-B-Que started the first revitalization of lower Broadway. This free standing building poured out a steady stream of hickory-flavored smoke, drawing people from all over the world on their visit to Nashville. Jack's Bar-B-Que was written up in the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, Southern Living, and USA Today as "The Best Bar-B-Que in Nashville, Tennessee". As demand increased for Jack's Bar-B-Que he added a second location on West Trinity Lane and a third on Charlotte Avenue.

Meet the Business Owner: Jack C.

Jack Cawthon A Community leader as well as an entrepreneur for 35 years. In 1976 recognizing the need for good Bar-B-Que. After much study & travel, with one cook and himself he open for business. Throughout his career Jack has always made time for community as a tireless volunteer, always first in line to lead a community project, work on fundraiser or serve in any need capacity. In 2004 the City of Nashville recognized him as a "Public servant" with a resolution. Always being encourage to run for office, Jacks reply has been the same. I want to remain independent and keep a clear vision, so I can enjoy pleasing people with "good food and a friendly staff.

Speaking of, there was only one sauce on the table, so I used that. It was a sweet sauce, definitely honey-based but not overly sweet like other honey-based sauces I've had in the past. The thing is I love everything honey-related, so I would definitely buy this to take home. It was so good, I was scavenging for brisket fibers on my plate. Sounds very promising, so we decided to return on sunday around 3pm. Good: No line at 3pm 6 different BBQ sauces Nice prices Seemed popular Free soda refills. Cool, fun decor. Bad: The ribs were so bad my girlfriend didn't even finish them. My Brisket sandwich was pretty good, though I would go with the jumbo size, not small (you get a better roll and better cuts of brisket). Mac and cheese was worse than Kraft quality. Wonderful experience! As visitors to the Nashville area for only 48 hours, we asked a local at the airport for recommendations and followed her advice to go to Jack's. The staff was friendly, and helped these weary travellers make wise choices. The pork was tender, moist, and had wonderful flavor. The brisket was delicious. We even enjoyed the sides. The portions were ample; we were stuffed. I don't usually eat bread, but enjoyed the cornbread so much I ate most of it and wrapped the piece that was left to take with me. So I'm an east coaster and I move fast... so the 45 min line wait was not ideal for me but I had to try it! The beans were my favorite side. I tried the turkey and the ribs, turkey was delicious. The ribs were tough. The bathroom needed a good clean. I thought the dining room was clean, hot as all heck but the staff was super friendly. I've had BBQ at a number of places in Nashville, and Jack's is consistently the better of the places. The food is good- I've had the brisket and the ribs, all are properly done, and they have a choice of sauces now that can vary it up depending on what you are in the mood for. The BBQ here is OK. I think there are many better places in Nashville, and to be honest, if you live here, unless the food is GREAT, why would you even bother with the hassle of downtown?
