Got into Jack's at 11:30 on a Wednesday and beat the lunch crowd. Which was good because there were so many choices that I had some trouble deciding. Finally went with the combo plate- 3 meats and 2 sides. Chose pork shoulder, brisket and smoked turkey. Yum, Yum and Yum. The meats were tender with a traditional smoky flavor. Also enjoyed trying the sauces. The meats didn't need it if you're a dry BBQ fan, but I like a good sauce, so I liked the variety offered. As for the sides- They weren't memorable, but this stop was all about the meat. We ate upstairs, and pulled tables together to fit our group of 12 without a problem. However, the upstairs fountain didn't work, so we had to walk up and down the stairs anytime we wanted refills. The guys and I grab a cab to escape the hotel we were at to eat some real southern BBQ. Being from California, you don't get real BBQ. I loved it! Jacks has very tasty southern style barbeque. Where do I begin? As a dude from the north (New York), it's very difficult to find delicious yet inexpensive BBQ. Usually one needs to travel to a high end steak restaurant and pay out the ass for the quality that Jacks gives for around $5. If I wanted BBQ for $5 at home, it would be some sort of meat with mass produced BBQ sauce dumped on top. Jacks BBQ offers quality, freshness, and an atmosphere that is unbeaten. I truely felt like I was in Tennessee when I stepped into Jacks BBQ. The Texas beef brisket was tender and delicious. And the homemade BBQ sauce was out of this world! Jacks BBQ is a go to when in Nashville, especially if you want great food with great service. The people working at Jacks were the nicest and most laid back people in the food industry... Then again, I am from New York! But in all seriousness, the food is incredible, the atmosphere is unbeaten, and the service was friendly and welcoming. I was a bit disappointed by the lunch we had at Jack's. I came with great expectations - good reviews from friends and lured by the video on YouTube. Maybe the other location(s) are better, but the Broadway location was under-whelming. We had the pork shoulder sandwiches with mac & cheese (me) and coleslaw (my wife). The mac & cheese was tasteless and the coleslaw was too vinegary. The pork was greasy and had bone-bits (so don't chomp down too hard or you may spend your vacation time in a dentist chair). The place is cafeteria-style - you go through a line to pick out what you want. The place was grimy looking and bare-bones. Staff was bored looking and non-communicative. All-in-all, I suspect we could have found a much better BBQ experience if we had known what we know now. read more

I had family coming in from Australia for my wedding and the weekend of we decided to take them downtown and to give jacks a try. We had heard a few things here or there but my family wanted to try some southern cuisine. I will agree I don't really know what the hype about this place is. We waited in line (which was fine we enjoyed people watching and it was a Saturday night) but once your in there there's barely any wiggle room. It was hard to fit a larger group of people no more than 10 mind you at one table. Which isn't a huge deal overall but it would have been nice to be together. The food was nothing you leave remembering. All very bland in taste I've had better Mac and cheese from a box. And the meat was okay. Yum!!! I had the brisket plate with Mac and cheese and potato salad. The brisket was really good!! Other friends had ribs and sausage. All was great! The best part is the bread you get with it. Everything here was pretty much average. Ordered the Tennessee pork shoulder with potato salad and Mac and cheese for the sides. My friend ordered chicken with green beans and Mac and cheese. The sides and pork shoulder were ok. My friend loved the chicken and said she would go back just for the chicken any day. For the past few days we tried to get in to get food the line was with either to the door or out the door and down the block. We planned to be there at 11:30am and our plan worked! We got in right before the rush. Unfortunately while we were giving our order they were also doing take out orders. We stood in while for a while and one of the staff forgot my order because he was doing so many things at once. They definitely need more staff to help with ordering. I feel like this review may fall on deaf ears, mainly because it is a popular BBQ spot and its on Broadway so you'll probably end up going anyhow. Here's my take anyhow; There's a sign above the cash register with a quote from the New York Times, allegedly commending Jack's BBQ with the best customer service and a "friendly staff." Mind you, this "review" mentions nothing of the food and the post was dated -2004. Something must have been lost in the last decade+ because the service and "friendliness" of the staff was sub par, or 3 stars. Sides were good. Ribs are not just on bones but many of them. I could take a bite out of a rib and spit 10 out into a spittoon. Didn't are for the BBQ sauce either (original) but I later realized that the one I would have liked was actually called "sweet" (tomato base) for some reason. I dunno. When I see original, I'd assume tomato base would be that. It was okay. Edit: Thank you for the response Jack. Yeah, I'd look into those ribs. The plate I had were extremely hard to eat because every bite had many pieces of bones in there. I had to eat these ribs with over-the-top prowess and I shouldn't have to do that when eating ribs. Fish, I could understand. I've never had ribs like this though. Still wish I could have tried the tomato base sauce, but I don't have any plans to go back to Nashville soon. This is now my third time in Nashville coming from Chicago, and every single time I have to stop at Jack's Bar-B-Que. If you are a fan of smoked meats this is your place to try out, because their food is all you can imagine. I usually get the combo plate because 3 meats is better than just trying one! My photo consists of beautifully cooked Smoked Texas Sausage, St. Louis Style Ribs, and Smoked Chicken with a side of Mac & Cheese, Cole Slaw, Mashed Potatoes, and Corn Bread. A family member recommended Jack's to us so we had to give it a try. We were not disappointed. I had the 3 meat with sides but only wanted the meat. They had no problem with just a 3 meat platter and discounted the price of the sides...most places don't do that. Since I am not able to eat those sides it means a lot to me when eating establishments take my eating needs into consideration. It was so much food and it was amazing? The brisket was tender with a beautiful bark. The ribs were tender and juicy and the Texas sausage was good too. I can't have the sauces so I can't say about how they were but my husband loved the one he had with his pulled pork. There was a line to start and the lower seating area was full but there was still a fair bit and of room upstairs. The staff were pleasant. Would definitely go back! read more

BBQ ribs, the pulled pork , the beef, yup all of it was delish, & the sides we had were the mashed w gravy, green beans (bomb.com), mac n cheese! Ok. Let me start off by saying that I'm from Texas and this is my first time in Tenesse.. I heard the BBQ is very good. I ordered the two meat plate. I got brisket and St. Louis ribs. The brisket was very dry.. The ribs were pretty tasty though. My wife got the chicken and turkey. The chicken was super dry, the turkey was better but dry as well.. we paid almost 50 bucks for sub-par BBQ for two. We waited in line for about 30 min to top it off. It was waaaaaay worth the 20 minute wait in line. I split the plate between the pork shoulder and the beef brisket. At the risk of being a total Tennessee heretic, I will go on record as saying the best combination was the (Texas) beef brisket with the (Kansas City) sauce. I read here that the beans were not to be missed. I'll disagree there. I've had just as good out of a can. The cole slaw was a nice low-fat foil to the nice collection of meat on my plate. The subject of barbecue sauce styles is highly subjective, but I tried the Tennessee style sauce (vinegar-centric) and I just couldn't go there. But the KC style sauce was very good for me. The line was barely out the door when I got there (around 7:15 on a Saturday night) but was about 15 people deeper when I left about an hour later. I've been trying to find a really good BBQ place in the Bowling Green, KY or Nashville, TN area, but so far have struck out, until a friend suggested heading to Jack's... We went on a Saturday night, and the line was all the way out the door. I was a little bummed about the wait time, but decided, I really needed some BBQ. That's about the time that the line moved along enough for us to go into the actual restaurant. It was filled with tons of signs, and a book for you to record your visit. So the wait time, albeit long, isn't boring. We ordered our food and proceeded to head straight up stairs to enjoy our food! I ordered the pulled pork with Mac N Cheese and Baked Beans, and my meal came with a side of cornbread. I was so stuffed I couldn't eat all the food, but everything was superb! Words can't even explain how delicious this meal was! I tried a couple of the BBQ sauces, but (obviously) my favorite was the sweet BBQ sauce. This place was so good that we wanted to go again the next night, but opted not, seeing as that would be a little over kill. I visited this place last weekend on my first trip to Nashville. I was dying for some good southern food and a local recommended Jack's BBQ as one of those landmark bbq's in Nashville. He suggested ordering the ribs and the brisket. The brisket was just OK. The ribs and the cornbread were the best food I tasted there. The sides were nothing special. If you are going to this place it is simply for the meat. The staff was extremely friendly. When I went the place was PACKED, but we found seating and there was additional seating upstairs. They have like 12 sauces so it was cool to taste all of them (and they were much needed to counteract the dryness of the brisket). Overall I would recommend this place but it is not worth the 30 minute wait that I experienced. There are definetly other good bbq joints in Nashville that could do the same job. read more
