2 Tender Basket with Lil' Fries
    Akanksha G.

Okay I'm not going to lie, I expected this place to be crap because I wasn't a fan of their bbq, BUT I was incredibly surprised at how wrong I was!! I was craving some fried chicken and decided to order from GrubHub one evening. At first, I didn't put two and two together and realize it's the same as the BBQ spot, but recognized it once my driver was headed my way. The moment I realized, I had pretty low expectations. I ordered the Kickin' 2 tenders basket with a side of fries, and holy smokes, I couldn't have been more wrong about my initial assessment! The chicken was crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, and the sauce was actually spicy without being overwhelming - just the right kick, as the sauce said! The fries were pretty good, not too greasy, and the side Lickin' sauce definitely elevated the flavor. It also ensured that the meal wasn't too spicy and cooled off the Kickin' sauce. It also came with a cornbread that was warm and flaky, and had a butter pack that I highly recommend using. I absolutely LOVED my meal and will definitely give the place another chance in person!

This chicken is DELICIOUS! I got the two spicy chicken tenders basket. It comes with a side of your choice and a sauce of your choice. I don't know why I was expecting Nashville hot chicken, so when I bit into this chicken, it wasn't that. However, it was doused in a very satisfying hot & sweet (not too sweet) sauce, so I was happy. It was slightly reminiscent of Asian flavors. Huge pieces too. I got it with the smoked mustard sauce- very good. The queso mac & cheese was great- it had a slight kick to it which I love, but it was a bit too soupy rather than creamy. The downside was the cornbread (ordered separately which was supposed to be three pieces, but it was one huge piece, and then there was also a piece in my basket so I don't know if it was supposed to be in there). The flavor was fine, but it was super dry and crumbly. It fell apart with the slightest touch. I wanted a nice hearty bread I could pick up, slab butter all over and hold in one hand while I had chicken in the other. That couldn't happen. Overall I definitely want to come back, get the spicy chicken again, and also order some bbq because I did not realize until I showed up that this is located inside a restaurant called Jack's Bbq!

Kickin Chicken Tender Basket Top - August 2022 Bottom - October 2023

Not sure what happened to the quality of the tenders here, but tonight was such a let down. I've been a customer of Jack's Chicken Shack since they first started up as a part of Jack's BBQ in 2020 and my favorite thing about them was the Kickin Chicken Tenders. Whether in a sandwich or as a basket, they were always amazing in portion, texture, and taste. Over time I did notice the size of the tendies had decreased, but they were still delicious enough for me to find them worth the price. Today, they were a complete disappointment. Dry meat, breading that was soft and falling off, and the kickin sauce was obviously just drizzled on top of plain tenders that seemed like they have been sitting around. I don't know if this is the standard that they are adhering to for cooking their tenders now or if the kitchen just didn't want to cook up new tenders and toss them in sauce like it should have been done. Maybe this was a one-off, or maybe this is just what to expect from now on based on some recent reviews, but I don't intend to come back.

Random find after a Kraken game, and which was better? The game or the chicken? This chicken let me tell you, soft, perfectly moist inside and crunchy outside I don't know how they did it. Me and my girlfriend got spicy and regular, with the house sauce and the garlic herb ranch. Beautiful medley with the fries and did I mention cornbread?? You are missing out until you go, you get a half a pound of tenders with said fries and cornbread SCORE. Go Seattle, go kraken, go jacks chicken shack. Service and interior too very friendly, clean, enough room for everyone great vibe. We unfortunately had to be somewhere so did take out but would've loved to stay.

I wanted some food and found this place. I actually thought Jack's Chicken Shack was different than Jack's BBQ....it's the same place. I kept walking around and yeah I found it! So by looking at the place it's a BBQ Joint with all the fixings. I will say this...the ladies at this place are top notch. The customer service I received was great. I forgot what it felt like to be taken care of....great job! Now to the food..... Ribs / chicken were decent...Mac N Cheese / Cornbread was ok. You get 2 sides with the meal and cornbread counts as a side item( They should include the Cornbread with the meal). The BBQ sauce you pour on yourself and the sauce alone was alright. The Peach Cobbler.....they must have thrown it in the oven for 5-10 minutes and gave it to me...I didn't expect it tasting like that...it was really good. Now I have to say this....it's a BBQ Joint in the Westlake area so I put that into consideration. All in all....if you want some BBQ swing on by and grab a plate

Original chicken sammy. It's supposed to have coleslaw on it. Definitely lacking :(

First time going to Jack's. I got the Original Chicken Sammy and my husband got the Kickin' Chicken Tenders. We both ordered the greens as our sides. Good: My sandwich was super crispy. We got it to-go and by the time I was able to eat it (we had a short 15 min walk back to our hotel), it was still very crispy. Our greens were tender and had a kick to them. Not-so Good: My husband didn't enjoy the tenders. He didn't like the flavoring, thought there was too much breading and the breading was too soft. I looked on the IG page and saw that they do a "mash up" of Nashville hot chicken and mole negro. So that would explain the flavoring. Had I known, I would've told him not to get it because he's a pretty picky eater and I know he doesn't enjoy stuff like that. My chicken sandwich was supposed to come with coleslaw, but there was barely any on there. When I looked up other reviews with pics, I can see the "owner" pictures definitely show more coleslaw than the pics from actual Yelp reviewers. So that was disappointing (you can see my pic for reference). Also, with the greens, while they were tender, they were a wee bit large (could use a bit more chopping) and also had stems. As someone that makes greens at home and grew up eating them (my mom is from the south), I always take the time to remove the stems. It just makes them more enjoyable. I wasn't surprised these had stems because MOST restaurants that serve greens have stems. I understand why (time consuming to remove), but it's like, go the extra mile and remove the stems! But I digress... Overall, the food was ok. Not sure if I'd go back. Well... I'd go back to try the BBQ.

3 Chicken Tender Basket + an extra tender

Fried chicken is an obsession of mine, and when I found out that Jack's BBQ is starting to serve fried chicken, I had to give it a try. AMBIANCE Jack's Chicken Shack is served out of a window of Jack's BBQ on 9th. It's conveniently in the middle of SLU. I had the chance to eat at Jack's before the pandemic and it's a quaint space. Nice bar and ample seating. No frills and gets the job done, as you'd expect from a BBQ spot. The staff are really friendly and provide great recommendations (10/10 on the smoked honey mustard) FOOD A huge part of taste is what the eye sees, and Jack's Chicken Tender Basket is a beauty. You can see the spices in the breading, and the sheer size of the tenders is something else. I didn't really know what I was getting into, as there aren't any other Yelp reviews yet for the Chicken Shack, but these tenders are huge. We split a 4 piece meal between two of us, and were stuffed. I don't think I've ever had a chicken tender this large. It's a whole tenderloin too, so I'm not sure what kind of giant birds they're using, but I'm not complaining. The chicken was juicy, and the breading held its crunch on the ride home well. No complaints here. My favorite part of the meal was the smoked honey mustard, which was recommended by the guy who took our order. The consistency is spot on, and glazes over the chicken perfectly when you dunk a tender in the sauces. It's not too sweet, and the mustard taste is subtle yet effective. Honestly the perfect complement for these giant tenders. The Mac and Cheese was super cheesy, which I'm a fan of. I'm not the biggest fan of the texture of cornbread, but that's a personal preference thing. OVERALL Great spot, huge chicken tenders, and amazing condiments. I need to come back to try the chicken sandwich and all of their other dipping sauces. I hope things pick back up in terms of foot traffic when this pandemic washes over.

    Beef Brisket

Ordered takeout: The breading on the tenders was waaay too thick and kept falling off. Not too pleasant to eat as it felt like I was eating two separate things: seasoned fried breading and plain (but moist) chicken. Weirdly enough their online menu was also connected to their BBQ shop so I also ordered their beef brisket but ended up being very disappointed since it was one of the driest briskets I've ever had. Out of everything, I will say their texas caviar was refreshing to munch on. The mac & cheese, potato salad, cornbread were also good. Chili was definitely more on the oilier side, but still flavorful and tasty.

Super nice note from the Jack's team!
    Lia J.

Got delivery from them! The tenders were crispy outside and juicy in the inside. The dipping sauce was also different which was super refreshing. The chili was a knock out! I was super impressed with the smoky flavor. Probably one of the more flavorful chili soups you can find around in the area. The cornbread was moist and had a good texture. All the toppings (generous portions) for the chili were included (onions, sour cream, cheese etc). The business was so awesome too they gave me an extra tender as one was a bit smaller than the other gigantic one! You definitely get your money and flavors worth with Jacks! I ordered through Grubhub but it sounds like they also have their own delivery service. Grubhub was pretty quick, but next time I def want to try their delivery!

Chicken sandwich and a side of chili

The chicken was moist and tender. Probably could have been a tad crispier. The overall flavor was pretty good. The chili was really flavorful and had a lot of meat in it.

So, we were gonna go the fast food route...you can do the math (we wanted chix and choc shakes......and that would have been good. But I'm so happy my hubby found Jacks' BBQ! It's Texas style, but they have a nice broad offering of items that are not too hot to eat! They have a jalapeño cheddar sausage...just order it. It's that good. Hubby and I shared one. We decided we didn't want the bread so we opted for the 2 tender meal that comes with sides. We were interested in the pickles, so we asked for some, and they happily gave us some. We also tried all their sauces. As stated before, it's Texas BBQ, so the potato salad was mustard based. And the coleslaw was vinegar based (vs Mayo based) we also got the hush puppies, and the honey butter that comes is not overly sweet. It strikes a nice balance with the hush puppies. The chicken Tendies is literally Huge! It's like a 1/4 breast trimmed and de-skinned, battered and fried to golden perfection. Why is this important? You get a tender piece of white meat, and you don't feel greasy after eating it! We also got the corn bread..it also was very good. Another reviewer stated that the corn bread was crumbly, and that can happen, but ours was moist. And held together nicely. It is also served with the honey whipped butter. Hubby tried the Manhattan and I had the old fashion. The drink was well balanced, and it was enjoyable to have 1 while we feasted on all the goodness here at Jake's BBQ! For sides we had: Mac n cheese: divine Potato salad: very good (mustard forward) Coleslaw: good, but you gotta like mustard (no Mayo here) We ordered collard greens to go, so looking forward to try the greens later. Please push past the other touch n go reviews. The staff was super friendly, knowledgeable about the menu, and the sauces...oh ya, baby! They just need to bottle it, so I can bring some home! Next time, hubby will have to try the bbq/smoked pork and beef. I bet it will be awesome, given the taste of the other menu items! Go here! You won't be disappointed! Ambience, casualtake out, indoor dining, outdoor dining options. All staff were masked up. They want you to wear a mask unless seated at your table.

I tell my non-Asian friends that they should leave an Asian restaurant if you don't see any Asians inside. I am happy to say we were the odd ducks in this place! Love me some legit soul food. The menu is straightforward. We ordered at the counter. The food is brought to our table. The food took quite a while with big crowds coming in after us. I suspect they cook in batches as multiple groups received food at the same time. It was mostly self-service (utensils, water) until the restaurant quieted down, then we saw servers cleaning tables, etc. The Food: Combo Dinner with two sides, $26 - 5 Stars The combo plat offers two meat choices. I chose the wings and catfish. The wings are sizable and plump. Highly recommend. The catfish was a thinner cut and a bit dryer. I liked the very thin breading on the catfish, not greasy, and it tasted good with Tabasco. For sides, both the collard greens and fried okra are excellent. In fact, I say the okra is perfection! The little corn bread is just right for me. I thought the corn bread has good flavor while hubby said it was too dry. Catfish Dinner with two sides, $24 - 3.5 Stars Hubby complained the catfish was too thin. He's not a Tabasco person, so that doesn't help. I gave him two wings to calm him down. Lol. He loved the hush puppies the best. They are huge with a wonderful crisp. I agree with him! He thought the yams are too sweet; they do look sweet in the liquids but isn't that want yams are intended to be? I think he just needs to order differently in the future. Note they have a 3.5% service charge for credit card purchases. See line on the menu photo.

THE SHORT OF IT: - Absolutely exceptional ambiance, food,…read moreand service. I can't wait to go back! Service was quick, attentive, and everything arrived in a very timely manner given how busy they were on a Saturday evening. The menu truly has something for everyone and the wine list is exceptional. We also had a birthday at the table and still felt special and well-attended despite every table being full. THE INSIDE: - The stained glass windows and hanging lights give such a warm, cozy, yet upscale vibe. - There are many tables and booths. - Handicapped accommodations can be made, but I'd ask in advance, as some areas are tougher to navigate than others. THE FOOD WE TRIED: - Pasta dish: Garlic Fennel Sausage, Oyster Mushrooms, and Snap Peas with Creczenza, White Truffle Oil, and Tagliarini balsamic, red and green basil, parsley, grana padano. Absolutely stunning. I could not finish it, so I'd suggest splitting it with someone else if you can't take it to go. It was so ridiculously flavorful and fresh. I want to eat this 11 more times. - Scallops dish: Sea Scallops Seared in Cast Iron with Oyster Mushrooms and Yellow Corn Risotto asparagus pistou, red basil, white truffle oil, crescenza, fine herbes. Presentation was gorgeous and scallops were melt-in-your-mouth perfect. The corn risotto underneath would honestly be just as good on its own. - Steak dish: Snake River Farms Wagyu Baseball Cut Sirloin 9 oz. The savory compound butter on top was the perfect amount, and the two sauces on the side (chimichurri and a brown one I wish I could name, it's in the pictures) were so good I could have eaten them by a spoon. Steak was cooked to an ideal medium rare with a perfect sear. This was the star of the table, even with everything else being SO GOOD. -Seafood: Big Easy Jambalaya, deep creole flavors, unapologetically spicy wild gulf prawns, chicken, house made andouille, tasso. The person who ordered this said it reminded them of straight New Orleans fare, so I trust their experience! Properly savory and chock full of flavor. SIDE NOTES: - Someone at our table had a seafood allergy and had no issues despite the vast amount of seafood on the menu and around us. - Reservation system is quick and easy. It feels a tiny bit cramped to move around outside of your seated area, but once you're seated, you absolutely won't care given how delicious everything is! - We ate here before attending an opera and had a cozy corner booth reserved months in advance, so that may have improved the experience a bit. :)

I ordered one of their king salmon dishes that was "creole style" but severely lacked seasoning. My boo ordered the steak, which also lacked salt and was served with boxed mash potatoes, which they should be ashamed for at this price point. I also had 4 oysters as an appetizer and they were so small! I was expecting more from the seafood as it seems to be what Seattle is known for. They oysters were fresh, but $22 for four tiny oysters is offensive. This experience may have gotten another star if the service was better but this is place I'd just skip.

Been waiting to give them a try and had an appointment in tukwila so I stopped in for lunch. This…read moreis a no frills, southern home cooked food spot with rotating specials. I stopped in about 30 mins after they opened on a friday and they had a lunch rush, everything is cooked to order so be prepared to wait at least 20mins. I ordered the 6oz catfish and chips which came with 3 catfish strips, fries, 1 hush puppy, chips and a drink ($16.99) I also got a side of mac&cheese. The positives: staff was kind, pastor at the counter would make jokes with customers and you could tell they had regulars during lunch time. Fries were well seasoned, hush puppy was good and Mac was acceptable. My only issue with the catfish was that it was overcooked and became a bit chewy (see photo). Sitting in there it seems like the wings were a customer favorite so I would love to go back and try their wings and other sides. Since my order took longer (there was a large order right before mines) the pastor at the counter thanked me for my patience and threw in a dessert.

The place is quaint and the people are friendly. And the food here delivers in every possible way. If you appreciate Soul Food and/or Southern Food then this is the place for you. The cabbage here was everything I could ever ask for. I wanted more when I was done. The Mac & cheese didn't look like much to me but man did it serve on tastes. It was cheesy, seasoned and cooked just right. The fried chicken was cooked fresh and seasoned to perfection. My breast was still juicy and piping hot. Call ahead for to go orders or you'll spend your time waiting for the chicken to be fried. The peach cobbler here is not my preferred way to have as I like a pie crust with mine but oh my goodness, I took one bite and couldn't stop savoring this dessert. Do yourself and get you some. Open Fridays & Saturdays, and the menu slightly rotates weekly so check their website ( southerngrill1.com ) to check menu and confirm hours. This place is everything and more that I could ever ask for when it comes to good ole soul food.

I haven't eaten many biscuits since moving to Seattle even though I grew up devouring them in the…read moreSouth. It's mostly because I find the large majority of biscuit places on the West Coast to be subpar - either dense and dry inside, or too similar to cake, like the baker substituted cake flour for good old fashioned White Lily. When I saw a bunch of people recommend Seattle Biscuit Company, I decided to give them a try. The first time I visited a biscuit place in the PNW a ton of people recommended, Pine State Biscuits in Portland for reference, I came out extremely disappointed. Hopefully this time would be different. I have to say, pricing is a bit ridiculous here. Just as a comparison point, the special fried chicken biscuit here is $27. The fried chicken biscuit at the place I grew up eating at is currently $5. The plain biscuit is $7 here vs. $1.29 there. Is it worth the price? I started out with a plain biscuit to judge their basic building block: Plain Biscuit ($7) - These are massive biscuits, around half a pound in weight, easily dwarfing the size of 90% of other biscuits. The smell wafting out of the paper wrapper smells heavenly with the aroma butter and flour. The taste reminds me of my childhood growing up in the South. It's distinctively buttery and salty, warm and comforting, almost spot on in taste as compared to say, Bojangles. A lot of places on the West Coast don't add enough salt or butter, making the biscuit taste unpleasantly alkaline. This one has no issues at all in the flavor department. The bake on the biscuit is fantastic, leaving the exterior with a crisp crust all around, while the inside still remains moist and fluffy. It's not particularly layered or flaky, and the interior, while fluffy, has a bit more developed gluten, making it just slightly chewy and slightly denser than perfection. When trying to split by hand, it doesn't split cleanly and instead chunks, especially in the center. Yet it's moist and doesn't crumble apart easily. These biscuits stand on their own and don't need any accompaniment to be enjoyed. Out of all the biscuits I've eaten on the West Coast so far (15+ places), this one tastes the most like a good Southern biscuit. (5/5) I was impressed enough with the biscuit that I revisited the week afterwards to try a sandwich: Gus ($27) - This sandwich seems very expensive until the plate comes out. In between the giant biscuit comes two pieces of fried chicken breast (or perhaps one piece filleted into two). It's breaded and fried generally well - the outside is definitely crisp, although it doesn't adhere that well to the chicken and slides off very readily. The interior of the chicken is nice. I usually expect chicken breast to be dry, but this one is relatively moist, not dried out at all. The breading tastes sweet and salty. I wonder if they brine the chicken in sweet tea. Each side of the biscuit is slathered with a bit of sweet mustard and peppered with pickle slices, giving some acidity to cut through the sausage gravy fat. Between the pickles and the sweet breading, it reminds me of the flavor of a Chick-fil-A chicken sandwich. The sandwich is served on a bed of orange-colored sausage gravy. It's thick and rich, although perhaps a little on the floury side. There's plenty of sausage mixed in, giving a ton of meaty depth combined with black pepper and spices. In terms of portion size, my wife and I shared this sandwich and we had trouble finishing it. It's definitely enough for two people, which makes the pricing a little more palatable. (5/5) Sweet Tea ($5) - This one is definitely on the sweeter side compared to what I make at home. The tea doesn't have much astringency but it does have a nice generic black tea flavor. There aren't that many places in Seattle to get sweet tea, so I'd say it's passable. I did purchase additional plain biscuits as well and I have to say texture-wise, they are similar, but these new ones tasted distinctively less buttery than before. I think there might be some consistency issues although this second batch is still really good. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the biscuits served at Seattle Biscuit Kitchen. I will definitely be revisiting in the future for more. Bathrooms - Two unisex rooms.

I would recommend everyone should try this place at least once. I had the GUS... fried chicken,…read morepickle, sweet onion, mustard, egg and sausage gravy. Its a lot... im a big guy and a big eater and I could only eat half. The biscuit was great, and the gravy tasted a lot like Cracker Barrels sawmill gravy. The service was fine...simple order at the counter and seat yourself. The decor was cute kind of between industrial and farmhouse. Would I come again? Im not sure. Maybe in the winter because the food sits heavy and the cost is a tad pricey BUT...I truly think everyone should try it at least once.
