Jack's BBQ is a staple Washington chain known for their Central Texas-style BBQ. They have locations in South Lake Union (SLU), SODO, Columbia Tower, Bellevue/Redmond, Algona, Lakewood, and Federal Way. I have been to both their SLU and SODO locations. Their claim to fame is that "BBQ Sauce isn't needed - the meat is amazingly delicious!" However, they always provide BBQ sauce at the table and sell bottles of their BBQ sauce to take home, so not entirely sure how much they believe in their saying... On my most recent visit to the SLU location, a large group of co-workers and I went out for a celebratory occasion and ordered the: - SMOKED SWEET TEA ($4.50) - smoked brown sugar, simple syrup, and iced tea. This also comes as a cocktail with vodka ($14.50). This drink was honestly just alright and I probably wouldn't get it again personally. It had a slightly savory and smoky after taste, but kind of tasted like you just put a few drops of liquid smoke in the drink. - BUTTERMILK HUSHPUPPIES ($9) - golden brown and piping hot (like literally straight out of the fryer!) served with tartar sauce and honey butter. While they were super fresh and hot hot hot, they were a bit too dense for my preference. It was worth a try, but I would just stick with the regular buttermilk cornbread instead. - LONESTAR FRIES LOADED WITH QUESO AND BEEF BACON ($14.50) - french fries coated in velveta cheese with crumbles of bacon on top. One of my co-workers wanted to give this a try, so wasn't my choice or pick, but this appetizer was also pretty rich and dense. I also would not order this again as I found it too salty. - PICNIC ($98 - enough for four or more people to share!) - brisket, ribs, sausage, pulled pork, chicken, white bread, homemade pickles, jalapeños, and four sides. For sides, we chose the REMOULADE COLESLAW, BUTTERMILK CORNBREAD, QUESO MAC N CHEESE, and SWEET CORN PUDDING. Because there were 8+ of us, we upgraded the side sizes to 12-oz for $8, as part of the picnic deal. We additionally got a side of WAGYU BRISKET (a Wednesday-only special). - BRISKET/ WAGYU BRISKET - tasty, but surprisingly was on the drier side. I don't know if I really could tell the difference between the Wagyu and their normal brisket. I was expecting a much more moist piece of meat, but seemed kind of lean. - RIBS - these were my favorite in the basket. Sweet, juicy, and falls right off the bone! - SAUSAGE - they give you two types to try - spicy and cheese-filled. The spicy has jalapeño in it and definitely has a small kick. The cheese-filled is mild and slightly saltier. - PULLED PORK - also on the saltier side, but at least it's relatively moist and pre-shredded. - CHICKEN - mostly dark meat (which is my preference), but can't say there's really anything special about their marinade. Nothing to write home about here. - REMOULADE COLESLAW - your standard shredded cabbage coated in a sweet and slightly peppery and tangy mayonaise dressing. No complaints here. - BUTTERMILK CORNBREAD - this side is an ABSOLUTE MUST. My co-workers and I were blown away by how good the cornbread was here. It comes with a dollop (more like a scoop) of butter drizzled with honey, but even on it's own, it was absolutely amazing. It was crunchy on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside, like a good cake. - QUESO MAC N CHEESE - This side was evidently rich, but less rich than the Lonestar fries. It was creamy, savory, and came with a sprinkle of breadcrumbs on top. I liked that they used spiral macaroni as opposed to your typical half tube macaroni as it gave more texture and chew to the dish. - SWEET CORN PUDDING - I thought I would've liked this one more, but similar to the hush puppies, this dish was also too dense for my liking. However, it was a nice and sweet complement to the mostly savory dishes otherwise. **TLDR- for mains sides (as I've basically tried them all at both locations), I would recommend the ribs, buttermilk cornbread, remoulade coleslaw, Gramma's collard greens, and mustardy potato salad.** For dessert, we ordered one of everything off the menu and honestly, dessert was 10/10!: - PEACH COBBLER & ICE CREAM FOR TWO ($12) - this cobbler was fantastic. It was moist, gooey, and had the perfect amount of sweetness. It was served warm and the ice cream just melted right into it! - PECAN PIE -1996 TEXAS STATE FAIR CHAMP, ALA MODE ($9.50) - this pie was fantastic too. It was sticky, chewy, buttery, and everything a good pecan pie should be. No wonder it was a prize-winning dessert! - BANANA PUDDING WITH NILLA WAFERS ($6.50) - this pudding was creamy, rich, and full of bananas and whipped cream with strong notes of vanilla. The nilla wafers offered a nice crunch and love how they crumbled some on top of the pudding too! Service was wonderful and we got our food within 20 minutes after ordering. We walked in on a Thursday evening to a very brisk crowd. Good sign. There's lots of reference to Texas bbq. Good sign. We got seated quickly and given menus. We were informed they were out of brisket and pulled pork....bad sign. So we both went with pork ribs (couldn't eat more chicken) with two sides, white bread, onions and pickles. For sides I went with ranch beans and potatoe salad. My wife had the collard greens and ranch beans. Sides were good and lots of choices. Good sign. Now about those ribs....you get 4 meaty ribs ok. Pretty charred from end to end. The bad...the ribs literally had no flavor and very bland. Disappointment. In addition they were pretty dry. The waitstaff were very friendly and accommodating. I got the 1/2 pound of brisket here If I had to describe this brisket, I would say it was pretty good, but not great Certain parts were tender and flavorful - like the inner section of the second (lower) piece, but the outer edges of both pieces and the majority of the top piece were definitely bordering on overcooked - they were pretty tough It was generally easy to cut, but as I mentioned, as you got closer to the edge, it felt more like a brick than that 'melt in your mouth' feeling you're really looking for when it comes to the tenderness of brisket I don't doubt that it was slow cooked for a long time, but I do think the top piece was cooked too long Just by looking at the images, you can tell the lower piece exudes more flavor I can't really say either piece was juicy. However, I did find the overall flavor pretty pleasant throughout, although the flavor profile began to get a little stale by the end I also tried out the sauces - which became necessary once the flavor grew onenote. My favorite of these was the Roasted Jalapeno sauce, as it was slightly spicy/sweet. It was a bit expensive, coming out to around $20 for the meal, and I wouldn't say this is enough to fill a person. Very mid bbq at an expensive price point (I think it was $26?). Brisket was reasonable quality but super dry and flavorless so it required sauce to taste anything. The sauces were ok but nothing special. The Mac and cheese and Cole slaw were also decent, it felt like similar quality to what I might get an above average fast food restaurant. came in on a Sunday afternoon for lunch and so glad I did. Atmosphere was cozy, inviting and laid-back. Our server Brenda was super hospitable and attentive with every aspect. The nacho platter was HUGE, got it with pulled pork and it came with a side of the BEST queso I've had. Enough to feed a small village. For mains, I got the Texas Trinity (brisket, ribs , 2 kinds of sausage) w/ 2 sides (I got Mac n cheese, savory beans). I added the Jacks chilis on the side. The mac n cheese was good, but could use a deeper cheese flavor, the beans were lightly seasoned and a nice refreshing taste for the heavy meats, the Jacks Chili was very meaty and had a more mild flavor. Meats: Truly the best part of the meal, ribs and brisket were cooked to perfection, insanely tender, juicy and almost fall-apart, seasoned well with a great Smokey aroma. Pairs great with the Original BBQ SAUCE. The hot link had that snap and a decent spice flavor to it, the jalepeno cheddar sausage was super rich and creamy in a meaty bite. Decided to stop by for take out order. Jack's BBQ is located in the Unicorn Building (Amazon) on 9th and Thomas. The location is small and perfect for to-go orders. They do have some seating, however I imagine this would be full during the week. I ordered the Brisket Plate which included 1/2lb of Double Ranch brisket and 2 sides. I opted for mac n' cheese and potato salad. The brisket was classic Texas style and was decent for the price point. The mac n' cheese was the standard texture and flavor. The potato salad was a bit bland. Their hot sauce had a nice kick and I wish I asked for extras. Service was fast and my order was ready in minutes. Price is also within line with other bbq spots. Small Texas style barbecue restaurant in South Lake Union, in one of the Amazon buildings. Looks like it can fit maybe 20-25 customers. Went for a late-ish lunch and the place was doing good business, but we didn't need to wait for a table. Pretty simple menu with appetizers, sides, and the meat sandwiches and platters. We got the brisket and the pork ribs. Each platter comes with 2 sides so we ordered cornbread, collard greens, chili and mac n cheese. Brisket you get two large slices, and ribs was 4 pieces. Brisket was tender and not dry, has a decent bark on outside. Ribs were not fall-off-the-bone but still easy to eat, has nice dark seasoning. Overall the meats were decent. As for the sides, my favorite was the cornbread as they give you a scoop of butter on top. The chili was good too. The other two were okay. Bill came out to $65 including tip, which is in line with SLU prices, and a little higher than elsewhere. Portions were fine since we had a bit of leftovers to take home. As a South Texas native, I was excited to find a Texas BBQ spot in town, and even happier to find them doing a good job! The staff inside are kind and seat folks quickly, and the interior is true to a southern BBQ spot. While the menu is a bit on the pricey side for a meal, they're more than filling and provide a great opportunity to share with friends. My favorite item on the menu so far has been the brisket sandwich: a tender cut of brisket served with a soft bun and cole slaw inside. Their BBQ sauce is a great table side with both a spicy and non spicy option, and can go on most every meat. In general the sides are consistently good, with the seasonal brussel sprouts stealing the show at my most recent visit (keep them year round please). I had the rib plate now, I'm usually a pull-off-the-bone person, but these were full-on fall-off-the-bone ribs and actually , I really enjoyed them. The plate also came with coleslaw, a corn-and-veg side, and this cool little onion-pickle mix that totally works. There were 5 of us, so we tried a lot. The brisket, mac and cheese, potato salad all solid, and they've got two types of sausage links: one fiery-hot and the other still with a little kick but not nearly as intense. Both were good. The place is clean, good decor with pictures and interesting wall art, it gets busy but not chaotic. and the service was excellent our server kept checking in, making sure we had everything we needed, and even asked if we had suggestions. The service here was great; I really wanted to like these nachos, but unfortunately, they were just really soggy and practically inedible for a large portion. The best thing by far, was the queso and I could drink it up by itself, and that was really the saving grace. It's flavored well and has a nice kick but I think the proportions of the beans were really off. There were way too many beans and it got the chips really soggy and wet. A good place for BBQ sandwiches if you're craving one. I had their pulled pork sandwich and it was pretty good. The sauces come on the side in a sauce bottle so that you're able to be in charge with how much BBQ sauce you wanted. The sauces tasted good, but it wasn't great. I felt like it wasn't sweet and tangy enough, personally. I also had their Mac & Cheese and it was pretty good! It was mixed with jalapeños which gave it a nice flavor, and the cheese was creamy. I also had their double trouble, which I recommend to stay away from. They offered two choice of meats; however, portioning is pretty bad. The meal came with two sides as well, which was a total of $30, however, this meal only basically serves one person. The pulled pork sandwich meal was $18 and was actually plentiful as a meal. The pork ribs were good. But again, portioning was poor. The service was kind of good. Mostly, the servers were kind, but there was a time where I wished they were nicer to us. The hush puppies had good crunch and flavor. The sides were Queso Mac and Cheese and their current special of sausage gumbo. Amazing taste in these as well. The gumbo was a highlight for me. We also got a side of wings, their Wednesday special. Cooked perfectly. Our server was attentive. They offered me a taste of Last Dab XXX hot sauce, and were quick about bringing me milk (normally don't need it, but this sauce is diabolical). It's a small place in downtown Seattle. The meat also came out lukewarm, which isn't completely weird but it made me wonder if something was going on in the kitchen. I usually don't care for service, but it was super delayed and we were forgotten at one point. But it's a minor thing to me, but didn't help with the overall experience of cold food. It was Yelp photos that brought me here. The brisket or pulled pork nachos put me in the mood for nachos. The Yelp photo by the owner of the nachos was spot on. It is huge and could not finish it. There are several sides that come with the order including dipping cheese, salsa, jalapeños, and sour cream. I will look to return and try the pork ribs next time. The entrance is not quite right. The door is push entrance when it should be the other way. Also there is a step once you enter and could be challenging if entering on a wheel chair. I like the big ice rock instead of the small cubes to control melting, but I also realize a sophisticat-o OF at a bbq place is probably not the vibe. The food: collards were good. Hot link was really spicy, but good. I was disappointed in the brisket. It wasn't warm enough, and I thought it could have used a smidge more smoke - I used bbq sauce for the middle of the brisket. This place has really great bbq for lunch and dinner, but just be careful because although they are open for breakfast, they don't actually serve barbecue in the morning. Only breakfast burritos or something like that. It's clearly marked on their web site but you can't tell from the google or yelp entry. Got the two meat platter ribs and brisket both cooked perfect brisket tender but still held up ribs same fell apart in my mouth so good. Also got the billionaire bacon which was the only disappointment. From the pictures I saw was one slab what I got was a bunch of strips of bacon, flavor was good nothing wrong with the food just not what I was looking for. Oh and get the beans! I didn't have a great experience here but that doesn't mean it is bad. I had the beef bacon and hush puppies. The bacon was dry and not much flavor. I sent it back. I switched to the rib tips and it was much better. The hush puppies were dense and a bit dry. They should be crunchy on the outside and softer inside. I just didn't like them. Don't think you can find good BBQ in Seattle? Think again! This is some of the best BBQ I've had anywhere in the country. Texas style BBQ, Large servings, good smoke without being over powering. My boyfriend who's from Oklahoma was really craving barbecue, and we found out this place was highly reviewed! We ordered The Picnic since it comes with all the meats and it's the standard portion if you were going to order each meat separately.
