You can also custom order salads or select from their salad creations. Their greens are fresh, varied and never soggy! I totally had the "Atkins lunch" ordering a small salad with tri tip on the side. It was a lot of meat! You are allowed six toppings if you make your own salad and can obviously pay for more. They have tons of options, I won't remember them all, but the ones I got were: * Cranberries * Walnuts * Bleu Cheese * Red Onions (note to self: don't get this again when you have a meeting straight after) * Croutons * Beets * Garbanzo beans * Grilled mushrooms Great spot to take folks as there is something for everyone, carnivores, vegetarians and omnivores alike. On a Thursday afternoon, my sister and I stopped by here for a bite to eat. The place is located in a good spot, there's plenty of parking, and an area for bicycles. The staff was friendly and the food selection was decent. As a whole, the food was average. I ordered the Thai Salmon Salad. Personally, I felt that my salmon was dry and over cooked. It was supposed to be 'blackened' however it was more on the char side-- too char broiled. I would not order it again. My sister enjoyed her mashed potatoes and sandwich. After recently attending a Yelp event, my boyfriend and I were hungry, since the food at said event vaporized within minutes of being served. This restaurant was just within walking distance and we caught it in time before closing. This place offers a cafeteria style selection of foods. The beginning of the counter has a large salad bar where you can "create your own" priced at $6.95 for a half salad or $7.95 for the full. It's made to order while you wait and watch. You choose 6 toppings that are included in the price or pay extra for any additional items. While 6 seems like a lot, I really wished that I could have had a little bit of everything, since that is what I would commonly be preparing at home. You also get a single choice from 3 types of lettuce and a dressing choice from 6 flavors. Disappointingly no French, which is my favorite. After the server made my salad, she forgot to add dressing, and I had to ask for some. I was a little worried that dressing was part of the 6 salad choices! She apologized and mixed it into the bowl of greens before plating it, but it didn't seem like there was that much dressing in there to speak of. It looked like the employees, including the owner or manager, were a little preoccupied with closing, since they were in the process of cleaning up. The second half of the counter offers many types of comfort foods from delicious looking deli style sandwiches, carved meats, gourmet fries, soups, fresh breads and other side dishes. I like eating at Jack's till now. I always thought their produce and quality was quite good till today. I work for the state and try to make my lunches as fast as possible, I typically eat at my desk. So I ran out to Jack's today for my typical salad and I go at 1:30 - 2:00 to avoid crowds. When I got back to my desk, I started looking through what I was eating after noticing dark brownish red and yellowish white strands. These were to be carrots, although looked nothing like any carrot I have ever seen. I picked them out and continued to eat when I hit the dead end of a head of lettuce, the absolute bottom. Then I hit a garbanzo bean. I do not eat certain beans due to a severe allergy to a certain protein and garbanzos are one of those. The food was good but not great. My Cheese steak sandwich had cold un-melted cheese. The flavors where pretty good though. The customer service from the food prep station was very rude. They don't have name tags, so ill describe them. Two girls; one looked hispanic with black hair with a red streak, the other with faded blue hair and an old blue fishing hat. My mother couldn't find the menu, since the two are in inconspicuous places with really small font. My mother asked "where's the menu", no one responded, she said out load to me, "there's no menu", the Hispanic looking girl responded "yes there is", that is it. Then my mother repeated it again, "there's no menu" while looking around, the 2nd girl with blue hair responded loudly with a demeaning tone "yes their is". This is when I asked where? We don't see the menu, just tell us where is it. She (blue hair) didn't look up, she just pointed and said, "over there". Over there was too vague. I responded "why can't you just tell the customer where it's at? Be polite to the customers". The blue hair'd girl started arguing that she did tell us and I/we didn't hear. Jack's Urban Eats has this vibe to it that makes it so hip or something to eat there, I give it that, but the food isn't always as amazingly tasty as it smells, except for the garlic fries which I've always consistently found very yummy, so I can't quite give it more than 3-stars. I haven't been here for awhile since I don't work over in mid-town anymore (within walking distance, that is), but I used to come here about once a month or once every couple of months and the food's generally good if a bit expensive. The wait could be annoying if you don't get here by 1130 (or even 11-ish) on a Friday, but with furlough Fridays maybe it isn't as much a problem now? Who knows. Well, I hope they're still as good or better as I remember Jack's to be. I do like their sandwiches b/c of their freshly roasted meats but their sides aren't very good (for how much you pay, i.e. mac n cheese and esp. veggies that remind me of Hometown Buffet... eww). Their cheesy French bread is yummy but a bit on the pricey side if you think about how it's just one slice of bread with cheese on top and it's the price of almost a whole loaf. I visited Jack's on a Friday night, around 7:00 p.m. There were many customers still eating, but no one actually in line to order, which was good for me. For those who haven't been there before, they have paper menus which you can browse and then you just go up to the counter and order. My boyfriend and I decided on: -Custom salad ($7.75 for a full salad): I chose romaine lettuce with gorgonzola vinaigrette. You get to choose 6 toppings in addition and I chose grilled mushrooms, kidney-garbanzo beans, sweet corn, honey-glazed walnuts, grape tomatoes, and fire roasted red peppers. All of the ingredients are very fresh and very flavorful, and the portion size is very fair. -California Cheesesteak ($7.75): Tri-tip, mushrooms, onions, peppers, pepperjack cheese on ciabatta, with a couple pepperoncinis and a pickle on the side. The sandwich was pretty average and not as big as I hoped it'd be. Also, it's the type of sandwich where when you bite it, all of the meat slides out. Bummer. -Urban fries ($3.25): french fries topped with blue cheese dressing, pepper flakes, and chili oil (although our order did not have any chili oil, not sure what happened with that). The fries alone are very much average, but with the toppings, they are a little bit tastier, still nothing spectacular though. Overall, Jack's is really A-OK. It's a great place to go for a salad because you can choose whatever you want to put in it and it's ready right away. Some of the other items are just okay, but I've never had anything bad. I came here on NYE for lunch, and it was a busy place. Street parking - you may need to bring change for the metered parking. Luckily for us, we had enough change in our pocket for street parking. I ordered the steak salad, jack's urban fries and my friend ordered the Rueben with a side of mac and cheese. The line was very long and busy. I ordered the steak salad without blue cheese crumbles, and I substituted with mushrooms instead. So, for sandwiches, they give you a number for it. So when you sit down, they deliver it to you. I think my salad was a decent size. This place reminds me of Plutos, but I think Plutos salads are bigger and larger. I think they're more tasty. My salad was okay. It was satisfying but I wasn't impressed or anything. I think the fries are good, but I really like Pork Belly Grub Shack fries more. They remind me of the same thing but PBGS is better. They were very crispy though, so that's a plus. The rueben sandwich was decent. There were lots of pastrami on there, and I like the mustard on it. The bread was nice and toasty. The mac and cheese didn't taste like anything. It was bland. Overall, I think this place is decent for a quick healthy lunch, since they have salad. I don't think their salads are that great... I made a visit here recently with my sister and mom-to-all, Donna. My sister and I split the build your own salad. We were able to choose up to six ingredients and we got beets, blue cheese, eggs, tomatoes, olives and I forgot the last ingredient! Darn! With a little vinaigrette dressing, our salad was complete! We also ordered the garlic fries and cheesy bread. YUM! The salad was good. It's something I can easily make at home but on a lazy day, it's nice to watch someone else prepare it for you! The cheesy bread was greasy and delicious. Again, something I can easily whip up at home! The garlic fries, omg, I inhaled the whole plate! Slowly gaining back the weight I lost!! EEEKKKKK!! Outdoor seating was a plus, along with the modern decor. Everything seemed a little dirty/grimy. The food was really hit and miss. My turkey was flavorful and not dry, with yummy gravy. The Jack's atmosphere has a certain energy that complements the zesty and vibrant flavors of its food. My BBQ chicken sandwich was piquant, juicy and had a certain quality of balance between bread, substance and sauce. The onion strings were perfectly fried and the bread immaculately toasted. I finally had the chance to stop by and try Jack's. I came in during lunch and despite the long line, I was in and out of Jack's in about 15-20 minutes. I got the Pesto Chicken sandwich and I'd have to say it's not anything special, but it was still a good sandwich. People are friendly enough but you order up front. No true service. The menu items sounded delicious. I tried the classci tri-tip sandwich.... it was just ok. 3 stars. The onions were sweet but there was nothing to counter-balance the sweetness. The tri-tip, although cooked well didn't have much flavor in and of itself. The mac n cheese is interesting.... some people might like it but 3 stars for me. My favorite would have to be the custom-made salads but their sandwiches and plates are great too! Recently I tried their Mediterranean Salmon plate with a side of mashed potatoes and brussel sprouts. It was cooked to perfection and seasoned perfectly. They have several locations but I like this one located more downtown. Seating can be an issue but usually once you wait in line, order your food, and pay, some seats have opened up. I come here so often but this is my first review for my favorite sandwich place! First of all, urban fries are MUST! You won't regret it! The crispy fries with chili oil chili flakes and a light blue cheese dressing but don't let that deter you from getting it, the blue cheese dressing honestly tastes like ranch you can't taste the pungency of blue cheese at all! (~$4) Another side dish I always order is mac n cheese! They're big swirly macaronis with a light cheesy sauce and it's always warm, yummmmmm. (~$3) Today I tried their chili lime roasted corn and it was also really good! That would be my "healthier" alternative to the mac n cheese lol (~$3) For sandwiches, you can't go wrong with jacks classic tri tip sandwich: tri tip steak lettuce tomato honey mustard and grilled onions! Their sandwiches are definitely taste above average but when It comes to the urban fries other fries just can't compare. The fries compliments the sandwich perfectly. The prices here are fair and the environment is welcoming. The line can be a little long while waiting for your food and finding a table takes a moment but it's worth the wait! Aw, shoooooooot. I actually love this place due to the accessibility and location. I can walk here for a quick dinner and do the typical female thing of ordering a salad for dinner. But what I really really really like, is their Urban Fries. The family plate served up with a heaping hot dish of French fries drizzled with their great blue cheese dressing and spattered with chili flakes. Mmmmm, yummy yummy. In order to make my conscience feel better, I usually order the plain Jane house salad, have all the condiments tossed, and served up, with lots of dressing. Yes, I am every gourmand's nightmare. Love having salad with my dressing. The flank steak sandwiches are my sis's favorite as is their mashed potatoes and asparagus. I tried the steamed vegetable and it was a little too plain for my salty tastes. I know about Pluto's in SF. Use to go there all the time after seeing my bf in the marina. People want salads past 9PM! ARGH!! Thanks to this lovely little spot, I've been coming back (not this location) ever since. Ever since they advertised their "blue plate" ideals in the SN&R and Pop's was on a mission to try it...I've been addicted! Although they cultivated my addiction, I tend to favor the Loheman's Plaza location...no apparent reason, but its just the first one I think of. I actually love the set up of this spot. The outdoor/patio seating is lovely for afternoon and early evening. Their set-up is as bad as all the other locations. Unless you know how to order, you still wait in a looong, looong line. Because even when you know how to order, you don't want to look as if you are cutting everyone in line...even though they just don't know what they are doing...its a catch 22 of sorts! They get a plus and a minus for one situation - bought dinner and left my check card. I tried multiple time to call, during their opening hours that night and the next day, however - NO ONE ANSWERED the phone. It infuriated me, its the same at their other location too - no one answers their phones. I get that you don't take phone orders, but damn...it would be helpful to get some customer service love. The plus is that they took care of the card, no random charges were made on it. The staff are a bunch of fairly young grid-ies. Always subdued, part emo, part hipster. They are helpful and polite, but just doing a job...nothing more, nothing less. As many grid spots do, they close at 9PM. I wish they were open a little later. It would be nice to go grub on some Urban fries later than 9PM - one can only dream, right?!? I do appreciate their parking lot, behind the building - parallel to the railroad tracks. This type of real estate is extra star worthy. I loved this place when they first opened up their 1st location in midtown. The Natomas location has been inconsistent with their salad dressings, ingredient quantities and quality. We usually order the traditional Caesar salad or Chinese chicken salad. The dressings are watery and bland. Lettuce is sometimes old and croutons are next to nothing or overloaded. I went to the Jacks in Midtown, and there was this tall young lady named Portuf or Torta or something and when I came up to order I immediately smelled a stench that I say most resembles a cow farm. Not only was she on her phone looking at her nails and chewing gum, she even looked me up and down and said "ew". After she took my order she handed me my food and I couldn't help but notice her belly button sticking out of her shirt and what seemed to be green ooze slowly coming out of it. She had a little bit of the fluid on her finger which unfortunately dropped on my food. Sadly I am too shy to go back and have the food corrected to I just ate around it. Overall. You can find 2-hour parking right in front of the restaurant or around the corner, otherwise if it gets too busy, you might have to pay for a parking meter which is near the front of the restaurant as well.
