Came by on a Saturday and it was packed. The service was great. For the kids, they provided some crayons with a paper for the kids to draw on their kids menu. They also provided a box car to make - very cool! Takes about a few minutes to put together. We ordered the zucchini chips which were very crispy and came with a nice dipping sauce. They also had a great hummus with fresh hot pita. Bread is also provided as much as you want. I ordered the peri peri chicken and it was delicious. A bit spicy and tons of flavor. This place has been on my list of places to try for brunch for yeeeears and I did hear it was overhyped. People were right. It is overhyped. That being said, it was a decent brunch and the servers were all super friendly. I made a reservation for Sunday brunch which was good since it was pretty crowded. There's a good amount of seating indoors and a few tables outdoors, and to be honest it was quite loud inside, so I would recommend sitting outside. There's were also two single restrooms inside, but they were pretty small. I tried the $10 cantaloupe juice which was unique but just alright. Honestly the watermelon juice (which was a special) probably would have tasted better. For my entree I ordered the green shakshuka, which didn't really have any flavor.... the bread was soft but just okay (but at least bread is free so you can ask your server for more). Loved the bottomless coffee - much needed after a busy weekend in New York. My friend got a latte and really liked it. For brunch, we shared the matzo ball soup (yes, shared, we spooned some out on our plates lol), and the rose water waffle. Both were great and I loved the syrup and the fresh whipped cream on the rose water waffle, both tasted like they were made in house. For entrees, 2 of us got the pink smoked salmon Benedict (it was a special on the menu), and another got a vegetable omelet with goat cheese and veggies (special on the menu). All of our food was very tasty and what made everything better was our amazing waiter. He continuously checked on us throughout our meal, and he saw we were dressed for a special occasion. He found out we were in town for an engagement party and brought some "perfect match" matchboxes to us at the end of our meal, with one extra for the bride. I didn't really have the best experience here. Came in with a large party and immediately had water spilled all over my table. I don't normally point this out because accidents happen to all of us but the staff ignored it and I had to ask for it to be taken care of. In general, our servers won't the most inviting and made me feel judged tbh. I tried the spaghetti and meatballs and my partner had the steak frites. This was truly a most unsatisfying meal. I came here tonight in the high hopes of trying the September collaboration with Mimi Cheng's, the matzo ball soup dumplings. I heard about it on Instagram and was eager to end my Rosh Hashanah with something uniquely Jewish. The Instagram post claims they are available at all locations of Jack's wife Freda starting 9/15. I asked the waiter about it and he had 0 idea what I was talking about. I figured maybe he was just not sure how the soup was served. I ordered the matzo ball soup in hopes it would have the dumplings. But what else to eat with it? At $17 a soup, I figured it must be a pretty massive bowl. Therefore I opted for a side of kale so I wouldn't ruin my appetite. The soup came out and first of all 0 dumplings, so the waiter was right but the Instagram post (the whole reason I came) was wrong. But more importantly this was the smallest soup I have ever seen at that price. I know how to make matzo ball soup and cannot even fathom how it costs that much. There is no meat floating in this, or noodles. Just a few sliced carrots and one matzo ball. The soup itself had absolutely 0 flavor. I continued to pour salt into my hands and then eventually into the soup but the flavor never changed. The texture of the matzo ball was perfect but that's not worth the steep cost. I can't deny the kale was delicious but if I knew how puny the soup was, I certainly would have ordered something else more substantial. Given the great taste of the kale I added 1 star to my review. While this was my first time here I'm sure I must have just picked wrong. With many locations of this restaurant, I'm sure there is more to it than meets the eye. But please take note and do not come here for the matzo ball dumplings because they do not have them AND do not order the matzo ball soup unless you want your Jewish ancestors to roll over in their graves. read more

3.5 stars I came to Jacks Wife Freda for brunch in a group of 4 at 11:30AM on a Sunday morning. We had a reservation which I definitely suggest since this place can get very packed on weekends. I have not been to the other locations but I thought this was a really cute casual spot that feels very lively. The tables are super close together so there is not that much room around you but it is manageable. Our server was very attentive and got our orders right after arriving. We ordered some drip coffee which was good and I believe had free refills. For food we got: Roasted cauliflower: did not take a picture of this but it was probably my favorite thing! It came with this creamy sauce, capers, and little pieces of raw cauliflower that gave it some extra texture. The cauliflower was roasted to perfection. Really enjoyed this! Halloumi: also very good! Came with grapes which gave a very nice sweet/savory contrast. Thin slices of halloumi. Good appetizer for sharing although the portion size is definitely small if you are a halloumi lover. Did not take pics. Green shakshuka: for how hyped up this is, I was truly pretty underwhelmed. I felt that the shakshuka lacked flavor and was a little bit too watery. The challah toast was pretty good but again I feel like a lot of the charm of the bread was lost with the shakshuka. Would probably order a different entree next time since I felt this one was lacking and did not feel rich enough for what I hope in shakshuka. Overall, I thought this place was a cute brunch spot. You definitely need a reservation since it gets pretty full and there are some good dishes. They have pretty healthy options on the menu and you leave feeling light and clean but also not hungry. I ordered a latte as well (need my coffee!) and they serve it with the cute designs with the frothed milk. As soon as I saw the Mediterranean breakfast I knew that's what I wanted to have. Sounded fresh and flavorful, and very in tune with the restaurant's food theme. I added the duck bacon on the side, and absolutely loved all of it. A great vibe all around but could definitely be overwhelming in the cramped space when it's more crowded. Maya 's Grain Bowl: 9/10 I love a warm grain bowl and everything in this bowl tastes great together! I loved the squash, roasted tomatoes, and the eggs made it very filling. The green sauce that came on the side was also delicious. House Salad: 8/10 This salad is a bit simple, and I would have appreciated the leaves and radishes being more bite sized. I personally don't love tarragon, but the tarragon dressing was well liked by my mom who does. It's a very light salad and a bit small, so I would recommend a protein. We got the chicken kebab with it. Chicken kebab: 8.5/10 The chicken was really well cooked and pretty nicely seasoned. It wasn't too dry. Great name. A while back, I had passed by the original SoHo location on Lafayette several times when I stayed down there, but I never made it in because it was always packed. Now it appears to have grown to six locations (with two in Japan), and Jamie W. and I happened to be strolling in the West Village when we came upon the Carmine Street location. It was definitely bustling with a convivial vibe but also more spacious with a table immediately available for us. Owner Dean Jankelowitz named his restaurant for his Jewish grandmother from South Africa, and it's her bouffant hairdo that's on the logo. His cooking influences come from there, Israel, and the Lower East Side. I also saw Peri-Peri Chicken and Vegetable Curry Bowl, so let's just call it global cuisine. First things first though, I ordered the $15 Pimm's Cup #1, quite refreshing with cucumber, lemonade, mint, and ginger added to the Pimm's (photo: https://bit.ly/3QhSizk). I had pretty high expectations for Jack's Wife Freda since every location is always packed during brunch hours but I admittedly was disappointed with my experience. I went to the West Village location with some friends around 12:30pm and we were able to be seated immediately with no wait, I'm guessing because it was past peak brunch time. We were seated in the long bench style table in the middle of the restaurant, which seat multiple parties. They also had booth style seating and smaller tables. First thing to note: this restaurant can get LOUD. I'm guessing due to the low ceiling and the packed tables, I was barely able to hear the person sitting across from me! Definitely not a good place to have any sort of long conversations with friends or family. Secondly, the aisles between tables are too narrow, almost in a claustrophobic sense. I was bumped on my head or shoulder at least 3 times during my meal. Twice from servers carrying plates or large crates of glasses, and once from another patron. I am not sure if the other locations are like this, but I will give a 1/5 stars for ambiance/environment. As for the food, I would say it was pretty unremarkable. We got for the table their signature Green Shashuka and a couple of shareable plates (Fried Zucchini Chips, Kefta Kebab and Peri Peri Chicken wings). Portions were on the smaller side, even for the entree dish. The Green Shashuka had 2 small eggs, very runny green sauce, and 2 thin slices of bread. It was pretty good but just way too small. Even if this was an entree for one person (not sharing) it would not be a substantial meal. 3/5 The Zucchini Chips and Peri Peri wings were my favorite! Definitely would recommend these if you go. The chips have good flavor, good crunch and the sauce went well with the dish as well. The wings were a tad too spicy for me, but the chicken was moist and flavorful. 4/5 for both. The Kefta Kebab was... interesting. It's like these persian style meatballs with a tahini dipping sauce and some flatbread. I was not a fan of the flavor profile of the meatballs because it was sweet in a weird way. I think they added too much cinnamon or something so it threw the flavors off. 2/5 Lastly, I think the beverages were overpriced for what they were. I got a plain non-alcoholic mint lemonade for $10. I wasn't expecting the best lemonade ever but it was really sour, had no real mint flavor and simply wasn't worth it. Would I try Jack's Wife Freda again? Maybe. I heard good things about their other brunch options like the Madame Freda, so I might give it another shot. But definitely would not return to the WV location. read more

I walked by Jack's Wife Freda multiple times in SOHO and really wanted to check it out. My friend whom I haven't seen in a while was down, so we met up at the West Village location. The restaurant is cramped with super tiny tables. It's loud and difficult to have any meaningful convo. Food does make up for it though! The Mediterranean Breakfast is super delicious. I liked eating the pita bread with labne (thick, yogurt-like, tart cream cheese) and sliced avo with salt. Chopped salad was light, refreshing, and acted as a palate cleanser. My friend and I both didn't like the cataloupe mimosa much. The puree just did not go well with the cava and it was extremely pulpy. read more
