The outside loudly says "run down diner, we don't care to keep the place up". Litter in the parking lot. Inside appeared clean, but just looks like a 60s diner that got stuck in time and was never updated. I received a friendly greeting from staff, but I'd had no sleep and was not able to respond. The waitress got my order wrong. I clearly said sausage patties, but links appeared instead. The wait was longer than what I was used to from other places who serve the same fare. They were NOT busy so really no excuse. The coffee didn't taste right. Perhaps it was the water used. Definitely overpriced for what you get. I will be going back to Carter Brothers. You get more food at a decent price, they always serve it promptly and they make sure you have a takeaway beverage. read more

Dive type diner , the food is ok the first time we went everything was good and the served wrapped real butter cubes which I like , this time I wanted to try the strawberry waffle , which was served with butter spread basically margarine , I don't eat that kind of thing . I asked our server if they had any real butter when she brought our food , she promptly said nope this is what we have, the kitchen uses the same thing . Then she checked with us and I said the last time I was here they had real butter , I would never have come back if not , she said probably we get it in every week . With a attitude then she said let me check with the kitchen to be sure ... why she didn't do that when I first place? And why the attitude .. she tried to be nice after that but .. we don't appreciate attitude from some one we are going to tip .. making the customer feel like you don't want to be bothered. To do you job ! If your not picky the food is ok , but you need consistency . She did bring some real butter from kitchen it wasn't the wrapped butter I got the first time .But they had butter but my food was cold at this rate and the strawberry had a small dollop of some sort of strawberry goop in the middle and no whipped cream had to ask for more . Was visiting Greensboro from Northern Virginia. We went over to Country Barbeque for Sunday breakfast and didn't realize they weren't open on Sunday, so someone local recommended that we go to Jakes. The food was delicious! Two of us had French toast with country ham/bacon, eggs (with cheese and onions added at my request) and potatoes. The French toast was the best I've ever had. Must say the country ham was a tad salty, but I guess I should've expected that. It was giant sized and served on a separate dinner plate! Bring your pills if you decide to get this. ;-) The other person in our group had corned beef hash with a side of potatoes, and scrambled eggs and said it was also very good. Great food at excellent prices and now that it's smoke free I love it ten times more. It use to be my only real complaint was the smoking but now I can eat in anytime and not be bothered with second hand. It may not be much to look at on the outside but the food is delicious and it's open 24 hours so late at night it pretty much beats anything in Greensboro. This is not a place for foodies but decent diner fare done reasonably well when I've been here. The daily special is a good choice and value. I will go back but not when my picky BFF is along. Absolutely amazing! We came here once a few years ago because we got snowed in and it's walking distance from the Hilton...and once again it did not disappoint! I had a double bacon cheeseburger with fries and my mom had the caesar salad with grilled chicken. Everything was fresh and absolutely outstanding. Wow, this place is really REALLY bad. This was our first time dining here. When I told the waitress, she responded that they are known for their breakfast. If they are known for breakfast, I hate to see what they are NOT known for. My son and I both got the breakfast specials, which came with the usual scrambled eggs, meat, grits and a waffle. I also got a side of biscuits and sausage gravy. What we received was some of the most disgusting breakfast food I have ever eaten. The eggs were rubbery, grits were bland and the waffle was STONE cold! The waitress walked over and flipped it on both sides and said yep, its cold. Ya think? Is it that difficult to get a hot waffle? To top it off, the biscuits and gravy tasted like straight flour. The waitress was super nice, so I will give one star for that, but I can see why I never stopped in to eat at this place. We went to Jake's-yesterday for breakfast. Our waitress slapped the menus on the tables. When my husband said we knew what we wanted, she said there were two other people ahead of us and stormed off. After she placed our order on the table, we never saw her again. She refused to look at us so I walked over to her and asked for our check. My husband asked if we had done something wrong and she began to shout that it wasn't even her morning to work. She had worked yesterday, and she wasn't supposed to work today. I would have spoken with the manager, but she was so loud and angry that I was afraid of what she would do next. She was a Caucasian middle aged lady with brown hair piled on her head. I usually think this is the best diner in the triad, but today's visit started to really make me think otherwise. I usually come through the drive through because its fast (generally speaking) for one person. I was greeted by a waitress who was really nasty in the speaker "Drive up to the first window" I drove to the first window (the real first window) and she was at the second window with her head sticking out the window. I had to back up my car physically because she refused to go to the other window. She was a woman with brown hair, who was rather old. So I order a provalone steak and cheese omlette with a side of sausage patties. She gives me my order. I get home and now my order already is missing the sausage, not to mention that the cheese was American. I usually don't make a fuss about these things, inside can be very busy. Prices are really fair, I would give it a chance and go inside... not outside... be very VERY clear about what you want ... send it back if its wrong....My guess is she was thoughtless and while the kitchen was making my sausage, saw a ready omlette and took her chances.... read more

The cooks didn't even seem like they liked there jobs I would not recommend anyone come to this place. This is my second time at Jake's Dinner. The first time was a drive through order. It took 20 - 39 minutes to get through drive through. Wanting to give it another chance, I visited tonight. At the drive thru, there is no menu but says to drive to the window to place order. But this time, you cannot back up or turn around because the driveway is a single lane with no exit possible with cars in front of and behind you. I placed my order. The cashier took my money, gave me my drive, and told me to drive around and go back through drive thru to pick up the order. O drove around and got back to the window, but the order still was not ready. At this point it was 45 minutes since I placed the original order. The cashier asked me to park, and she would bring out my order in five minutes. After a full hour, I got back in the line . When I got to the window to request a refund, the cashier advised that they do not give refunds but could give me a gift card. I advised that I would jot be back ever. She said that the only option was to come back in the morning to talk with the manager to see what they can do. Unwilling to come back, I told her to just go ahead and give me the order. She looked for the order and said that she couldn't find the order because she thought I had left. No refund or food and unwilling to return, I asked how long would it be if they made another order. She said that she could get it to me in 5 or 10 minutes and would cook it herself. Incredulous, I parked in the curbside pick up and wait. As I end this long (unedited, unproofread review, my order is finally here, almost 1 hour and 45 minutes later for an $18 Philly cheesesteak combo and Bacon, egg, cheese sandwich. My suggestion--go to the Waffle House which is right behind Jake's Dinner!!! And the food is cold!!!! The cashier was very nice, bit this place is wholly under-staffed!!!! Probably one of the biggest disappointments of me experiencing all those place in Greensboro people seem to like so well. Today I placed a to go order for a sub with steak & cheese only with light mayo. Once I got back to work I realized that they put everything on the sub ( onions, mushrooms & pepper) I can not eat onion or mushrooms & it was so much its impossible to scape off. I called them & the girl who took my order says oh when you said that I thought you meant light mayo only so she admitted she made a mistake. She then gets her boss, who tells me they can make me another however I did not have time to go back. She says ok well just make sure to bring me the food back whenever you can & we will make you another one. She was trying to insinuate that I was lying for free food which as I said the girl already admitted she made the mistake in ordering. So she thinks I should keep an old sandwich with me all day or until the next day just to bring it back to her. Never in my life! So rude, definitely wont be back.
